Mission Impossible 7 and the Case for Tom Cruise
Always wonderful to see you! I think I have to watch Death on the Nile again!
Thank you!
I love Frances de la Tour in everything I've ever seen her in! Have you seen the Lewis with David Soul (of course he gets murdered early on)?
That is one series I have never seen, I'm thinking Death on the Nile is probably the most recent thing I've watched David Soul in.
The Poirot series aired on a Sunday evenings here in the UK, if memory serves. I convinced my mother to let me stay up late to watch it, even though at the time it was just an excuse not to go to bed. It would become a favourite, though. Same scenario for the ITV Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series. I'm sure my mother thought I wanted to become a detective.
Thanks for sharing! I was first introduced to the Poirot series at around age 5, and I've loved it ever since.
Excellent review and analysis. Thank you! 👍
Thanks so much!
I hated the ending that they gave Rosalie. She has been through so much having an alcoholic parent and the ending in the book was so hopeful with her getting a new positive maternal presence. Tim gets the chance to mature and Mrs. Allerton to let go of her jealousy towards Joanna and her fear of losing her son. Instead, we get a cheap joke and the trope that a mother's boy is always gay. Every time I think about watching this one again, I remember that and wind up not watching it. Although, I love the ending and Poirot's heartbreak.
Jenny Seagrove was the director Michael Winner’s girlfriend at the time
Is your intro music The Avengers TV theme?!
Good review
Great review
I think Columbo makes up children, cousin's, Uncles and Brother's In-law to suit what ever narrative he needs to insinuate into. The only thing for sure is that there is a Mrs. Columbo, he has a dog named "Dog" and his first name is "Lieutenant".
Also noticed final Three Stooge Curly Joe DeRita as the bartender...
Today I stumbled upon this video, TG! I am the founder of the WWII Historical Re-enactment Society here in the USA. My life has been devoted to the study of that terrible war. In 2009 I made the pilgrimage to Germany, where my maternal grandparents came from. I speak of that visit and of Wurzburg within my book, A BRIDGE TO TIME, A Re-enactors Journey. (In fact the Alte Brucke is on the cover of my book, a watercolor by a British artist showing a GI on the bridge in 1945.) I describe a time when my grandfather had placed me on a lounge chair to take my infant photo. A time when 20th Century FOX was filming a war movie, DECISION BEFORE DAWN, in Wurzburg. Filmed five years after that war the ruins was still quite evident. That film is among my favorite WWII movies. As I entered the palace I took note of the pock marks caused by US bullets wondering if any had been made by my mother who made .30 & .50-caliber ammunition at the St. Louis Army Ammunition Plant while dad was in the service. Stepping inside the grand lobby, I was overcome by the sense that I had been there before- impossible. I shrugged it off. One month later, after returning home, I again saw DECISION BEFORE DAWN, after a lapse of some thirty years. The Great Hall and staircase is but one feature of the film.
Thanks for the interesting review. Guess this 50s flick is pretty much Fox studio chief Darryl F Zanuck's version of "Dudley Do Right'.
6 of those 8 could be considered a great episode. The show was clicking on all cylinders by this time.
Ariadne O - not the character as such, but Zoe Wanamaker's portrayal of her I love. Branagh, to me, oozes offensively self-inflated ego. His facial hair shrieks "Look at me" pulling us out of the movies.
This was one of the few movies I owned as a kid, cause I loved it that much. I watched it sooo many times, and to this day, am still not tired of it! Great review.
Regarding his wife and his family he references, I always liked the idea that they don’t exist. He uses it to lull his suspect into a false sense of security so he can sting them with a question or fact. Most likely Mrs Columbo does exist because she is referenced by other characters throughout the series but I don’t think kids ever are. Or anyone else.
It’s a real shame Vincent Price never got a murderer turn on the show. Missed opportunity
Tony Curtis seemed like the obvious killer since he was the only other "big" star outside of Peter Ustinov
Laughton was "assisting the execution" at the end he was highlighting the knife with his monocle.
Just watched it for the first time in Xmas 2024, very good movie with an amazing last 15 minutes
I’m loving to watch these reviews, even if I don’t agree w all of them :) As for the Christian characters being portrayed as bad, while that annoys me as well, I gotta say Poirot’s religion is very explored and his Catholicism played up in the later series, so I’d say it’s not that anti Christian, since the main character (who we’re supposed to like) is a Christian himself. Happy Holidays!
great review.the most underrated john wayne western!!
