Thank you for explaining this. I’ve had my Rinnai RUR98i for the last six years. My dedicated return line never work that great I thought it was something just wrong with it. My installing plumber did not put in a spring-loaded (he used a swing) check valve, nor a drain valve. So I’ve been getting code 63 on and off for the past year and I realized with your video I can't bleed the air from the return line. Thank you for explaining this to me. At least now I can talk to Rinnai guys with some level of intelligence. These plumbers in California just don’t know what’s going with these Rinnai systems or how to install them properly. Why don't they just explain from Rinnai so we laypeople can hold these plumbers accountable, it's really not rocket science.

when recirculating pump is running, how does the cold intake know to pull from the dedicated recirc in and not the incoming cold water, or a mix of the two? (Will the hot water have higher pressure because of its temp?)

I had a plumber come in and put in a dedicated return line from my kitchen faucet to the tankless. So the hot line goes from the tankless to the faucet. There's a loop maybe 20 feet from the tankless with a check valve in it and the arrow points to the tankless. The loop goes back to the tankless and into the cold water. There's a check valve about a foot from where the loop enters the cold water to prevent it from going back up that pipe. The loop goes into the tankless cold water inlet. The problem is that sometimes the water will just be lukewarm. I can touch the hot pipe coming from the tankless and it's hot. But it's like it keeps recirculating cold water into the pipe or something and never stopping. I'm pretty sure the tankless setting is 4B. I don't know if setting 5 is set to comfort or economy. The plumber who initially installed the tankless said it's a cold water sandwich. He is not the plumber who installed the loop. What's causing this issue?

I have a remote bathroom that is branched off of the main loop (it has no return line) and located about 20 feet away from the loop. Can you use both the return line from the loop and the thermal bypass valve in the remote bathroom at the same time?

Hi Mike, thanks for the great video. I just had a RUR 199in installed and planned to use the bypass valve, but I did not have the bypass filter installed. I want to do it now, is it safe to remove the bypass plug and install the filter? Do I need to drain the heater first? or just power off is enough, I am not sure if hot water will come through where the bypass plug is if I unplug it. Thank you
yes you will have to drain down the tankless. When you done installing the filter you will have to bleed the system. make sure you follow the correct parameter settings on page 50 of the instruction manual. mike
Hi Mike, I have had two firms quote me Rinnai RU199IN. I do not have a dedicated return line.One quoted the RU unit and will not install an RUR stating they are problem units.The other was pushing the RUR stating it will provide instant hot water and will not waste water. He also said that the cold water would not be affected. The amazon ratings on the RU seemed much better than the RUR.Which will produce hot water with the least problems and is the best choice for me. I would appreciate a rapid response since I must make a quick decision.Thank you for your help. -- Murray Bob

Hi Mike I have a RUC98i just installed. The hot water works great and no issues but the circ system won’t continue to run. Piping is exactly like you show in the video. I have it on a timer and when it turns on, the pump will start and in little red light will display , but after a couple of minutes it will hot heat anymore Using a grunfoss 1/2” bronze circular, any thoughts? What’s a good gym for the pump? How long can I have the circ pump ( I know 24 hours is not good ) also does the circ work better at 120 rather than 130? Thanks in advance. Kerry

thanks for the video, since 3/4 inch pex. fittings are 4-5mm smaller in I.D. than copper or cpvc, do u know from your experience if using copper or cpvc for supply lines is better for max. flow even if the water pressure for the install is up to spec.
I think that just screwed up! I installed a Rinnai RX199IN Sensi :RX 11gpm for a small 3 bd/2ba house near Chicago. Totally replumbed the 75 year old house with a return line. I ordered the unit thinking that it had a built in recirc. pump. It is not an RUR unit. Do you have a video about installing a recirc pump?
We recently had a Navien NPE-210S2 installed to replace a tank system with had a recirculating line in order to reach the far master bath on the opposite end of the house. I've been thru three plumbers that all gave up on trying to understand the connection points on both ends of the recirculating lines. Could you please tell me where each end of the recirculating line should be connected to. I'm at my witts end and out $3500 do far with not consistent hot water to the far end of the house. Please help
One end the farthest is connected to the hot water pipe somewhere behind a faucet. The other end near the tankless gets connected to the recirculating pipe on the Navien.
Hello Mike, I run in your video looking for help un the dip switch settings in a Rinnai RB 30/36 sanitary+heating gas unit. I connected a remote ambient thermostat to both of my Rinnai units, but I only selected one of them thru the heating button. My problem is that when the remote thermostat activates, both boilers start running in heating, regardless that only one of them had the heating option turned on. My plan B is to install two lamp-type switches on each remote signal but I want to avoid going so basic and messy on the installation. Thank you in advance.
I’m new to your Channel . I just installed a unit . For a couple of weeks it worked fine . But now it come on for a bit then shut itself down then it kick back on . Still trying to figure the flow rate in the setting. I don’t know if that the problem or something else . The bathroom is the back of the house if you turn the water on in the shower it only gets so hot but if you turn the sink on in the same bathroom it kick up to hot 120 . So I don’t know if I need a flow rate setting set right or a bypass . Any help will be appreciate it . Ps this is only a One bathroom . home .

