When I have had plants WAY TOO WET I literally plop it in a tray or vessel (in the pot with holes) and line the tray with a microfiber cloth. It wicks away the excess moisture in a sane way and doesn't further disturb the soil or roots. No mess and it's washable!
This is the first time I've commented on UA-cam because you definitely deserved to be complimented for how awesome you are are explaining things and educating people on houseplants. I appreciate many of your videos and enjoy watching them to learn things I didn't know. You are awesome and thank you
Almost all the info in this video could just as easily apply to plants that are distressed no matter where you got them, imported or not. Thanks for the info, very helpful.
You are excellent in providing real, useful info. I have just purchased a spiritus sancti and a Queen anthurium. Queen came damaged(I got a partial refund). It is in a very high 85% humidity cloche and I am following your plan to expose it to lower humidity over time.(each day). It looks limp right now but going to keep it out for a couple of hours before back to cloche. It is in perfect medium so no concern there. Came with a pretty good root system. I thank you for your skill and streams!!
Thank you for this! I just got a plant at an ecuagenera pop up, and I’m hoping it does well. It does look really good for an import so I’m hoping for success.
Thank you Drea for another great video. I always excitedly wait for Wed and Sat to watch new video. You do the research, always well prepared and make videos very educational but fun in the same time. Please, if you like philodendrons (climbers, crawlers or rosette), do make some future videos on those. I use your video “climbers vs. crawlers” as a reference video and I already shared with a few of my plant friends! Thanks again!
Some friends always have trouble with plants overseas, research, research research. Check for all policies with company, reputation, reviews. I have not done this, but do be careful.
Another great video!!!! Please tell me where you get the wider clear plastic nursery pots? I looked in your Amazon storefront but I didn't see them. Thanks again :)
They’re actually pot liners that I buy from my local nursery but I’ve seen them at Lowe’s stores before too: www.lowes.com/pd/Orbit-8-in-Deep-Clear-Plastic-Saucer/5001375679
Hi Drea, I have a question about how you left the yellow leaves on the plant. I thought whenever there’s yellow or yellow-ish leaves, you’re supposed to remove them right away so that the plant spends more energy on new leaves. Is that not the case? Wasn’t sure what the best course of action would be. Loved the video and channel. I just imported some plants from Thailand for the first time and I’m preparing for that :)
If they’re totally yellow, then yes, remove them but if they still have some green you wanna leave them until they go totally yellow because with imports we’re worried about the roots recovering first and if there’s not enough foliage to process light and use up the water around the roots then there’s a bigger risk of root rot
Awesome, thank you- that’s very helpful. Btw if you ever do a video on how to salvage damaged plants, that would be great. I’m trying to save an imported plant that had root rot and I chopped it and threw it in water. Hopes and prayers for my red Aglaonema lol.
Have you done a video and how to remove certain types of substrates. For example, rockwool it extremely difficult for me. And sphagnum Moss has a tendency to ripping off all of the fine roots. My question would be how much is too much to tear off of your plants' roots ystems versus how much older media is stuck to them?
Really just depends on the particular plant and the ambient humidity in your home. I would leave them in higher humidity for at least a month if possible since typically (at least in my experience) that’s how long it takes to really see significant root growth start back up.
Do you have to pay customs tax when you import? Have you ever had any refused at import? I'm thinking about importing but these 2 questions are what's holding me back.
Yes, I have to pay duty taxes but I’m not sure of exactly how that is figured. I tried researching it back in March and found all the information very confusing and it seems it varies depending on carrier too, as they act as your ‘broker’ and charge you for that. So I think you pay a percentage of the value of your items in tax and then whatever brokerage fee they carrier charges you. My first shipment came via UPS and I had to pay $80. With the shipments that have come via DHL the most I’ve had to pay is $25. However, I had one order from DHL that I didn’t have to pay anything on, but it was also my smallest order, so maybe if it’s under a certain number of plants you don’t get charged duty taxes🤷♀️. Like I said, highly confusing. I’ve never had any refused.
Do you happen to know the subspecies of your adansonii? Mine looks similar except I think yours may be narrow form. I have not seen another one that has so many holes on such a juvenile plant though!
@@AlohaPlantLife I didnt even notice it was variegated! the leaf shape and the large holes is what had me wondering!!! so many have smaller holes aka fenestrations :P
Many thanks for this thorough and informative video! Excellent suggestions and realistic information on what to expect when you receive imported plants. Great job! 👌👏🪴🥰
You’re welcome and thanks! I really wanted to be able to show my plants start to finish because it’s one thing to just sit and explain what might happen but I think it’s way more useful to you all to be able to see real examples of what to expect 💚

Brilliant, especially for a new plant. I acclimate mine for a while before repotting.
