The History of British Racing Green in Motorsport

- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- Thanks to the return of Aston Martin and the team adopting a new look following the takeover of the former Racing Point team, the iconic British racing green returns to Formula 1.
From Aston Martin to Lotus, British racing teams have been notoriously well-known and considerably successful racing under the British racing green. But why is green associated as the distinctive colour of motor racing in the UK, and how did it naturally become the established norm?

Brabham's cars were in Australian colours of Green and Gold. Yes they are similar but also distinct. The green of Brabham's cars were the same green as the Cricket teams baggy green cap.
That 2000 Jaguar was so beautiful.
With the history of a variety of greens being British racing green ,I see no problem with Astons colour . If you pinned it down to one specific colour who's would you choose ? . Any "British" racing team that chooses a deep green, be it metallic, pearlescent or a solid can make a valid claim to racing in BRG
1:10 no wonder Electric scooters are so illegal in UK, forbid if it goes even more than 15 mph! Damn you can peddle faster.
You are actually allowed to do more than 15mph these days but with the traffic it's not always possible. The scooters are downright dangerous, with the size of those wheels and the state of our roads I wouldn't use one if you paid me, there will be a lot of deaths before the genie goes back in the bottle.
@@philspencelayh5464 A lot of things are dangerous in life, even skateboarding, tons of injuries and even fatal accidents specially when not wearing helmets. And well on the roads or on side of the roads, no matter if you are pedestrian or a cyclist or you name it, it is extremely dangerous, because a lot of people in big metal boxes feel safe and don't care much about others around, specially big vehicles, buses and trucks, every year these big vehicles kill tons of people, on sidewalks, crosses and so on. Infrastructures need to change, and more so in certain countries because it is extremely outdated as also mentality of a lot of people, who don't want or accept any change.
@@TheChazas They are doing trial in Newcastle, near where I life. You can hire an electric scooter but must have a diving licence and use it on roads or cycle tracks in a designated trial area. I was riding through that area when I saw two of these scooters being used. On the side of the road was a shared cycle track and footpath about 25-30 feet wide which I was using on my bike, on the other side of the road was a busy narrow footpath which is not a cycle track which is what the scooters were using, forcing their way through the pedestrians. The scooters require no input from the user so are just motorbikes and have no place amongst pedestrians and as long as selfish people use them the trial won't succeed and just cause resentment to responsible users. They have already had to disable them after 10 PM as drunks were using them to get home.
@@philspencelayh5464 there will always be irresponsible people and how they behave, no matter what you are using an electric scooter, bicycle or a car, license or not, you can not use any of them intoxicated. Same as for most scooter users, most accidents and random, reckless (diving between people, flying into streets and crosses) driving comes from rental scooter users and not from people who own one, who wear helmets, additional safety gear, reflective vests and ride responsibly, just like responsible cyclist or anything else. Also as for speed, I constantly pass rental, ebikes, scooters or Xiaomi owners on bike lanes via bicycle while peddling at 20mph, so in that sense 15 mph scooters are not even attractive to me, while I can peddle faster, yet I don't see them as viable for kids below 16 or irresponsible individuals, specially thinking that it is good transport while intoxicated, yet it does not stop some from driving a car too.
@@TheChazas there is your (our) problem we have even had instances of underage unlicensed kids getting their hands on those things and riding them down the motorway, just imagine how messy that could get. The scooter offers nothing that we don't already have plus the scope to do immense harm.
So it should be called Irish Racing green
No
Thanks for bringing up that Aston racecars have that neon green stripe. That makes the pink stripe on the F1 car, make sense other than just to keep BWT happy..
Fascinating! Best video in this channel in a long time!
paint probably started in the can then the paint gun then the car boom i win
Nah mate, it started as some water and a bit of other chemicals
@Mylo Kurtz thanks man thats all i really wanted
Totally skipped the part where they explained the shade was based on/the same as one of their old racers green which is why they chose it... pretty sure they covered it at launch.
Thanks ^^
I think the British Racing Teal and fluorescent green Aston Martin have gone with for all their merchandise is a good looking color scheme and a cool proprietary spin on the classic BRG and yellow combo. Swapping the lighter green for pink on the actual car isn't as good, but honestly looks a lot better than I expected.
Love the colour, it matches the DBR1, DBR4 and the DB9 that won Le Mans, it’s the Aston Martin signature green
I know Jordan were Irish not British, but the team was based in the UK, and the first and possibly most famous Jordan (191) was green. Worth a mention?
