THAT, and the fact that Mark's appearance in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (ahem, Cock Knocker) is SW canon, haha. Can't get enough of Kevin's unfiltered love of all things Star Wars.
@d d hey superior intellect guy, this video (review) is one hour and 30 minutes. Clerks, the first one is one hour and 45 minutes. Both are over the hour you referenced earlier. Smart ass.
It seems to me like there are a lot of fans that do not understand how she was able to get back aboard the ship. Force Pushing herself towards the door is a valid option, also Force Pulling the ship was another option. In Rebels season 2 the Seventh Sister was able to use Force Pull to hold the Phantom1 in place by herself while it was maintaining full thrusters, and only lost the tug of war because she got greedy and tried to close the bay doors at the same time. Considering this was a moment of desperation to live her not knowing what she was doing enough to pull or push herself to the hatch is not as insane as most of you fans think it is.
LMAO FUCK YEAH! I was talking about the Force Awakens with my uncle (super star wars fan) and he was like after the 6th watching I started to like it....This series has quickly gone down the shitter.
you can be an "actual fan" and not enjoy something lol, its like saying i enjoy burgers but if your favorite fast food joint gets bought out by a big corporation and they change the recipe to their brand of shit doesn't mean you aren't a burger fan anymore if you dont like the way they make it??? i paid the money and watched it, and i'll watch the next one, whether i enjoy it or not doesnt matter - the fact i watch them makes me a fan, but im just saying the prequels were more favorable to me than this
George Lucas repeatedly called them "laser swords" in various interviews and behind the scenes videos in the past. It was a nod to him, as well as the Anakin line. I don't people should get so bent out of shape over that
"R2 is kinda Luke's heart" ugh, I lost it there. Being a fanboy like you for 26 years, I too was bawling with you during that R2 part. This 90min video was such a perfect overview. Thank you for posting!
renison47 That got me here, as well as in the theater. I shed tears both times. Such an awesome scene, and there’s no one better to describe it than Kevin.
Just think about this: Luke Skywalker turned the tide of the entire war without firing a single shot, or harming a single soul. Now that was fucking epic. “Wars don’t make one great.”
Nunya Bidness o you don’t get it, you are looking for hard numbers and if thens... he has a good reason to be distraught and by keeping those leaders alive he stopped the resistance from being sniffed out. YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THE MOVIE
Maybe the war wouldn't have happened in the first place if he hadn't gone off in a sulk, leaving Snoke and Kylo Ren to blow up 5 planets with billions on them. Let alone his best friend died, and the Empire Mark 2 (how the hell did they get so big anyway?!) manage to wipe out the Resistance except for about 20 people?! Yeah, great job, thanks Luke. Don't let the door hit you on the way put. You didn't even try to fight and take down Kylo Ren. Fabulous. Good job.
Nunya Bidness he did change the Todd of the war by keeping everyone alive, YOU FUCKING MORON. Once again, all I can say is you don’t understand words. I never said you used the word distraught, I was describing Luke, and defending him having a reason plot wise to feel that way.
Brett Hickmann I left the theater very "meh." I didn't hate it, some parts I liked. I have to watch a movie like this several times, but I could've done without the whole "Poe is just a hothead and if we would've told him the plan we could've cut out half the movie and focused on the interesting parts." There was zero reason why everyone wasn't just told the plan from the beginning. Should've been more Rey training instead of she's just a super badass after Luke gave her like 1.5 lessons.
I'm never going to watch it since I heard Picard gets killed in the first 30-45mins. Fuck that, there is no Star Wars without Picard. Edit: Oh and Spoilers
Somehow I'm not surprised, for some reason they have to either destroy or completely render the Enterprise powerless in every single movie they make while, if I remember right, it never happens in the shows and if it has then it's rare. I guess it's safe to assume that's how Picard dies in the movie, he probably stayed behind and evacuated his crew when separating the Saucer section and led a lone kamikaze attack in an attempt to save his crew or to buy them enough time to make it back to Federation space. What a brave, selfless man but from what I've heard is that they portrayed Picard as a coward so I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't separate the two sections and just decided, for absolutely no reason, to sacrifice his entire crew along with himself.
Right. Star Wars has this wonderful roster of characters that people already care about and are already invested in, and this movie had the opportunity to delve into these characters develop them a bit more, and it just didn't. For example, Instead of having Admiral "It's a Trap" Ackbar who we know from the original trilogy and played a significant role in the Rebellion take over in Leia's absence (which would have made narrative as well as fan service sense), they brought in a new unheard of character, the pink haired vice admiral. Likewise, Lando Calrissian should still be alive and kickin', but he's nowhere to be seen. The new trilogy so far feels more like a soft reboot than a continuation of the story.
Did you notice that Ackbar was sucked out into space and killed (when Leia used the force to "fly" back)? All the top leadership died at that moment and left the Resistance in a real hole.
For me, it's like Luke Skywalker's original story was for absolutely nothing. He wanted to be a hero, to fight the empire and make the galaxy a better place. He failed. Completely. The empire? Still around by a new name. An evil Jedi/Darth Vader to enforce their will? Yep. Coruscant is destroyed, along with a few other planets, thanks to their super weapon. None of the "mystery boxes" Abrams loves panned out, as usual (LOST). Han Solo is dead. He and Leia didn't last. Luke failed completely. Leia is now gone. All to set up Mary Sue (i.e. Rey, who is perfect at everything). Rey is now both Luke Skywalker AND Han Solo. She's an awesome pilot of the Falcon with a Wookie sidekick AND the newest, bestest Jedi EVER. Is it ever explained how she somehow understands Wookie speak? No. Mary Sue. Luke learning the force, becoming a Jedi, was all for naught. The rebellion is now at it's nadir. The New Order has all but destroyed a handful of them. But that's ok. That was intended so that Rey can build them up again. Luke's story and reason for the entire trilogy was wasted so they can start all over again with Mary Sue. She will essentially have to train herself, because she only appeared to have a few days training under Luke. But that's ok, because there appears to be literally NOTHING this girl can't do better than anyone else. She has less training than Luke and she's standing toe to toe with Kylo and nearly winning. If only she could sing really well, she'd be textbook Mary Sue. Edited to add: Finn's story was WORTHLESS. Waste of time.
Basically your whole argument is "The battle between good and evil was pointless because 40 years later the evil came back and the fight continues." It makes no sense. Luke didnt fail at all he won HIS battles during HIS TIME. His time is over and some of the whiny petulant fans cant deal with it. If Rey was a guy NO ONE would be calling him a "gary stu." And FINNs story is awesome. I could have done without all the scenes with the space horses, but other than that the movie was fantastic.
"His time is over" You don't have to ruin a character just to make a new one look good. Why have Luke in this movie if he's gonna act the opposite way we knew him as, barely do any training for Rey, and just cower in fear and shame. All while Rey is gradually getting stronger and more powerful. Rey literally stands over Luke who is fallen to the ground with mud and rain all over him, and has a Lightsaber held at him. It's fan service that fails at fan servicing. And no, people aren't hating Rey because she's woman. If the SW fans were a bunch of woman-haters, then why is Ahsoka Tano considered one of the best SW characters outside of movies? Because she's a well written character, Rey isn't. Shes unnecessarily overpowered (wipes the floor with the main bad guy in the FIRST FUCKING MOVIE) Her entire adventure relies on convenience. She contradicts herself alot. (Giving Finn a hard time for not being willing to help, then a few minutes later runs away saying "I want no part in this!" She gets more and more powerful with the force despite barely any training. She has beaten literally EVERYONE that's tried to fight her.
Justa Person Reys story isnt the boiler plate "heroes journey" she paid her dues on Jakku where she had to fight know how to build things etc. We never saw Indiana Jones take boxing lessons in a training montage with "eye of der tiger" and slowly learn how to beat up Nazis either but nobody called him a Gary Stu. Lukes force projection battle at the end was awesome they didn't "ruin his character" at all they developed it just like Obi Wan and Yoda toward their ends. I'd love to see an adventure with younger Luke but this wasn't it and wasn't meant to be it. Hes older than Obi Wan was in episode IV --which if made today would have people whining they "ruined him cause he just stood there and lost a lame light sabre fight."