How does this affect your cold water pressure and am I understanding you correctly when you say the unit senses the the back pressure and shuts off the pump?

I have the RSC199e, and it doesn’t have the “plug” on the hot water line (in the out put area near the valve). I have it setup for recirculation with the crossover (thermal bypass) valve. It seems to be working correctly. Should I be looking for the “plug” internally?

MIke, Can you have two thermal bypass vaves? Say your system sends hot water in both directions down the house... I'd think once one reaches temp and closes, the flow might slow down a bit in the re-circ system, and the other would keep open till it hits temp as well.. Or am I completely wrong.

My question is - do i still need to use the recommended by you 2psi regulator ??. They mention about 1/4 psi gar pressure . i just worry is this is enough for RSC199in. thanks

You should check out Navien! They are far superior units in my opinion. I actually came across your video bc I have a customer wanting rannai over my recommendation. (Customers are more familiar with rannai and they stick to what they know) You can also get a decent deal if you have a good distributor vs the rannai is pretty steep.

Aren't you creating a closed loop system with the dedicated recirculation line? In practice, I think you need to add an expansion tank. Otherwise, the expanding hot water is going to cause over pressure.
Would this thermal bypass valve work with the older r85 units? or would you have to add a circulator to the mix? (No dedicated line involved) PS Friggin' great set up yo got!

Hello Mike, I’ve watched a lot of your videos trying to find an answer to a question. I’ve got an RUR199en - I have a dedicated return line coming back to the cold. It looks like it’s been plumbed correctly, 2 spring check valves, etc. I have the wireless controller with the app on my phone. The unit works properly when a hot water tap is turned on. The problem is, it’s just not recirculating by itself. The pump just doesn’t kick on. I’ve checked the setting codes per the manual (hold A button, select settings for dedicated line) I hit the recirculate button on my app, it says it’s recirculating, but nothing happens at the unit. Any tips for how to test the pump is working? Thank you!
It could be a bad controller, I really don’t like them unless you are connecting the push button to it. I use the MC195 controller on all my installs Mike

No a RUR can not be used on a water system like that.

If you have a regulator on the water service, it would be considered a closed system. Is the inlet check valve necessary on the cold water.

How do you add a recirculating pump to a basic Rinnai V751 tankless water heater with no pump or return pipes?

Yes you can the model number for the mother board is on the paper located on the inside front cover of the unit.

Will the pressure go up when the thermal bypass valve closes?
It should stay the same if you have a pressure drop you need to check the by pass valve for debris

Why is it important to have a spring-loaded check? As opposed to a clapper check. I'm experiencing noise with the check valve in my unit.

You will have to install ball valves or balancing valves to slow down the shorter loop for the big loop to catch up.

My question is - do i still need to use the recommended by you 2psi regulator ??. They mention about 1/4 psi gar pressure . i just worry is this is enough for RSC199in. thanks
It depends on how far the meter is from the unit and what pipe size you have.
Hello! Will a recirculation pump work on my Rinnai RU199IN tankless hot water heater? I don’t believe it has a built in pump and I also do not have a dedicated return line so would need the thermal bypass. Would a Watts pump from Home Depot work?

No there is nothing on that model just turn it on and after you bleed out all your hot water faucets plug it in and it will work. Mike
You should check out Navien! They are far superior units in my opinion. I actually came across your video bc I have a customer wanting rannai over my recommendation. (Customers are more familiar with rannai and they stick to what they know) You can also get a decent deal if you have a good distributor vs the rannai is pretty steep.

Aren't you creating a closed loop system with the dedicated recirculation line? In practice, I think you need to add an expansion tank. Otherwise, the expanding hot water is going to cause over pressure.

Hello Mike, I’ve watched a lot of your videos trying to find an answer to a question.
I’ve got an RUR199en - I have a dedicated return line coming back to the cold. It looks like it’s been plumbed correctly, 2 spring check valves, etc. I have the wireless controller with the app on my phone.
The unit works properly when a hot water tap is turned on. The problem is, it’s just not recirculating by itself. The pump just doesn’t kick on. I’ve checked the setting codes per the manual (hold A button, select settings for dedicated line) I hit the recirculate button on my app, it says it’s recirculating, but nothing happens at the unit.
Any tips for how to test the pump is working? Thank you!
It could be a bad controller, I really don’t like them unless you are connecting the push button to it. I use the MC195 controller on all my installs

No you can’t the bypass valve will only work on a RUR Unit
