Why are people so mad there arent physical buttons? I bet in 5 years all vehicles will change to touch only. Remember the days when all cell phones had buttons?
When there’s no buttons, you have to spend more time not looking at the road trying to do things that should take a little time as possible to do, like changing the temperature and volume.
Here are two reasons. Harder to adjust temp, volume, heated seats & wheel, etc. on the drive. A knob or button is just way simpler to operate while driving. Also just another electronic to break on the vehicle.
@@hskrgradit is SO MUCH easier to adjust volume on the steering wheel than having to reach over to the knob on the screen. When I am in a car with steering wheel controls, I rarely use the volume knob. And frankly, the haptic slider control on some VWs is easier than the physical button, just one ‘no-look’ swipe with the thumb brings the adjustment I need.
Physical boundaries always make humans perform with more confidence. Imagine walking a narrow over pass bridge 200ft above highway or river without physical side guard rails. Even though normally we never touch the guard rails, without it, it will be very difficult to walk across with confidence. Humans are built/evolved to rely on physical material boundaries for efficient motor articulation and psychological comfort.
Thanks for the great review as always. I agree with you and your partner that this is a good looking vehicle. I sat in the same model in the dealership and played around with the touch screen. It was no big deal but imagine it could be problematic to use at speed/in traffic. I am curious for the redesigned Tiguan hybrid(?) and the Mazda cx70 phev. I cannot really justify purchasing a pure ice vehicle any longer. This vehicle really should be a hybrid with about 340 combined HP and a volume knob with proper hvac controls. Cheers!
Interesting video, I have the Atlas SEL Premium R-Line and what you forgot is that all those things you’re not satisfied with are part of the voice controls, ask Volkswagen next time. There’s a help menu, next time ask the dealership for instructions. Luv everything about MyVW.
We have a non-cross-sport 2018 Atlas 2.0T S (base trim) FWD since new. 83k miles and nothing has gone wrong since we bought it. We’ve done nothing but normal maintenance. The interior space is incredible. Third row space can’t be beat for the class imo. Although I’ll admit that the interior is a bit cheap. However we don’t plan on buying another one since they’ve gotten rid of a good number of the physical buttons. I haven’t had a good experience with family trying to use cars without buttons.
You better check how stretch is the timing chain, also check the cam bridge, for sure at this time the screen has gone. I had this problem with 96k miles.
VW went bold with this refresh. Making ventilated seats and digital driver displays standard while others make it optional or premium upgrades. You can easily get by with the SE technology trim.
You are rigth on the money I got the 18 sel panoramic sun roof, 18 in wheels all the belts and wisel exept digital cluster , phisical buttons it’s huge inside you didn’t mention you can fit 3 seats for the kids way better than most suvs and I got the vr6 way better power than that tiny 4 l and reliability better vr6 has been here for years paired with that toyota tranny 👍no issues at all 125000 miles running like new👍
😮… $53k for a Volkswagen SUV that’s not a Touareg and doesn’t have a V8 is ABSURD. That’s literally more than a Touareg with the V8 was like 15 years ago. And you could get the Touareg with a V10… outrageous these prices for the I4 and it’s not even the V6.
It never made sense to sell the Touareg here in NA, not only the import costs is high but the price tag that it has. It’s starting price around 70k euros in Germany, that’s equivalent to over 72k USD. No one’s paying that money for a VW when a Porsche Cayenne or an Audi Q7/Q8 exists and is better.

