That is the problem. both make good action movies but those are NOT Bond Movies.
Arguably Dalton's efforts might be the closest to the original Ian FLeming Novels, but that is the problem... Bond as a Movie Franchise has far outgrown the pretty bland and unexciting "government assassin with police tasks" stories that Fleming liked to tell. The suavity, grandiosity and Gadgets ARE an important part of the movie flavour and Dalton and Craig totally forget that to "reinvent" Bond in a way it never needed reinventing.
Dalton and Craig are probably the best Bournes out there, but that does not make a Bond, James Bond!

Moore the funniest and great screen presence english gentlemen, class . craig very good ,physical but Lacks, panache, class, Sophistication, charisma .Lazenby could see a possible great bond by doing 2 more films . Those who like Dalton seem to really like him, but for most of us he just isn’t Bond. He lacks the screen presence and witty charm that a Bond actor needs in the role. That’s why the audience didn’t take to him.

I remember the release of Goldeneye very well and yes, the success of that film and Brosnan in the role, was used as a way to further criticise Dalton. There was even a brief clip on BBC's Film 95 with Barry Norman, with a pre-fame Idris Alba declaring "he was much better than the last one!" ; so bizarre to see in retrospect.
I was a fan of both at the time, but it does feel like Dalton's short run has aged better than Brosnan's, despite initial success.

I think that's harsh on Brosnan, since he was the first actor after Connery to look at ease in the role. The quality of the scripts and the lack of any real clear characterisation for his Bond isn't his fault and didn't de-rail his performance level. Dalton has always been a favorite of mine, but I would rate Brosnan higher. The reason is that Dalton, while a very talented actor, doesn't really have one vital element. He has the movie star good looks and the movie star screen presence, but he doesn't have the movie star charisma, because he's all about doing a professional job as an actor and not about bringing 'personality' to his roles. That's just the kind of actor he is. Bond requires both good acting and that special 'X' element of movie stars. And so Connery has to be the best Bond.

I feel the exact same way about Roger Moore, having said that, I think in Octopussy, in two scenes, he is the most James Bond of all James Bonds. When he changes the egg at the auction and then the scene when he first meets Kamal Khan. He's just so confrontational and in your face. But really, I think they all did a good job and they all play the character slightly different. Thankfully the Bond property is not owned by Disney, otherwise we'd have the same character all the time.

    • @tgriffin3059

Roger Moore was capable of bringing a harder edge to the character than many people assume. When he put the beating on Scaramanga's ladyfriend...not just the violence, but also the scathing contempt with which he addressed her....no other Bond could be any colder or, frankly, downright meaner. He basically told her, to her face, that she was not worth the price of one of Scaramanga's gold bullets. I think the social arrogance came more naturally to Moore than to any of the other Bonds, frankly. And at the end of Moonraker, when Bond has to use a laser to destroy the pods that are heading for our planet....look at Moore's features in those closeups...he looks every bit as cold and steely as Eastwood...If you don't believe me, go back and look for yourself...Roger Moore was a truly great Bond. I'd still rank Connery first, and probably Dalton in a tie with Moore for second...but Moore is definitely the most underrated...Other Bonds, like Dalton and Craig, enter a room looking more belligerent...Connery was aloof and cool, like Moore, but was still more overtly intimidating because of his powerful frame...Moore's lethality often seemed to come from out of nowhere, with his elegance and choir director manners...but when it manifested, it was always convincing...Like when he let the bald guy drop off the rooftop in The Spy Who Loved Me, or when he kicked Locque's car off the cliff in For Your Eyes Only...

I'm glad that you pointed out the fact that Sean Connery moved with catlike grace. None of the other bond actors moved quite that way. There is a scene in Thunderball when he is entering the casino via a motorboat and he hops out of the boat so elegantly that it almost seems like it was shot in slow motion, but it wasn't. It was all due to the gracefulness of Sean Connery's movements that made it appear that way.

For a list that ranks the actors it seems to put too much weight on the quality of the films rather than the actor's ability to play Bond. Still a good look at their performances. Glad to at least see Dalton towards to top end. Brosnan deserved to be higher up, but I guess a lot of that depends on where you stand on Moore. Interesting to see how our perception of these actors changes with time.

