Nearly fifty years after these shows were broadcast, I still heard somebody say in a pub 'I fink I got it wrong again, dad!' and people understood the reference. That's the sign of a good comedy!

I never heard that Dick Emery was "much maligned"- he was extremely popular here in Australia. I have his DVDs and get a great giggle from them, 30 years later.
Yes, this is the first time I've heard that, too, as I and a friend of mine here in Canada really enjoyed him. But perhaps a negative response was something only occurring within the UK that no one outside ever heard about.
Dick Emery worked as a driving instructor for BSM before becoming famous as a comedian. A few years later, in the early '70s, I worked as an instructor too at the same branch and one of my pupils was Royce Mills who plays the first pupil in the sketch!
One of the highlights of our Saturday night. Brought the whole family together for a good belly laugh! Cheap reality shows dominate today with 'celebs' taking themselves far too seriously. Give me Dick Emery, Benny Hill, Dad's Army, etc, etc any day!

I witnessed this being filmed and saw Dick Emery or Roy Kenear, I was a child with my class mates going for our weekly swimming lessons. The location for this was Staines swimming baths, Surrey (You can just see a glimpse of the Councils badge on the building). I recall seeing a coach similar to the one that had brought us to the pool that was full from one end to the other of costumes, it was a mobile wardrobe. I have not seen this sketch since it was first broadcast in the 1970's.

You've obviously never experienced Paul Foot the weird c**t with a mullet about a decade ago. Regular on Never Mind The Buzzcocks. He defines the epitome of unfunny....
I think he was brilliant and very much under-rated. Nice humorous twists here, like the nervous man at the beginning turning out to be the driving examiner, and the woman thinking her feminine charms can get her through the test, only to find the examiner is a homosexual. He played some wonderful characters and a great variety. Shame we don't see Lampwick here though!
The actor sitting beside Dick Emery on the outdoor seat at the start of the sketch was on a UK public information film about driving in rain, a 1980's ad for a popular drinks mixer as a golfer, and presented an experimental variety show in 1982 on Channel 4 called 'The Cut Price comedy show'. Anyone know who he is?
Thanks for the memories, I think that he was one of the better female impersonators and he had so many catch phrases. I did once meet him when I was taken back stage to meet him, I was 15, and he was kind enough to give me his autograph which I still have.
It’s odd that Emery has largely been forgotten today, he was a great exponent of this form of entertainment, not always hilarious as demonstrated here, but usually inventive and his stereotypes were watchable.
I don't think comedy like this would offend many people at all, the characters aren't having a go at gays or women etc, they are fun characters played with affection.
Just think if this was broadcast today not only would it be taken off air but the makers would probably end up in court for all sorts of discrimination charges unless it was on the BBC of course well have to go now to catch another episode of benny hill ?
Its over 30 years since he died its about time the bbc devoted a night of TV his honour like the rest of the comedy greats. The other year the ITV did an episode of the Unforgettable series on him 20 minutes odd of tv doesn't really do him justice which is a pity as he came across as a very interesting person.
I don’t see Dick Emery as being homophobic or sexist. From what I’ve read he was a sharp observer of character and used it to great comedic effect as evidenced here. I think if the Daily Mail/Daily Express is constantly telling you that “others” are offended by this kind of comedy then eventually you’re going to believe it. A very popular resident at the time. Classic TV memories!
It's years since I've seen Dick Emery. My old man used to have a Ford Anglia. Thanx for posting.
God I miss the likes of Dick emery, I wasn't very old when he was on, remember watching my grandad laughing at this
Glad UA-cam show all these great classics, it shows how we used to get real funny programs and not the crap presently being presented in this PC world.
Brilliant old school comedy
typical of the wall to wall talent on British TV 40 years ago.... long gone. David Walliams new show...yeah right!
Comedy genius…using many of his most popular characters in one sketch 🙌🏻🤣🤣🤣🇬🇧🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A wonderful comedian and a staple of BBC Saturday night entertainment during the golden years of the 60's and 70's.
I dont know if the pretty lady with 2 points, would definitely pass into days world.
He was indeed a comedy genius. Many thanks for sharing.
The tall girl (she's 6ft 2in mostly legs) is the wonderful Moira Foot! Moira was in a few episodes of Are You Being Served. There are clips of these on You Tube.
Ampex196 Do you mean she is 6ft2 in with heels, surely she isn't 6ft2 without shoes?
. I am 5ft9 and 3/4 inches tall barefoot, high hipped and my legs are the same length as moira's were, in 3 inch heels I am almost 6ft0 in depending if they are a platform shoe
My mother is 5ft9 barefoot and she has very long legs also.
Moira next to Gordon Kaye in Allo Allo looked around 5ft11 to me in low heeled shoes never over 6ft
Gordon was 5ft10 .
@@suzannemoogan9675 Who am I to argue? I'm 5ft 9 and she stands a lot taller than me. Nevertheless, I have known women who miraculously shrink when they take their shoes off!
@@suzannemoogan9675 Did you know them Suzanne? You could be right. I only met Moira once and didn't take much notice of her footware (no pun intended).
Fantastic this is ! Yeah ! The good old days ! And what a great actor he was !
I agree with William 636 All these Channels Now But We Had The Best of it, 1960's 70's all Through 80, 90, What I Call The (GOOD OLD DAYS) 👍
Dick was a mega star who brightened up my life on telly once a week in the 1970s.Sadly missed and hilarious.Always will be hence a master
I've seen this sketch on the BBC program "My favorite joke". I had never heard of Dick Emery before. I'm glad I know about it now, I love English comedy and I'm always on the look-out for more shows and sketches =D
still brilliant after all these years
The man who is 'in charge of the test centre' isn't it 'the minister of the inferior' in Clockwork Orange?
paraply01 and from the first episode of The Young Ones
Oh yes. I must watch first episode of Young Ones again.
Nick Priest, yeah i thought it was him, as soon as i saw his face and hear him speaking i thought of that bit
"go see Rol for a chat up the poli"
"But that doesnt mean i want you to seduce my parrot"
Young Ones is my favourite sitcom
The actor you're referring to is Anthony Sharp.
Pops up in To The Manor Born as well
At the time mum and dad used to watch this and roll around laughing, I wondered why , now I know, classic and has not dated.
It was all so simple back then - we could say what we liked about each other, have a wicked laugh and get it all off our chest! Now you walk a minefield just saying hallo. The young have no idea what pathological tension the world of PC has created. People joke about PC but it's a kind of social evil really. It's poisoned us all. RIP dear old Dick. 😢
That brought a lot of fond memories back. Great comedy actor, much better than Benny Hill.
Benny was awesome as well
I love all this type of smutty humour, grew up with in the 70's and still find it funny and really couldn't give a toss who's offended by it.
There's plenty of rubbish I don't like or find in the least bit funny so I don't watch it. You have a choice, it's that simple.
But compared to what's going down these days tho.,It wasn't smutty humour was it.It's just the new mob coming in & saying right thats no good, gotta go but this new stuff is great!
pro trick : watch movies on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching loads of movies these days.
@Alfonso Archer definitely, I have been watching on flixzone} for years myself =)
