I'll go over a great tip I learned over the years to help you to stop being afraid of picking up your pet snake!
"I've never had a ball python strike at me after I already have it in my hand!" ..... couple minutes later..... "she proved me wrong" 😆🤣
It's rare. Why would a snake bite the tree it's in? Sure the tree is weird and it moves but it's still a tree.
"She was biting at the camera not at me" haha
@taygon4 he may have scared the snake they often bite if sudden movements near there head
Meee too
Best part of the video 😭😂
Everyone has to get bitten once by a bp to know that it doesn’t really hurt all that much and it is fine to handle, just go for it. Experience everything.
Appreciate the video! I just got my first normal ball python last week. I had done months of research and this video has helped the most. He’s very curious but getting him out of his enclosure is always scary cause he’s super quick to make that “s shape”. He’s never in a balled position to pick him up he’s often stretched out roaming the enclosure. I grew up with the saying “any good snake is a dead snake” and always scared of snakes, so this definitely is getting me out of my comfort zone! Ive had him a week and I’ve had one successful feeding and holding! We’re still getting comfortable with each other, but he’s great!
How’s he doing now?
@@ambush4851 i second this
Good question? Normals are highly underrated. There's a reason they became popular before all the morphs besides albino
Thanks for adding this.
It's been a long time, maybe the snake won.
Guy: How to not get scared of your snake
Also guy: almost gets chocked the fuck out
Bro I was cracking up! My corn snake tries her hardest to get the job done when I clean her pen but it just makes me laugh!
Just got my ball boi. I've wanted one for a long time and held a few BUT I always get skiddish when it comes to fast sudden movements and actually picking them up. I got a leopard gecko a year back and I've gotten used to having him walk on my hand willingly but the idea of actually being the initiator for the pick up gets my heart rate up. I've been working on my fears because I adore these animals. I just wish my Ma didn't give me these fears to begin with when she tried to force me to hold frogs on multiple occasions when I wasn't comfortable.
I got my first baby 🍌🐍 a month ago and he is the sweetest thing. It took me about a week or so to handle him. This video really helped me become confident in handling Sterling. 🥰
If you put a bucket on my head and grab my butt...we gone be fighting 😂😂😂😂
I picked up my baby spotted Python by my self for the first time today. I’m proud! Normally I’ll have my bf pick him up and give him to me but I’m trying to overcome my fear of being bitten. I know it’s bound to happen one day lol I have a aquarium I made into a space for my snake and I hate reaching from above just as you explained. Soon I’ll save up to get a front open door terrarium. But I try to think.. if I can withstand cat scratches this shouldn’t be an issue but I still have a sense of fear in the back of my head lol thanks for this video, it does help he was so curious and friendly once he was out the aquarium. I can’t wait to get him more comfortable with my hands as he gets older
I needed this. I am so scared and he is so sweet and a baby but I am terrified, thank you so much!
You got this!
Thank you sm. I have 3 gloves on and my arm wrapped with hoodies so I don’t get bitten. I am gonna do this rn. Thanks!! Edit: Got him. THANK YOU!!!!
@@Gxie You don't need gloves, you can barely feel bites anyway.
I got bit once from feeding mistake, it bled pretty bad but I can't say it hurt, it's mainly just the shock of seeing them chewing on your hand or whatever that's disconcerting.
And you don't want them to break a tooth, so no gloves is safer for them.
Me with my teeny tiny baby stimsons python and I used work gloves and a hook to transfer her into her new enclosure. It’s the jump scare that does it!
Great video, appreciate the advice.. Aren't those hides getting a little small?