Aston Martin is working out of Jordan's team factory in Silverstone UK, , factory is directly across the road from the Silverstone track
Everyone: british racing green
Mclaren and Williams: wtf
McLaren was founded by a Kiwi and he made his colour Orange. William's has no excuse except for the fact that Frank's cars have almost always had some blue on them.
@@screaminlead Willams used green and white from 1978 and 1982, bc saudi sponsors. Nothing to do with british racing green.
No requirement to use BRG Aston do it because their racing history is richer historically than those and McLaren was founded by Bruce who was a Kiwi.
Although not a big fan of green coloured car, metallic green of caterham look amazing
Good job guys, finally upped The Race guys❤️
TIL Gordon Bennet was an actual person and not just something we exclaim when frustrated or annoyed
GORDON BENNETT!! How fascinating!
drinking game: take a shot every time he says british racing green
*am ded
I am just very underwhelmed with the colour choice, the pink accents doesn’t help either.
I was really wanting a green reminiscent of their DBR1 Le Mans winner with the lime green pinstripe, that would’ve looked soooooo good
The green has been altered to match with the BWT pink, while still be viable as a consumer color
No its the green from the DBR1, they said so in the launch
Astons Green and Yellow are great. But that pink HAS TO GO
I say the way they implemented the pink and the green is amazing, considering the many concept art by many designers that were just bad
@@shianeruu4359 Honestly I don't mind it in that shade of pink strip but the lack of continuity between the teams clothing and the cars it getting on my nerves.
The neon yellow should have been kept. Even if they had to use both use it like an alternating wave and use the neon yellow accents to help break up the darker shades a bit. Astons implementation feels weak and last minute, perhaps because it is.
I humbly dispute your version of the history of BRG. Gordon Bennett did indeed instigate the world race series whereby each nation participated under a 'colour'. Hence the Germans chose silver, French chose blue etc. The story goes that by the time the British decided to enter, blue, white & red were already allocated. As the beautiful people we are, the Irish, who could not afford to enter racing, kindly offered the British Team the use of our colour, Green (which we had registered in time ahem). The British team gratefully accepted our offer and there was born the now famous British Racing Green. You are most welcome, 'top of the day to ye' ;) 😉👍🚙
Germany chose white not silver. Mercedes accidentally ended up with silver, after they forget to account for the weight of the paint, and then run their cars unpainted in polished aluminium, which looks silver. Their driver Manfred von Brauchitsch is credited for the idea. You are most welcome 😉
@@justmy-profilename Spot on! 'Great Profilename', the minute I started to read your reply more memory flooded back 😊 I had forgotten that, I knew between a few of us we would get to the bottom of it eventually! 😂🤣 Thanks for the input, stay safe etc and kind regards, Damien.
Regardless of it being british racing green, the colour on the aston martin car looks beautiful. I don't like the yellow details on the aston martin GT cars, so a bit of luck with the sponsorship i guess, because the pink details on the f1 car looks great aswell!
Love the color on the brz..going to paint my 370z the color soon
Autosport are really devoid of ideas now. Even when they do a "technical" review of each team's cars for 2021 - there's barely any technical information!
There's a reason why "The Race" now have 500K subscribers and Autosport is now at the back of the grid....
@@johnsmith1474 Maybe it was harsh John, but Autosport used to be THE place to get the best and most detailed F1 news. But it's just gone to pot - it's like The Beano have branched out into motorsport and started posting on UA-cam.
But the race always focuses on bad things when its about f1 not technical information
@@left8138 But the quality of presentation, professionalism, and the information given on The Race is just FAR better. That's why they're already over 500K subscribers and have left Autosport well-behind in the dust somewhere.
@@grantchallinor5263 I agree their presentation is nice but I wish they will post a video saying something positive
er, you do know that "The Race" is part of Autosport too. That's the whole point of a dedicated racing channel. But you're right, Autosport videos are generally just fluff
Several teams ran in BRG before Cooper - including Vanwall which won the first Constructor's Championship, Brabham's Cooper was the first to win the Driver's Championship. Brabham's team however, ran in Australian Green and Gold livery and thus is not BRG.
British racing green was actually locomotion green being that steam was Britain biggest source of pride at the time & red, white & blue was taken. This dark green was used in 1901/2 & the auto club of uk then adopted emerald green in respect to the Irish hosting the races.