The Toureg started at 50k maxed out at 60k the last year it was in the US in 2017 and no one bought it. The Atlas and the Cross Sport outsell the Toureg by a wide margin.
The Harmon Kardon audio system in the top trim is absolutely incredible. That’s the only reason why I want the top trim. I don’t like 21” wheels. I rather 18 or 19
“Smash my finger on the button…” I’m sorry, but that’s just BS or you don’t know what you’re doing. If you need a leger adjustment than a tap or two gives you, you just press and hold the damn button - same with the haptic pad, and the adjustment will be continuous until you let up. And you don’t have to look, it’s right under your thumb!
I just got my Atlas CS a week ago. Except for the color (mine is red) it is exactly the same as what you drove. The price was the same too (I'm in San Antonio). I traded in my RX350. I had to get the Premium since I got used to all the Lexus features. (Damn you Lexus!). I am 63 yo and am getting used to all the features. YES I would have liked some buttons on the infotainment system. But you can get used to it. It feels like I am driving a huge vehicle like a Tahoe or something. I am lovin' it!
I would say the cross sport is far bigger though I would ask if you have Lexus 350 why not go to a 350h and get hybrid mpg of 40 vs 19 with atlas sport?
One big reason is the lack of a local dealer. I had battery issues last summer and had to get a tow over 100 miles away and then a tow back.@@Jack_Hunt
I just traded in my 2022 Audi Q5 for an Atlas CS SEL Premium because of the larger size. Went with the top of the line for the same reason…used to all of the bells and whistles in my Prestige trim Audi. The Atlas just came in this week and will be ready for pick up this weekend, so I haven’t had any time in it yet, but very much looking forward to it. Glad to hear that you’re enjoying yours.
I have a 2024 Atlas CS, SE trim with 4MO, here’s my take. I love the engine, sport mode gives it a bit louder/sporty note, plenty of power for merging in heavy NYC and metro area highways. The interior materials are great, improvement over my 2020 however..the unlit hvac and volume sliders is awful. How did this get approved. People with expensive degrees failed a basic task lol. The only other complaint is a lack of tactile knobs/controls. Otherwise the interior is great, heavily bolstered seats are the first seats to not make my back hurt. Lastly, I HATE black out trim packages. I know, I’m the only one. I’m so glad my model does not have any blackouts. I absolutely loathe black wheels, all design esthetics are lost, especially at night.
Just traded in my 2021 Atlas and got this, an SEL R-Line and I love it! I've been a big fan of the new engine and updated interior, I do miss the buttons but admittedly I just think it's the future so I'm buying in. I also looked at the Audi Q8s and just couldn't justify the additional $40K+, this thing has it all. My favorite upgrade from my 2021 is the heads up display - speed, speed limit, and adaptive cruise control info if you want.
Seeing your comments, I’m guessing you’re from the GCC? And yes we would take the Hilux over the Tacoma if it was available in the US. But Hyundai and Kia have recently gotten a bad name due to the Kia Boyz trend and their dealerships not honoring warranties at all, on top of unreliability. While as an American I like how the Grandeur looks (I think it’s sold in Saudi Arabia), I don’t see it coming here with the sedan market shrinking like crazy here in the US.

Us having no problems is honestly kinda crazy considering it’s a Volkswagen AND a first year model. Can’t beat the interior space for the class though, it really is very spacious on the inside, it’s almost Chevy Suburban levels of interior space (for passengers, not for cargo). You can have as much third row legroom as the second row, it’s really nice. It’s actually one of the big reasons that we didn’t get a Honda Pilot (we had one) or Highlander, the two main reliable three row SUVS. They just weren’t big enough on the inside and we use the third row a lot. We didn’t mind maybe a couple of things not being reliable when we got the car, but so far our atlas has been flawless. Again, we were pretty skeptical about it’s reliability when we bought the car yet we were proven wrong. We don’t like the 2024 atlas however due to the lack of physical buttons. Me and family haven’t had a good experience with any car without physical controls so far.
GM and Ford have been putting turbo 4s in their 5k pound half tons for a few years. It is more in the gearing rather than the motor, 8 and 10 speeds accommodate for a lot.
Agree too much chrome makes this looks cheap & very 90’s. Not necessarily a fan of all blacked out accents, but dark chrome would be more aesthetically pleasing. Your dainty sandals threw me off 😂
Germans are know for their solid build. What they don't get is reliability or fuel economy. What make this a no deal for me is those haptic buttons and fake exhausts which I can't tolerate. If you buy it just as a people carrier than the base model is fine. Such as those households with two cars. One as a daily driver/hauler/transportation appliance and one for special occasions and comfort when you want to impress. On the other hand, if you're one of the many American's or families that "live" in their cars and can only afford one, you're going want a lot more comfort and convenience features that can be had in the entry level model.
Because the Tourag isn’t available anymore in the US I bought a 2022 Cross Sport SEL V6 Premium R :Line. Long name but a satisfying SUV. It’s a good looking and as far as SUV’s go, the MPG are on par. I’ve had several V6 SUV’s and this is really the average I’m miles per gallon. It’s a great travel car, comfortable back seats for passengers and amenities. I plan to keep it for at least 150k miles.
2018 problem-free-since-new 2.0T atlas owner here. We aren’t buying another atlas for this reason alone. Will likely go for the grand highlander or Lexus TX next.
I have a leased 2022 Atlas SEL R-line with the 3.6 V6 which runs on regular gas. the change to the new 4 cylinder turbo requires premium fuel. I'll be buying my car when it comes off lease because I don't want to spend the extra $ on gas required with less horsepower.
I enjoyed your review up to the point that you drew your conclusions. Not all of us are looking for the most value oriented auto purchase. I, for one, don’t mind paying more for specific features that round out my driving experience, such as head up display, pano sunroof, premium leather seating, premium stereo, etc. Kind of weird how you use such absolutes in your recommendations.
it's just his opinion. he's not Julius ceaser lol. I personally love that new engine and have been holding out for it since they put it in the new GTI years ago. It's easily tunabe to 340 HP/ 320TQ with a $600 CARB Legal tune. The 8 speed Toyota Transmission can handle a max of 365 Torque. Those are the most important factors for me and the bang for the buck for a FWD SE since im in Cali. Also the FWD will be faster to 60 and save you more gas vs 4-motion. great deal overall
If the “first gen” you’re talking about is the Touareg then yes. It was designed in Europe iirc. The atlas was designed in America for the American market only. The rest of the word got the new Touareg which still looks European. We got a block.
Actually pretty classy looking overall. Like having your wife giving her perspective. Women play a big part in the purchase of a new vehicle. They want it to be user friendly as well both in drivability and in the looks department. We don’t need the third row, so that is a positive. All manufacturers are turning to more electronic controls as opposed to buttons and dials. Do think it is a little under powered with the 4 cylinder.