Thank you so much for such an honest story about your first snake! I looked into getting a snake for over a year (after being interested since I was a teen!) and finally got my ball python Perri a couple weeks ago. My first few times handling him were great! But newbies will make mistakes no matter how prepared, and he's bit me a couple times since then - One time in which he would NOT let go and I had to get my gin - I hadn't thoroughly washed my hands and in retrospect, he was also in hunting mode at the time based on his behaviors prior to me trying to grab him! It's good to hear about beginner experiences from people who are very experienced now, especially being a beginner and having heard people say "if you're scared of handling your snake then you shouldnt have a snake"
I've got a snake that when I first got him, he was super sweet and outgoing and I handled him all the time now he's like this puppy that's ridiculously malleable and will chill on my neck and shoulders probably for hours I've only had him there for like an hour while playing games on my switch he also bit me once lol he thought I was food cause feeding day was in like 2 days
What kind of snake is it?
@@robert1899-e1d ball python I recently got a baby Florida King (Queen) and shes the same way
Still a relevant video, picked up my baby Palmetto yesterday, held her the day I picked her up from the breeder to check her over, now leaving her for a week to adjust before I start interacting with her, weighing her and giving her first feed.
I don't think I'm scared of picking her up, I'm more scared of scaring her. I always get to my knees and work low when I'm in her Viv, so she can watch me at eye level.
Glad I came across this video thank you I just got my ball python she’s 1 years old this video helped me a lot
You gave me a very reassuring comment last week & I found this video. Found out my dude hasn't been handled in months except to be moved. The one time I tried to handle him, he was just like the one that struck at your hoodie. He was out to kill the towel I had in my other hand. I'm still trying to give him time to adjust, so I think I'll give him another week to figure out that: 1. Mom is nocturnal 2. His tank is not going to change again 3. The dogs bark & I also hate hearing it and 4. The ir temp gun & water bottle are friends. I really want to get this dude out soon, but he's been through a week of changes, so I owe it to him to leave him alone until after his next feeding. But also I want to check to make sure he hasn't made any messes in his hide & that he looks good. Like I said before, what's keeping me going is his previous owner thanking me for giving him a better life. I just hope he realizes that we aren't that different.... stressed & sleepless lol
Learning to use s snake hook helps dramatically.
Just a light tough on the head of a rowdy bp will reset that posture and most times have them ducking or moving away. At that point you can reach in and pick up once their attention is not on you.
I usually use the hook to move the snake closer to me, then prevent a strike by head touching or blocking then grabbing. Works every time.
Those hides are hilarious 😂 sitting on top of them 😆
As someone who just got a baby Ball, this has been encouraging. I've been giving her time to get used to her tank since the first couple days she wasn't crazy about me. Now she seems to recognize that I can poke around her tank and I'm not doing it to hurt her. I'm planning on handling her some more after she finishes digesting. For what it's worth for people worried about hide size - ball pythons like to curl up super tight and burrow. It's recommended that they dont even have too big of a tank because it'll stress them out. If you have a kinda big tank, fill it with some clutter - it'll calm them down if they can hide.
Awesome video John. I wish everyone would watch this before purchasing a scale baby. Thanks👍🏾.
Thx Kevin!
I got a young male that bit me and drew blood but it was when I first got him and I know he was scared so I don't blame him. Since then he's become my favorite snake
Awesome!
I have two ball pythons. One is around 6 months old if I was to go by the growth and feeding charts weighing in at 300 grams and also my first ever snake (Zelda) who is incredibly chill and the other is a female easily 5’8 - 5’10” range. This rescue girl let me handle her the first time I attempted to handle her after the rescue after I gave her 10 days to settle in. But that’s the problem she only let me handle her the first time. Every time after that she would let me take her out of her cage but she would lash out and try to bite me in the face but she’d only successfully get my arm. She does let me do maintenance of her enclosure (spot cleans, water bowl cleans and changes, even moving things around in her enclosure to give her a new reason to be curious. This snake has me pretty freaking terrified of it due to its sheer size and it’s crankiness. Let’s me take her out but will go crazy once she’s out.
Thanks for the info, I’m definitely thinking about getting a couple at some point. I had to give shots to a German Shepherd for diabetes. It needed the jab at 6am and 6pm while she was eating. I would always have to get everything prepped because when you talk out to give her food she would growl. While she was eating I would walk up behind her and give her it with no real problem. Most ppl were too afraid to help take care of her lol. Watching your video helps give me some more confidence though.
