  • In a series of 3 videos, The Seamaster Chronicles, we will explain how a watch that sprouted from the watches that Omega delivered to the Royal Air Force during WWII, has become so much more.
The very first Seamaster was introduced by Omega 70 years ago, in 1948. It has grown to become a large collection, where you can find not one iconic watch but a host of iconic pieces - with elegant dress watches from the 1960s to big and rugged professional dive watches.
This year, in 2018, Omega celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Seamaster and the 25th anniversary of the Seamaster Diver 300M, a.k.a the James Bond 007 Watch.
In this first part of the Seamaster Chronicles, MONOCHROME will be talking to Omega's International Brand Heritage Manager and Museum Director, Petros Protopapas, about the history of the icon that is the Omega Seamaster.

Omega was leagues ahead of Rolex from a technical standpoint and this is even more true today. Omega is king!

Why is the *_Seamaster Automatic Chronometer 200M COSC alias "Pre-Bond" Diver_* not being mentioned *_at all_* in any Seamaster chronicles?
Is by chance Omega reluctant of remembering the times they were down in the market preferences and their acquisition by Swatch? I still remember the ads with a picture of Jacques Mayol in every dive magazine. during the late 80's and early 90's.
When my wife got scuba certified in 1988 I gave her one of those; a beautiful ladies' quartz piece in steel and gold with a nice caliber that features an independently adjustable hour hand (something that never reappeared in the "Bond" line). She still wears it from time to time although she gravitates to larger pieces nowadays, sometimes commandeering some of mine.
Missed getting me one because I already had a Submariner and a great Seiko 600m but still prowl the net for one from time to time.
Some years later I got me a Suunto dive computer and never looked back but nevertheless added a Seamaster to my collection in 2000 from Wempe across the Friedrichßtr from my hotel in Berlin. 😄

Wished OMEGA was an independent brand , instead of being under the Swatch Group of Companies and made their own movements in-house. Now, many watch brands under the Swatch group of Companies have a modified ETA movement and not really considered a fully in-house movement in my opinion since ETA is a movement maker and is owned by the SWATCH Group. Basically, we are just paying for a modified ETA movement from watch brands like OMEGA, Hamilton, Tissot and Longines , just to name a few - all these brands have movements that are based off the ETA movement but modified, which is what I read from many watch blogs on the world wide web. To be honest, I was seriously looking at the OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra and really in love with that watch but held back buying another watch made by the the Swatch Group of Companies due to the above reason. Even Rolex and Seiko have their movements made in-house, even up till this day, so why can't OMEGA ? Even though you can say that ETA made the coaxial movements exclusively only for OMEGA but these movements are at the end of the day still made by ETA and not OMEGA, so in my opinion cannot be considered an in-house movement.

Would like to learn more about the Cousteau divers team testing out the Omega Seamaster 300 during the 1963 Precontinent II experiment conducted in the Red Sea...
Otherwise video sadly illustrates how the Seamaster went from toolwatch to glitterball...
