- Your brake calipers are constantly exposed to the elements, letting the seals and pistons get coated with all sorts of unwanted grime. Eventually, these components will need to be replaced to ensure safe and reliable brake function. In this video, Mike Usrey shows you the step by step process to rebuild your Miata Rear calipers using our quality rebuild kits from FrenKit.

From one who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, your ability to work and narrate simultaneously is amazing. Very informative video. Thank you! Your numerous tricks, techniques, and cautions should transform this process from problem filled into a routine rebuild. Once again THANK YOU!
Thanks for the compliments! Hopefully the video helps someone through the process :)
I think this is your best ¨how to video¨ yet. Thanks!
Thank you!
You're a natural instructor. Don't need a rebuild at the moment, but I'll certainly save this video for a later time. Thanks.
Thanks so much!
This is absolutely the instructional video I'm looking for to rebuild the rear brake caliper of my Mazda 5 Premacy. Thank you for the great instructional video. Cheers from Japan.
Well done 😂 the rear brakes a weak point on my miata specially right side. I watched a few repair videos for miata your video siuts me good. The camera work is 👍. I put in refurbished calipers and now i rebuild the old ones. There are two mechanics on UA-cam i learnd a lot from, john twist from university motors and the trailor fitter fom the landrover toolbox. 37 minutes are ok to start a saturday morning 😅 thank you.
Glad it helped!
Thank You! A brilliant breakdown of not just the rebuild, but for me identified several issues i didn't pick up when simply replacing the pads and disks... Re-build now due! Also well paced video, not a 10 minute rush through but also not so long as to put me off watching! Now subscribed! And really liked the only product placement noticable was for an Eci Friendly cleaning spray 🙂
Glad it was helpful! The cleaning spray wasn't a product placement, that's the stuff we actually use :)
LOOKED AT LOADS OF THESE - THIS ONE IS THE BEST.
Thanks, hope it helped!
Great video Mike! I rebuilt my calipers a while back then topped it off with steel braided lines. Brakes were better than new and felt amazingly precise under foot! Keep up the great content!
Right on! :)
It is as if you guys read my mind 😅 About to do it this weekend after painting the calipers, thanks for the detailed guide!
Glad we can help! :D
Have old 626 4tg gen and looks like it have exact the same model.
I bought brand new disks and pads and after this video i definitely will buy a new kit's cos i noticed like the piston did not turn all the way back when release the brake. Very likely the prev owner is changed the pads only and i can feel how the sistem strug's tho open back, i can even hear how pads touching the disks till first several shocks on the road.
So, that is the only video i need.
You are an amazing instructor with nice talk slow and clear, step by step.
Thank you very much! You got a new sub!
This video will help me alot in the next few days

Excellent guide!
Thank you! Hope it helped!
Just what i needed 👨🏻🔧
Glad we could help!
Thank You! Outstanding!!!
Thanks! Hope it helps!
From one mechanic to another greatly appreciated now if you need info on VW or really old brake mastercylinders feel free to ask
Thank you!
Believe it or not, there are a few VW Vanagons in the FM family. Granted, they have been upgraded to Wilwood brakes by now because the owners like to think they drive race(?) vans.
Outstanding!
Thank you!
Great detailed video, thanks,- we're just doing my sons' Honda CRZs rears at the moment. The piston was seized on the left side , but managed to free it with some big waterpump pliers and unscrew it. Not sure if the adjuster is working properly, as it's pretty tight, so might need looking at. Always good to know where all the parts go before you pull something apart (orientation etc).
Hope we could help!
Great video thanks
Hope it helped!
شكرا على معلومات الحلوه مفيده وصحيحه وتحياتي لك
Superb👌
Thanks!
Top Class
Thanks for watching!
Great instructions, Mike. I have the rebuild kits, just need to find time to do the work. What do you recommend for paint?
Thanks, hopefully they help! For paint you'll definitely want something that is rated for very high-heat. There are also several brands that offer brake caliper specific paints that are made to resist brake dust and heat.
Great video! Is there a replacement part for the ebrake spring or that rod that rotates from the spring? It was seized up on mine when I changed the caliper. Thanks!
We don't sell those specific parts, but it looks like you can get those from your favorite Mazda dealership. Here's a link we found (not affiliated or recommending this dealership in any way, but it should at least give you part numbers)