This felt like something great for me, I have my cinnamon piebald girl and she is absolutely wonderful in every way, she eats well, never sheds bad, really curious and just been awesome… but after she bit me like a month or so ago I been so scared to hold her.. like my mind automatically went from “she is so great to handle” to “she will bite me if I try” and it’s like deep down I know she wouldn’t do that if I just tried to hold her again like I know how to handle her I always pick her up from behind but I hope this maybe will help me be able to handle her again cause I really love my girl and I wanna handle her again
This definitely helps. I just received my first snake yesterday. I became a little concerned after going in to check the temperatures in the enclosure and seeing the snake striking at me from the other side of the tub(tub is temporary…just letting it grow before going in it’s bigger enclosure). This tactic will give me more confidence when I eventually start handling after the first week or so. Provided it eats ok 👍🏽 in a few days.
How's it going? Is snakey snake eating well and everything?
Great video. Cool guy and beautiful animals.
It seems like you need bigger hides for your snakes 😂 and as far as I know you need 2 hides in a basic ball python enclosure, one in the warm and another in the cool side
Thanks this really helped me with my 3 month old bp she had bit me real quick I’m assuming she thought I was food because she immediately let go she also has never done that I held her the first time I got her never bit me took her out of her enclosure also never bit me and she seems to be very comfortable but this gives me confidence again
Usually a bite and let go is defensive. A feed response would be if she bit and then tried to wrap or held on
I have a 4ft long 7yo female ball python, that was formerly my ex's till we broke up. I've held her once or twice but only with my ex around helping me. Glad for this video. Now to work on handling her solo
I had never held a snake before I got mine. I kept it him in the bag and left him sit in the bag in my hand until my heart rate dropped, and I felt comfortable enough to take him out. Whole process probably took 5 to 10 minutes maybe. The only time he hisses at me is if I mess with him during the day, he clearly doesn't like being woken up. He's only struck at me when I didn't pet him before I picked him up, that was my fault lol.
What morph is Little Miss Bitey (haha), she's STUNNING!
I don't remember the exact morph but it included sterling.
Time for larger hides?
11:52, don't worry she is not going to bite me now that I'm holding her.
Snake: Wanna bet?
Anytime I’m at the reptile show and am interested in buying a python I always ask if I can hold it before I buy it.
Just boat a banana ball. He is so chill but I am still careful lol
its so funny that he is just crawling on him. i just got my first snake recently he is so sweet.
Is it okay to use a snake hook when transferring it to a Ben for feedings?
It took a while to get my old lady to pick them up out of the tub she wld always hold them but so so scared to grab them... lmao 🤣
Haha you did good! Mine won't even touch them after 2+ years now!
Are the hides big enough?
I’ve had two snakes, and my third one scared me a lot. She’s sweet but is more defensive. She’s super quick to react whenever I unlatch her tank lid and slide it off her tank. I’m trying to get her more used to me.
Any tips on keeping your first snake ? He’s a corn snake 😂 but I’m a bit anxious with him
Great video appreciate it. What about when you first get your first ball python using gloves to start with
Hello, I’m new to your channel good video. Anyways, I don’t have a snake yet. But I’m planning on getting one, Dueing my first few days, im gonna be wearing gloves during handling for a bit. 😂
Good luck!
I had heard that a ball python won't strike at you once you are holding them. I picked mine up and it struck at me three times when I was holding it.
Really awesome video I appreciate all the advice 🙏
I don't have a snake but I if I had one then I would get a corn snake and name it Poppy aka Miss Poppings (the character reference)
Great video!💯
I remember the first time i got my little girl i used to be scared but allways wanted snake after few weeks i manage to handel her no problem i think for me thw biggest deal was i watched to many movies with snake attacking but once i got her relised how docile those snake are honestly couldnt recommend more
The issuse I have is my guy will let you pick him up. But he's always jerky when holding him. He'll bump into say your hand and jerk his head back real quick and do The S shape for a few minutes. Or he prefers to speed handle as my nephew calls it. He's moving full speed while holding him. He's from what I was told a candio clown. He's a light cream color with some yellow white little bit of orange around a couple of his patterns. He's maybe a year old. About 2 ftt juvenile. He don't hiss or strike either.