She clearly doesn't need the books. She's known about the force for at least a week. Look at how she beat Jedi Master Luke with a stick! No training required! I didn't really agree with the Mary Sue tag Rey got in ep7, but I do now lol.
Eh, she beat Luke who hasn't been trying to use the force or been in any combat for like 5-10 years. How long ago did Ben turn? assuming he found Auktu, he probably already cut himself off from the force, and was just there to live out the last of his days.
There IS a good reason why Luke didn't go to Crait in a physical form. If you remember, Luke says, "Nobody is ever really gone". While most people will (agreeably) see this as a reference to Han, or even himself as he will surely not survive what he knows he has to do. He is talking about Kylo Ren. He knows has to right the wrong he feels he caused and help turn Kylo back to the light. And the best way he can achieve that goal is to show him the power of the light side of the force. And to do so effectively without actually killing Kylo. Because that is what started (for better or for worse) the whole Kylo/Luke dichotomy. Luke knows that Rey is right about Kylo not being a lost cause.
Greg Johnson that's pretty interesting, I hadn't thought about it like that. I was disappointed with the movie but that's actually pretty cool, thanks.
All the hate is from the years of speculation of how Luke would be used and how powerful he would be. It ended up feeling like finding an old Porsche spider in mint condition in some old dudes garage and just driving it in 1st gear around the cul de sac and then immediately parking it forever.
Luke was never a powerful Jedi. He kinda sucked it up in the original trilogy the whole time. Him failing as a Jedi master was the realistic progression of his character. And his impressive use of the force and understanding of true power in the final scene is the testament of his final maturity.
No, that is where a certain section of hate is coming from. It is the only part people who were totally ok with Disney turning SW into a children's film made to sell cute animal toys at every turn want to focus on. This movie has so many issues; bombs falling in space, popsicle Leia, two terrible characters on a pointless journey to find another terrible character, bad dialogue turning a once promising character in Poe into a complete moron who has to over explain thing to terrible character number 1, ridiculous amounts of misplaced humor that breaks from any sort of actual immersion into the plight of the resistance forces, unimaginative "lets just make things bigger" bad guys and weapons, and to top it all off did I mention the shameless money grab over children's toy style animals all over the place? I thought that the general plot and outcome of the movie was a perfectly acceptable place for the story to move. Luke never was some super Jedi, he was always flawed. Rey is still an awesome character and I thought Kylo Ren became a better character instead of the whiny Vader wannabe that he was in TFA. However, with all of the other issues here it was very hard to focus on the actual good parts of the film because they were overshadowed by all of the crap that was put in. It is a bad movie and that is unfortunate because it had moments where you could see that the bones of a decent/good movie were there.
Yeah, the original poster is such an arrogant prick that he cant fathom why someone liked this film. He cant wrap his head around it because he didnt like it and cant understand that other people have different opinions. I loathe people like this, being so arrogant that because you dislike something that means everyone must also dislike it because of course his opinion is the correct opinion, anyone who disagrees with his opinion is, to him, objectively wrong. He is saying this cant be the real kevin smith because the real kevin smith must surely have the same opinion as him, because he cant be wrong, its those who disagree with him that are wrong. Btw i love rogue 1 liked ep7 and did NOT like ep 8 i just hate pricks who think their opinion is objective truth and everyone who disagrees is wrong.
@@corvus2512 No dipshit, Kevin is known for being SAVAGE over Star Wars, he's even ripped on the originals for things he didn't care for. You're the arrogant prick and you clearly don't understand the source material the OP and the rest of us seem to understand.
Luke said he came to the island to die and he was never gonna leave. But he shows he's the Legendary Luke by his actions at THAT moment not the sarcastic version he's ashamed of. Thats the way i saw it. Alot of for shadowing in this movie.
Loved your comments at 22 minutes on Luke, R2, and seeing that message from Princess Leia. This gets right to the emotion I felt having seen A New Hope in 1977 and taking my kids to see The Last Jedi this past weekend. Well said, Kevin!
I quite liked that bit, it's tasteful nostalgia that actually served a function in the story and elicited the same emotions in you as it did Luke's character, rather than just being there purely for the sake of it. There was a bit too much of that in TFA I think.
OMG Kevin, i love how emotional you got about the R2-Luke reunion. I adored that moment too. I felt a little sorry for R2 in this film and that he was kind of left out of it a bit. I know its supposed to be moving on from the originals but that cheeky little guy (as you so rightly say) was the heart of the saga
1. Take a Return of the Jedi Luke action figure and a Last Jedi Rey action figure and sit them next to each other 2. Place a firecracker between them 3. Light the firecracker 4. Now, take Rose's advice to heart and "save what you love."
Everytime we get a new Star Wars, a subsection of the viewers come away saying "Never again. This ruined Star Wars." ....but they always come back...and they hang around for years trying to make everyone else hate it because they hated it. So come on guys. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. Thats fine. But you need to accept that other people DID like it. Trying to drag their enjoyment down because you didn't enjoy the film makes you petty as fuck. Just be content with your own opinions and let other people like what they like.
Anakin: You're a Jedi Knight, aren't you? Qui-Gon Jinn: What makes you think that? Anakin: I saw your laser sword. Only Jedi carry that kind of weapon. Qui-Gon Jinn: Perhaps I killed a Jedi and took it from him. Anakin: I don't think so. No one can kill a Jedi. Qui-Gon Jinn: I wish that were so.
I so wanted to love this movie. But I walked out of the theater feeling gut punched and disappointed. We got to see Luke come into his own in the OT but never got to see that Luke be the Jedi we knew him to be. Instead we got a tired, bitter old man. This was not the man who brought his father back from the dark side. This was Jake Skywalker, not Luke Skywalker.
I like being surprised. Like when I'm surprised that a restaurant used brown sugar instead of cracked pepper on my steak. I am not surprised when I order steak and get pickled duck fetus, I'm pissed. Fuck Rian and his post modernist, deconstructionist bullshit.
This video provides the basis for an excellent drinking game. Every time Kev says “man”, take a shot. Every time he says “...and shit like that” take two.
You would eat anything Disney shovels down your throat with a Star Wars title on it..Use your fucking brain and THINK about what you're seeing..Christ some of you 'fans' are so fucking dumb...
+Jeff Nelson haha yeah...talking about how corse sand is, standing in bantha shit and midicholorians is totally a Disney thing...back to 90's for you where apparently the REAL fans reside clutching your fan fiction or some shit
Spoilers for those who havent watched it.. (And if you are reading this why haven't you) The reason Luke force projected himself onto the final Planet was to do the impossible. He was one man versus the might of the First Order. He did it to be the "Hero" that was needed and not just for that moment but for the future Generations. Which is why the kids at the end were another huge part of the story. They were showing that what he did reached across the galaxy to even the small folk. I loved the movie so much.
This scene made me tear up man. I loved it, Luke Skywalker became a Legend. In many ways I liked this rendition, rather than if he had become a Master and trained people until his death. Holy shit, this movie was so good. I am on my 5th viewing now.
There's a book called the legend of Luke skywalker and it's the kids on their way to canto bite telling stories of Luke and pondering if he's real or just a legend The kids at first I was like?? The fuck is this. But in the book it ties it up nicely!
Luke through the ages: "We got to save the princess"...."I got to save my friends on Bespin"...."I have to confront Vader, I can save him"....."Who the hell are you? GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!"
@@RayOfTruth He beat Vader. Then threw down his weapon and accepted death instead of going to the dark side. "I'm a jedi, like my father before me." He lashed out in anger at the threat to his sister. Once he realized the path it was going to take him down, he stopped.
@Funk O'Matic Exactly, thirty years happened, shouldn't he be wiser? Didn't he ever prepared for a situation of an aprentice going to the dark side considering It already happened? Didn't yoda tell him the future is always in movement? If something changed him show It in the movie. Luke in this fucking movie is fucking stupid
@@ammovies9801 Luke in Last Jedi reminds me of the fumble that Anakin made in Revenge of the Sith. Because they both fought instead of meditating on the vision, they made the force vision come true. I think the Force shows what will happen if they, or another person, continues the path they're on.
Ronnie Darko He has a line of them on his website. He even sells the shirts he wears. So yeah, I'm pretty sure he wears a new one every day, pretty much.
You are quite literally the John Gruden of movie analysis, lol. There’s not one football player he doesn’t love, there’s not one movie you don’t love to emotional movement. You two are kindred spirits!
