    Petco being concerned about dog food being vegan is wild for me. The more they should be concerned about is these "grain-free" products, which is an overwhelming section of their dog food section and already has a connection with dilated cardiomyopathy due to taurine deficiencies, the overwhelming amount of legumes, and the lack of several essential vitamins or poor absorption. Besides that, I'm dying to try clean meat. I've been wanting to try it since it was announced in the mid-2010s.

    • @vinregret

      If the legumes in grain free food are causing the dcm, wouldn’t the plant based dog food have the same issue? From what I’ve seen the protein is entirely from legumes

    the hospital food thing stands out as really great to me, and it makes sense that it worked out well in New York (as opposed to somewhere like where I live) because I guess a higher percentage of those patients wouldn't eat a lot of meat anyway due to religious reasons. easier to give out tasty veggie meals that suit a number of different kinds of dietary restrictions than to bring the patients bacon and eggs then have to return to the kitchen to whip up something else. and that would prompt them to come up with more vegan options that are more nutritionally balanced. then the patients who normally eat meat probably figure it's hospital food so it's going to taste funny anyway.
    one time I got locked up in the looney bin against my will in Madison TN, and despite that place being one of the worsts, the kitchen did really try to accommodate me. they were great. not that the food was incredible, but they made sure I didn't go hungry, though I sure was on arrival. they gave me 2 loaded pb&j sandwiches and huge iceberg salad with 2 tomato and 2 cucumber slices. breakfast was toast, fried potatoes, and chili beans, then one time for lunch they gave me a veggie burger and a heaping plate of spaghetti with marinara and carrots on the side.

    I have to admit, in switzerland, I'm so lucky when it comes to chocolate, so much choice and it's really easy to just buy fairtrade. But it's still a choice that has to be made at some point. So, if you think fairtrade is important, I want to encourage you to make more deliberate choices for it (of cousre not only fairtrade, fairafric or gepa are also good or maybe even better labels imo) and if you don't think that it's important, I'm interested why.

    Still hold the most hope for lab grown meats. Never tried it but am anxious to see what it tastes like and what it costs. Tried a bunch of egg/milk substitutes this year and that was a dreadful experience. Nothing came even remotely close for a breakfast alternative. Sticking to eggs and Fairlife (half sugar, 50% more protein) for the time being. I'm pessimistic about good alternatives for them but you never know. Technology marches on.

Look at the ethics of Fairlife; an undercover dairy investigation into one of thir farms found employees slapping, kicking, punching, pushing, throwing and slamming calves; calves were stabbed and beaten with steel rebars, hit in the mouth and face with hard plastic milking bottles, kneed in the spine, burned in the face with hot branding irons resulting in extreme pain and suffering by the calves, and in some cases permanent injury and even death. Male calves are transported to veal farms, despite the corporation's claims that it does not.

    Sadly I stopped being vegan in 2023. It was super stressful, emotional and extremely difficult for me to do that, since I went vegan after watching Earthlings and stayed vegan for 7 years. I was diagnosed with crohn‘s disease and struggled for 11 months before making the switch after talking to a dietitian and realizing how it was actually impossible for quiet a few people. I was vegan for the animals. 100% but I couldn’t eat beans, lentils (legumes in general and high fiber in general) and had severe cramps, diarrhea, weightloss and felt so weak, I couldn’t walk up the stairs at one point.. it was horrible. Thus I wondered, how fair it is to have such a moralistic attitude about the consumption of animals, since more and more people are developing issues longterm. I also had neurological symptoms that I never connected to my lifestyle, that completely went away after incorporating dairy, eggs, fish, meat.. just eating a mixed diet fixed issues I have had for a long time and it blows my mind. And yes, I supplemented B12, D and Omega 3. And ate a normal vegan diet with fats, protein and carbs. I‘m just leaving this here in case someone is struggling. I care about animals but my health comes first and I feel like there is a lot that the vegan community needs to consider. It’s still weird since it was such a huge part of my life from my childhood into my twenties… but I am still interested in the development and news within the vegan movement and your channel is very inviting for people and their struggles, thus I am grateful ❤ I believe in a perfect world we would all be vegan, but sadly that is not the reality (yet). One day 🙏🏽

Or if you do indeed eat more meat, it will just make you have poor(er) health. And no I am not and will not ever be vegan. But over doing it is not wise either.

    I consider myself as committed to a vegan diet as you. However, while I support the idea of informing my fellow man and woman that a plant-filled diet would do them, and the world a lot of good, I refuse to adopt the pomposity of shoving said lifestyle down the maws of other animals. It doesn't matter if a canine COULD lead a vegan lifestyle; for the most part a dog is a carnivore. And what about cats... they definitely need to eat other animals. Or do you believe that it would be a betrayal of PC politics if a vegan or vegetarian adopted a feline?

    • @jonahwhale9047
      @jonahwhale9047 4 місяці тому +2

      I don't consider a very committed vegan. It reads like you're still carrying a load of carnist programming to work out. Become more informed. Cats aren't obligate carnivores, they are obligate taurine-ivores, & the irony is, most commercial cat foods, which many only actually have a few % of meat in them, are supplemented with the same tauring used in vegan mixes. Dogs, on the other hand, developed the gene to produce amylase which is used to break down starches & plant foods 10,000s of years ago, as we co-evolved together.
      There is real science being done about, loads of case studies including one of the longest lived dogs on the planet, Bramble, a 25 years old - that's double the average life expectancy - border collie. Dogs have omnivores for as long as they walked with us.
      Basically, as far as cats & dogs go, we are the same stage human vegans were at in the 1950s and 60s, with all sorts of uninformed naysayers predicting sudden death & arguing the case for magical ingredients that only existing in meat (yes, that really happened).
      Ethics aside, e.g. an average dog eats as much as 90kg of meat a year therefore causing as many animal deaths as an additional non-vegan human in your household, the other big argument is, of course, the environmental footprint of them doing so. Cats we should basically just remove from our societies. They're pretty much the most genocidal species after our own causing numerous species extinctions, so the vegan debate there should be what to feed them, but how to remove them.

    • @jeffreyslotnikoff4003
      @jeffreyslotnikoff4003 4 місяці тому

      I have nothing to work out. I began my vegetarian diet over 30 years ago. I became a vegan over 5 years ago. Whether or not dogs could adopt a plant-based diet is irrelevant; they are another species and human beings have no moral right to inflict their political ideologies on them or cats or whales or dolphins or on any other species. And who the hell are you to try to remove domesticated cats from being considered as animal companions. I had a cat for over 18 years (and I didn't get her as a kitten) and I will never forget her. Come down off your high friggin' horse.@@jonahwhale9047

      Public health in every single country, including the ones where the government pay for healthcare and are financially motivated to keep people healthy, recommend eating more fruit and veg.
      All medical science, dietetics, all very clear. There is no "big vegetable" industry spreading misinfo. You don't have to be vegan, but eat plants, your body needs them. There might be some you personally can't eat, so reintroduce them one at a time to figure out your sensititivies.
      You don't have to give up meat, I don't care, giving up veg will cut years off your life, my agenda is that.
