- HALLOOO!!!! (ween)
So as the last days of October approach, I am hard at work on my last project of the spoopy season and needed to upload something a bit more laid-back. So HERE YA GOOO! The pumpkin door from Nightmare Before Christmas! You could consider this part one of two, if ya like.
I tried my darndest to make this more of an understandable tutorial rather than the chaos I generally tend to portray. Hopefully it's helpful if anyone decides to recreate it! I had a ton of fun and it only took me about a day, so... TALLY-HOOOO

Pro-tip for Rachel (and other sewists out there): Hardware stores sell these Strong Magnets on a Stick things that are shaped like mops, but they pick up metal bits. They're supposed to be used for getting washers and bolts off your garage floor or whatever, but NAH, the BEST USE for them is getting all the needles and pins out of your floor before you step on them.
Do you know id you can get these in the uk ?
@@linnetcreative I'm UK and my textiles teacher had a magnet for pins, albeit different (it was plastic and magnet shaped, with two strong magnets on the ends but easy enough to remove the stuff picked up)-I THINK my college sewing room has one too but I don't remember as clearly. idk where they got them from but just so u know that hope for your carpet is alive
Ye, I work at a factory, and those are great
The only problem is a lot of pins these days aren’t magnetic. I think maybe cheaper ones aren’t? I don’t know the cause but it’s super annoying... But magnets are the best pin holders so I always double check the pins before I buy any!
@@abbyroy8430 Aluminium pins, maybe? Good shout 😊👍
The yellow sweater with the black pinafore is EVERYTHING!
The Jack outfit and the end is a close second
It looked orange to me, but I loved it too
@@tobythomas3413 maybe it's because of the screen color of my phone, it looked yellow here haha
Yes! And the ribbon!!!
@@tobythomas3413 I thought that as well. Who knows maybe I'm slightly colorblind
If Rachel ever does merch she should make something that says "who put me in charge of me" also something floor troll related for sure.
Yes and yes
Love these ideas! I hope she also does ✨good enough✨
Don't forget Whisky Grandpa.
I would buy it all.
A shirt with "who put me in charge of me?" Is such a mood. I already want one
When you said “it looks like a very long butt. And you know what that means” I fully expected you to say “It’s gonna be a long ass day.”
🤣 I love it! Next time, I might have to use that line on my husband. He probably won’t laugh, but I sure will
😃
Love your username😂
Lol so good
I wish I could like this twice!
I hope Rachel put a clause in her agreement (to sell the house) that she will not be held responsible for damages due to pin-in-foot injuries. 😆
Time to get the magnet stick and sweep the floor like a metal detector.
My grandma was a seamstress, and a bit of a hoarder.
We sweeped the floor with magnets after emptying the house. There wasn't much on the ceramic tiles, but boy oh boy, the hardwood was a treasure trove.
Mostly pins.
Fun fact from your local archaeologist: When excavating an American historic-period site that was once a domestic structure, finding straight pins and buttons are a given. So. Many. Pins. And buttons. Therefore, I like to think of it less like ever-present hazards and more like my contribution to the archaeological record.
EXCELLENT point. Points.
I love this! Thanks for sharing!!!
Seriously, no need to apologize about the “small project” or the shorter video (which I didn’t think it was). This video was awesome! We LIKE short projects we can do, especially last minute! I can picture some one with several uplit trees making a few versions of pumpkin faces and having a small “spooky forest” each year!
Yeah,I agree
Fantastic idea!
Absolutely!!! I second that. Enjoyed it just as much.
Cookie cake: “Creppy”
My brain: “Creppy Paper”
Idk why but it makes me happy to see Binx more often just being a weird cat and not as much of an enigma.
Yes! Me too
We went to IHOP today & they had crepes on the menu; my husband & I were dying laughing & kept saying "crreeepyyy paaapperrrrr" 😆😄😁
I was so glad to see you wore a respirator while hot carving that styro sheet. Those plastics emit toxic fumes, folks need plenty of ventilation, or like Rachel, wear proper PPE.
