I've been consistently shooting in the low 90s for the past few weeks, but I've been on a mission to break 90 for the first time. Today, I applied the lessons from this video on the course and managed to score an 85. While I've always aspired to break 90, your approach of breaking it down hole by hole truly transformed my game. It made me rethink my shot selection, leading to more strategic decisions on when to go for the green in two. The result? Fewer misses and better outcomes on every hole, simply by adjusting my expectations. I even carded a few well-earned pars and sunk a birdie from 15 yards out on one hole. This video is hands down one of the best I've come across, and I've already shared it with others. Thanks for the game-changing insights!

Ok man, I went out this week and shot 82. Played the smart game. Played for Bogies on some par 3's that in the past I've lost more balls in the water than hitting the greens. Worked to get the ball to the 100 yard mark and attack the green on 4's and 5's. I'm becoming a playa, not a hacka! Thanks for your video's. I’m 50 and just started playing. I’ve so far gone from 113 to 94. My goal is to get into the 80’s by years end. The game becomes far more strategic when you begin playing the yardages v. Trying to get to greens hacking the snot out of it. I’m playing a round this Friday and hope to see a consistent low 90’s or even better break 90’s.

Wow, without seeing your video I did most of this and between June and August I went from 20.8 to 15.9. All this tips are 100% achievable. The extra thing I do is just try to score 15 for each 3 holes. I found that if you only play 3 holes at a time, you put the bad holes out of your mind and concentrate on your next 3. Great video that everyone could benefit from. Thank you.

When I first saw your videos I was a 20+ handicapper. I applied the "way of the playa'" and man; started seeing results. I struggle getting it up (the ball lol) so my flight is very peircing. Followed your advice of knowing my game and just playing it; fuck the haters. Got all the way down to a 13 handicap. After a few years there of constant scoring 82-88 avg...fell back into the peer presure and started going for long distances for no reason; layups went from an easy 9 iron to trying to hit longest clubbs in order to try and reach the green (which worked once in every 20 attempts). After watching this video two weeks ago, went back to my old playa' ways. Results? past 4 rounds have all been great in my book (84 and three 85s). So I had to circle back here and just drop this comment in appreciation of the way of the playa' .Cheers brotha

My handicap is 21 (USGA handicap Index 18.5), it has taken me 18 months to get from 28 to 21. I have been working consistency in my iron swings as well - BUT, I watched this video and tried it. I didn't always use the part about aiming for the back of the green if I knew that my club distance was good enough to get it in the middle of the green.
The result, 1st round after watching this video was shooting an 86 - best game of my life - and that included a penalty for a lost ball. Unbelievable! thank you thank you thank you!!!

Great advice. I like that you really did try to play like a 15 handicapper. I have seen other videos from teaching pros who attempt to do the same thing. They hit a 7 iron off the tee to approximate the distance a 15 hcp would get. Then they hit another 7 iron 180 yards onto the green and 2 putt for par. A real 15 hcp will hit maybe a 5 hybrid on the second shot and leave it short and to the left of the green. For years I have viewed bogie as a good outcome and sometimes it is the only outcome possible. And as you have said, this sets me up for a lot of par possibilities. The short game is everything - chipping, putting and bunker shots. I am an older 13 hcp who has lost several yards of distance on all of my clubs. I therefore have moved up 1 and sometimes 2 tees on the drive. There is no shame in hitting shorter drives. Leave the ego in the trunk of your car.

Honestly this mentality helped me get 80% of that the other 20% was cleaning up my short game with more consistent chipping. Matt - you warned us that people would ridicule us for following the Way of the Playa. I had not experienced it until today. I had posted on a FB thread that I don't tee off with woods because I can't hit the fairway with them 7/10 times. He replied that my way sounded "boring" and that he liked to sacrifice accuracy for the 300+ yard drive and birdie opportunites. He went on that only 1 PGA Pro this year had 70% accuracy. I couldn't help but hear your warning in my head as I read his reply. I simply replied that I liked scoring as low as possible and that teeing off with my 5i afforded me that opportunity. :) Amazing that I finally ran into someone who poo pooed this system.

