Living with the Nissan Z (RZ34) & NISMO Z: It’s Complicated.

- After a two year hiatus, MotoMan gets back behind the wheel of the @Nissan RZ34, a/k/a @nissanusa Z - this time the 2024 Nissan Z NISMO, but not for a review - rather to learn two things: 1.) What is it like to live with one of the few remaining affordable sports cars on offer today and 2.) How does it stack up against the obvious competition, the @toyotausa Supra and @Chevrolet Corvette?

I live in Vegas, and people love their flashy cars here. In the 2 ish years the “new” Z has been on sale, I have seen a grand total of one of these bad boys on the road.
Interesting point and one I did not bring up in the episode. This car garners A LOT of attention in parking lots. Many don't know what it is and comment on how much they like the design. However, the majority of the folks that come up to you when you park this car are Z freaks that know the car backwards, forwards and all have an opinion on it. Got a smaller subsection of folks who had never seen the NISMO in person before. It was almost impossible to get out of the Costco parking lot the two times I took it there.
Same I seen one in Vegas it was. Black Z lol
@ the one I saw was black too. Probably the same one!
I love the way it looks, but yes the lack of manual transmission is disappointing. At least there is a front end conversion kit out there for the regular Z
I drive mine about as much as I can and love it. Living in Western NC makes it easier though!
When they launched the Z with a manual, people were mocking the automatic only supra only offered at the time. Why nissan didnt carry over the manual to the nismo variant is still beyond dumb.
they never made a manual gtr
@Malaphisis they never made an automatic GTR neither. GTRs were manual until the R35, which then came with a 6 speed DCT.
We're talking about the Nissan z bud.@@Malaphisis
Look at the gtr, stop crying
@@Geor_546 AWD supercar where the technology could not support a manual variant, vs a heavily recycled car where the marketing team could not stop mentioning that it came with a manual.
I know the “real” reason they didn’t offer a manual that’s not the lap times BS, but this car is nothing of what the GTR is.
The Nismo beat a new M2 around VIR in the Car and Driver Lightning Lap testing. They loved it.
Yes, but as was the point of this episode, for the vast majority of folks, there are is so much more that goes into what daily we choose and why.
I appreciate not kicking the dead horse about the lack of manual transmission. We all know it's an L, so it's nice that you chose not to focus on it like others do.
Motoman’s critique and suggestions are just about perfect. My only additional serious want could only happen on an all new chassis…I really want the long hood proportions of the original car back. I do share the love though. I think the Z might have been the second car I really drooled over as a kid right after the Pontiac Trans Am.
I just wanted the G37 IPL to stay around until I could have afforded it.
Always great videos, keep fighting the good fight.
Thank you . . . our pleasure!
The look of this car from behind just really woks for me.
I loved my 77 280Z...used it as a daily driver but always had to stop at the gas station with such a small tank.
It resembles a very ugly fish.
I’m shopping around for a 3rd car and the Z is on my list. I totally agree that this car’s pricing makes no sense when the Corvette exists but C8’s are harder to find. I can spit and find a Nismo. I’m also finding them with $5-6K in discounts. That said, I think you’ve made a compelling argument that this car should be the performance trim and not the Nismo. The Nismo should have something crazy like the GTR’s engine.
That said, the Z performance may still be on my shopping list. I’ve heard it described as more of a GT and that may be what I’m after. Also, my wife loves the look of the new Z and she want’s to drive it too. So there’s that.
But the Corvette is ugly though, like really really ugly.
As much as l love V8s, I'd rather have a regular Z over the C8. I just can't get over how the Vette looks, inside and out.
But i digress, the Nismo has a much better stance than the one you drove from Vegas to LA a few years ago. I just wish the Nismo folks sprinkled some extra goodness on the exterior, it's almost too generic compared to the previous Nismo Z.
One last observation, WHAT IS THAT SHIFTER?!
excellent work, M.
Kinda agree with the looks of the vette and if I want a 2 door tuner it’s the Supra or a m240i
Rather have the Supra and or a much cheaper M240i
The only thing about the Vette that really bugs me is that fat ass on the thing. Aesthetically, the price to carry a golf bag is too high in a modern sports car. GM should have let that "fixed point" go away with the C7.