Yes any (let’s be optimistic and say *most* ) foam + heat = quite toxic for the tree friends (ironically) and anyone breathing - unfortunately, until someone invents a craft supply outlet filled with environmentally and human nostril friendly Fun Thangs 😟🤞
Me, in denial, living in a tropical country: Ah yes. Autumn. Pumpkins. Sweaters. Crunchy leaves. Yes. Indeed 🥲
If it makes you feel better I woke up to frost on my car this morning 🥲
Hi Ate Bea :))
Trade with me, mom says it's my turn to live in denial
Me in Los Angeles 🤣
Me living in Costa Rica
“It doesn’t have to be exact”
*cuts off stem to make sure it’s facing the right way*
Fuckin legend
I like how binx has now decided its her month to shine...
"The Autumn calls to me mother!"
The balancing act of buying a house and still working is so impressive (just did the same thing in June, I know the pain! ) 🎃💀🍁
Me too!! So ruthless! You just have to keep going when all you want to do is sleep 😂🖤🖤
I remember those days. We kept having to do things house related while I was at work and I had to keep darting away to sign online documents and follow up on stuff. Omg it was awed up.
I can’t believe October is almost over. It has gone by WAY too fast
QUIET YOU.
The sooner to halloween the better lol
We've had one, yes. What about second October?
Yesss
@@justyeeeeeetit yeah
Can vouch for the pins outliving you. I bought my home 10 years ago from an elderly couple who had lived here for over 40 years. I am CONSTANTLY finding pins stuck between floorboards and behind trim, in cupboards and closets, and sometimes even inside the walls. Carol's sewing legacy lives on!
What about a nice, comfy, padded stool to sit on when using your blackboard, instead of having to scrunch down? Also, I feel you need an accompanying pointing stick to complete the effect.
Sorry to interrupt but-mushroom stool.
Or pumpkin stool!! I love how you can make basically anything into a comfy cushion.
I concur!
"Who put me in charge of me?"
I feel this lol
So much.
I ask myself this question every day, but never managed to put it so eloquently.
Don't you worry, any video length is just fine! ESP when you're that busy, like it's super duper ok.
It's like the most okay to ever okay.
Yeah, and besides, there´s usually quite a bit to do in autumn, especially if you have a garden, because if you leave things too long, the frost will destroy them... So most people will be very understanding. =)
Rachel, you’re not alone with wanting to try the Doors when you were young. That’s Escapism, all the Millenials are doing it.
My Brain: "This is Halloween decor"
My Heart: "This is Christmas decor"
¿Porqué no los dos?
This is the beginning of Christmas in my house. ☺️ “Daddy pumpkin” is in cahoots with Santa according to my kids, they write notes to Jack Skellington and ask him to put in a good word with the big guy. 😂
Yes.
Honestly, it'd be really awesome to make every door and then rotate them according to the upcoming holiday.
When I was still living with my parents, my neighbor ACTUALLY called the cops on my family because we weren't crotchety old witches, but VAMPIRES only coming out at night. My dad nearly died laughing!
😂 you're joking!
@@mirjanboumaNo, REALLY! My Dad worked nights, I went to classes, then worked until late, my Mom rarely left the house, and my little bro was the only one with a "normal" schedule. We were just night people. So our neighbor didn't like us and he was a bit off, so he called the police on the "vampires" next door.
Something that always stuck with me about the setting of Nightmare Before Christmas is the heavy use of texture in stop motion. In Halloween town the environment rarely has smooth edges and its all looks cracked and detailed. Even the hills, trees, and buildings match this.
I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one whose goal in life is to be the neighbourhood probably-a-witch! 😊
Me too
Rachel a few month ago: doubting if people want to see her videos.
Rachel now: almost at 1 Million subs.
Seems like we were right, that you should just do what you want and people will like it :D
Hooray! I checked-no Rachel . . . I thought you’d be too busy. And then . . .
If your pins are made of steel, you can get a rolling magnet to pick them up. It’s basically a 24-inch magnet with wheels at each end and a handy, er, handle for wheeling it around. I use mine to pick up stray nails, bailing wire fragments, etc in the pasture, but it would be a dandy sewing room tool too.