    • @ObiKKa
      @ObiKKa 2 роки тому

      Absolutely agreed.
This ranking method seems to be based more on the quality of the movies that each Bond actor has been handed. The title should clarify this, or at least the description should outright state that.
This is a very misleading list. Brosnan shouldn't be fifth best. Instead he's second best to me, closely behind Connery. To me, it's more about how well each of the actors has been able to emulate the Bond character in the movies.
And, no, Die Another Day (4:20) is definitely not the worst. That unfortunate honour goes to Craig's botched Quantum of Solace, which is not even a Bond film at all! But Die Another Day is second worst for me, though.
And the JoBlo videos team, especially the regular host Chris Bumbray, is full of virtue signalling to the Twitter crowd. Putting the very enjoyable Roger Moore down into 4th behind the bland, boring, too moody Timothy Dalton? What gives. Nitpicking at elements of one film, that the host and the actor himself did not like, automatically does not mar the thrilling and comedic qualities of practically all of Moore's Bond films. For me, five or four of his films are good (exceptions are Moonraker & his last film), and almost all are still re-watchable, just like Connery's era. I think Craig does Bond well, but there's just no humour or fun to his character unlike the 20th century Bond films. I just couldn't bear watching his later films after Casino Royale so often. Even the fairly good Skyfall is so drab and gutwrenching. I want something closer to Moore or Brosnan's vibe just as a break after Craig's exit.

I like that you stated that every Bond actor is either good, great or something in between. I quite like Lazenby as Bond. I'd actually disagree on the chemistry between him and Rigg. They even had a little bit of a tiny fling before the filming and their relationship on set seems to have been complicated, rather than adversarial as some would have you believe.
I agree that Brosnan is next. He got dealt a very bad hand in terms of the scripts. Something people always mention when it comes to him is how handsome he is. And I agree of course, but to me he was almost too stereotypically handsome. Connery looked like a predatory animal. Same with Dalton to a degree. Brosnan did not have that look. He also never got to choose a clear path as Bond. He was a mix of previous Bonds, but I'd rather have had him be his own Bond.
My overall favorite is still the man, the myth, the legend: Timmy D. He's a Bond you truly believe could and would kill you without blinking. At the same time, he's one of, if not the most romantic Bond. You get the feeling that he actually cares for his Bond girls and he feels very human, but still on edge when he needs to be. I would compare him and Craig the same way I compare Michael Keaton and Christian Bale in terms of Batman. The former shows the depth of his character in very subtle ways and leaves the viewer's imagination to fill in the blanks. Whereas Craig's Bond explores the character more in depth, but loses some of the simplicity that made Bond work in the first place. At least in a couple of his films, imo.

For me, I rank the actors in regards to their overall performances, and not so much in regards to the movies they're in, which is why, for me, the ranking is a bit different:
6: George Lazenby. He didn't quite nail the charm and suaveness of James Bond, in my opinion. He's a model, not an actor, and that showed through in every shot of OHMSS.
5: Roger Moore. He's charming, witty, fun, and a joy to watch in even the goofiest Bond movies. His failing is mostly in the parts where he needs to be more rough and serious. Not a bad bond, by any stretch, just unbalanced.
4: Timothy Dalton. The main issue here is that there are only 6 spots, and I have to put him somewhere. He did everything Craig's been doing in the most recent films, and he did it all 20 years before Craig. He's intense, gritty, and can still be charming when the time comes. A very underrated Bond, in my opinion.
3: Daniel Craig. He's a great actor, with excellent physicality, and played Bond in 2 of the greatest Bond films of all time (along with 2 duds, but that's not why he's here). My main issue is that he doesn't quite fit the mold of classic Bond. Physically, he's much stockier, and less suave. He does his own thing, and that's fine by me, even though it's less Bond and more generic action hero.
2: Pierce Brosnan. Probably a bit biased here, since Goldeneye was the first Bond movie I've seen (and it's such a good one). He was also the one who was my depiction of Bond when I was growing up in the 90s and early 00s. Despite all that, he really looks the part: tall, dark, and handsome, debonair, looks great in a tux, and has that awesome balance of charm and badassery that makes James Bond such an engaging movie hero. He could be suave when he needed to, and then switch to a cold killing machine the next second.
1: Sean Connery. Again, a bit of bias, since Brosnan was basically doing what Connery mastered 30 years previously, but you can't argue that Sean Connery IS James Bond. Everything I said about Brosnan's bond applies here, except that he gets the bonus of having done it all first.