WOW! Tell me how you really feel about the Corvette:)
@@MotoManTVI think he was being nice against the Chevrolet. He could've said way worse
I was at the dealership with my 370Z getting routine maintenance a few months ago. They had this same spec Nismo Z in the showroom in the same color. Loved the color, hated the interior. The seats are way too tight, even for a Nismo. I have had race seats before and they were far more comfortable than the Nismo Z, but again, that's just my experience, and I am of average size, not a big guy, and they still are too tight. It wouldn't be very comfortable for a long trip. I would put all my money on the Toyota Supra which I am trying to upgrade from my 370Z. I still love my 370Z and it's ten years old with only 20,000 miles so I only use it occasionally as a weekend/nice day type of car, not a daily driver. But even after ten years, my 2014 370Z still looks, smells, and drives like brand new. The only other thing I hated about the new Nismo Z was that gosh awful gear selector. ITS HORRIBLE! Nissan needs to re-think that thing. They need to go back to the automatic gear selector from the 370Z which is WAY WAY better and looks far better too. I know, I have an automatic. I rented a Nissan with that new shifter twice, and I absolutely hated it. I would buy a manual Z before I bought a Nismo with that gosh awful gear selector. It totally SUCKS! The price for the Nismo Z is way too high too. $50,000 is a more realistic price for that car. There is no WAY I would pay $65,000+ for that Nismo. NO WAY. Put your money on a really nice Supra for that money. As much as I love my 370Z, I think Nissan botched the new Z. Great engine, but they should have kept the body style of the 370Z and just enhanced it instead of trying to bring in all the gosh darn attributes of all the Z's before it. I do like the colors they are offering on the new Z, but that's about it.
For me a GT needs to blend sport and comfort, in the line of being almost a daily driver and a car that can handle twisty roads on the weekends. The current Supra is immediately out of the question for the reason of comfort. The Corvette as much as I like the overall exterior shape, there are bits on the rear headlights and the overall interior design that I makes me change my mind. Then there is the Z, I feel like it is almost there but. The interior headroom could benefit from a little more space, and open option might help, as you said. The seats need to be improved. And the most important part, the interior needs to feel more current and not something designed in the 80s. Give me the base with those improvements and a manual transmission and tell me where to sign.
Such a disappointment. Way too little way too late. Stupid price.
Don't forget the dealer markups are not helping a struggling brand.
Now, if this NISMO was about 10k less and same goes for the lower trims, it may have some fighting chance sales wise.
In our research for this episode, we didn't see that both in Florida and California - even for the NISMO.
There's two around here in CT new going for $57k
@@MotoManTVl don’t know where and when in California you researched that no markup on this overpriced Z. My Nissan sports car was a 1992 Nissan Z32 (300Zx Twin Turbo) to 370Z Touring . Besides paying the dealership markup for the Z32 (very difficult to get at that time), my 2004 350Z was bought at MSRP (sticker price), and 2011 370Z was below sticker price. The local Southern California Nissan dealer was marking the NISMO Z like it’s a rare GTR in the past. Honestly, I wouldn’t buy it even at sticker. One would wonder how Nissan went from an innovation engineering automobile company to just making also-run car manufacturer. My relatives in Japan are not too fond of Nissan nowadays.
So i was looking at this car in Australia and was intrigued by the video. Everything seems nice to me, and i prefer this car to the supra's looks.
Interestingly, the price if the Z Nismo here is significantly cheaper than a corvette stingray. (The Nismo brand new is a bit over 100k aud) whilst a Stingray is a minimum of 175k aud brand new. This certainly makes the Nissan much more of a "comparatively better" offering. But now I'm curious how it does against other cars in the 100k price range here in Aus.
I love the rear end on this thing, someone needs to find a way to swap the OEM rear on the GR86 with this!! hahahah
If you squint and tilt your head to the side, you can see a little Z32 in the taillights.
You are wrong on so many levels. You keep referring to the Supra and having a manual option. They do, but it's in such low numbers it's impossible to find at a good deal.
You are correct about the Nismo. It should not be more than 50k US dollars new. A Performance model 42k, and Base 38k. These cars are extremely overpriced!!
Im in the Orlando area, and I have seen a Maserati MC-20 before finally seeing a Z on the road.
100% spot on, MM, full stop! Cheers/B
There's a tremendous aftermarket for Z cars. You don't like your seats? Change them. You hate your suspension? Go to Z1 and order the parts. You hate the brake/wheel package? Rip them off and replace them. The main issue with the "new" Z are the insane dealer markups. No one in their right minds are paying that much for a Nissan.
Dug around A LOT while researching this episode and could not find one mark up on these - Base or NISMO - either in LA, where I live, and Florida, where I shot the car.
Bad video quality, your audio needs work. and I don't care to watch you bouncing around on the broken unpaved roads. Better luck next time.
Those rough roads probably reminded you of Palos Verdes Drive South at Portuguese Bend.
My 'secret' shoot road in Florida makes that spot in Portuguese Bend look like glass . . .
@@MotoManTVWow. That's really saying something. I wouldn't want to drive a car I own on that road then.