I'm not afraid of the pain really(warning/caution nips barely even bleed), it's just that when she has bit me(very rare, maybe 2-3 times in 16 years)- it happened at TOP SPEED and my instinct was the yank away/flinch/whatever. Kind of like when you see a spider on you. I like spiders, I'm not afraid of them. But looking down and suddenly seeing something has jumped on you makes you go 'AH!' and when that's happened to me I smack them away- it's reactive, I can't help it. Similarly when a dog nearly but me I dodged and punched it.:( Granted that may have saved me from being but by the dog. But obviously that reaction isn't good for a harmless snake. So, what I'm scared of, is potentially smacking her/dropping her, etc. I wonder if gloves would help me feel less 'in danger'? I know I'm not in danger, I can't help but worry, mostly for her sake! Recently she struck(I was being stupid, she's not an aggressive snake) and I flung her off me.:( Thankfully it was only a 1ft drop as I was sitting in the floor. But she was clearly afraid after that. Not sure what to do.:/
Im thinking about getting my first snake and was wondering how do i handle it if it gets on my neck and constricts my neck a little to tight
Would you recommend a snake hook?
It doesn't hurt!
This video is very helpful! I’m still scared to pick up my ball python a bit, but I’ll try my best to get used to it.
Uuh update me…how’s it been?
So how is it?
@@Sleepy2.oo0 i’ve gotten so much better with holding her! She’s just a chill gal
so the first ball python i had was great everything was fine but one day when i went to reach in his enclosure he tried to strike at me twice!! I believe it may been because he was hungry but it made me highly afraid and i traded him for another one which i sort of regret because it was only one time but besides that we had a good relationship. So when i got my new one i didnt really handle it like at all, some months have passed and i still havent handled him not once, i pet him from time to time but i can never tell if the s shape of his neck is to strike or not...but i wanna build a relationship with my snake now so what can i do?
I am like in the same situation, please let us know how it goes!
Let's play a little chase around the tank when their flighty. I really think the only help you can get is handle the snake and get a bit or two and see that it's not as bad as you think. No way around it.??? Thanks!!!
Please more tips. My father's dad was a breeder years ago well he is a truck driver and I am the one taking care of 5 snakes a red tegu and runs of fish
Also never unwrap a snake from its upper body always start with the tail and unwind them
Just got my first ball python 🐍 on Sunday man ! She’s so calm when I pick her up, but this video had a lot of information I was looking for thank you bro ! Appreciate it ! I have a question should I leave my red light on all day ?! Or just durning the day ?!
Are you referring to your heat lamp? It would most likely need to be left on 24/7 to keep the temps up, but your setup may be different than someone else's
@@SNKELTD yes my heat lamp , do I need something else besides the heat lamp , when I bought my ball python on Sunday , the owner of the shop said that’s all I needed , is that true or would I need something else so I can go buy for her
@@Dabears1986 personally id get a ceramic bulb and leave it on all the time (pure heat no light) as ball pythons are noctural so you dont want light at night time I currently have a 3 year old female ball python,a corn snake and a Brazian rainbow boa and hopefully in the next few weeks a durmeis boa. good luck with your scale baby
Thank you so much for this video. We just got our first ball python. She's about a year old and very chill. We are in the first week and giving her time to acclimate. While changing her water today, I realized I don't have a great angle to pick her up from. I don't want to scare her in any way. The t shirt idea is awesome! Thank you for your videos 🥰
How about taking my ny new bp out of his aquarium using hooks first? He’s in a 10 gallon aquarium. Got him this Monday, it’s been 5 days. Only 2 months old
What do you suggest for my Diamond Carpet Python that likes to kisses? She loves to bite and squeeze for anything warm and moving!