There are several good westerns like Hondo, Hombre, Red River, The Big Country, and Shane, to name a few. But this movie Warlock is one of those great western movies that is seldom mentioned. Pieces of the Earp's and the Cowboys are embedded, like the massacre of the Mexicans by the cowboys, the relation of Wyatt and Doc, Doc Holidays involvement with a stage holdup, and the Buntline specials gifted to Earp.
Yay-- my favorite UA-cam movie reviewer is back! Loved the connections to scenes in other films. Regarding the novel, it's interesting that Hitchcock changed the meaning of the code words,"the 39 steps" from the original story. Not sure if it was his or his writers' idea, but I found it to be a rather silly letdown when the meaning is revealed in the movie.
I'm very much looking forward to finding out the real meaning from the book. Thanks very much!
So glad to see you back!! Merry Christmas to you, too!
Thank you!
Great to see you are back! Highly recommend "The Lady Vanishes" as your next British Hitchcock. You will love Charters and Caldicott😄 (well, who doesn't?).
That is another big one I'm looking forward to. Thank you!
I was fortunate to see "The 39 Steps" and "The Lady Vanishes" on a double feature at our local cinema years ago.
Glad to see you back.
Thank you!
Glad you're back with a new review! Whether it's something I've already seen or something to add to my watch list, I always enjoy your reviews . Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much!
Good to see you again! I enjoyed your review and all the comparisons.
Thanks very much!
Welcome back!!
Thank you!
So happy you’re back!!! I only recently discovered your channel and I love it! Please keep the reviews coming!
Thanks so much, I'm glad you've been enjoying the reviews!
I haven’t seen Trapped but have seen 39 Steps. The remakes are both available on UA-cam as well.
Glad to see you’re back! Hope to see more reviews from you soon!
Thank you!
New to your channel. Will you return to release more reviews?
I watched it because of you, thank you for the recommendation I loved it. I agree the Deborah and Brad storyline is the weakest. Most annoying part of the movie is Thelma Ritter isn't credited
Colin Firth was, is, and will forever be, a HEARTTHROB!!! He was the perfect Mr. Darcy!
Hastings disappeared from Poirot’s life for a long time, after he married and moved to South America to run his ranch. He does return in the final Poirot book, “Curtain”.
I’m new to your channel, but I’ve subscribed and have watched a half dozen or so today. I love Columbo, Poirot, Christie, film noir and 40s movies in general. Keep them coming, please. I will be watching more later. Thank you!
Excellent breakdown and analysis of one of my favorite westerns. Thanks for doing this!
I miss your reviews! I hope you're okay!
I found this film a great disappointment. There's no denying the talent involved in the making of the film but the plot is ridiculous, the characters are unrealistic, unfunny and irritating, and the moral of the story is trite. I came expecting Capra brilliance but soon realised that I was watching a turkey. I stayed with it out of a sense of duty but could not recommend it.
Pretty nice review of a film I've loved since it was first on TV--but did you actually do a lengthy review of "Mirage" without mentioning the fantastic score by young Quincy Jones?
Sorry, no fan of Double Shock. Mrs Peck is irritating. Dagger of the Mind is one of worst ever Columbo episodes. My ranking is as follows: A Stitch in Crime The Most Crucial Game Etude in Black Requiem for a Falling Star The Greenhouse Jungle The Most Dangerous Match Double Shock Dagger of the Mind
Very good, though Ransom for a Dead Man was actually a pilot and not officially part of season one. Anyway, that said, my ranking would be: Suitable for Framing Death Lends A Hand Murder by the Book Ransom for a Dead Man Blueprint for Murder Short Fuse Lady in Waiting Dead Weight
On you tube now. Thanks for intel. 🎉
Of these All-Star mysteries, this is on the low end, but there is some fun to be had as when one actress has reason to engage in “bad acting”
thank you!! this is very useful for my film studies course, i was confused about the movie in some parts. I also loved sonia!
John Randolph is also in "Seconds," as is "Lady in Waiting's" victim Richard Anderson
Myrna Loy is wonderful in "The Best Years of Our Lives," too.