The race wasn't held in Ireland due to the speed limit either as Ireland was Britain in 1903 & the same rules applied. The law could be changed anywhere but Ireland had the perfect layout & could get approved much easier.
There was also 9 places in England capable of holding races in 1903, 3 of which similar to Irelands layout but on private land & Other smaller circuits like bexhill & crystal palace from 1901.
In my mind the Bentleys of the 1920s and the Vanwalls later on are British Racing Green. The Aston Martin looks a bit insipid but I am sure it will look fantastic if it starts to win races. If its to transfer to the road cars the old Bentley colour would look much better.
Looks fine.
That’s sir jack thanks mate
For the record, Aston Matrin themselves (around the time of their livery launch) called their green Aston Martin Green, as it's different to traditional British Racing Green.... but as racing green is a loose term, as you say, and every team uses a different shade, maybe my comment is mute. (Great video by the way)
It's definitely racing green, not as saturated as the old lotus cars, but still racing green none the less.
Fun fact, that map for 1903 is wrong. Ireland was part of the UK, So they were still racing in the United Kingdom.
A great green the same shade ish as the winning 1959 Le Mans car👍
What is paint code for that 2021 f1 aston ??
I love the green. It's the hideous pink stripe we need to talk about.
Nah i like it
I might have preferred it lime but still
Fastest watermelon we've ever seen haha 😄
I wonder how people at AMR started off at Jordan?
British Racing Green, YES!
It’s a Dacia Sandero color option, that’s how
*Captain Slow has entered the chat*
as a german, that car looks beautiful
@Mr G yea .....
@Mr G thats racist bro
@@thristq pierre 🅱️asly
That is as far removed from pastel green as possible. Pastel green is much lighter. There is a pastel green BRM in the Museum at Silverstone, bloody gorgeous 😍
I chose BRG for my new 1971 MGB.
Yes
They said that it is the green off the DBR1 in the launch
You forgot the DBR4, the DBR5 and the Lotus 79-Lotus 80 of 1979 ...
Aston will beat McLaren this season
I think the car is superior but the McLaren driver lineup is much better, so in my opinion they won't (like last season).
@@danielebortoliero5662 much better 😭😭😭😭😭
Not to be “that guy,” but the final Constructor’s tally had McLaren beating Racing Point by 7 points. If the 15 points for illegal brake ducts weren’t FIA’ed away, RP would have finished in 3rd.
@@leumas75 Yeah but if Racing Point didn't just copy Mercedes they would not be close to McLaren
Its an Aston, it's Green, its British. GO Race!
It says if they managed to have silver shine through the green I think that all offer good color flop we’re on track in different weather conditions
1:15 really sounds like you said legal rather than illegal lol
Hilarious that something so ingrained in British history comes from Ireland. Always wondered if could be to be honest
Other places said green teams normally have poor performance 😂
Fortunately they got rid of that pink, that was literally a kick in the eye
Horrendously incorrect, at around 2:45 he says Cooper were the first... Vanwall and others in the 1950s seem to be forgotten? Such as Moss' green Massi and Jaguar at Le Mans.
Also, the reason why Brabham was rscing green and gold is because thats the Australian motorsport racing colours, showing their historical link to the UK with a point of difference.
Also Williams raced in British Racing Green and white up until 1984....
If it's a British Racing Team car, and the car is painted green, the car is British Racing Green!
Where is Vanwall?
The aston martin is the best looking f1 car on the grid (we'll wait for ferrari)
I already know it's colour
@@goodboy4129 no way
Nah, the Alfa Romeo looks the best
I like the Alpine the best. I whish they went for a more traditional livery for the Aston.
@@skipper2016 Bruh fr don't tell anyone (it's .....
You think I'm stupid enough to tell you?)
Gordon Bennett, Rodney!!!
the 2022 car would look so good in lime green
I must have this model car 😁😁😁
that colour shade is not dark enough to be called british racing green
is that where the English get the saying "Gordon Bennet" from? 🤣
MEANING: interjection: Expressing surprise, puzzlement, incredulity, annoyance, etc. ETYMOLOGY: The expression is primarily used in the UK even though Gordon Bennett was an American. ... The term Gordon Bennett alludes to his wild ways, and perhaps originated as a euphemism for gorblimey.
and you thought it was from Tony Hart's landlord.
What about Jordan F1?