I was bit by a friends snake after i had been holding him for 20 minutes. Now, over a year later, i am scared to handle my own snake. He has never been aggressive but i just can’t bring myself to pick him up most of the time😭 he used to vibe with me everyday and I’m sad we lost that bond. But i want it back! Thanks for the vid
I try to not get bit all the time! But picking them up and the approach are 90% of the battle.
great advice! We have a 4 month old corn, does anyone have any advice for picking up a very active snake? Shes constantly running from us so it’s not a simple as just scooping her up?
Omg I'm not the only one. Today I's the first day I can handle him after feeding and I'm all of a sudden I'm scared 😱 😅 But was fine in the shop when I bought him
Just got my ball python last night 😂😂
Needed this video. I own two and i am so comfortable with my first one, terrified of the second. 😅
You got this!
@@SNKELTD Watched an hour long show together last night lol! I’m not scared anymore. ❤️
Awesome! They really are gentle once they get comfortable with you
Hopefully someone sees this but I got two new snakes a day ago the male is perfectly fine I have four other snakes and have owned over the course of 6years never been bitten well I wanna get them adjusted to me the guy had only had them for two weeks when I went to take out the female to let her kinda warm up to me she struck didn’t make contact but it scared me and I immediately put her up how should I go about this process seeing as it’s new to me having a potentially scared/hostile snake she’s a pretty good size too and bigger than all four of my current ones including the male I got with her
Is there a way that I can buy one from you that is tamed? Because I am scared to pick one up and scared when I have it in my hands
Yes. There are definitely ball pythons that have better temperaments than others
Good bless you for what you do
can you do a video of how to get a young new snake more comfortable with you handling it and how often you should handle it? I have a young pied and he/she doesn't unball when held and I feel like its a comfort issue. I myself am a bit nervous when my snake does this and I wonder if my nervousness contributes to the snake or if I'm doing everything ok and its just going to take the snake more time to relax being held. I usually only hold it for 10 min at most maybe once a day when its been long enough after feeding. (never struck at me but stays tense all the time)
so I got a snake under a week ago and I'm just looking for tips haha. I don't want to piss my snake off and make it impossible to pick him up. if he's trying to take my fingers off as a little snack should I just keep going and pick him up or just leave him to do him? just looking to give this guy the best life I can haha. and when I say tips I don't mean just for picking him up I mean like anything snake that would be good to know as a first time snake dad lol. oh and he's a banana arroyos ball python but I'm pretty sure he's actually a coral glow and he's a little guy haha
Great information 👍🏻
Thx!
The s shape don't always mean it's gonna strike
Thank you so much. Just got 2 babies and the BH fm is jumpy
I was trying to pick up my new ball python. I grabbed her at the wrong side and scared her. I had waited all day for her to come back out and now she's just hiding again. I feel so bad, is she going to be afraid of me now?
I had a ball python bite my eye, I believe she thought it was food because I had just removed her eye caps and she maybe seen the white of my eye and thought it was a mouse
Do you use heating pads ?
Yep, all of the racks have heat built in
THE MUSCLES ON SNAKES ARE REALLY MUSCULAR
did u say their names?
How soon after your snake feeds, can you safely handle them without stressing them out to the point where they regurgitate?
Most people say 24 hrs.
Is there a best time during the day to get the snake out? I am definitely scared of my snake 😅, He is around 11 months old, He has hissed & stricken at my phone once. So that makes me even more scared.
Thank you for this video. My baby snake doesn’t try to strike, but rather flees to other areas of the aquarium. I have not been able to pick my snake up, yet, because as soon as I touch it, it darts away. Any suggestions? I’ve only had it for two weeks.