C. Alan man just because he liked he movie doesn’t mean he doesn’t hate anything. It’s actually refreshing to see a guy who can criticize a movie and it’s flaws while still appreciating a good movie despite that. This is exactly that.
Never thought about it till you said it, but yeah even the moment of silence after the light speed kamikaze would've been a fitting thing if it was Leia who piloted it.
i thought the same, especially since they have to write out Leia anyways. Had two opportunities to do it in TLJ, i guess we will see what they decide to do.
They had already finished filming the scenes before Carrie died. It would have been disrespectful of her memory if they wrote her out because of her death.
The laser sword thing is a reference to the discount lightsaber toys each time although I will say I doubt rian knew the reference and mark likely threw that in.
Joseph Watson ...and later threw into The Phantom Menace as an Anakin line. "I saw your laser sword. Only Jedis have that kind of weapon." Poor kid didn't even know the plural of Jedi is Jedi.
Cock Knocker was a silliest role KS could've thought of giving Mark Hamill, just to fulfill a fantasy of directing a light saber fight. The waste of talent was too embarrassing. MH was just too kind to take on the role. And do remind me of how much action did the elder jedi -Obi Wan- get in the first trilogy.
I could have sworn there was an off Han (get it?) comment in the original trilogy mentioning laser swords. I'm pretty sure they were referred to as laser swords during production of the originals, they probably only said lightsaber maybe three times in the three movies. Lightsaber really took off through the post-movie marketing than in the films. I wonder what they said in the scripts.
@Sangtrone Pretty much Sith and Jedi use the terms "lightsaber" and sometimes "swords"(Which is confusing because in the Expanded Universe and this film we see people both Force-sensitive and non-Force sensitive using traditional medieval swords as well and after all what is "Star Wars" if not medieval times in space?) ,people in the Galaxy who have yet to have Jedi training say "laser swords".It`s pretty straightforward.
I got the impression that Luke wanted to help, but also wanted to die on the island. He helped them escape, and then joined the force in peace. As you said, I think we'll see him again.
Luke couldn’t actually be on Crait because he had to deny Kylo Ren victory. Luke denied him that darkside catharsis while simultaneously protecting Ben Solo from the burden of killing yet another family member which would only have cemented his fall to the dark side. That’s how I interpreted it.
Snoke's near-final dialogue has an alternate interpretation: he wanted Kylo to strike him down. The conniving Supreme Leader was taunting Kylo. Kylo Ren: “I know what I have to do.” Snoke: “You think you can turn him. Pathetic Child. I cannot be betrayed. I cannot be beaten. I see his mind. I see his every intent. Yes. I see him turning the lightsaber to strike true. And now, foolish child, he ignites it and kills his true enemy.” To complete his training and fulfill his destiny, Kylo Ren had to kill his master (adoptive father figure/the past). Has Kylo Ren achieved a new level of strength and power? Was this a component of Snoke's master-plan? Luke is now one with the force. Is Snoke (Plageius?) also one with the force? Has Snoke achieved immortality? Is the game over? Is the quest for balance in the force one that must go on forever? There's more depth to this film than many Star Wars fans are accustomed to. Sincerely, a Trekkie
Possibly. He may have jumped bodies into Kylo or Rey, but hasn't taken full control yet. Or perhaps there will (also?) be a final balancing in the force realm involving Luke, Snoke/Plageius?/The Prime Jedi?. If the next film is the end of a 9-film arc, there needs to be a conclusion to the over-arching story and themes. Something knocked the force out of balance and it must be restored. The force has been violently oscillating between dark and light. An equilibrium must be achieved. To bring things full circle, the resolution should reflect the mythology established in the prequel trilogy. It should also deal with the flaws of the Jedi Order and what drove their downfall... Original code: Emotion, yet peace. Ignorance, yet knowledge. Passion, yet serenity. Chaos, yet harmony. Death, yet the Force. Later version: There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.
Interesting. A jedi is killed and they can come back to influence other Jedi. If a Sith lord dies, can they come back to influence other sith? Does each generation get more powerful due to the influence. Remember, Darth Vader was able to block laser blasts (from HS in ESB) with his hands.
I watched again the movie after several years and saw your review : I really think that “laser sword” was a slur, written on purpose to point out Luke’s rejection on what he thinks is a stupid plan. (Btw: loved how much you appreciate to show us your high - skill chewie impression)
Luke in episode 8. Many complaints about 8. No point in arguing all of them because at this point you've already made up your mind. You like it you don't. Or you like it but it's not perfect. I can understand that. But after two viewings I must say to complain about Luke and complain 8 didn't honor or said an FU to the original trilogy is both wrong and in many ways childish. As well as calling Hamill a bad actor. Please. So complaints about Luke. Ok for all the "experts" on 4-6. Episode 4. Technically Han saved Luke from dying. One could argue he failed. Luke alone didn't defeat the Empire. The rebels as a whole did. Empire. Again HAN saves Luke from dying. Vader easily could have killed Luke but held back to try and recruit his son. Luke didn't listen to Yoda. Failed and made a mistake. Jedi. Luke grew in power. Beat Vader. Was no where near a match for Palpatine. Failed. He was being murdered and only his father saved him. Luke didnt win against Darth Sidious. In all 3 films Luke repeatdly fails and is saved by someone else. He made errors. He was flawed and didn't win anything on his own. Fast foward to episode 8. The LEGEND of him and the Jedi grew past what they actually were. As he told Rey take away the myth of the Jedi and making them deities. Their legacy was failure. They created powerful sith lords. They don't own the light or the force. That's Vanity and Hubris. The force will exist without the Jedi. Very smart writing. People complain about Luke hiding. He didn't hide. He failed his sister. His best friend. His nephew. The galaxy and the Jedi order. That kind of turmoil could and would send anyone into exile. The legend of Luke made him out to be this perfect unkillable person when in reality he wasn't. He couldn't defeat the empire single handed then nor the first order now. Great line. "Did you expect me to take on the entire first order with a laser sword"? Enter Crait: The resistance is done. Their all going to die. No one is coming. Luke saves the resistance. In facts it gets reborn. Poe and the rebels see Luke Skywalker, Jedi master go out and single handedly survive an onslaught that is impossble. He buys them all time to escape. For anyone whining about this. 7 movies. What movie did anyone from Yoda to Palpatine have that kind of power? Lifting an empty X-wing out of a swamp is vastly different then lifting 10 Guerilla ATAT. No saber could defect blasts of that size. Idc about books or comics. Even if Luke trained nonstop for 30 years. He is NOT a god. He's human. He's not Superman and it would have been beyond silly to think ONE single human can take on an entire fleet. But at the end his legend grew even more. Kids are playing Luke vs first order and already have been given tales of Luke Skywalker defeating the first order ALONE. This will travel through galaxy of Luke being able to take on Kylo Ren and the first order even though we all know it's false. But sometimes people need to be inspired. Much like believing a man can walk on water or turn water into wine. Kylo tells Rey the strain of her communicating with him would kill her from that distance. Luke shows how powerful he was projecting himself throughout the galaxy and interacted with Leia and Kylo. One could easily argue not constantly using the force is like a weakened muscle. Compare Obi wan in 3 then 4. Just after 18 years you see the level of power difference. What other film has any Jedi done that? None. If Luke died to Kylo Ren or Snoke people would have cried bad writing. If Luke did some elaborate CGI tossing around 100 ton machines battle it would have looked awful and made no sense. Luke may not have won the way YOU wanted. But he won. He is NOT the last Jedi. He saved the resistance. He gave the galaxy the spark it needed. He died a legend. Cry about Rian Johnson all day. Yoda was exactly how he was in Empire. Even using the original molds to create him. Luke had a perfect shot looking at 2 suns with tears in his eyes and becoming one with the force the exact same way both his masters did. I have yet to read a single comment offering a better ending then that.
Christopher Edwards I like your take on Luke. I am a huge fan of the legends books and I like many others have a completely different person in mind when we think about Luke after the empire was defeated. I think that difference of perspective is driving a lot of the anger at TLJ's portrayal of our favorite Skywalker. Thanks for sharing your view, it's helping me look at the movie differently.