There's also a magnet on a stick, a bit like an old fashioned collapsible antenna but with a magnet at the end. It's great for pins that are in difficult to reach places and not having to bend down.
This sounds awesome I want one!
@@mirjanbouma I hacked something like that in high school, only I had two tools: a magnet in a string, and chewing gum on a stick (that was a spur-of-the-moment tool). The latter was handy for reaching through the grate in the bottom of our gym lockers to retrieve an earring that had fallen through.
A removable tree decoration is actually a smart idea for someone that’s moving, but still wants to decorate for Hallowe’en.
“Who put me in charge of me”
“There will be probably be stray sewing pins, in ma casket”
Are the two most relatable sentences I’ve heard all day.
Love you Rachel.
I know this video's about the door, but THAT BLACK N WHITE OUTFIT AT THE END THOUGH!
!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully we’ll see more of it in the next video…. 🎃💀 👑
The last time I was this early was when I was born two weeks sooner than expected
Look, I come to this channel for entertainment and pumpkins. Anything I learn is a bonus 🎃
"who put me in charge of me". i'm printing this and will be framing it as i stare at it in contempt on every hour of the day.
My boyfriend wanted me to tell you that his favorite video you've ever made is the Creature of the Black Lagoon But Make It Vintage episode... And he wants you to make more like it. Love your content! Excited to see the new house 🙂
I'd LOVE another But Make It Vintage video!
You've been absolutely killing it for Maksy-ween this year! It's still 85F where I am but I am living my best fall life vicariously through you!
Same!
It was only 76 yesterday in Florida, so I celebrated by opening the windows! My 5yo was so confused 😂😂😂😂 because, obviously, she doesn’t much remember last fall or even winter - we don’t have long, hard winters. We have long, hard summers. 😂
Buying a house in January, and have had so many ideas for a NB-Xmas themed yard next Halloween, so I will be saving this craft idea for then!
So happy to see you wearing a respirator when carving the foam. We were sitting here fretting over your health before seeing that. Loved the video, of course, but more concerned for your safety. 🐶
ppe is a capitalist construct. birds aren't real
And now everyone is smacking their head wondering why they haven't ever made this either! (though what a cool thing to do in a park or something where people would see it for a group of trees. People would LOVE IT. If I had any artistic talent, I would do just that.)
Or like a horror themed community library! Make a lil cubby in a fake tree or a tree stump and make the door the halloween door. And then put horror books inside. Goosebumps, Fear Street, Lois Duncan books (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Roald Dahls Skins, Steven King, Edgar Allen Poe, etc.
as someone who was also deeply fascinated by those doors as a child, this is SUCH a cool project!!
You are officially the “Pumpkin Queen” in my books from now on! 🎃
Person living in Rachel’s house decades after she dies “what’s that? A sewing pin? Weird. “
“Ow! Did someone throw a sewing pin at me?!”
Ghost Rachel “got em!”
This is a fantastic idea and would be wonderful for a Nightmare Before Christmas themed yard, step 1: get a house with a yard😄. Wonderful job Rachel🤗
"Who put me in charge of me?" I have never related to a sentiment more.
i love you.
I love when Lady Binx makes an appearance. It always feels so special lol ♥️
Love *waves hands* ALL OF THIS but “who put me in charge of me?” Is me everyday. That’s why I love this channel!
How does it feel to know you’re gonna have a MILLION subscribers by the end of the year?! Go you!!
the fact that i unconsciously stopped drawing for a second to do the the little chin on the back of your hand thing when you say ' I upload every/almost every friday'--
This just makes me have the urge to make the whole collection of these doors and then just put them out in the middle of the woods somewhere for some poor soul to find them
I’m constantly asking who put me in charge of me.I’m like a cat; mostly independent but still really should have someone taking care of me.