No, this is called cost cutting 🙂. You don't have to design and manufacture all those little buttons, all the backlight for each of them, etc. Now that Germany doesn't get cheap natural gas from russia for their industry, it is expected more and more cost cutting from german automakers. Just look at the Golf 8 interior...
Dude this not even made in Germany. The engine is from Mexico, the frame USA, transmission Japan loll it’s far from German. Those days are over. Also there is a big recall on 2024 for rod bearings

We’ve had our 2018 Atlas (not cross sport) 2.0T S FWD since new with 83k miles on it so far. Absolutely Problem-free, and I wouldn’t buy this new atlas just because of the lack of buttons. I’ve already had a bad experience trying to use a car without buttons and I’m trying to have to never go through that again. Lexus TX is our next consideration.

I think the chrome looks great. The whole “blacked out” trend thing is so played out. Time for it to end. This trim level looks amazing.

It’s a great kiddie mover but the new Atlas lost its 970 depreciation and 6,000 lb GVW.
Two-finger tap on the temp slider turns on the heated seats, do it again and it adjusts them.

The 2024 Atlas doesn’t require premium fuel. It may have slightly less horsepower but with more torque it’s actually quicker.

I, for one, don’t mind paying more for specific features that round out my driving experience, such as head up display, pano sunroof, premium leather seating, premium stereo, etc. Kind of weird how you use such absolutes in your recommendations.
it's just his opinion. he's not Julius ceaser lol. I personally love that new engine and have been holding out for it since they put it in the new GTI years ago. It's easily tunabe to 340 HP/ 320TQ with a $600 CARB Legal tune. The 8 speed Toyota Transmission can handle a max of 365 Torque. Those are the most important factors for me and the bang for the buck for a FWD SE since im in Cali. Also the FWD will be faster to 60 and save you more gas vs 4-motion. great deal overall
I find that when seen from the rear it reminds me of the Dodge Magnum. the low, wide rear window on both vehicles.

If the “first gen” you’re talking about is the Touareg then yes. It was designed in Europe iirc. The atlas was designed in America for the American market only. The rest of the word got the new Touareg which still looks European. We got a block.

Actually pretty classy looking overall. Like having your wife giving her perspective. Women play a big part in the purchase of a new vehicle. They want it to be user friendly as well both in drivability and in the looks department. We don’t need the third row, so that is a positive. All manufacturers are turning to more electronic controls as opposed to buttons and dials. Do think it is a little under powered with the 4 cylinder.

No, this is called cost cutting 🙂. You don't have to design and manufacture all those little buttons, all the backlight for each of them, etc.
Now that Germany doesn't get cheap natural gas from russia for their industry, it is expected more and more cost cutting from german automakers. Just look at the Golf 8 interior...
Dude this not even made in Germany. The engine is from Mexico, the frame USA, transmission Japan loll it’s far from German. Those days are over. Also there is a big recall on 2024 for rod bearings

From my experience, it’s much quieter. The Highlander is noisy and clunky, at least the comparable Grand Highlander is.

There is NOT a big recall. There were only around 1800 recalled and any manufactured after May are fine. Kia/Hyundai 3.3 MILLION is a big recall.....
All cars have recalls. Deal with it.
The car looks great but if you need to go on a hilley drive a four. Cylinder will not do you might get overheated I don't know why Volkswagen built a SUV with a four cylinder

We’ve had our 2018 Atlas (not cross sport) 2.0T S FWD since new with 83k miles on it so far. Absolutely Problem-free, and I wouldn’t buy this new atlas just because of the lack of buttons. I’ve already had a bad experience trying to use a car without buttons and I’m trying to have to never go through that again.
Lexus TX is our next consideration.