Thanks man. However i was wrong. Googling the weight of an ATAT they estimate them at 600 tons. Like christ in Marvel comics the Hulk picks up around 100 tons. The HULK. Watching episode 8 Luke is standing in front of TEN. Of course i won't lie. The 10 year old in me is like OMG OMG Luke is going to beat them alll! But then I'm like oh wait no lol. Kevin wanted Luke to deflect blasts and hell we all did. But again blocking a bolt from a stromtroopers blaster is WAYYY different then a frigging 80 foot tall machine of death lol. And Kylo said fire EVERYTHING on that man. Yeah nothing in star wars is surviving that. i read comments like derp i EXPECTED Luke to pick up a star cruiser with 1 hand. I'm like dude grow up. Yes the force unleashed was a bad ass game. but starkiller technically altered the direction of the star destroyer and never "picked it up". He also wasn't fighting 10 of them. And I'm not saying the legends books are bad, but disney did make them non canon and however added stuff like force phantoms from the Dark empire comics to episode 8. Each time someone is like omg I hated luke he is soooo different. I'm like yes because I'm 36. You don't think shit i did at 16 i regret? At 26? you think i will be the same Chris in 20 years lol? Luke started episode 4 at 18. It's been 40 god dam years. Pushing 60 yeah he maybe different.
It's a reference to the technical name he and the set designers and art designers used before shooting began, when still in the conceptual stage of making ANH/Ep 4.
it's a reference to the first draft of star wars when it was called laser swords fuck star wars fans that don't get the references and try to outgeeky others
Hey, I'm not defending the use of "laser sword"... but Kevin said he thought that the phrase had never been used before in the saga, which is untrue. It's straight out of the prequels.
This went wrong at "Of course I liked it" That to me means that no matter what was thrown at the screen you would have liked it. Honestly that was the worst time I have ever had at a movie EXCEPT the Crying Game. This movie was a FUCK YOU TO STAR WARS PERIOD.
Only people that didn’t like it are talking about moments. And the story was everything else than terrible. It shifted things in Star Wars. It made a dent. It did what a lot of people wanted with TFA and now are crying about. Going forward we need to detach ourselves from the Skywalkers and the Solos and the C3P0s and R2D2s. That is what this movie did and it did it perfectly. It’s a damn shame that a lot of people can’t recognize that.
Sad that the best parts were the Original Trilogy callbacks which they are swiftly killing off. Next thing you know, Chewbacca will die and the Falcon will get trashed.
Tj6903 Same. The emotion I felt was anger and disgust. They killed her off so nicely, and then fucking brought her back in the second most overused Hollywood trope, with the first being the heavily manipulated relationships attempted to be developed between Ren/Rey/Finn Rey/Finn/Rose in order to set up some sort of love conflict. They even tried this in Prince Caspian, between Peter, Caspian and Susan, despite the fact Peter and Susan were siblings there still had to be tension FFS!
Andrew Fishman Oh no they fight evil that's in like every movie they shoot stuff what an over used trope they talk and say words just like every other movie how unoriginal...,
sinistar Wow, insightful! Leia's "death" scene is unnecessary and does nothing to drive the movie. She could end up in a coma a dozen other ways that make more sense and add to the story.
ua-cam.com/video/pWdd6_ZxX8c/v-deo.html I enjoyed the hell out of that scene and why didn't it "further the plot?" It showed she had a strong handle on the force and that she couldn't be killed by being sucked out into space. It just didn't further the plot in a way you liked.
i always remembered it because it has the same first letters (LS) and i was like "how was the kid so close but just wrong? do they not have the name 'light sabre' on tattooine?" but i mean he was a kid, so
frootjooce Luke Skywalker can call his lightsaber whatever he wants and toss it wherever he wants. Because he's Luke Skywalker, not some wind up toy to pacify fanboys
I think even Lucas called lightsabers "laserswords" once.. an even Anakin says it in TPM. But I like to think that Luke said lasersword because he distanced himself from the Jedi way and that lightsaber is manly a more mystical word for their weapon. It's like saying Soul Calibur is an old sword.
It makes sense because all of Return of the Jedi and the OT trilogy as a whole, ended with Luke Skywalker throwing a sword; just like The Last Jedi started (that's how he redeems the sins of the father). So yeah, Luke hates the weapon, even if he kept it, it is totally implied it was a lifelong inner conflict where Luke kept throwing it away and picking it up, back and forth. Until he threw it for good. And yeah, JJ Abrams' Rise of Skywalker, the single most stupid character betraying moment is where Luke picks up the saber, that moments he picks the sins of tge father all over again, Rey is damned to repeat them. Abrams doesn't undetstand Star Wars, nor Luke.
I'm not sure he's "mocking" Rey as such; I suspect he's just trying to make it clear to her that he's disillusioned with the Jedi "legend". For all his snarking, he does at least try to do right in helping her control her "gift".
Oh yea sure you nailed it she has had the force for like 5 days Luke bested, Snoke dead, and levitating half a fucking mountain yea Luke thought this bitch that apparently is the most powerful Jedi to ever live.... Yea makes good sense ...did your mommy and daddy let you watch the whole movie by yourself ....you know being pg13 and all??!
Yeah... in fact he doesn’t shut the fuck up! Try watching any Kevin Smith movie with the audio commentary and you’re gonna hear what should be a 1-2 minute story turn into ten minutes of rambling while the scene you WERE curious to learn anything about has come and gone, and you’re left thinking, “Well... guess I won’t be finding out about THAT line now...”
It's probably traumatizing to have been sucked into a Willard Wyler movie, turned into a slasher, and have killed your friend. Not a good experience for "Fat-Man".
sort of but not quite right. luke was trying to do what biggs did, which was to receive training at the imperial academy, then jump ship and join the rebellion
got 5 minutes into this, paused it and decided to watch the whole movie, came back and unpaused. thanks for the feels kevin you have a great vision for stories
You know what, I'm 28 and I've just given Into actually watching star wars from original trilogy onwards (I'll get to the prequels at some point) and I didn't like last Jedi, it had its cool moments yes was it a mess? Yes but I'm actually glad Kevin still enjoyed it. I like fast and the furious and I can admit there's a whole lot going wrong in those movies but they don't stop me from enjoying them.
the fact that Mark Hamill went on record to admit he was treated like crap from Kathleen as well as others where from the Main Trilogy . Yet Kevin Smith being "guru" he is on all things star wars and comics and such Still shills this movie . . We have learned so much about what was planned and scrapped by Kathleen and The Woke Brigade cause it didnt fit in her woke crap . While i do not trust much of the folks Like Mike Zeroh and other who pretty much read almost line from line from actual people who do homework or actually get out of their UA-cam chairs to actually interview folks like Jon and Bob and such > Kevin has a in with these folks and you would think he would put down the damn pot and go and talk to Jon and such and say ok so whats teh real skinny on how mark and others where treated terrible . . Great scene . But lets be real . Luke Skywalker is a great Jedi . The fact he felt a dark presence in his nephew would not have deterred him . He would have fought to help Ben turn around and he certainly would noy have turned away and become a hermit . He would have continued to train Jedi . Luke would not have run off like a baby. . I mean Shit lets be real. he survived teh fact he found out Darth was his Daddy and was a champ he was strong . Mace would be proud if he met Luke and that was one Tough MOFO Jedi Kevin needs to put down teh Bong and get his senses back . But i guess if tahts how Kevin gets free crap from teh set iof star wars so be it . this is teh same man who i am sure lost it to see teh script from mallrats in captain marvel and i am sure would tell his daughter hey if a man says ya need to smile ya steal his ride fuck him and is ya need clothes steal em and if ya somehow get alien powers ya blow the shit out of a old ass jukebox . dont go outside some distance and fire ya alien powers at a rock and if ya cant get any minority women to write some reviews about a movie ya star in ya just blame it all on the white nazi males . dont think for one moment that instead of writing about your important role in a ok movie that they are righting about more serious subject matters like hunger in america /the world . how a particular native american culyure is dying and they are trying to save what remains of their culture in book form , or DRUG abuse and teh whole Brave New World Better Living on Drugs including Pot will be teh end of us and such . You just blame it all on men like ya mom thinks men are teh bane of this world . Buy hey that was dope. I actually would have loved to see Luke finally make some sense to ben as they hug and the look at Rey and say lets restart the Jedi Order . now that there is no dark force . well maybe a new one is born as Luke says ok i just felt something did you and rey feel it . sure did . well lets get to training . Cue the Best
@ Kevin Smith, Luke couldn't leave and go there in person for a few reasons. 1. if he had, he knows he was likely not strong enough to take on all of those fighters plus Kylo 2. maybe he was powerful enough and that means he would have killed Kylo, is that really the Jedi way? or is he going as a ghost as a way to try and still get Kylo to turn back. 3. his role in that moment is not to actually kill and take down Kylo, it's to inspire the 'new hope' of all of the resistance, to restore the 'legend', to restore that legend that continues into the final scene of the movie where you see kids telling the stories and a new 'presumed' jedi as a kid as he looks up to the stars as Luke once did. Luke's purpose in that scene was much bigger then to just go there and kick everyone's butt. I like that Luke went out as a hero, as someone that is going to inspire generations. None of that would have happened if he goes in front of Kylo in person and gets killed. That then destroys the spark and no hope of the resistance. Remember, the resistance also doesn't know in that moment that Luke then dies. They go on , at least for a while feeling, The Jedi is back! We have hope again, we can grow and defeat this enemy.
