Matt, I’ve been golfing for 2.5 yrs now and have watched your videos from the very beginning. Broke 100 within my first 6 months without a driver, hitting a spinny 180yd 5W off the tee and trusting the way of the player, bump and running as much as possible. I now play to a 16hcp, building on the same bump/run fundamentals I had as 30+ hcp. I’m not a long hitter either, ~145yds with a 7i. I’ve only recently started to better understand the lie of the ball. When I analyze my rounds, I realize how many shots I drop through poor course management and not because of swing mechanics. I hardly hit the range and yet find myself improving just from applying everything you talk about. guys, this stuff really works. TRUST THE PROCESS
the most important part of that whole comment playa is that you think about your rounds. fairways, greens, OB, pentlies, 3 putts, double chips, gaffed 100 yard shots are all good things to look at in general but the main question is always WHY did that happen? can you pick up any patterns in your behavior/technique flaw/thinking/strategy? then HOW to fix it this is the only way to get better. dingleberries call it 'making excuses' but the excuses is the first place to start. then the reason why, then the fix. Last Saturday I got my first hole-in-one after 54 years of golf and shot a 78 after about 5 rounds this summer. I found myself recalling your wisdom and tips from your vids throughout my round. Thanks for your vids they are so helpful.
Matt, I just want you to know, I broke 85 for the first time the other day. Shot an 83. Your videos have taught me how to play smart golf, and that's what I did to break 85. Rather than driver every time, I hit 3 iron or 3 wood, I even hit my best tee shot with a 5 iron. Patience, course management, and a chill attitude is what I have learned from you, and I am forever grateful for that. The way of the playa works. Cheers
Got back into golf last summer. Discovered your videos around the same time. Broke 90 for the first time two weeks ago. Shot an 84, was +3 thru 10 holes. The confidential tips, and understanding on how to play the course is better than any swing tips.
The thing that’s helped me most is my mental game, if I do hit it in the rough from the tee don’t panic. I carded a double bogie or worse free round for the first time last week. I hit plenty of bad shots but didn’t panic or get frustrated and a lot of up and downs. Love your videos
Marty Boom boom is the greatest UA-cam golfer in the game. I broke 80 for the first time last week and chipped in TWO birdies using toe down chipping. I’d never done that before and my game has steadily improved since becoming learned in the confidential way of the playa
8:52 That's a good point. DO NOT fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others. At the end of the round, nobody knows let alone cares what club you hit from what distance, they care about the score. Play YOUR GAME!
So I just started to golf seriously this year, having played only a handful of times before. I find that instead of teaching someone how to hit the ball, you teach how to play. I found myself really seeing the game from a different perspective, and I ended up playing with a far better mentality. A shot that was off wasn't a bad shot, it was a shot that just ended up changing what my next shot would be, and that was a ton of stress that I was able to let go of. After watching a bunch of your videos, I was able to turn what would've been a frustration filled outing into a fun round, so I just wanted to say thanks!
Good video. I may not be a scratch golfer, but I can learn from this. Managing the misses so that I can give myself the better chance to get up and down. My putting is quite good in that I do not 3 putt often. And I have improved my off the tee shots which has brought my scores down to low 80s more often than not. I am just looking on getting things right to get me down to single diget handicap.
Matt! Love your stuff man, I’m 22 and have been seriously golfing for a little over a year now. I’ve fallen in love with the game, and since taking up your advice, I finally broke 90 yesterday. I shot a career 88. Thank you, keep doing what you do.
Nothing worse than hitting a beautiful shot a couple feet from the pin and the person driving your cart taking a wrong turn causing a flip that results in an ended round and a concussion 😵💫 But at least I went out on a great shot like a playa. Good news is that my new Takomo's should be getting here in the next couple weeks. Great video by the way Matt 🫡
I’ve practicing that toe down chipping and it is so much easier than just using the chipper on ever shot. I believe the toe down chipping will help my game a lot!
