Very solid film. I've been getting more of my friends who I raced mx/sx with into F1 with me. You can really geek out over the technology and the drivers(some)are interesting characters. Plus F1 has it's own little soap opera just like other large professional sports. Anyway, I sent a link to your channel so my buddies are in the know and ready for the new season. Nice job, thumbs up and subbed now.
I feel like this video was a bit unstructured. Why not systematically work through the rules, the teams, the drivers and the regulations. Instead it is a bit here and there and jumps between topics
@@soholmgaming overall, tyre wear refers to the gradual wearing of the tyre through use under normal circumstances, where tyre degradation refers more specifically to defects that form in the tyres due to abnormal conditions, like blisters due to overheating, or flat spots due to lockups. Mostly though, these terms are used interchangeably and that's fine.
All you NEED to know to watch your first F1 race - main points in *bold* 1. *F1 is a multinational motor racing series that takes place across 22 races in 22 countries.* Each race has a different amount of laps (times you go around the track) but each race must be at least 305 kilometres long and can not last more than 2 hours. 2. *There are 10 teams, each with 2 drivers, making a total of 20 cars.* Both cars on each team have the same livery (the paint and stickers) except the number on the car is specific to each driver.i 3. *Drivers are competing to win the Driver's Championship, whilst the teams are competing to win the Constructors Championship.* 4. *Points are awarded to the drivers who finish in the top 10 at the end of each race.* The winner gets the most points while 10th place gets the least. The driver who gets the fastest lap during the race gets an extra 1 point, but they only get the point if they finish in the top 10. The points won by both drivers from each team are added together and go toward their team's points in the Constructors Championship. 5. At the end of the year, after all 22 races, *the driver with the most points wins the Drivers Championship* and the *team with the most points wins the Constructors Championship.* The driver who wins the Drivers Championship is also allowed to use the number 1 as their race number the following season. Money is awarded to teams depending on the order they finish in the championship, with the winner getting the most and last place getting least. (Some teams like Ferrari get "Historical payments" at the end of each year because they have been in the sport for so long.) 6. *"F1" is short for "Formula 1."* The formula is the set of regulations (like a recipe) that the teams have to follow when building their car. There are several different championships that use the formula system, such as F2 and F3. F1 is the pinnacle, fastest and most expensive of these. 7. *The position a driver starts each race in is decided by Qualifying.* This happens the day before a race. Drivers try and get the fastest time around the race track. Whoever is fastest gets to start the race from 1st position, this is known as Pole position. The second fastest driver starts in second and so on. 8. *Modern F1 cars are fitted with a DRS system to help them overtake.* The wings on the front and rear of F1 cars are like upside down airplane wings. Instead of pushing a plane in to the sky, they push the car in to the road, meaning it sticks to the road and can go round corners very fast. However, wings can act a bit like sails on a ship and slow a car down in a straight line because they catch all the air and add drag. All current F1 cars are fitted with a DRS (Drag Reduction System). When a driver uses DRS it makes one of the rear wings go horizontal, so it stops pushing the car in to the ground and is less draggy) which makes the cars go quite a bit faster in a straight line. At certain straight parts of each track there are 'DRS Zones' (between one and three of them depending on the track) where drivers can press a button to use their DRS to go even faster and try to overtake the person in front of them. However, they can only use their DRS if they are within 1 second of the person in front of them. DRS was added to F1 cars because it is hard for F1 cars to drive really close behind each other because of all the turbulent air coming off the car in front, so it can be very difficult to overtake the car infront. DRS helps get around this problem by making the car behind in a close fight slightly faster than the car in front. 9. *There are 7 types of tyres used in F1.* 5 of them are used when the track is dry. Then there is an "Intermediate" tyre for when the track is a little bit wet, and a "Wet" tyre for when the track is very wet. The 5 dry tyres vary from very soft to hard. Soft tyres make the car stick the road meaning the car can go it's fastest when using them. However soft tyres wear down quickly so they can't be used for very long. Hard tyres are the opposite, they arent as fast as the soft but they last longer. The different tyres are called "compounds," eg. The hard compound, the Soft compund, the Wet compound. 10. At each race Pirelli (the company who make all the tyres for F1) chose 3 of the 5 types of tyres that they think suit that specific race track. Some tracks make tyres wear quickly, some the opposite. *Every driver has to use two of the three types of tyres during a race.* This rule is cancelled if it is raining and teams have to put Wet or Intermediate tyres. 11. During races *flags are used by marshalls to communicate with drivers.