Yup, I want to see it again. This is a movie that will grow on people once they stop whining that they didn't get there way and start looking at it for the movie that it is. I am excited to see it again.
I just listened to some other really amazing thoughts on it on some Collider channel videos. Very interesting theories and even deeper into what I was thinking as well. Rein went much deeper then people are giving credit for. When they read what he has said as well as just look deeper into this movie, a lot of the choices people were upset about, make a lot more sense
Jeff Dietz Your comment made me re-evaluate that scene and I now can agree with that direction. As much as I would've wanted Luke to kick some ass then pull an Obi-Wan mid way in a light saber duel with Kylo I'm just gonna accept the way it went. My biggest gripe is that the emotional send off they intended for Luke failed to hit me. I just hope they fix the pacing issues in the next film. I can't believe I'm saying this but I'd rather have a film that doesn't feel like a big climax the entire movie.
i didnt like what they were doing to mark hamiland i know i might get flack for it but i dont like what they r doing to luke or han now hes a weakling and went against all he achieved in rotj
I felt that the Yoda that manifested in TLJ was an attempt at symbolism of "the happy buddha" Yoda had past to the other side, where foolish Mortal whims are of no consequence. His behavior mirrored a state of infinite joy or bliss, that one would obtain through infinite knowledge of becoming one with the force. Yoda was there to convince Luke to let go of his foolish mortal hang ups, let go of the tree and the pointless scribblings in the Jedi volumes. Yoda's behavior was instantly understandable to me; I was totally ok with that "happy buddha" scene. EDIT* terrible spelling and a word. Sorry, typed this on my phone late at night.
There is only one correct opinion, TLJ was written and directed by an amateur. Almost every film critic have never even heard of Rian Johnson in 2017, he made a small budget movie Looper in 2012. J.J. is a veteran in the film industry, Rian is a nobody, harsh but true.
lmao, this comment made my day, just a straight up joke. Star Wars and Star Trek are both enjoyable franchises but so many people take it so seriously that sometimes you just have to stop and enjoy stuff.
Now THAT was a sensible fan review... I liked this... Maybe I wouldn’t have done that... I was hoping they would do this... but none of this “My childhood is ruined. Star Wars is dead to me” crap which is all over the internet. It’s entertainment people. Like it... don’t like it... fine... but some so called fans have turned Star Wars into a religion and are actually fanatical. People need to dial back the crazy meter when it comes to reaction to a movie. Well done Kev. I’m looking forward to seeing where JJ takes IX.
Mark Hamel nailed it when he told Rian Johnson: "I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character." The Last Jedi went beyond epic fail to seeming malice, as if special care was taken to shit on virtually everything that made Star Wars Mythic. It was Karl Marx describing the American Revolution. I left the theater wanting to join the Empire. ua-cam.com/video/6l9go9X1EbE/v-deo.html
Your words on the Leia hologram throwback with R2 and Luke... you got to me, man. I felt it in the theater, but I just teared up hearing you talk about it. I am not a big fan of this film, but thanks for making me have a bigger appreciation for the really great scenes.
That was one of the best scenes. So was the scene with Luke and Leia Even Luke's passing was a beautiful scene (twin sunset, John Williams score) *Visually* I loved this movie... smoke an mirrors.... but after the smoke clears ....
Damn it Kevin. You got me emotional when you got emotional. Damn feelings. Seriously, its good to see you have the same passion about SW that the rest of us do.
He can't speak his mind he now has a career again. If he bashes anyone (like back in the day speaking the truth on Peter Guber). Still a fan but Kevin, you sound like you're the PR clean-up fan. You actually used your friendship, which you once wrote about so beautifully--particular in a series of blog posts--to get "feels" for Batman v Superman because someone you used to know was in the cast. I understand you gotta thin line... but go read some Ebert reviews. You are entitled to your opinion and we want to here your ideas about what you would have done differently. That is a big compliment given the vast number of people with theories, etc. "Just show us something we haven't seen before." "If you can show me something new, you sold me." "I will forever hold that film to my heart for that one minute." Really. Wtf? I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. It is as simple as that. "Hamilton" -- If you stand for nothing/What do you fall for? vs. "Talk less, smile more/Don't let them know what you're against or what your for." Don't wait for it, man. You're back so drop the de-valuing and speak what you think and if someone takes something out of context we'll correct them. BTW I'm also a fan of The Misfits, Samhain and a massive fan of the first 4 Danzig albums. And everything else he has done since has been garbage in comparison. Your either a clap clap clap fap fap fap fan boy... or you are critically acclaimed director and writer Kevin Smith. Hollywood has its eyes on you again. Don't lose your fan base by becoming the new Disney Pimp. At least Chris Hardwick got PAID. Drew McWeeny wrote a great piece about this after Lucasfilm denied him permission to go on an AICN tour because of his comments about the prequels. That man also jumped ship from that site a long time ago and quite abruptly so, not knowing him, I think that's a sign he's a good guy (I'm dodging the elephant in the room to stay on topic). With respect and love and best wishes to you and yours for 2018. And remember, you don't know me. Who cares? If constructive, great; if not, delete from your mind all but the hearts for your other work. PS: Skyland lol!
Gregg Gagnon exactly buddy I love Star Wars I hate all these fans that don’t want to leave stuff to wonder and want answers right away! Mystery and suspense
“That’s how we’re going to win, not by fighting what we hate. But saving the ones we love” All while in the background of the scene The First Order edges ever closer to destroying the remaining resistance members. Completely contradicting her ridiculous statement.
@@BiancaZombie If you know your stuff then youd know that in the book it says that he wouldnt have made it. The heat wouldve destroyed the vehicle he was in before he got inside the conon. And if he had made it in then it would basicly of been useless cause of how fragile it was. Its better to attempt to save someone from a useless death over one that actually has a chance.
I think the film tries to show his craft isn't going to make it (you see it crumpling) or at least cast doubt. But there is some potential of success in there so I get why some people don't appreciate why it's better she saves him. I think the point is that it would have been a wasted sacrifice either way. Just because they have the door shut doesn't mean they're safe forever. They would have found another way in, like they found another way out. It was a hopeless fight. A last desperate plan to try and buy time - but they were trapped as far as they knew. Finn still has a choice to live now and stay with his friends and hold out for a chance. Holdo, on the other hand, carries out her sacrifice because there is literally no other choice. The whole Resistance will die if she doesn't ram the ship. She can see it happening. Finn doesn't 'know' his sacrifice is the only chance (help may still come - and it does), he's just mad at them and full of righteous anger (like Poe at the start of the movie). Poe can see that it is better to retreat and conserve at that point, because he's learned his lesson from earlier in the film and he can see that they're all just gonna die, leaving everyone else with no protection. Survival is the key. The longer you hold out, the longer you keep the spark alive, you more chance you have it will catch into a fire. It's about hope. Is it a bit convoluted? Yes, to my mind. But it ultimately works if you go with it.
I keep coming back to this video, you recognise everything that makes this movie a masterpiece - despite the unwarranted "fan" critique.. But it strange that you also liked Rise of Skywalker though, which narratively is a complete failure.
The best part of this is knowing Jay and Silent Bob still go see Star Wars together.