Craig’s performance, while respectable, could be inserted into any modern generic action or spy film, but a Bond needs to be **more** (no pun intended).
Brosnan always felt a little too smooth, it always felt like he was lacking in most of the complexity of the character- there were literally only two or three moments over the course of his run, where it felt like there was more to his character- & he had *the worst* Bond girl, in Denise Richards (& ironically, one of the best, in Sophie Marceau)- but he gets dragged down by some truly absurd plots.
Lazenby was remarkably good in his single outing- but he could have also played a good Bond villain (those who’ve heard of ‘The Man from Hong Kong’ will know...)
Moore, much as I adore him, had probably most of the weakest entries- hell, I even fell asleep during one....

So is this video actually more of an abbreviated version of ranking the movies? You realise the actors don’t write or direct the movies?
Brosnan lost major points for the caliber of movies he was in? You’re not judging him on his performances?

Craig is the worst... he's like a brooding teenager at times. I get that his version is the Bond before Dr No, but I don't think an clandestine service would choose an operative candidate with that kind of fortitude.

I dont like the Craig direction that they have gone with. A darker, more grimy Bond is just like any other action movie. The witty, elegant, womanizing agent with fun gadgets, is what makes Bond special

Happy to see that the owner of quite possibly the darkest, bloodiest, most violent Bond movie of them all, License to Kill, is finally getting some “respek” put on his name!

Throughout his tenure Daniel Craig has played James Bond looking like someone who's only doing so because he lost a bet.

When Connery died, Bond died with him. There is only ONE James Bond 007!!! RIP Sir Sean Connery.......................

According to Ian Flemming (the author of the Bond books) George Lazenby was actually the guy who looked like the actuall James Bond how Flemming imagined it.

Timothy Dalton was great as Bond. It's too bad people in the 80s weren't on board seeing a more realistic take on Bond at the time. I agree with him being ranked at 3. Its still crazy though that Brosnan was suppose to play Bond in TLD

Lazenby didn`t have Connery`s charisma, he wouldn`t have been a star in any other movie other than Bond while Connery has won an oscar for the movie the untouchables, he`s just got a movie star`s face while Lazenby didn`t.

Love them all!! However, my first 007 movie was "The Spy Who Loved Me". So I'm biased on who my favorite Bond is. 😉

Without Ian Fleming, we wouldn't have James Bond's basis. Without Sean Connery, we wouldn't have the character. Without George Lazenby, we wouldn't have the acceptance of other actors. Without Roger Moore, we wouldn't have Bond's fun and playful elements. Without Timothy Dalton, we wouldn't have James Bond as the epic action hero we see him as today. Without Pierce Brosnan, we wouldn't have complex storylines and that extra level of detail in the newer films. And without Daniel Craig, we would never have understood Fleming's true James Bond. JoBlo, I really love these videos! It was only during lockdown that I watched all the James Bond movies for the first time ever (I bought myself a box set!), and as a 15 year old who had never seen the movies before, I was in love. And your videos really helped me understand more of the context and behind-the-scenes, which definitely interests me a bunch! Please, keep making these videos. I love them, and you are amazing! Much love!

All the analytics and so called Bond historians will never agree with this but Sir Roger Moore is by far the best Bond ever. Following Connery is impossible but he kept the franchise fresh and relevant for two decades and without him, the Bond franchise could have been lost somewhere in the 70s and 80s. To play humor, action and sexiness perfectly is impossible but yet Sir Roger Moore did it perfectly in all his films.

You can’t rank the Bonds (characters) by the stories. Just because the movie is a flaming piece of shit, doesn’t mean the actor was. You should be ranking them by the portrayal itself. On another note, how the hell did I not know Lazenby was dubbed in the movie as Sir Hillary?? Keep up the good work with the great videos.

Tim Dalton passed up earlier chances to commence portraying Bond, first in the late 1960s (#6 and on) and then in the early 1980s (#12 and on). Nonetheless, I would rank him either second to Thomas Sean Connery, or even a 2-way tie with him.
I do wonder if the appraisal for Pierce Brosnan would be more favourable had he immediately succeeded Roger Moore rather than Dalton; compared to Tim, Pierce seems a tongue-in-cheek lightweight, whereas compared to Roger he seems even more of an earnest cold-eyed "paid assassin".
I do concur with those who assert that George Lazenby (very last on my list as well) starred in an otherwise magnificent entry, and Tim starred in an otherwise mediocre entry.

Pierce Brosnan had the worst script of his movies, its like they were running out of ideas, that's why after DAD, they wanted to go back to the Connery era this time more realistic with Craig as Bond

    6. George Lazenby

no no, Moore is much better than Dalton. Dalton had not that typical humoristic type that Bond need to be, Moore had that so... :P
btw, I love them all and usually do a Bond-review thru them all every other year or so, just... because... it's BOND