@FlyinMiataVideo Great job! - Now if I can find a video like this for my 2017 CX-5. Seems like it would be similar, but a few differences. If anyone has any pointers.
Thanks!
Unfortunately, we don't have any advice for you there - we only work on Miatas/MX-5s, so we don't know what the CX-5 calipers are like. This particular video covers the earlier Miatas, so your calipers may be quite different.
Do you have a video for the rebuild of an NC rear caliper? Mine are on the bench and look a bit more complicated than the NB. Thanks.
At the moment, we don't; sorry! We'll add that to our internal list of video topics.
That ebrake actuation lever doesn't come out with just removing the spring does it? My lever is sticking, but i'm not trying to go out and rebuild the whole caliper at the moment. That'll be a spring job or winter when i store the car for the salty season.
The parking brake lever is held in place by the threaded rod under the piston, so it can't be removed until you've disassembled everything else.
Check to see if the sheathes of your cables have any damage - that can allow debris to get inside and bind up the metal cable. You can also disconnect the cable from the caliper and actuate the parking brake arm on the caliper with pliers to see if it's the caliper or the cable that is sticking.
How does the spline drive grab the screw? Mine has chewed the splines up so wondering what else it may have damaged in the caliper
It might be easier for us to see what you're dealing with here if you can take a couple of pictures and email them to our Support team at Support@flyinmiata.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
Does that manual threaded rod have anything to do with the parking brake?
On my left rear when calling the E brake, the cable moves the parking brake on the caliper, but does not engage, and when I press the brakes that caliper does engage so I want to know if that is an adjustment for it or I need a new caliper
Give our customer support team a call directly. They'll be more than happy to help diagnose and help if they can.
Do you have a video for a ‘19 cx5 rear caliper rebuild?
We don't - sorry! All of our content is purely Miata focused.
.....GOOD VIDEO....WHEN I CLEAN THESE I USE A WIRER BRUSH TO GET THE TARNISH OFF.OR SAND BLAST CASTING ..NICE INSTRUCTIONS...
Thanks for watching!
18:35 Unfortunately I don't feel any movement, I think it's because the part that looks like a pill is already grinded and therefore shorter. Mine is 2,3 cm. Do you know how long the original part is supposed to be?
We might not have an exact answer, but please reach out to our Customer Support team via email, and we'll try our best to help (support@flyinmiata.com).
On sport brakes anyway, you will have to reuse your factory bleeder screws. The replacements in the Fren kits are the wrong thread pitch on both front & rear kits! Also no replacement copper washers are included in the kit for the parking brake adj. plug bolts or the banjo bolts.
The bleeder screws was a known issue, and that should be fixed on all current kits. If you bought the kit from us, reach out to our customer support team so we can send you the proper bleeder screws that come with the current kit. The copper washers can be reused and don't have to be replaced, They are only helping to keep out dust, not sealing in brake fluid.
@@FlyinMiataVideo I did and will contact your support team.
The seal around the piston kept slipping out. I kept pushing it more and more until it tore.
Sorry to hear you had some issues, please reach out to our customer support team directly if there is anything we can help with!
When I disassembled my calipers, there was a push-on retainer/washer.
Naturally, one of them jumped off the workbench and disappeared.
I don't see you using them at all. Are they not needed?
I should clarify, the retainer was on the shaft that the spring mounts over.
It would probably be easiest for us to help if you could send us an email with some pictures of the retainer/washer you're referencing, or you can call in to our Support line at 970-464-5600. We look forward to hearing from you!
So they can only be rebuilt if you can get the adjusters to turn?
You have to be able to fully disassemble the brake caliper to rebuild it and make sure it functions properly. If you are doing a rebuild anyway, try soaking it in penetrant 24 hours before trying to disassemble. If you get stuck or need more help, reach out to our customer support team directly, they'll be happy to offer any advice they can. :)
@@FlyinMiataVideo my issue was last time I replaced rear brakes the adjuster wouldn't move the piston. I had to crack the line to get the caliper retracted enough to slide over 1 new pad and the better of the old 2. Does the kit come with a new adjuster, and is it possible to use air pressure to get the piston out and worry about the adjuster and threaded rod after the piston is out?
@@kylelambert1672 Unfortunately the kit does not come with a new adjuster and since the adjuster threads into the back of the piston in the rear calipers, air pressure isn't going to work unless you are able to un-thread the adjuster first. Give our customer support team a call or email if you can, they might have some troubleshooting solutions or better answer your questions there.
why its so hard to mention target generation NA/NB/NC & ND in title?
or its on purpose, just to get more clicks
Some videos can apply to all generations, even if the specific sample in the video is only one. There are definitely minor differences, but the basics of rebuilding a factory Miata caliper are going to apply to all Miatas.
thanks for clarifying
This caliper is from an NA/NB I believe. I have just dismantled an NC caliper and found it to differ from what's is the video. It has 2 larger circlips (in the piston and cylinder bore), and both have springs under them to compress.
I've abandoned trying to refit the one in the bore.