Blessed be with you.
Ahhh you are mighty indeed! Gives me a warm feeling, nootch
THAT, and the fact that Mark's appearance in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (ahem, Cock Knocker) is SW canon, haha. Can't get enough of Kevin's unfiltered love of all things Star Wars.
And he sits to his left which looks like his right but whatever lol
The adventure, the excitement, any Jedi seeks not these things.
Anakin said “I saw your laser sword” when he was asking QuiGon if he was a Jedi in Phantom Menace.
sexy avatar
women say this to me literally every damned day. i cant take the subway without some random lady asking if she can hold it
So Luke has the intelligence of a kid now?..great...
I mean Luke really has never been that intelligent. But also he was being sarcastic in this circumstance.
George Lucas originally called them laser swords but changed it to light sabers. Both lines are a reference to that.
This review is longer than “Clerks”.
Sloe Bone . I think you are right you know. He is also stoned and drank too many coffees
Just a bunch of rambling.
Like Clerks a viewing also benefits from a little weed.
Was that's supposed to be an insult?
@d d hey superior intellect guy, this video (review) is one hour and 30 minutes. Clerks, the first one is one hour and 45 minutes. Both are over the hour you referenced earlier. Smart ass.
When he says Luke calls it a laser sword, Anakin calls it that in episode one when he talks to Qui Gon
As a child yes, Luke is the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy hahaha I highly doubt he’d call it that if the film was done right
Luke winks at C-3PO because 3PO can read life forms and knows something is off about Luke...
Holy crap, man. You just blew my mind. Something I haven't read before. :O I thought that was a cool scene!
I totally had this thought when I saw it the second time, super cool little thing.
Thought that same thing when 3PO asked “Master Luke?”
And they say this movie is horribly written,
I did not think of that -- good catch
Leia: "I'm Mary Poppins y'all!"
That makes more sense then this so called review
Mr Mammuthus there is a new My Little Pony movie coming to DVD soon I am sure you can enjoy that and stop talking bad about what actual fans enjoyed.
you can be an "actual fan" and not enjoy something lol, its like saying i enjoy burgers but if your favorite fast food joint gets bought out by a big corporation and they change the recipe to their brand of shit doesn't mean you aren't a burger fan anymore if you dont like the way they make it??? i paid the money and watched it, and i'll watch the next one, whether i enjoy it or not doesnt matter - the fact i watch them makes me a fan, but im just saying the prequels were more favorable to me than this
I think in The Phantom Menace Anakin told Qui-Gon that he “saw his lazer sword. Only a Jedi carry them”
Also, Lucas himself would always refer to them as laser swords in his interviews.
George Lucas repeatedly called them "laser swords" in various interviews and behind the scenes videos in the past. It was a nod to him, as well as the Anakin line. I don't people should get so bent out of shape over that
"See you around kid" is also what Han would say to Luke in the original trilogy
DRITTO Official Good call.
“Laser sword” said previously by Anakin in Episode I
Also, George Lucas has a tendency to use the term laser sword.
i thought it wasn't quite right when luke said "laser sword" i was thinking to myself like why didn't he say light saber??? lol😃
Lucas called them laser swords in his early drafts of Ep IV.
It was actually cool that they made a reference to Ep 1-3. Even though they aren't great, they still canon
My PTSD blocked out that movie
Goddammit, Kevin. Leave your hat alone, it's not going anywhere!
BlasterMaster grab yer Annie's
It will only get worse as he gets older
"R2 is kinda Luke's heart" ugh, I lost it there.
Being a fanboy like you for 26 years, I too was bawling with you during that R2 part.
This 90min video was such a perfect overview. Thank you for posting!
renison47 That got me here, as well as in the theater. I shed tears both times. Such an awesome scene, and there’s no one better to describe it than Kevin.
I think you mean 'bawling' - balling is something different all together.
RighteousBrother But still something Kevin would likely be doing in a movie theater.
Yeah the look on Luke's face when he see the projection. He is like "Damn it man, right in the feels."
"This shit gave me a heart attack"
Just think about this: Luke Skywalker turned the tide of the entire war without firing a single shot, or harming a single soul. Now that was fucking epic. “Wars don’t make one great.”
Nunya Bidness exactly. He could of came back earlier saved alot more people and turned the tide long ago.
The thing is he didn't though. He just stalled the enemies and then died. He didn't turn the tide of anything what are you going on about?
Don't worry dude. You're far from the only one that cried with the "help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope" in this movie.
Most of the people on this thread, Michael :-)
That scene did resonate with me too man. Although a lot of the movie pissed me off. I give it 2 out of 5 stars.
Not bad. I wish I was that ignorant of Star Wars. What a bloated and stupid franchise.
chuckles
They ruined the film when they rammed the Borg ship with the Enterprise at warp 9.
What a brave, selfless man but from what I've heard is that they portrayed Picard as a coward so I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't separate the two sections and just decided, for absolutely no reason, to sacrifice his entire crew along with himself.
for being one of the 'prized' ships it sure does get broken a lot.
hmmm maybe you should stop watching movies when high.........it seems to affect your mind and common sense.
Hardly. He raised a lot of really good points.
Yeah, when he finally got to them.
I agree he kisses more ass in this then he ever has.
Really?? Its almost like... he works in the industry... loves the franchise and would sell you into slavery if he could work on the next one!
he is number one fan boy. I agree with him
A "retired" Lando Calrissian running the casino to fund the resistance would have been DOPE... and Darth Snoke Plagueis.
Ramon Rodgers I was waiting for lando to appear in this whole scene, it was teasing us and then we get conned with a nobody in the casino
Everyone keeps complaining about Ackbar but the guy who played the character died so I just thought it was a nice little nod
Yes, but that's my point. You have these supporting characters from the originals, but you don't do anything with them.
"His time is over"
You don't have to ruin a character just to make a new one look good.
Shes unnecessarily overpowered (wipes the floor with the main bad guy in the FIRST FUCKING MOVIE)
Her entire adventure relies on convenience.
She contradicts herself alot. (Giving Finn a hard time for not being willing to help, then a few minutes later runs away saying "I want no part in this!"
She gets more and more powerful with the force despite barely any training.
Sinistar99 you sir are an idiot.
sinistar99 so we should forget mary sue because she is a girl.i don't understand your resoning.does she gets a clean pass because she is a girl?
Rey has the books. Yoda knows it and told Luke in a way where he didn’t quite get it. Shows the books at the end on the falcon.
Kyle H oh crap! I forgot about that! Thank you for reminding me!
If Kevin smith filmed this in 3D he’d have gouged my eyes out 75 times in the last hour
Anyone else think that the "Tracker" looked a lot like a flux capacitor?
Marc E that's all I could think about whenever I saw it
i was like..flux capacitor
IDK i was thinking it looked something even more scientific sounding and pop culture
I was thinking of Star Trek. What's a flux capacitator?
its what makes time travel possible
Exactly
All the hate is from the years of speculation of how Luke would be used and how powerful he would be. It ended up feeling like finding an old Porsche spider in mint condition in some old dudes garage and just driving it in 1st gear around the cul de sac and then immediately parking it forever.
Great metaphor. I actually liked what they did w/ Luke in this movie, but good writing.
Fucking acurate
Luke was never a powerful Jedi. He kinda sucked it up in the original trilogy the whole time. Him failing as a Jedi master was the realistic progression of his character. And his impressive use of the force and understanding of true power in the final scene is the testament of his final maturity.
Luke was never powerful. no need to read anything u say after that LOL lmao wow
Who are you and what have you done with Kevin Smith ?
He started talking? Look, just because he plays Silent Bob, doesn't mean he's also mute in his personal life.
MrManowar6 i think you misunderstood his point
MrManowar6 indeed you did.
Alot of for shadowing in this movie.
makes me wonder why he left a map of where he went.
ashley284 It was a map to the first Jedi Temple, not to Luke. Remember when Han said that people knew him best thought that's where he went?
thanks for that. i wonder if they will get back to that in 9.
Gotta fucken make room for that gdamn darth bb8
P374Wilma It pissed me off that neither Luke or Artoo was happy to see Threepio again.
This movie was about Disney getting rid of the old cast and getting ready to sell toys.
Left out a bit? He's barely in the movie!!!