Time and patience. I've had my tegu for 18 months, and he's just now comfortable with me picking him up and petting him
Great video and informative 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I’m having a really hard time with my startle reflex , I’ve tossed my bp across the room twice now . The first time was a feeding response and she latched on and I reacted and flung my hand back with her attached and she went flying , just now I was holding her and she strikes at my other hand and I flung her again! Idk what to do , I’m not even thinking when I do it I just happens it’s like I have no control over it , and it’s making me think I should rehome her for her safety
If you can't overcome the knee jerk reaction, you can't keep it. It's not fair to the snake, and you will eventually hurt the animal if you haven't already
@@SNKELTD that’s what I’m thinking too, I might have to rehome her , she does great handling , I think the two times she stuck was my fault , the first time I dropped a mouse In her enclosure and went to grab it and the second i had my hand in front of her when I pulled her out at night and the room was really dark. So it was completely my fault . I’m hoping maybe I can improve my handling to where she won’t ever strike again. Or maybe get a glove? Maybe that would help
@@SNKELTD do you have any tips to overcome it ? Did you start out in the hobby with no reaction at all? Or did it come with time
@@SNKELTD the advice I’m telling myself is just stop being a bitch it’s not gonna kill you but that doesn’t seem to be working
Noone likes getting bit, but I've never had a reaction to yeet the snake across the room while holding it. Lol
But every time that happens, it's reinforcing your snake's behavior to be defensive
Do you also have holes in the back of your tubes? If so how many and how does it holds humidity? Does your snakes shed correctly? I'm only asking because I just got my VE-6 rack and I been letting it run for the last three days and there is a lot of Condensation building up on the sides. I'm also using repti chip as my substrate.
No holes in the back. Your substrate is either too wet or you have too few holes if their's condensation. Maybe a combo of both. I try to have the Reptichip made days or weeks ahead of time to make sure it's pretty dried out. You can always add water to it in the tub if it's too dry
@@SNKELTD You are absolutely right. Just squeeze a piece of the reptichip and water came out. I have the reptichip sitting in tubes now with a fan blowing over it. Hope this helps to dry it out some. From now on out I will let it dry out for about a week before using it. You should do a in depth video on the VE-tubes. I know you have a few already but all the videos I've watch doesn't state how many holes and where you should put the holes in the tubes. This will help beginners like me to try and get an understanding on how to control the humidity, but all and all I enjoy your videos and there are extremely informational. I watched a few with my youngest son and he was blown away how you have your kid in them. Now he wants to make UA-cam videos with me😂😎🙏
Great bonding experience!
Wow you got people who are scated of snakes watching honestly i dont know why im watching
I have a 4 month old royal python She been fine till tonight and when I put her back I her viv she striked at me 2 times anything u can advise please

I never been scared of snakes and I buy a ball python now and I don’t know how to handle him because idk I have touch him but not pick him up he is not aggressive or anything but idk I’m not scared but im not able to
how often should you handle a new snake?
If it's eating for you probably as often as you like
Bro awesome video Thnkz!!!!!!!!
This my second snake and I’m nervous to hold him because my first snake a 5ft carpet python accidentally but me and I was bleeding g so much
Who else is watching snake videos just for entertainment knowing they are never going to own one 😂
Thank you! You've shared important info for beginners here. But please if you are afraid of a snake please don't get it.
I've had a few snakes. The ball pythons I had were never aggressive, most wanted out to visit daily. I did have a Burmese at one point (14 ft) and she was always a perfect lady. She lives at the Pottawatomie zoo now, Too big to care for properly. I didn't purchase her but was placed in my care. The boas once mature were aggressive and the only snake bites I've ever had. Folks need to know Boas are for a more experienced person.
I got a african house snake for my first snake and he came with some stuck shed and wasn't handled before and anytime i go to pick him up or even get my hand near him he starts darting in 50 different directions and idk what to do
I don't want to scare him or grab him too hard cause he is quite small
I believe those are colubrids. And colubrids are a whole different thing with handling than pythons and boas. By nature they are a bit more flighty. I can't even touch one of my rat snakes or milk snake. But my other rat snake and king snake are the friendliest snakes I have
Bite, LOL
he wants to move around and play!!!
As my snake is growing (she's gone from 51g to 550+g) I get more nervous to handle her.
So I tried putting a shirt over her head and she buried her face under her wut do I do now? lol idk
