- In this episode, disappointment. We sort out the long crank issue, suspension, resemble the front end, remove the tint and go for a first ride down the Autobahn. How did that go? Well, only one way to find out.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how he toke the time to talk to the bicycle guy? He appeared at the worst possible moment and he had the streangth and patience to speak to him.
I’m sure if there is a guy who can find and fix that engine it’s you.
Very nice comment.
Yes, the guy on the bicycle has now watched the video and knows why Sreten did not look too happy. :(
Poor guy came at the worst possible time lol.
@@seanpetersen5553 and on an effing bicycle of all things, disgrace.... :)
He bought a junk to begin with and that guy is a subscriber, so you better talk to him😁Thanks to guys like him/me he'll be able to fix the Alpina. It's an old performance BMW and they're all famous for the rod bearing issue, even the new once I hear.It is a mysterious engine and that's why is such love and hate issue dealing with it 🙃
Take some comfort in the fact that at the exact moment you confirmed a noise. That a genuine subscriber had spotted the car, probably chased to catch up and wanted to give his heartfelt thanks for the content you produce. It won’t change the outcome, whatever that will be, but it’s a sign of how much we all enjoy your efforts and great things are sure to come with your channel. Humility and Passion 👌🏻
That was a really nice encounter with respect shown by both sides.
Well written!
He must of been a BMW driver as well, that’s why he was on his bike lol
Well said!
Spoken like a true gentleman.
I feel so connected to this channel that when I saw the failure it was literally the same feeling as if my car broke :(
Yeah, I was also pretty disappointed, was looking forward to a successful conclusion of this project. Just a shame, since I can imagine the amount of money this project took.
That is exactly how I felt. That horrible gut feeling you get when a bmw makes any noise it shouldn’t.
Same feeling here.. For a brief moment i really felt like my e39 was knocking like that, hope the damage is not too big.
As usual love your channel, gutted the engine has started to knock, hope its any easy and not and overly expensive fix.
Wow, that cyclist had some bad timing, I don't know if I could have even spoken to him in that situation. I saw some comments about Sreten not being nice enough, but we need to look at the situation which is just horrible and Sreten still found some time to talk to him. What a fantastic guy! Hope that he resolves the knocking issue after all those hours spent on this machine.
Sreten: "Man, I am really enjoying this car. I think I might actually keep it!"
Alpina: "you sure about that?"
I don't want to be that guy, but I knew this project and this type of engine would be trouble, these are KNOWN to be INCREDIBLY unreliable engines, I worked at a BMW dealership when we had those engines and they were a complete nightmare, doesn't matter if it's alpina badge or not either. But I am kinda shocked that it lasted this short of a while
At least he fixed the check engine light!
@@henrik1743 Almost everything about a BMW is classy -- except the reliability. Survey after survey shows that BMWs are the most expensive brand of car to maintain. But that knocking sure sucks!
Don’t feel bad Sreten - cars break, and at least we get a lot more episodes of project Chicago coming our way :)
Thank you! I'm not super upset or bummed out, shit happens and it's all fixable in the end. Cheers :)

I have done a few YT videos of repairs and man I have to give you props sir. I can totally appreciate the work required to just move the camera around let alone do the repairs....especially under the car work - even on a lift. Funny too, the first stop I made when I bought my 2007 300C was to get the windows tinted and I live in Michigan where it is "somewhat" illegal...at least the shade I had installed on the front side windows anyway....but I love the look. I have been pulled over a few times, but they just warned me and I was on my way. Definitely a personal preference.
I was writing my comments as I watched the video and man brother...I felt your pain when you heard that knock. By some of the thumbnails I saw the repairs look pretty extensive too. What a fricking bummer. As you know....sh*t happens. Not very comforting I know. Hopefully it's not too expensive to repair but I am guessing it was a lot of work. Crap !!!
As a BMW owner living in the US of A - I personally love seeing the "home land" of Germany. Beautiful country land for those beautiful restored BMW's to cruise through.
That is great but may I respectfully point out that you are slightly missing the point.