Darko Ale alas no he isn’t but like I say, this is Star Wars for the next generation
1. Take a Return of the Jedi Luke action figure and a Last Jedi Rey action figure and sit them next to each other
2. Place a firecracker between them
3. Light the firecracker
4. Now, take Rose's advice to heart and "save what you love."
So, I save both of them?
@RobMacRay WHAT?? I know what I want
@ Man, I can definetly see you selecting the "Deathwish" option at the end of GTA V only after two initial playthroughs.

Here is the biggest flaw in the last jedi
ua-cam.com/video/Y2ZMDqSNBdY/v-deo.html
Anakin: You're a Jedi Knight, aren't you? Qui-Gon Jinn: What makes you think that? Anakin: I saw your laser sword. Only Jedi carry that kind of weapon. Qui-Gon Jinn: Perhaps I killed a Jedi and took it from him. Anakin: I don't think so. No one can kill a Jedi. Qui-Gon Jinn: I wish that were so.
MrNogatron (cut to Anakin killing ALL Jedi) ;)
well said!

Take a shot every time Kevin touches his hat.
Take a shot every time Kevin says fuck, fucking or fucked. Not enough alcohol in the galaxy x)
John Caputo in support for and of sexual her-ass-meat awareness month... let's go with 1 full stroke of the worm stick instead.
Chris Wriglesworth who’s Jake?
Luke fishes with an 8 story spear for a 25 lb fish. This sums up the film.
Joseph Butler So you thought the film was badass as well!
Exactly. Dumb ass addition to the line of SW movies. Sad just sad
Holy crap! You’re right. That makes absolutely no sense.
Could've jus force lifted the fish out of the water....and while you're at it, get your fucking X wing!!..smh ...they destroyed luke in this film
Every time he says “...and shit like that” take two.
and all the times Kev says, "F***ing this or "F***ing that". .. .(using the F Bomb over and over removes it's power and is no longer seen as edgy.)
I’m a 47 year old man and I totally get the nostalgia and emotional stuff. Mark Hamill was excellent.
I love that when Kevin mentions what he would have done differently, he immediately acknowledges that it wasn't his movie to make.
Spoilers for those who havent watched it.. (And if you are reading this why haven't you)
The reason Luke force projected himself onto the final Planet was to do the impossible. He was one man versus the might of the First Order. He did it to be the "Hero" that was needed and not just for that moment but for the future Generations. Which is why the kids at the end were another huge part of the story. They were showing that what he did reached across the galaxy to even the small folk.
I loved the movie so much.
Brett Trusler. U got it right. I WISH others would read your words. Well done sir!!
This scene made me tear up man. I loved it, Luke Skywalker became a Legend. In many ways I liked this rendition, rather than if he had become a Master and trained people until his death. Holy shit, this movie was so good. I am on my 5th viewing now.
I really like this angle of it. Great stuff man, didn't think of it that way before. I loved TLJ btw.
There's a book called the legend of Luke skywalker and it's the kids on their way to canto bite telling stories of Luke and pondering if he's real or just a legend
The kids at first I was like?? The fuck is this. But in the book it ties it up nicely!
Luke died straining to defecate on a mountain.
I'm really happy the kylo Luke scene really cemented Luke Skywalker Master Jedi as a legend. The kids reenacting the fight was amazing
How did the kids even hear about what Luke did?
George Lucas always referred to "laser swords." Alec Guinness thought "lightsaber" sounded better :)
Alec Guinness thought 2½ gross sounded better :)
Real or apocryphal?
Alec Guinness was right
Luke through the ages: "We got to save the princess"...."I got to save my friends on Bespin"...."I have to confront Vader, I can save him"....."Who the hell are you? GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!"
Appropriately succinct. Well put.
You forgot the part right before where Luke tried his hardest to kill Vader and only tried to turn him because he ran out of other options.
This guy hasn't changed his shirt in 30 years
Ronnie Darko good point, do you think he might have enough money to own 12-15 of the same type of shirt...?
He prolly has like two.
Ronnie Darko He has a line of them on his website. He even sells the shirts he wears. So yeah, I'm pretty sure he wears a new one every day, pretty much.
So true
Such a clever hilarious comment.
Andrew Gibbons Yes...just like John Gruden and football players...like I said in my first post...
Spider 2 Y Banana
correct
As a Tampa bay fan this is the funniest comment I’ve read in a while
Never thought about it till you said it, but yeah even the moment of silence after the light speed kamikaze would've been a fitting thing if it was Leia who piloted it.
i thought the same, especially since they have to write out Leia anyways. Had two opportunities to do it in TLJ, i guess we will see what they decide to do.
They had already finished filming the scenes before Carrie died. It would have been disrespectful of her memory if they wrote her out because of her death.
Phantom Menace, young Anakin says Laser Sword. Though im sure someone has said it on here...but Just in case..
The laser sword thing is a reference to the discount lightsaber toys each time although I will say I doubt rian knew the reference and mark likely threw that in.
the laser sword comment was a reference to what Lucas was originally calling them till the movie production started.
Joseph Watson ...and later threw into The Phantom Menace as an Anakin line. "I saw your laser sword. Only Jedis have that kind of weapon." Poor kid didn't even know the plural of Jedi is Jedi.
It's sad that Mark had more action as Cock Knocker than Luke.
New Trilogy isnt about Luke. Let it go
Lol 😈👍
Mr. Flufftron3000 Correct, the new movie is about feminism.
Wars not make one great
Did anyone else notice at the end of the movie when they were flying away on the Falcon that the Jedi text was in a drawer?
Are there things I wish they weren't there?
Just the first 152 minutes...
Andrew Kubera 😂
Anakin (Jake Lloyd) from the Phantom Menace said "Laser Sword"!
and it's how George Lucas refers to them a lot in interviews too haha
Lee E. So did Gorge L.
Kylo Ren: “I know what I have to do.”
Snoke: “You think you can turn him. Pathetic Child. I cannot be betrayed. I cannot be beaten. I see his mind. I see his every intent. Yes. I see him turning the lightsaber to strike true. And now, foolish child, he ignites it and kills his true enemy.”
To complete his training and fulfill his destiny, Kylo Ren had to kill his master (adoptive father figure/the past).
Sincerely,
a Trekkie
Original code:
Emotion, yet peace.
Ignorance, yet knowledge.
Passion, yet serenity.
Chaos, yet harmony.
Death, yet the Force.
Later version:
There is no emotion, there is peace.
Enter Crait:
The resistance is done.
Christopher Edwards YES!! And THANK U!!
Christopher Edwards
Spoken like a true poser
Christopher Edwards well said
Lasersword is probably a reference to the Phantom Menace when Anakin comments to Qui Gon about his lightsaber.
Lasersword is what George Lucas has been calling Lightsabers for years... I think he might hate Star Wars more than anybody.
It's a reference to A New Hope. Han, and Luke both call it a Lasersword.
Mephilis 78
I don't recall Han or Luke saying laser sword in a new hope
It's a reference to the technical name he and the set designers and art designers used before shooting began, when still in the conceptual stage of making ANH/Ep 4.
it's a reference to the first draft of star wars when it was called laser swords
fuck star wars fans that don't get the references and try to outgeeky others
Anikin called Quigon Jins saber when he first saw it a Laser sword.
Braxton Brown isn't that..... Isn't that a accurate description visually
Yes, you beat me to it. Yes, young Anakin refers to Qui Gon's lightsaber as a "laser sword"... second time in the Star Wars films.
Just because George Lucas writes shitty dialogue doesnt mean Rian Johnson had to also
Lucas was wrong for using laser sword too. It sounds stupid.
R2 projecting Leia, Yoda showing up and Mark Hamill's performance as Luke Skywalker made very happy. Carries Leia was great.
Derek Seven even though I'm overall disappointed with the movie I really enjoyed that moment.
Nothing wrong with shifting the story (especially considering the age of the staple characters), but this movie did not do a good job of it.
Kevin Smith narrates the Last Jedi XD
True. Not really a review. This was a very detailed recap of the entire movie.
i got emotional during the leia hologram too
ya my grand=dad got a boner during that part.
Chewbacca telling Luke about Han dying and Luke reacting would have been great
The term laser sword was what George Lucas always called them in interviews so I think that was a little wink and a nod to him.
dakeman77 plus anakin called it that in epi I
Anikan called Qui Gon Jins lightsaber a laser sword in episode one.