Yeah, the roads are bad like that in Germany too now. It's getting worse every year 😐. I would love to see the new Z here. Thank you for the "bumpy" ride 😅
I have a used Nismo Z in my hometown that is going for $55k, it only has 1500 miles on it. Looks like one hell of a bargain. Car is great but unfortunately it has some stiff competition.
Still the best car guy on the internet.
Gtr motor would have went a long way.
As technology advances, enthusiasts get less and less of what THEY want. In pretty much all sectors...
It seems you were in Palm Beach County when you filmed this video. There are better roads than the side roads off of 441 by 20 miles bend. Those roads are constantly abused by the huge and very heavy trucks transporting sugar cane from the fields. There are many smooth roads in the area.
There are “bends” north of Ocala. That’s the best we can do though.
You know the area well:) Florida is always tough filming for us as the roads are uninteresting on camera and have no curves. Yes, there are better choices but we need the least amount of traffic in order to work through our shot list.
@ understood. I just don’t want your fans to think all the roads in Florida are that bad. It is still great content. I’m a big fan 👍🏼
Hopefully they figure out how to sell these so I can get a used one at a decent price in a few years. My g37 could use a younger brother.
I’d love a version with a manual and the VQ37HR for $10K less.
6:01 when he said bulletproof he definitely doesn’t know anything about these cars
the screaming in the mike bro.... gonna pass on this review
Truer word was never spoken
Great video as always! Prop rod hood cars for this kind of money?, Un-satisfactory. Arse end look of this thing, SMH. Love their tact with the tires.
I have yet to see amnesia new Z in the wild in thegreater Boston area and I commute everyday
the audio in this video is horrible.. he's either mumbling or yelling at you
This really seems to be phoned in by Nissan. The market's far too competitive (and the sports car market too small) for this warmed over previous generation car. The basic exterior design is really attractive, but nothing else stands out.
The biggest issue with the new Z is that relative price. You are correct this car should not be competing against Corvettes. You are correct the Nismo tuning should essentially be the base car and then it should also be more closely priced to the base car (maybe the revised base car pricing goes up a little but the fully loaded model shouldn't be above say $58k). And I would also put that heritage edition front fascia as the official styling for all Zs. Do that and you might have an actually competitive seller. But this car being over 65k just makes no sense in a world with the Corvette and oh btw the BMW M2.
I was going to bring up the M2 but I envisioned an army of negative comments about my bias for that car and German cars in general, but yes!
This Nismo with a manual transmission would depreciate less. The Vet doesn’t and will not come in a manual.
thats the problem. they are not going to build it.
Ever since Renault bought Nissan or own the majority of the company their reliability tanked! Up until the late 90s Nissan had a great reputation for their reliability, Renault took all the away. Their designs became more European, nice to look at but it ends there.
7:43 good to know that all my girlfriends will find the ride too stiff
Holy heck! 3700 lbs?! Heffer
I don't see this generation Z car on the road, ever. 🛣️ Not at all. 🛑
If they had an awd model I'd probably buy one.
So you like a worse handling car that would be heavier…. Awd often kills driving feel and feedback for the sake of grip.
@@naisbest3020 I love gay cars.
No you wouldn’t idot
@naisbest3020 I live in Ohio and daily drive my cars. I need grip. Lol
If I could afford a toy sports car then I still wouldn't buy a rwd car. Except for maybe a Corvette.
@@Robocop4Ever Subarus need loving too.
how about a sound warning good grief
performance is the way to go, 10k for 20 hp is beyond me.
Perhpas, the downfall is due to lack of excellence.
Automatic all day 😂
The Nismo should have a manual.
Its like deja vu. The last time the Z was twin turbo the Corvette was also a problem to its market performance!
Anyway if we want an improved and cheaper Z, ironically the masses need to buy more baby buggies 😅
Fair point but VERY different fighters in the ring this time. The Corvette today is not just credible 'because of the price'. It is credible, period. Also, the delta between the two is off the charts.
The only car from Nissan that is any good and no one can buy it because of dealer greed. Nissan has been so poorly managed.
aren’t these like 70k . Nissan is smoking something insane
I think the car needs a paint job that has depth and beauty. These flat, cheap looking paint jobs look like student grade acrylic paints in a middle school classroom.
This is a complete failure. Nissan had decades to get it right and they blew it.
Don't be a sucker and buy one.
Overpriced by $20k
They haven't been selling because of supply chain issues. Don't be an idiot.
Wrong nobody wants one
These things are so damn ugly. I live in a large city and still have yet to see a new Z on the road and I'm not even talking about the NISMO. Nissan is DOA.
I don’t like the look of the Corvette either but that’s just my opinion so… irrelevant comment isn’t it?
@Crownleyian Not exactly. The corvette sells. This doesn't.
First!!
Now get out!