We don't care how long your video is, we are here for you, lady! It's all good, because we love you! You're such a moment of joy 🤗
I'm having a Very Anxious Day today and this makes me feel better 🥰🥰 thank you Rachel 💜🎃
I hope you're doing better 🙂
Honestly, if Frodo blocked the frame the whole time and we saw you do nothing, I don't think anyone would mind 😅 he's hecken adorable
When I saw the thumbnail, I was like this is such a cool idea. I didn’t even realize it was an homage to nightmare before Christmas until you mentioned it 😂 I haven’t watched that movie in so long.
I’ve been down lately because I got quarantined and had to cancel most of my spooky plans, and I thought Rachel wouldn’t update today but she did and it has made my day
Whaaaat?! The Pumpkin Door?! What a perfectly clever and simple piece of decor! Bravo 🎃
"Who put me in charge of me" Rachel Maksy merch idea? I would buy that shirt
Yes!
Can we have all the merch, please????? *chef’s kiss*
I'll never get over Rachel's creativity 😍 whether it's the editing or CREATING SOMETHING SHE JUST SAW IN PICTURES!! Queen shizz only
Rachel, you absolutely have the best channel on here it doesn't matter if you upload a 10 minute or a 60 minute video it's always going to be entertaining and bring a smile to your face. Now of course I am selfish and want a hour long video of you and frodo & binx having a great time together.
I can't wait to see what you will come up with for Christmas 🎄⛄
Only Rachel could make such a simple tutorial so magical and funny
A magnetic sheet on a swifter stick could help with the pin hunting.
You give the best Autumn serotonin!! I loved those holiday doors and also wondered what the worlds were like and would always secretly hope to stumble across those doors, and the Wardrobe to Narnia.
You are an _entirely_ fun and wonderful _mess_ when you are painting, lol. But I love it and LOVE how this came out-especially against that ivy-covered tree.
Once again you've impressed us with your crafting abilities. Good project. Thank you.
Rachel, you are a ray of sunshine - I just found out my grandmother died last night and I'm overwhelmed with booking flights and a test, and I just needed your wholesome video to take a breather. Thank you for your creativity and whimsy and for just being yourself.
This is a project we all can do. I like it!
You don’t need to apologise! This was awesome video! I completely agree, how has no one made this before?! It’s brilliant!
"Who put me in charge of me?" is a mood. I feel that exact way multiple times a day!
When your dog needs to help remind you not to eat paint 😂🙈 This is such a cool project, though!!! Also, I'm kind of sad you won't be in this house anymore..? But I'm also really happy for you 💕
This was actually perfect, we have 3 large trees in the front yard so Friday after school my daughters and l went to
Michael's and Starbucks for pumpkin spice n' toffee nut lattes, did the project over the weekend for drying time , and hopefully will put them on the trees with the gold icicle lights on Sunday for our outdoor Halloween decorations. You are awesome, thank you.
Rachel is the perfect mix of Jenna Marbles and Christine McConnell ❤️
That's a remarkably spot on formula.
So stinking cute!! Love this idea! I only wish I had a few trees I could do this to on my property!
I've seen a few people suggest magnets for picking up pins, and I agree, it's so much easier! My mom drops pins and needles all the time, and they sometimes even get stuck in the seams of the wood floor. She decided to buy a magnet tool, it's just a magnet on a stick, and it works great, especially since you don't have to bend down as much to get underneath furniture. Total lifesaver, 10/10 would recommend!
Anyway, love all your videos! The chaotic energy has Excellent Vibes.
Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my most favorite things in the world, so I'm definitely doing this! Last year I followed the clay portal door tutorials for Christmas Town and Halloween Town from Midnight Crafts and loved them, but I'm excited to try the life-sized scale of this! BTW, that mustard color combined with your hair color and skin tone is perfection. 👌🏻
i'd like to discuss this OUTFIT WOW the yellow sweater is amazing!
i THOROUGHLY enjoyed this. the end result is so satisfying.
rachel: pumpkin door tutorial 🧡
me: mmmm edible door 🥴
ngl I thought the same thing 😅
Rachel and the Giant Pumpkin? Rather than James and the Giant Peach?
