  • Video shows tear down of Chevrolet Malibu rear parking brake caliper leaking from parking brake shaft seal. Turns out there is no point in trying to rebuild the rears since you will need a new shaft too. Also, a neat trick or special tool will be needed to install the snap ring with that much spring force behind it. Just get new or remans.

I did buy a new seal and piston kit for these. I resued everything but the rubber and cleaned up that inner seal with a dremel. Reffered to your video to make sure the plates on the back were assembled correctly. I had a friend sandblast the caliper housing and brakets. I then painted with chassis saver paint and topcoat with chevy yellow engine enamel.
All new mounting bolts, seal kits for all four calipers was just over 100 dollars from rock auto. With the paint, 150 dollars and some nitpickey work I have four fresh calipers painted. Like new for a fraction.
    Great video thank you

Great video! Very thorough and informative. Just this weekend, I partially disassembled my caliper that was corroding around the E-brake shaft; it was not leaking though. The E-brake was not working because the shaft was frozen in the caliper. The caliper was an AC Delco remanufactured part and only a year old. Because it was so new, I was irritated it froze already. I managed to get it freed up, but I'm not sure how long it will last before corrosion gets worse. Fingers crossed!

Awesome comment. Save me a headache. I like working on "my"cars, but if something is not worth it, it is good to know also, being that I live at an apartment complex where time is limited and i have a total knee replacement. Again Thank you for the heads-up.
