- FIRST DRIVE: The Cross Sport continues in VW's lineup for 2024, but has some big changes. On the outside you will notice the updated look, especially the 21in wheels. On the inside the Cross Sport get a unique interior, floating iPad style infotainment screen and interior lighting with 30 colors. Under the hood is a major change now with a 2.0L inline-4 turbocharged engine paired with an 8-speed and AWD. Is the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport a new luxury SUV worth the price?

Just purchased one over the weekend and I’m in love. Coming from a Q7,I’m amazed at. All the features it has for $50k. Plan on paying this one off vs a trade in. The warranty I have is phenomenal
I think Joe would be in heaven if a manufacturer used dark chrome and tucked the rear wiper up under the air deflector.

I just bought this as my daily and its been great so far. The Lane Keeping and ACC are on par with my Mercedes if not slightly better. I was fully expecting to use this car for a couple years trash it and move on to another one but the premium feel of this vehicle has me taking care of it a bit more than I expected. I've never spent so little on a vehicle and gotten so much. Couldn't recommend this car more --- reliability is TBD but I have a solid warranty and a loaner car guarantee from my dealer so if it does have issues I shouldnt be out a car.
It’s been 6 months any updates on reliability, I’m interested in getting one !

I actually own a 2024 cross sport and the engine is quite nice to drive... lots of low end torque, good shifting. Really enjoying the car!

@@nellynel153 took it to a road trip and averaged 26 mpg going 70mph on average plus city driving! This car is so nice, wish I had the SEL with ambient lighting :p

I’m obsessed with the design of the Cross Sport! They already make me do a double take on the road and the exterior upgrades for 2024 are even better. Love the illuminated VW logo on the front and back and the light bar. Touches like those make the vehicle feel elevated. I’m also really digging the interior re-design, especially the leather seat design! A couple things I wish it had would be temperature control and ventilated seats in the rear. I’ve never owned a VW and with half of VW owners loving them and half hating them, I am so torn. I love the vehicle through and through, but it would suck for it to spend a lot of time in the shop. I’m gonna be looking to purchase sometime in December so I’ve got some time to see how the 2024s do. I have a glimmer of hope that they worked on producing a better and more reliable product with the refresh. Thanks for your content, Joe! I always love to hear your take in your reviews.

I just bought a 24 r line all black SeL. I had an VW back in 2018 and never had any issues. They have a standard 5-75 warranty bumper to bumper. The car is nice to drive
Passat with 90k miles no issues. If there was the engines are easy to work on
I’ve never been a fan of this vehicle. However, I recently saw one on the road (not very common I think here in NYC), and I agree with being obsessed with the exterior design in person. I actually asked my friend who was driving to follow it so I can take a closer look 😂. Ofc he didn’t do it (in his words, “I ain’t doin that, dickhead). Needless to say, exterior is pretty 🔥.

Atlas is not on the same platform as the Q8. Atlas is on MQB platform which is for its vehicles with transversely mounted engines such as Golf, Passat, Q3, Jetta and etc. Q8 is on MLB platform which is for its vehicles with longitudinally mounted engines such as A4-A8, Q5-Q8. MLB platform is also found on Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne. Atlas more of a lifted up Golf than Q8.
Now, this is my favorite.
2024 Cross Sport has EA888 Gen 4 engine and Continental turbo , the same engine and turbocharger found in Mk8 GOLF R, and 2023 Arteon. It is highly detuned from 315 hp for marketing/product positioning and economy purposes. This engine is capable of 400 hp and 400 fplbf all day long with just downpipe, tune and an intercooler.
You must have read my mind. I was thinking if I got one, I will have to tune it. I don't need a full on drag racer, but 7 seconds to 60? I need to be able to pass you while on 610. lol
If I tune it does it effect the warranty ?

Great review Joe! Been waiting for this one. I can't imagine how beautiful the interior looks at night with the ambient lighting. Finally, a vehicle that you pay 50K +/- for and it looks like you're driving 75K. Especially the interior.
Just bought one (SEL R-Line) and the lights across the dash and door panels are pretty cool...