Impressed seeing how much your game has improved as ive watched your videos. Your consistency and touch has improved dramatically. Your videos have inspired me to do the same. Im hitting the range at least 3 days a week and practicing chipping and putting and getting a round or 2 in per week. When on the course i do my best chief playa accent and talk out my decision and what im going to do. Greetings from Florida playa
Very rare out here. I had two excellent ones at Pebble. They knew their stuff and saved me 8-9 strokes. 1 in 500 odds out here in Thailand though. Most caddie for people hitting the ball 170 off the tee, while also hitting their putts too hard. So under reading break is common because their usual clients SMASH the ball. Generally you need to add 50-100% more break if your speed is to die the ball into the hole. Any landing areas 110 yards up the fairway compared to the usual clients have never been seen and I will be told that they have never seen a golfer like me before. So I am usually go in blind and figure it out myself. When you get told there is space to the right, that is for the 180 yard drive. But OB for the 290 yard drive. A lot of caddies here affect a mid to high handicap golfer when they hit good shots but the caddie expects everything inside 10 feet on the green from your approach, for some reason. Overall, they are good company for a laugh but serious help on the course? Very very rare. But I like to make them feel like they are helping, for the vibe
Struggling to break 80 and had a round yesterday where I was +5 through 14 holes. Pushed my ball right off the tee on 15 but I got greedy and felt like I could still attack the pin from the rough… on the 1 handicap hole. Ended up pulling left into a hazard, and after a drop and a couple bad chips I ended the hole with a triple. Whole round blew up from there. I forgot the way of the playa for one moment of weakness and it cost me the goal. Just coming here to confess and commit to be better next time.
A confidential round. I average 175 yard drive on a coastal course with 13.5 index. Long par fours are three shot holes and therefore effectively par fives. Typically shoot a score around 90. Get more value for my golf round dollar than a longer hitter playing off a single digit handicap index.
Fairways and short game boyfriends! Eventually you make some putts or even some chip ins. I’ll have rounds where I shoot par or slightly better with a mix of bogeys and birdies and others just a lot of pars. Short game ALWAYS factors heavily regardless. Thanks for the solid content as always Matty my boy!! 💪🏼
I’m going off memory here. But I believe the pro’s proximity to the hole from the rough compared to the fairway is quite eye popping. For example, let’s say pros, on average, hit it to 15 feet from the hole from 150 yards from the FAIRWAY. On average the pros have to go all the way to 100 yards from the ROUGH to average 15 feet to the hole! My numbers aren’t perfect but it is something dramatic as I described. So Matt’s assertion about shots from the rough has been studied and, for me, the numbers made me go WOW!
Hey mate, thanks for the content! Can you please do a video on your mini driver? What brand is it? Loft? Benefits? Do you also carry normal driver or just mini?
The putts break toward that part of the hole. it's a good starting point to check which way your putt breaks. If its behind the hole, you are in for a fast putt. if its in the front of the up, its a slow putt slope is the 2nd aspect sometimes slope and grain (which causes the burn mark) can counter act each other and the grain could make a burn mark on the right edge, but the slope could be right to left. the putt could be straight!
5:43 Sir, are you planning to one day make a “spinny shot” one day? I have learned so much from you, and I attribute my last time playing and hitting 67% GIR all to your videos. Thank you so much for what you put into it.
@golfsidekick what I notice when playing with a scratch golfer compared to my 8 handicap is how many strokes I waste inside 100 yards. When putting for par from 8-10 feet or when you need to get up and down that is where they are way better on most days. Of course they are more consistent and their bad tee shots are closer together then my bad tee shot but for the most part it’s 100 yards and in
Yes sir. As i say short game is of extreme importance ESPECIALLY for scratch golfers. Scratch golfers will be 40-50% from eight feet add 25-30% from 10 feet. Thats a big difference for sure compared to even a 8 handicap
@@GolfSidekick The last piece of the puzzle for more consistency for this 8 handicapper is how to play holes that don’t fit your eye and perhaps a little intimidating. Less than a week later and I come down with a case of the hosel rockets.
When I started tracking greens in reg and # of putts per round, it really helped me. I could track where I was losing strokes.