Aston Martin 1959 racing green. Enuff said
You skipped Jordan F1 ! That was green.
Vanwall?
Did they forget Aston Martin has been racing with Red Bull the past few years?? 'Nooo that was just a sponsorship', Well yes, but so is this. Aston Martin is NOT in F1, just like Alfa-Romeo is NOT in F1 and neither was Lotus when they worked from Enstone. A manufacturer is only 'in' F1 if they actually applied their infrastructure to create and run the team. The Silverstone infrastructure is not owned by Aston Martin nor does Aston Martin have ANY technological influence. They are, again, just a name sponsor. The fact that Stroll owns the team and has a controlling stake in AM because he bought 25% with a consortium, does NOT make this one organization.
It will be though, renault and merc bought other teams, this will be the same.
@@dereklush9399 No, Merc and Renault make their own engine and the companies themselves are responsible for the infrastructure en getting in on level. Aston Martin has zero organizational ties to the F1 team. They wouldn't even be able to afford it. Don't forget last year the were about to go bankrupt which was how Stroll was able to grab 25%.
If Aston Martin goes bankrupt, nothing changes the team, if Mercedes and Renault fall away, the teams are done.
@@djoetma bro the same person is in charge of both. Zero organizational ties? Are you kidding? Also if daimler doesn't even own a controlling interest in the F1 team. If it goes bankrupt the team just goes back to being Brawn GP or whatever the hell else. Same with Renault, it's only owned the team five years! Or are you the only person on earth who's clio was built in Enstone? F1 teams get bought and sold and rebranded all the time. That's just how it works
@@dereklush9399 That Stroll is in charge of both doesn't matter. Or do you think his Canadian ventures are part of the team as well? The Ferrari dealership in Toronto is part of Aston Martin now?
There was actually money from Renault going to Enston, they used the engine from Viry and the infrastructure that was completely degrated under Genii (who used the Lotus name) and Renault rebuild everything. They basically bought back the same infrastructure they sold to Genii (they didn't own it for just 5 years) but now 5 years older and stuff like CFD licenses that was paid for, 200 people out of 600 were sacked while the other big teams had grown in staff. Also Fe ault build a new wind tunnel.
Stroll invested all the money in Racing Point, Aston Martin wasn't even part of the plans then. Aston doesn't have the money to make these investments, Stroll does and Stroll's money is not AM. And Stroll is not crazy. It's not like he's going to let AM own even a part of Racing Point since he made that investment. He only owns 25% with his consortium, so not even personally. Not even sure if he put in private equity.
The true British racing green is very dark. Whrn jag reinterred F1 it was considered too dark for Tv hence the brighter one we see now.
That’s an Aussie green an gold that Brabham donned. Same as the Australian Olympic team wears. Not British racing green, as you stated. Come on with the research mate.
Green race cars are always unlucky.
The proper Aston Martin colour would be Silver Birch.
I think that the Aston Martin (Irish) British racing green, looks nothing like a shamrock, but never the less looks most appealing...
should have been in wec
BRG or RGB ?
This should be a poll...😅
Answer: It’s Irish Racing Green
It was direct.
Bentley had a 'slightly deeper shade of green'?
I would call that military olive drab, or looking again: simply BROWN.
Yuk.
Um no, that's NOT "pastel" green.
No such colour. It's called Goodwood Green.
'Distinctive' Gold Leaf Lotus.
Ehh yes, yuk again.
They could do better.
In motorcycle racing green is considered an unlucky colour. 🤷🏻♂️
It's an uninspiring livery, though still better than the Williams tropical fish livery.
not a aston martin half the car made by mercedes has mercedes engine
So do the road cars
You must be ignorant to think it's a green mercedes
It’s just green , media giving too much hype on making it British. Soon enough they’ll rename f1 to British Racing!
Where did it all start?.....Easy one. They copied Mercedes did a good job of it and Astin jumped on a good thing.....even if they have cheated
If they had 12 months to pick a green and then took that shit colour I'm out
The Aston Martin F1 car is one of the ugliest on the grid this year. It's definitely not British racing green. The color is as close to blue as it is to green.
British Racing Green? Not so much.
Really anticipated the return of the more '60s kind of green. This feels way to 'modern' for BR, especially with the pink details.
Bummer, since it makes the car way less attractive. It's a meh for me.
Saw better designs in a f1 game
AMR 21 s color is brilliant
