I was having a leak inside my 2007 RAV4. I was on the verge of taking it in and paying to have it looked at because my passenger seat was getting soaked every time it rained. Ran across this video, did the test as described, and sure enough the drain on that side had something in there that was restricting the flow as it too 30-60 seconds for water to start draining from the bottom and even then it was a trickle versus the driver said which was a near-instant gush. Hooked up an air blower and ran it for about 3 minutes and the flow greatly improved. The other night we received almost 2" of rain, and my seat was dry the next morning, no drips or anything. Thanks for saving me money.
Another mechanic channel warned against using pressurized air - the problem is it could pop the drain off the sunroof frame where you couldn’t see it, but you would now have a totally disconnected drain hose which would be even worse than a clogged one.
Worked great! Unclogged the top with a poker and a couple feet of wire then poured hot soapy water down through drains in both corners. You can see and hear when it starts to drain. Thank you!
My daughter just bought a very clean '08 C30. Since we had read that sunroof drains were an issue, they were one of the first things we tested, and sure enough the passenger side drained, but not outside. This video was very helpful, especially the extension idea - since the tube had pulled away at the dash connection. Thanks very much for the idea!
Thank you for not telling me to push something through the drain holes, I would've been lost if you had. My Prius C doesn't have easily accessible drain holes. Thankfully I have an electric air blower that worked wonders, though! I managed to dislodge a large chunk of finely packed dirt and debris using just the blower! Now it drains perfectly!
Thank you!!! When it rains, there is a leakage from my sunroof. . Sometimes, all kinds of lights come on. There should be a recall since a lot of people are having this problem. I opened my sunroof, cleaned around the inside sunroof, and all the lights went off. Lexus are pretty good vehicles. My vehicle is not that old, it's a 2014 rx350. She has many more miles to go. It's like the warranty runs out and she wants to do cartwheels. She needs to just calm down 🤣🤣🤣 I pray by me cleaning around it helped a little. It was dirty. 😨 My husb backed up the vehicle in the driveway, and oh my, the driver side floor was soaked...we had heavy rain. I told him that for the time being, don't back it in. There are not a lot of good, honest mechanics around now days but I would take my vehicle to the nearest O'Reilly if necessary. I pray I fixed the problem.🙏
I would not recommend using much air pressure at all the blow the drains out. If you totally sealed that rubber tip to the drain hole and the blockage happens to be a really tight one, it might not move....but SOMETHING is going to move, and usually it's the drain hose coming loose from the exit spout behind the dash or kick panel. And those aren't easy to get to. I'd start with running a long piece of trimmer cord down any drain first, and I never use compressed air. Ever.
That's because this video is useless and defective you should never use anything over 20 psi when blowing air into that drain, and if you want to clear them easily use white vinegar and water solution and pour it down and that will loosen anything up then grab some plastic tubing approximately quarter inch by 5 ft and send that down the hole moving it back and forth lightly and then flush with hot tap water and they'll be spotless
For anyone who is looking for a permanent seal for the sunroof that's not expensive and still looks right on the car , use 3m window weld ! , mask off everything but the rubber weather stripping, mask off the glass , and the paint on the roof where the weather stripping and roof come into contact. Lay one bead of window weld where the gap is between the 2 weather strips. Let it cure completely then lay another bead let it cure completely , unmask and boom ! Did this about 3 months ago before winter in ohio and works great heavy snow and rain and dry as a bone !
Typically cheap thin plastic. Plus the older the vehicle the more degraded the plastic and the greater your odds of damaging them. Better to use thin flimsy wire the first couple inches and unblock them that way first, then use air but NOT with a full seal, maybe an inch, half inch away at first.
driver side tube was obstructed by some flexible sealant, looks like it was there from new. Anyway, also blew air backward and think it will be good. Might blow rears tomorrow, but I could not find where in the frame there were since when it is open, it's going to want to cover them up. thank you !
I will need to try that. 2 days ago I got a puddle of water on the passenger side and the seat completely wet And diving home in the rain, I just notice that the leak is coming from the sunroof. I also notices that on the driver side is the sunroof the water runs off the sunroof but on the passenger side the seal is absolute water like crazy. Can it work a tire compressor?
I see this comment is about 6 months old, but to answer your question a tire compressor doesn't have enough pressure to blow it out. It's got a constant low amount of pressure to fill the tire but that's it. You would need to get a can of compressed air if I'm not mistaken, like something that can blow to keyboard. Unless you want to drop dime on an actual air compressor. I search a few more videos and found other similar fixes. There's always a way. Always.
I cleaned the drains, but it still leaks on the driver side from the headliner near teh a-pillar. I removed some parts and pulled down a corner of the headliner near the driver side leak. The drain hose is in good shape, but water is leaking from the plastics parts around the drain hole. how do i seal the leak?
This seems like the drain is too small for the amount of water entering the space. Which means that the seal between the glass and metal on your roof is allowing too much water to get in. See if you can get that gasket piece replaced. Does it pass the water cup test?
@@brewdaddydub5379 Sure mate ! In many models the stripping is sticked together in MANY parts (wtf ) and they can loosen over time (vibrations !). I´ve seen a video on yt, they had to take apart half the dashboard on each side (front) to get to the place of action - not very customer friendly !
I imagine because the sunroof is meant to open and close, a perfect seal would be impossible to maintain for long. That's what the drainage system is for.
A question, I put compressed air into it and the water did leak out, but when it rained, the roof on the passenger side was wet again, could it be the seal?
Using compressed air to blow a blockage out is asking for trouble. Why? If the dirt/blockage is too big to easily go through the drain tube, trying to force it through with compressed air may blow the drain tube off the tube at the corner of the sunroof, allowing the water to soak the headliner and on to the floorboards of the car. Follow this video's advice at your own risk. Blowing air through the bottom of the tube IF you can find it may work,BUT is also somewhat risky. Best way to try to remove a blockage is to use a reducer nozzle on a shopvac. If you don't have a reducer nozzle for your vac, simply use a small funnel, putting the small end in the drain hole and shoving the vac hose into the big end. This should suck any foreign stuff out with no danger of blowing the drain tube off.
🙌 👏 🙏 🤝 👍 exactly mate ! Thats why old repairing manuals always recommend cleaning it (tenderly :P) with an old (and l o n g ) odo-/ speedometer spiral !
I’ve a brand new moon roof on my LandCruiser but guess what, after driving in the rain, water gets trapped inside that “rubber band” that surrounds the glass moon roof. After a few months, the rust becomes visible from the inside. And there’s nothing the agent can do except to replace it, again. Frustrating! Btw, nothing wrong with the 2 drain tubes, rain water still flows smoothly through them.
Do not use compressed air on some cars like Chevrolet and Saturns the tube is not sealed to the frame it's just sitting on it you use compressed air you can blow the tube off of the frame and then it'll drain all over the dashboard and get your carpet soaking wet use a thin long cable to shove down the tube and there are four of them not just two in the front ice install centers I know this for a fact my name is Bart Wynn my family owned Wynns Auto and Hampton Roads Sunroofs

You are much better off to use a shop vac to suck out any debri from drain or carefully feed .095 trimmer line down the line to clear any clogs without damaging the drain tubing. Once water drains through you could carefully use some compressed air to totally clear drains. Just don't put air nozzle tight to drain opening and risk blowing hose off from fittings possibly requiring removal of head liner to fix.