Love the idea of the third row getting cut out for a sport version. More cars should do that. However, leaves a lot to be desired with all the gloss black, fake vents and exhaust, etc. also the screen looks a little off centered on the display but could just be the angle
Piano black trims and accents in cars are horrendous! They get scratched by just breathing close to them. It feels like you’re taking care of a 6 month old baby and have to be very careful when cleaning.

Own a 22 CS with the v6 and love it with zero issues thus far. Really want the 24 refresh but the engine is the deal breaker. All these manufacturers stuffing turbo 4’s in these heavy vehicles are begging for trouble. Asking way too much out of these motors and the performance is terrible

Exactly! And that's why I'll keep my 2022. Would never change my V6 for this small, turbo lag plagued engines

I drove both the 23 and 24 before deciding on the 24. The 4 cylinder has better torque and HP and felt faster than the V6. Although I despise the market going to a 4 cylinder model for all their IC vehicles... in this spec and model it works ... if you want the V6 you'll have to go with the Q8
The performance of this new 2.0 liter turbo is actually better than the normally aspirated VR6 but I agree with you, getting this much power out of 2 liters doesn't seem like a good idea for longevity. Most customers only own these for three years on a lease so they aren't concerned about the long term reliability. I have the VR6 in my 2018 Passat GT. What a sweet engine in a lighter vehicle!

I did as well. 24 SeL R line black on black. Grey/black interior .. love the drive on it. Smooth ride and quiet.. little weird not having any buttons lol. AC works great, comfortable seats, love how it looks at night inside and out.. the black on black combo is special.

I have my im picking up friday afternoon fully loaded kingfisher blue metallic i can’t wait im lucky only one available 4 is already sold,and then if you don’t have available sucks you have to wait for four months.
The artificial sound of the sports mode can be turned off. Go to Custom mode and set every feature to sport except the sound. I picked up the very same VW Cross Sport that Joe tested in this video. So far, I love it. Thanks, Joe, for the entertaining and informative reviews. I'll get a picture of a large pizza folded around a liter of Coke stuffed in the front door pocket.

I'm leasing a 2024 Atlas SE with Technology at $405/month for 36-months. It's the new, "cheap", daily driver for me. I upgraded from a Tiguan so I'm pretty happy with it.

Don’t get the id4 yet , the atlas is the way to go. But the id4 in the next few years is going to be able to do 300 legit miles on the battery

Love the color and the way they light up the VW badging, but don't like the pumped in fake engine sounds.
Almost every automaker does it.
I've seen recent M - B sedans with center logo glow and it looks very cool
I want and purchased the 2021 ID.4 😢traded it back in to Volkswagen for a 2021 Atlas Cross Sport with in 6 months.
I see this vehicle as the best of both worlds. Maybe in 2026 I’ll go check the cross sport out

The longevity of these turbo lawn mower engines will be up for debate. A roughly 120 cubic inch engine is not enough for this type of heft. I drove a 23 Atlas. It had no guts whatsoever, especially trying to pass on the highway. I don't see this being much better if at all.
The 4 cylinder in sport mode is adequate - I can pass easily on the highway with no issues. If you want a bigger engine spring for the Q8.

I don't like the fake engine noise either. However
I prefer the fake vents as they don't throw DI. soot all over your bumper and blacken the pipes. My 21 Arteon has the real deal exhaust but unlike most I understand why manufacturers went with fake vents

I had the 2023 VW Atlas and never like it provided the type of luxury for a 50k+ vehicle. I traded it for a Pathfinder and I'm glad I did.
Love the way the Cross Sport looks. However, VW's reliability reputation makes this a difficult buy recommendation.

I find tge Cross Port more visually pleasing over the standard Atlas, but I'm going to have to Zonk the new engine. Good space for Canoli, how about some ZEPPOLE 😋
the Gen 4 EA888 is great engine, and can easily produce 380 crank HP with the proper tuning. If you want more power than you need to upgrade to an Audi.

