Excellent review of a wonderful movie! Thank you! And I agree that the practical effects are great. I am very disappointed that CGI has replaced practical effects to such a large degree in modern filmmaking.
I completely agree. I grew up watching Tyrone Power and Guy William's Zorro and this is right up there with them. The Mask of Zorro is a great throw back to those films. Great Video. Cheers!
I hadn't watched either of those versions since I was a kid, so not long ago I re-watched 'The Mark of Zorro' and began the Disney series as well. Guy Williams is a great Zorro, but it's his portrayal of Diego that is so perfect to me. The feigned innocence, his big grin, he was fantastic casting. And after revisiting the Tyrone Power film, I have to add the climactic duel to the list of greatest swordplay ever on film. His and Basil Rathbone's fight has to be one of the fastest paced I've ever seen. Thanks for your comment!
So there is a new Zorro show on prime it’s really good it has the feel of all the other Zorro’s that have come before it’s a must watch it’s 10 episodes it’s amazing I binged it the first night and now I’m showing my sister and she loves it. I can’t wait for season 2
id like to sincerely thank you for this review! id had the movie on watchlist for a while, and a couple months ago i finally watched it for the first time, in years i dont remember watching it as a kid, wasnt sure if i actually had or not, and yet there was something so familiar about it, by the end, i had this sense that id seen it, i remember it through a hazy fog, but i certainly have ive watched it too many times since, its truly fantastic youve mentioned the things i adore about it better than i could, aswell as explained what i like about it but dont have the knowledge nor words to say, edit: the bit with zorro not wearing his mask, the people will forever carry his secret gave me chills, and hell! i wondered but wasnt sure if the explosion was real i too get unreasonably excited for the z flamed in the field, the score is amazing, the scene after alejandro lost his brother is gorgeous, the swordfighting, the banter, the humor and the dedication to craft in this movie (both within and in the creation of it) is just something else, and im so glad to find more people talking about it, ive yet to finish the credits, partly cause im not ready for the song, perhaps not ready to end it, truly, but this time around i will, i have to say your retrospective might be my favourite ive seen, so thank you!
Wow, thank you so much for your comment! It's so great hearing from another fan of this movie. Since watching it last, I've gone back and rewatched 1940's 'The Mark of Zorro', and 'The Legend of Zorro', and started the Disney series from the 1950s. All of these have great Zorro moments, but 'The Mask of Zorro' is the only one that I'd call a perfect movie. There's something so special that all came together for this one.
ive yet to see 'the mark of zorro' but definitely planning to! have you thought of making reviews on those aswell? id actually be very interested in hearing about the progression of the character and various adaptations
I watched 'The Mark of Zorro' right after 'The Mask of Zorro', so I'm a little far removed to do a proper review, but it's a really fun movie, and you can trace the origins of several great moments from the later movie to it. The confessional scene in 'The Mask of Zorro' definitely draws inspiration from one scene in particular. And Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone's climactic duel is incredible. Perhaps a video comparing several of these other adaptations would be good, there are a couple others out there that I don't remember seeing.

Thank you! Revisiting a movie like this one is such a breath of fresh air amongst the ones that come out today.