I've had the same sort of comments on my channel. Boring! Yeah right, because losing £10 of balls every round is 'fun'. I think a 3 hybrid is a great club to tee off with, 19 or 20 degrees, short shaft and some of that lovely backspin that helps keep the ball straighter. I hope you will consider moving up to that club as confidence and skill level grows. An extra 20 yards over a 5 iron will certainly help you for little risk of going sideways.

My goal was to break bogey each round and I did. I came in 3rd. One key I had worked on was some simpler chipping techniques he covers. Some of his thinking is covered in Bob Rotelli's book but his demonstration on the course was the superb. I look forward to watching more of his videos.

Watching your video I realize that I haven't been playing to achieve any particular score. Instead, I've been approaching each shot just hoping to hit a good shot with the "right club" for the distance, rather than employing any kind of strategy at all. The other issue I have is that I really want to hit my driver on every par 4+ tee, even though it's my least accurate club, so I have to get over that. I'm watching this video several times to make sure I understand the mindset. Thank you for putting this together!

This is a great framework to have top of mind while playing a round. Setting the goal at a bogie helps tremendously to stop making poor decisions when out of position. It helps me to have a clear goal with each shot; especially when out of position. If I'm in the rough then job 1 is to get out of the rough. In the bunker? Get out of the bunker. No hero shots. Thinking this way has restructured my bag and improved my scores. Losing confidence in 5 iron? Let's take that out of the bag in favor of a 25 degree hybrid. Shaky with a 6 iron? If long is okay then hit the hybrid or stay short for an up and down. This way of thinking has gotten me back on track. Cheers!

Great video and a good reminder for me also! I'm a 14 handicap, but as I have got it down, I have started to get frustrated with myself when not shooting mid-low 80's! I guess I shouldn't expect it every round, and should still be happy enough with a 90! The best rounds are when you play golf with this mindset, and try to enjoy it at the same time!! Thanks for the video 👍

I’ve been playing this way for years. (And my buddies make fun of me from time to time.) I keep score in my head against Bogey Par. The great thing about that is you can actually make it go down just by making pars. If you need a birdie to make your score going down, it’s probably not going down. It makes a big mental difference to be “-2” after 15 holes than +13.

Break it down into manageable chunks…Best part is, I’m enjoying the game so much more now, my last 3 posted scores are 83, 89, 84. By playing smart , surprise pars are a real thing! Thank You !!!

Like your advice. Makes sense. Takes the stress out of the game. I’m a single figure golfer but accept that bogeys happen. What I have to plan for is not to have double bogeys or worse. Play for an easy bogey and the pars just seem to happen. I spend my time practicing the 1.2 m puts.

It’s amazing when you have 0 to 1 oob per round instead of 5, and you are playing for smart shots in the fairway, smart misses around the green it’s how it just seems like boogie boogie par par par birdie boogie. Eventually from longer tees I’ll need a driver, but for now it’s really a confidence builder

I took exactly this advice from you last season and hit mostly a 6 I-RON off the tee, just to avoid the shizzle, even on a long par 5, and still got almost to the hole in reg, chip, one putt, parski. The advice to leave myself my favourite club for a 100m approach by planning backwards from the green on Google Earth and avoid the crap between there and the tee and just keep the ball in play is gold. result, lowest round of the year with an 83. I am 14.3 hcp. I just dont know why I dont do that every time. (well I do, because of BDE) Because if I was shooting low 80s all the time, I´d be in single figures by now.

I was a 15 hcp when I was 12 and used a similar thought process. First shot is free so put it on the fairway not under a tree. 5 iron straight down the middle make par from there. Secondly, trouble behind a green is rarely as bad as in front so be long rather than short. Thirdly, your worst putt is usually better than your best chip, putt if you can from off the green

Funny how I found this video today. This is my approach to the game now until I can confidently hit my driver and 3 wood without ending up OB or losing my ball. I figured I can hit my irons 170-200. I always mess up on my tee shot and second shot. I figured I lessen the likely good of double or triple bogeys if I just played the exact way you are explaining here.

We regularly play this par 5 hole with a super narrow fairway that is tree-lined. Lots of time and aggravation looking for people's balls in the woods. So iI tried hitting three 6 irons...I hit one good, one weak and one flush... and I was on the green. Nearly sunk my long putt. I parred. The rest took 7s and and 8. They said my way wasn't golf. Oh well. :)
