    FIRST LEAK LOCATION (Condition 3 in TSB): In this video I discuss my troubleshooting efforts and repair to fix a leaking sunroof. The driver and passenger rear drain tube assemblies (plastic) that attach to the drain channels (metal) have silicone attaching them to prevent leakage. The seal had deteriorated so I cleaned them and reapplied silicone. This fixed the first leak from the sunroof drain that I was having.
    SECOND LEAK LOCATION FOUND AFTER THIS VIDEO WAS SHOT (Condition 3 in TSB): After the repairs above I still was having a leak from the rear c-pillar on the driver side(where the drain hose is routed into). (To note: this is a separate leak because the location I fixed in the video was also leaking) To access the rear c-pillar I had to remove the rear seat. (The rear seat is removed for 60/40 seats by using a 19mm socket to remove the 6 bolts holding it down.) Upon inspection, I found that the rear c-pillar has foam in it to create a barrier from the outside of the cab to the inside; there is a drain hole around the foam. This drain hole on the drive side was clogged. I tested the other side (passenger side) by dumping water down its C-pillar and it drained out the back of the cab (if you look under the cab at the back corner of the cab you can see this location), when I did this with the rear driver side, it leaked into the cab and no water came out the back of the cab. Using a thick medal rod (*evil laugh*) I punctured a hole through the foam to create another hole (as I couldn't really find the original drain hole), I also ran a tube through this new hole so it doesn't seal up again. Tested it and it worked perfectly. NO more leakage in my truck!!!
    My initial troubleshooting efforts:
    1) Checked front drains, verified clear by pouring water in front channel
    2) checked rear drains by removing rear column trim to access the rear drain tube. Poured water down side channel and found leakage near sunroof. Although some water did come out the drain (verifying clear).
    3) dropped the headliner. Poured water in side channel and found water leaking from rear plastic union that holds the rear drain.
    To Fix rear plastic drain assembly:
    1) remove plastic union. Detach hose.
    2) clean off old silicone with acetone.
    3)put new silicone in lower plastic body. Reattach hose with cable tie.
    4) reinstall plastic union. Let sit for 8 hrs up to 24 hours. I used a 30 min 100% silicone.
    5) Tested 8 hrs later and it worked perfectly.

    Hey Luke. Merry Xmas. Thanks for posting this. I have the leak from the sunroof and wet carpet on the drivers side rear. Actually it was all frozen water. I fixed the top and when I tested it the water wouldn’t drain to the outside but did drain on the Lower C pillar. I stated thinking maybe the drain h
    Hole was frozen so I came back in a read your update. I’ll be pulling the seat out later on to fix the drain on the lower C pillar but now it’s time to go play with our grand baby’s. Thanks again. This was very helpful.

    This was helpful. I have a '11 Tahoe and i leak in the front a pillar driver side only. I put a silicone hose down the drain plug and even compressed sprayed but when you put water on that side of sunroof, it drips down and seems to by pass the drain hose, as if its disconnected near where the drain plug is. Dont want to remove that front sun visor just to inspect but may have to or just block the drain plug and let it all go through passenger side and rears. I have a feeling that will turn out to be a disaster though....

    I have an 06 and my passenger front piller drain tube is a pvc type and it is completely breaking apart like old hot water pvc, I read on one of your comments that they don’t drop all the way down as I was thinking about buying vinyl tubing and making new ones since they discontinued the 2006 and later model drain tubes

    Great video! My headliner on my 2011 gets SOAKED every time it rains. I took it to the dealer and they acted like they’ve never seen a sunroof in a Silverado 🤨 anyway they couldn’t find any leaks in the drains but didn’t mention the mail seal or the “gutter” that you re-sealed. Any suggestions on where to start?

    • @lukeb2

      I would drop the headliner (similar to what I did in the video) and then do some water tests. Meaning pour water on the sunroof and see where the leaks come in. It’s the easiest way to troubleshoot. It’s a little bit of pain to drop the headliner but will be worth it to see where the leak is actually coming from.

    I had the same issue on the rears and I fixed it the same way you did. Now, I occasionally get water tracks on the inside of the windshield. I’m wondering if the front drains are doing the same…

    Good Morning Luke..hope all is well. I used your video to help me replace both drain tubes. I didn't want to dicker around with them, and for less than $15 each, I swapped them both out. I'm going to use the old ones as backup. I'll need to figure out what type of adhesive/glue to use to keep both fittings attached to the drain tube. My question for you is this....It's raining like hell today here in Jersey. I went out to the truck to check for any water leaks/intrusion. All looked well, except for the rear passenger corner. Where the headliner meets the top of the seat belt cover/panel. It's not soaked, but it's definitely wet (around a 4" area). Anything that you can think of that's still causing the problem? I know a "certain amount" of water is allowed to bypass the seal. In the 3:56 mark of your video, you talk about using silicone. Could that area still be the culprit? If it's leaking from there, would water still migrate to that corner?