John Horton George constantly called them laser swords too.
Beat me to it John. Only insane fans seem to remember stuff like this. Glad to find other people like me who need help! lol
i always remembered it because it has the same first letters (LS) and i was like "how was the kid so close but just wrong? do they not have the name 'light sabre' on tattooine?" but i mean he was a kid, so
Right on - I remembered "laser sword" from Episode One when he said that, too.
Anakin was also a child. 😂😂😂
Putting in a Chewie monologue is such a Kevin Smith thing to do!!!!!!!!! Bwahahahahahaha!!!! 😅😅😅😅😅😅
not a huge stretch from R2's beep beep boop monologue. (Watch your language, R2!)
MauLer was right.
“Laser sword” was a way for Luke to make the idea of him returning and saving everything sound like a stupid idea
I can agree with this.
Or so Disney can copyright the name "Laser Sword"
frootjooce Luke Skywalker can call his lightsaber whatever he wants and toss it wherever he wants. Because he's Luke Skywalker, not some wind up toy to pacify fanboys
maybe lol
frootjooce uk, people would care more about your points if you didn’t throw insults at them every few sentences.
Good Lord, this movie has people so divided, hell even the comment section is divided
Bruce Deliso Unfortunately, Star Wars does that to people.
YOU ARE YOUNG KEVIN.
STAY SOLID AND THEY WILL LET YOU LIVE YOUR DREAM AND DIRECT A STARWARS MOVIE
If Kevin is afraid of doing an Episode, he should totally ask for a Jar Jar solo flick
Anakin refers to a Light-sabre as "Laser-sword" in Phantom Menace. It's almost like Luke purposely used that term to mock Rey's youth & naivety.
Exactly. And it's arguably also a wink towards those who remember the off-brand toys...
It's also the original term Lucas chose for the light saber. I agree that Luke uses it as a pejorative to mock Rey. I dug the line.
I'm not sure he's "mocking" Rey as such; I suspect he's just trying to make it clear to her that he's disillusioned with the Jedi "legend". For all his snarking, he does at least try to do right in helping her control her "gift".
i can tell you loved this movie :D
Oh yea sure you nailed it she has had the force for like 5 days Luke bested, Snoke dead, and levitating half a fucking mountain yea Luke thought this bitch that apparently is the most powerful Jedi to ever live....
Yea makes good sense ...did your mommy and daddy let you watch the whole movie by yourself ....you know being pg13 and all??!
Wait.. I didn't even know this guy could talk..
lol :)
Yeah... in fact he doesn’t shut the fuck up!
This dude does nothing BUT talk. He has like 147 podcasts he does every week that are about 2 hours each.
THE SIGN on the back of the car said "Critters Of HOLLYWOOD", YOU DUMB FUCK!
Luke didn't dream of piloting for the rebel alliance. He dreamed of joining the Imperial Academy in spite of his negative feelings for the Empire.
Christopher Hall Thank you. I ALWAYS tell my friends about that fact and they never believe me.
tell them to check wookipedia haha
THE REBEL ALLIANCE YOU MEAN...
tr1p1ea duely corrected.
sort of but not quite right. luke was trying to do what biggs did, which was to receive training at the imperial academy, then jump ship and join the rebellion
got 5 minutes into this, paused it and decided to watch the whole movie, came back and unpaused. thanks for the feels kevin you have a great vision for stories
Much love for Kevin but is this a retelling or a review lol.
This is criticism i can actually get behind lol 😂
lol
Ep. 8 broke my heart
mickeybunts they're going down a path we can't follow.
Same here
cause your a bitch
Adam McHardie
Your name is Adam
That’s the most bitch name there is
i really don't care. I didn't care enough about my grammar to talk to whiney bitches
lol Kevin just paraphrased the entire movie in and it only took the time it would take to watch half of the movie
Luke dusting off his shoulder was LIT AS FUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKK
the fact that Mark Hamill went on record to admit he was treated like crap from Kathleen as well as others where from the Main Trilogy .
Mace would be proud if he met Luke and that was one Tough MOFO Jedi
Kevin needs to put down teh Bong and get his senses back .
Good response. I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm going around upvoting anyone who actually discusses the movie instead of whining about it.
The Last Jedi 85 minute audio description. :D with 5 minutes of opinion
Less than 5 minutes of opinion, I would say...
I didn't get that far!
ClausenLT haha, me either. i skipped ahead several times trying to find the review
At what point does he review it i don have time to watch the whole thing
that's him trying to lie the less he can
Loved the review Kev. Ignore all these disappointed fanboys
Thank you for your honest personal review!
DAMN IT KEVIN, ... you made me tear up about r2d2 & 3po the true heroes of star wars.
He's such an emotional marshmallow, love him.
i didnt like what they were doing to mark hamiland i know i might get flack for it but i dont like what they r doing to luke or han now hes a weakling and went against all he achieved in rotj
40 years old. I cried like a bitch when that hologram played.
I felt sad just seeing Carrie throughout .. RIP :(
Best moment of the film bar none
AuspexAO me too!
greatest fan boy ever .... just to see a guy who just loves star wars shit this much is heartwarming
I question that anyone who really loves star wars can like this movie at all.
"A ticket is only $8 I got my money's worth!" - Kevin Smith on ANYTHING
Anakin called qui gon's lightsaber a lazer sword
Florida To Maine Connection or it was just because that was how he was portrayed in the original trilogy?
There is only one correct opinion, TLJ was written and directed by an amateur. Almost every film critic have never even heard of Rian Johnson in 2017, he made a small budget movie Looper in 2012. J.J. is a veteran in the film industry, Rian is a nobody, harsh but true.
Anakin said "Laser Sword" in TPM. Also, that's what Lucas called them a lot... which is weird.
Didn't Hon call them that too when criticizing the force in a new Hope?
I think he just called them "Ancient Weapons."
Yup I do believe your right
They also say it in Rebels.
Not really that weird. It's called a lightsaber, but laser sword is an apt description.
I stopped caring about this when Spock died.
Haha
made me chuckle
Wrong Franchise, bUDDY
Nah, when Kirk died in the ripoff decades later.
lmao, this comment made my day, just a straight up joke.
The star wars community doesn't have room for people like you. Piss off.
So you’re telling me Luke Skywalker died on ponder rock?
Mark Hamel nailed it when he told Rian Johnson: "I pretty much fundamentally
disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character." The Last Jedi went beyond epic fail to seeming malice, as if special care was taken to shit on virtually everything that made Star Wars Mythic. It was Karl Marx describing the American Revolution. I left the theater wanting to join the Empire.

Your words on the Leia hologram throwback with R2 and Luke... you got to me, man. I felt it in the theater, but I just teared up hearing you talk about it. I am not a big fan of this film, but thanks for making me have a bigger appreciation for the really great scenes.
Yep
That was one of the best scenes.
So was the scene with Luke and Leia
Even Luke's passing was a beautiful scene (twin sunset, John Williams score)
*Visually* I loved this movie... smoke an mirrors.... but after the smoke clears ....
But saving the ones we love”
All while in the background of the scene
The First Order edges ever closer to destroying the remaining resistance members. Completely contradicting her ridiculous statement.
Well why do we fight? We dont fight just for the sake of fighting in life, we fight for something. We fight to save something that we love.
Hope is the path to the lightside. Hope leads to faith. Faith leads to sacrifice. Sacrifice leads to Happyness.
Balance in the force.
Finn was about to sacrifice himself to save his friends, she robbed him of that.

If you know your stuff then youd know that in the book it says that he wouldnt have made it.
Great point about Luke and R2. Amazing moment.
Too bad we didn't get a whole movie with great scenes like this though.
no hassle true. But once we had the crwl from VII? We knew that was not coming. Right?
Anakin says laser sword in the phantom menace just FYI
George Lucas always called lightsabers, Lasorswords. I thought it was a nice little nod to George.
did he? if so. nice memory. more people should know that.
Laser sword was used in episode 1 by Anakin when they sheltered Quigon and Padme and we're having dinner.
I keep coming back to this video, you recognise everything that makes this movie a masterpiece - despite the unwarranted "fan" critique.. But it strange that you also liked Rise of Skywalker though, which narratively is a complete failure.