Alpina Sponsor our man here !!
That's some awful luck, it was running so good! Can't wait to see the teardown and failure analysis. Hopefully it's something simple like a chain guide.
That most definitely sounds like chain noise to me. Rod bearing would have been far more noticeable early on in the test drive. As the car was in higher RPM, building more oil pressure, noise would go away, and then you would hear it at idle speeds (quietly at first, but the longer it runs louder it gets, as the metal gets eaten away.) I think it's damn near impossible that this engine spun a bearing given the meticulous care that was taken ensuring correct tolerances when it was assembled. The only plausible reason for a bearing issue would have been a clogged oil galley on first startup.
@@gdowdy excellent thinking! I was thinking it, yet you said it!
I would like to add to your statement: I’m thinking (anxiously) that one or more of the sleeves is loose/damaged/non-cylindrical hence making the problem related to the sleeving job done on the main block. What’s your opinion on that?
For me it doesn’t sound like a rodknock, it misses the typical high pitch pinging, it sounds more like a tipping piston. Btw: poor viewer that spotted you, he was soo happy to meet you, and he got you in such a bad situation
So true, he sounded so excited 😆
Nah homie that sounds like rod knock to me . Tell tale sign is the sound goes according to engine rpm/load . Could maybe be valve train but I think it would be a lot noisier .
@@Richoffloudpack agree, it 100% sounds like a spun rod bearring.
I agree, typically rod knock is more of a slapping/clacking sound, while this sounds like something rubbing along something else while rotating but I could be wrong.
@@Richoffloudpack I mean anything that spins with the engine would be associated with RPM, could even be an external balancer rubbing against a plastic shroud, or a loose belt rubbing. These are all things I've heard before that sound awful because it's associated with RPM, but have turned out to be minor faults. In this case, I don't think it's rod knock because a spun bearing or knock is a loud clacking or slapping sound, while this is more of a light scraping sound. If it is rod knock, then he caught it right as the bearing spun and it hasn't had time to do any real damage.
Pro-Tip: “Reinstall” the wood screw in the oil pan and that sound will go away…
It was a nail
Yes, this is might be the problem. Sreten did not put that screw in oil pan.
😂 😂 😂 😂
Mechanic rule #1: always put back the bolts and nails in their original place!
I think this comment "nails" it. Sorry. Couldn't resist the pun.
Sreten, I am terribly sorry for what hapened and hope it is easily fixable, because you went above and beyond with that engine build...It hapened to me in July 1999 when after a long month of rebuilding a Renault engine (sleeving the block, refinishing the valves and the cranckshaft, changing the cylinders' rings, etc..), a nasty noise (tak tak tak tak...) gutted me right after the start because the engine was not well lubricated (the oil pan bottom was not straight and too close to the oil pump which led to an oil starvation: the pump had trouble sucking the oil and sending it to the top of the negine) which led afterwars to a bad compression and difficult cold starts...I ended up selling that car for a major loss....we learn from our mistakes...! Can't wait for the next episode! We are with you with our hearts!
What an absolute gentle man in how he spoke to that fan during that moment. Shows a truly decent and nice guy. Fingers crossed the engine isn't dead. Been watching for over a year now and thoroughly enjoy every video. Chin up fella. Simon from UK

You may be on to something. Sreten did say he had no air conditioning, right?
@@marknelson8724 That was because he had no AC juice since he tore apart the whole car
If he had no Freon in the system, likely the compressor would not even engage because of a safety switch. It could still be a faulty compressor, though. Here's hoping he finds out what it is!

OMG, I feel your pain. In college, I helped a friend rebuild the engine in his 1970 Buick GS. We pulled the engine and took it to a machine shop. My friend wanted to reassembly the engine himself. I tried to talk him into letting the machine shop do it but he insisted. We put the engine together. About a 500 miles later, he got on it and we heard the dreaded knock. Our hearts sank 'cause we both put a lot of blood, sweat, and curse-words into getting that massive 455 back in-place. That was way back circa 1980; hearing your knock was like reopening an old wound. I pray it's something minor...but I fear it's not.
Thanks for the honesty. That´s why, this is the best car revival channel out there!
That’s heartbreaking, feeling so sorry for you Sreten. Special after all that time and effort you have put into this engine.

I really like the stuff you do!
Absolutely beat series I've ever watched.. you're making me love BMW all over again. Thank you Sreten
Don't give up. I totally understand the frustration but do not jump to conclusions, you did a very good job. Rebuilding engines is a major job peppered with potential problems encountered. Start by examining the oil, if there are no shavings, I highly doubt it would be a spun bearing. Well, you know what to do next I am sure. ;-)
When I rebuilt my N54 "and i have noted this on a few S65 too" every stock rod bolt had a different Torque removal ranging from 12 to 70 ft lbs and the factory stretch was very different from bolt to bolt, the stock TTY rod cap bolts suck. Also the aluminum oil pump bolts where weak, stretching under load and heat letting oil to leak from the block mating surface to pump back in to the pan (oil starvation). The milled matting surface was also very bad from pump to block these things combined are prob why a lot of BMWs have bearing and cam ledge issues. I replaced all the aluminum bolts with stainless steel rods and bolts never had one problem since.
I think that this video will be a kind of milestone. A turning moment of your channel. After this video your channel will be bigger and more popular!! It looks like an action movie! Keep up your great work!

If it idles at the typical 750 RPM then things that happen at crank speed should be at 12.5 Hz. Things related to the valvetrain or a particular stroke should be 6.25Hz. This noise is about 4Hz which is quite slow but could correlate well with a chain. belt or something else that goes around far below crank speed-- of course, assuming 750 RPM.
What’s the formula to get to 12.5Hz based on 750rpm?
@@lenn4rd 750 (cycles/min) / 60 (sec/min) = 12.5 (cycles/sec)
Since the problem turned out to be pistons gouging the bores from incorrect tolerances, it's weird that the frequency was so low. I matched as best I could to a tone generator. It would indicate 480 RPM with something running at valvetrain speed. I doubt the engine idled at 240 RPM. 12.5 and 6.25 Hz were much too fast to match the video anyway.