I can just imagine...a bat lady and a kindly skeleton, an apathetic ghost cat(the ghost of only one of the nine lives). She enters it from the top at a pumpkin patch "world's largest pumpkin" it says. She slips on some pumpkin slime and knocks the pumpkin over and the pumpkin rolls down a hill and into the woods below the farm. A spooky scary woods. She lights a candle and carves out windows to peer out, making a jack-o-lantern. Outside is claymation halloween wonderland in the deep woods. She needs to get back home. Also frodo is her animal companion maybe she's in her pumpkin lady attire? Only the batlady, ghost cat, and skeleton man know she's human. Anyways somehow she needs to help the halloween forest dwellers with making props and fixing their costumes for their Halloween production of...Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat. The farmer of the pumpkin patch wants to expand the farm into the woods and somehow she has to play the headless horseman to scare him off from the woods so the forest people can keep their home.
Pumpkin-related projects are honestly the best, I feel like it's the easiest thing to diy bc it's such a simple shape and so versatile
Don’t you apologize!!! It’s freaking magic.
YESS SPOOKY SEASON CONTENT
AHHH ITS SO CUTE
A Mardi Gras door would be Halloween + St Patrick's Day + more beer + music +lots of plastic beads.
Next year in your new house you should go all out and do all the doors and do a Nightmare Before Christmas themed yard.
“which you probably already know because of the title of the video”
me who still pretends to act shocked
Thank you for giving us content even when you're busy and tired! I really really enjoy you and your videos no matter how "small" the project is
I love all your projects!
Whether they’re big or small on this channel.
I had fun here! I’m sticking around for all the days.
It turned out great. Also your first look with the orange blouse was lovely. I really like the Jack inspired look for the reveal as well. You are a Halloween queen.
I just saw trick-r-treat last week and from the first time I laid eyes on Sam snatching that piece of candy out of the principal's bowl, I loved him. Oh my God. I don't know how long I've been missing out but he's the best.
I’m also in the process of moving and I’m barely keeping up with the one class I’m taking; it’s incredible that you’ve been able to put out as much content as you have! Wishing you an unchaotic moving day 🙏🏼
“Who put me in charge of me?” I ask myself that question everyday
Hello, I'm new to this channel but have binge watched a ton of your videos in the past week or so. I am also a sewist and I love to see how other people approach sewing. Thanks for making delightful and whimsical content.
Welcome!
@@mirjanbouma thank you ☺️
That is so awesome. Dang it, I was just at Michael's earlier today to get puffy paint for blood for my kid's evil unicorn costume. I could have gotten foam and then done this on the weekend!
That evil unicorn is going to slap 👏👏🥀🥀🦄
"Who put me in charge of me?"
-Rachael 2021
My husband and I are the weirdos in our condo complex who have our Halloween Decorations up all month. There's three trees in the shared yard area in the back of my unit, and I wish I knew if I was allowed to decorate it, because I'd make this for one of them.
rachel's smudged up face after using the wood burner makes her look like your local chimney sweep with a heart of gold
I love that the mannequin (I think her name is Betsy but I could be misremembering) is a combination Wonder-Woman Batwoman lol
I love your sweater in the intro! Fall perfection! 🍂🍁
I've absolutley been loving all of these fall/spooky season projects! ♥♥♥
This was too cute! Plus it can live permanently at your new house so you can always have your fav time of year with you 🎃
Rachel: posts a video
My serotonin levels: 🚀
this was so fun!!! I moved this year and don't have the budget to buy all the decorations I want, so I've been having to DIY stuff this year, which makes this video perfect!!
Yes, thoroughly enjoyed this one! You're wonderful ☺️
Also, I completely relate to The wanting to be the spooky, witchy neighbor that everyone in the neighborhood thinks it's the crotchety old witch...YES
My friend Rachel needs to not be so hard on herself. She is doing great and my friend Rachel needs to realize that we will devour any content she produces. No matter if it is big, small, creative, vloggy, etc. I hope my friend Rachel knows that she is literally my favourite UA-camr and brings so much joy to my life. She can literally do no wrong.
please know how much i appreciate you for this. ive been trying to make a pumpkin head mask out of the same exact materials you used, and im so stoked it worked! feeling less crappy about it all now. it's so much work!