      Hey John, Thanks for the comment. A couple things come to mind regarding your issue. First the drain tubes. Did you reattach them to the male end of the plastic assembly with anything? I know that from the factory they come with Zip ties around the tubes, so that keep it snug and from leaking. That may be one location of your leak. Secondly, in my video I also point out that the rear plastic assemblies (i.e. the piece that connects the metal channels of the sunroof to the rear drain tubes) needed to be re-sealed as the original seal had deteriorated. If you haven't re-sealed these plastic assemblies back on to the metal channels, I feel that is your leaking source (as this was the source of mine). Also based on where you are getting water, it sounds like that it is leaking from there as well. Hope this helps.

      @@lukeb2 Luke..thanks for getting back to me. My old tubes didn't have a zip tie on them???. The new tubes went snugly on to the nipple of the item that you are refering to (GM calls them the GUTTER, Sun Roof) Here's the link, ITEM # 9 www.wholesalegmpartsonline.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=373633&ukey_product=2933693 Are you suggesting that I take the gutters off (items #9) and somehow reseal/silicone them? I also, slid the sunroof shade/visor back and felt around from the inside of the glass seal. My fingers tips were covered in water. I went ahead and ordered a new seal for good measure.

    Did this fix the problem? Also did you just run a bead of silicone around the edge of the drip tray?

    • @lukeb2
      @lukeb2  3 роки тому

      Yeah it did. Also read the description to for other things I had to do. But the silicone around the edge helped and I haven't had a leak in years since I did htis

    Hello..great video..thanks for sharing. Quick question..for the rear drain tubes, is there an actual exit/drain hole underneath the truck? I can seem to locate it? I see where rear tube goes into the rear pillar. I was going to pull it out but it's not rubber, it's like a pvc material? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @lukeb2
      @lukeb2  4 роки тому +3

      Hey John, So the tube runs down the pillar and stops about a foot short of the bottom of the rear pillar. The water is then directed down the remainder of the pillar to an exit hole in the bottom of the pillar. If you get under the truck at the rear pillar and look up you'll see an opening underneath the pillar. (You won't be able to see or really get to the end of the tube though from here) Here is a drawing: www.performancetrucks.net/forums/attachments/gmt-800-older-gm-general-discussion-130/137693d1501542538-sunroof-gasket-cody2.jpg I wouldn't recommend removing the drain tube from the pillar as it is a pain to get it back in. Are you trying to check if it is clear? If so you can either just blow in it (from the sunroof side) or stick some weed eater cord down it to verify it is clear. Hope this helps.

    • @johnbranca611
      @johnbranca611 4 роки тому +1

      Luke Barousse thank you for getting back to me so fast. Yes, that's exactly what I'm trying to do. I was able to take weed wacker cord and do the front two holes easily. However, I can not see the rear holes. I don't want to take the liner down just to pull the tubes off their fittings. I thought I could go from the exit hole up but, if you're saying that the tube falls a foot short then, I'm screwed. Hmm

    • @lukeb2
      @lukeb2  4 роки тому +1

      @@johnbranca611 Yeah I think you're gonna have to drop the headliner to get to it. It's not too difficult. But if you are having the same root issues that I had, then it is most likely that rear drain assembly seal that I show in the video that needs to be re-sealed.

    • @johnbranca611
      @johnbranca611 4 роки тому

      Luke Barousse if I lower the liner just a bit and pull those tubes off, I'll blow compressed air through it. Do the tubes get sealed or just pop on and off?

    • @lukeb2
      @lukeb2  4 роки тому

      @@johnbranca611 The tubes connect to the rear drain assembly via a zip tie... you can muscle the tubes off and back on without having to remove the tubes, but just be aware about the zip ties.

    Thanks for the video. Question about your second leak location. I seem to have the same thing going on my extended cab. I tried to punch through the foam with a screwdriver (Condition 4 in TSB www.tsbsearch.com/GMC/09-08-57-002D), but it doesnt seem to help much and water still flows inside instead of draining outside. Any more information/insight that you can provide on your second leak location?

    • @lukeb2
      @lukeb2  4 роки тому +1

      Actually, I did have problems with water building up in that rear pillar due to the foam blocking the exit (as mentioned in the TSB). I used a long ass screw driver to punch a hole that was sufficient to drain the water.... You have to punch a pretty big hole. I punched a small hole initially and it was still backing up into the truck like you were mentioning. After i was less conservative with my hole punch it no longer leaked back into the truck. Also make sure the bottom of the tube isn't too low and flush with the foam, this may cause blockage of the tube...

      Just following up for anyone here that has a similar problem. I punched a hole like the TSB and Luke recommended, but no dice. I ended up pulling the drain tube out, extending it with 3/8 OD 1/4 ID vinyl tubing. Fit like a glove. Routed it out and through the hole that I made earlier. That way I can see the water coming out of a tube. So far so good! Thanks again Luke.