Joe, you always point out the good and not so good points of the vehicles in your very informative reviews. In regards to the pumped in engine sound in the individual mode can you select pure engine sound like in the Golf R? From what I understand this eliminates the pumped in engine sound. I always find a way to delete the fake engine noise. You can code it out in the aftermarket on most newer cars, thankfully.
Or just turn it “off”
@@JGisMe2013 coding it out with OBD11 or Vag-Com turns the module off for good, not every time you start the vehicle.
How do you turn it off? I had a Mercedes and we traded it in in the 2024 Atlas Sport R series LSE… so far I like it! It has lots of upgrades as the luxury cars. We feel like we stole the car. Our insurance is much cheaper! Plus Regular gas no more premium. I wanted a hybrid. But they had this on lot. Happy so far. Had it 2 months. No complaints! Great and accurate review for sure!!!
Joe, when I looked at the vehicle I noticed you will pay more on gas for the 4 cylinder vice the 6 cylinder. The 4 cylinder requires premium unleaded vice regular unleaded.

Plastic trim is for Off Road cars. All the designers know what to do to make the car looks bigger, larger, taller and etc. Is there because it’s a cross car, so expect to have it. Cross Up, Cross Fox from VW had/has (some they don’t make anymore), and many of others cars like Toyota Corolla Cross, Fiat Fastback etc have. The designers and engineers do this for a reason. Sometimes the plastic trim is round meaning it’s for roads as highways, and when it’s more square shape is for tough roads like most of the trucks have. Understanding why is there, tell you a lot about the car you want to drive and needs. Where they make it to be driven to. You don’t want to have a city car like VW Polo to drive in a gravel tough road. You will be fine with the cross type cars. So after you understand that, you will be fine with that plastic trim being there.

Get 2023 with VR6. Skip the I4 turbo.

I just test-drove one today! the. the digital speedometer is so small! I feel like that's lacking for this price.. as well as the look of the leather on the seats. It looks cheap, But, I still want it. I had my dealer get me the pure grey.
ZONK all rear cup holders, it's 2023 why do they continue making those tiny shallow cup holders? Don't they realize 40 oz cups are standard these days? It's very frustrating spending that much money and they haven't updated the design to the rear cup / arm rest. Also VW should bring the audi adjusting / extending armrest from the Audi. We love the adjustable front armrest in our Q5. Also agree every R-Line should be blacked out and not chrome! It's the little things that are pet peeves. Keep up the great content!!

This vehicle was so nice to look at that I didn’t even notice Joe’s calves where in some of the shots. From certain angles the exterior looks fantastic & from other angles it looks bloated & heavy (especially after knowing the mpg). I loathe chrome accents on vehicles, but it’s minimal enough where I don’t mind it. Lack of fog lights is disappointing. The interior is where this vehicle stands out & shines, it’s gorgeous. Glad to see that VW stepped up the interior design & materials like they use to be known for & didn’t make it look cheap. I would be interested in buying this if it had better mpg or a hybrid version was available.

Stock fog lights on every car/truck I've ever owned have been inadequate as true fog lights. Mostly a cosmetic accent light that slightly illuminates the curb and center line.
If your close to Lake Placid, that is a nice area to visit.

The exterior design is kind of goofy and isn’t as crisp as Volkswagen used to be back in the 2000s. But the interior is a vast improvement that I’ll take any day

Is there a way to review/ compare a few 2024 midsize GAS suv's? I'm NOT buying a hybrid nor ev yet. The infrastructure, build, recycle in just not sold on them yet. But need a new midsize suv. Sporty, power awd. Not big, not small.... thanks!

Correction, The Atlas sits on a completely different chassis than the Audi Q8. The Audi is on the MLB(evo) and the Atlas is on the MQB platform. (Min 1:40)
It would be good to add a correction on the video. The MQB is macpherson strut and transverse mounted engine. The MLB is longitudinal, mounted engine, and double wishbone.

Q8 is MBL EVO and not the same as Atlas, which is MQB
If you put 3.0 TDI in it I will buy . I has a 2016 touareg tdi . The touque isn’t crazy . I remember I was following a explorer st , I followed he 200 km all the way , explorer driver must be thinking what’s going on with that vw
The Q8 is rear wheel drive while cross sport is front wheel drive. Cross sport has the same chassis as golf
Gas mileage still leaves a lot to be desired on this, compared to others, despite the new powertrain.
can't believe they didn't improve fuel economy. 19-25 mpg just isn't good enough for 2023. Should've put a hybrid in the motor. Such a shame. Here's hoping the 2025 Tiguan brings a plug in hybrid.