* Marshalls are volunteers who stand next to the track to help make sure the race goes smoothly. There are a number of different flags, but the most common are: - *Yellow flag:* waved if there is an incident on track to warn drivers (for example if a piece of a car has broken off and is on the track.) When drivers see this they must slow down a little bit. If two yellow flags are waved by one marshall that means the incident is more severe and drivers should be extra careful. - *Green Flag:* these are waved when the track is clear to let drivers know that any previous incidents have been cleared up and they can return to normal racing speed. - *Red flag:* this means the race is being stopped (usually if there has been a particularly bad crash that will take a long time to clean up.) - *Blue flag:* this are waved at a driver if he is being "lapped" by a car that is ahead of him, telling him to let the driver behind past. Being "lapped" or "lapping" is when a driver is so fast they go all the way around the track and come back up behind slower cars who are actually behind them in the race. The slower cars are lapped when the fast car overtakes them. - *SC:* this stands for Safety Car. The Safety Car comes out if there is an incident on track that needs clearing up by Marshalls. It drives around the tack slowly, with all the F1 cars in a line behind it until the incident is cleared. Then it goes back in, and the driver in first position then decides when to start the race. - *Black flag:* waved at a driver telling them they are disqualified from the race. Is waved if they are driving dangerously or are causing danger to other drivers. - *Chequered flag:* this is waved at the end of the race to signify the race is now over. Once waved all cars must complete the lap they are on and then stop. 12. At the end of the race the *drivers who finish in 1st, 2nd and 3rd all go on to the podium* and receive trophies and a bottle of champaigne. The winner gets the biggest trophy and 3rd gets the smallest. Being in the top three is known as being "on the podium" and is a big deal to drivers and their teams. some drivers go their whole career and never get on the podium. I was like, "something's off about this F1 video" -- then I realised. It's the american accent. I'm not used to people talking F1 in an american accent...
CrankyYankeeF1 I don’t think its about that. I think its about the brits dominating F1. Be it technical teams or the fans at home that becomes youtubers. So your accent is unusual in this way, i would say.
@@FEARYOYOYO Last time I checked it was a German Team 1st (Based in Bracklyy, but German License and Constructor Co), Austrian Team 2nd, Italian Team 3rd (if legal);)), ... :p
Drive to survive on netflix got me into f1. Ive binged several 2019 grand prix’ over the past few days and its just exciting to watch 20 chaps risking their lives exceeding speeds of 320km for our entertainment.
I highly suggest watching the older seasons with the V10 cars. Those cars were just masterpieces. Watch the 2005 and 2006 seasons. The title fight between F1's two greatest drivers - Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. Schumacher had won 7 drivers titles, 5 in succession. Alonso and Renault came to challenge that domination. EPIC would be the word to describe those years. If you can only watch one race from that era, its the 2005 San Marino GP.
same here! my brother is into F1 and told me that I should watch the show. It took me a long time to start because I didn't think I would like it but I ended up loving it and watching both seasons in 3 days! Now I'm watching every video about F1 that I can find lol
Drive to Survive showed me all the drama that exists between the teams, drivers, etc. in Formula 1. It also introduced me to glory that is Guenther Steiner.
What a terrible show about Formula 1, more soap opera/reality TV than sport. Did not even cover Hamilton until the middle of the second season. Didn't interview his dad or showing his family like they did other drivers. Also tried to make it look like Hamilton was a reckless driver causing accidents. Total and complete disrespect. And to top it all off, focused way too much on that stupid egotistical Aussie driver and other second- and third-rate scrubs.
You are right it's called Dual Axis Steering....but there is technically only one axis. Weather the steering wheel is rotated about the axis or moved along the axis, there is only one axis. If CY wants to call it Dual Access Steering it's sort of makes sense too since now there are now two ways to access the steering of the wheels. Probably a small mistake on CY's part but still another great video!
Lets face it: Most of us here aren’t new F1 fans edit: since I’m somewhat wrong, I’m glad to see so many new fans! For those new fans: Please don’t limit your interest to only F1, there are some amazing high-level series, that are less well-known and that are struggling because of a decline in interest, and are struggling to attract manufacturers, like the DTM, WEC, and numeral regional/national touring car championships and GT championships. Let’s support those so we can enjoy a variety of motorports in the future!
Most of humans in the world aren’t new F1 fans? I mean that can’t be true haha. Most of my subs aren’t that’s correct. But I’ve got 134 videos for you with a few more coming in the next week :)
I am. Ive always been into it but honestly i haven't followed it as i would want. In the US this sport is not as popular so the hype is low. Glad netflix took on it. Hope that now it attracts more fans!
Imo we have Merc, Ferrari and RB as the front runner Then we have the midfield - RP, Mclaren, Renault, AT/TR Then (imo) Sauber/Alfa and Haas are kind of in a different (slower) class Then theres...well...Williams - in a another universe
@@gigasigma8373 Haas was bin-tier in 2019. It was a fast car in 2018 but the drivers (or Grosjean specifically) fucked up a lot. In 2019 the car was slow as hell.
Nice to see a fellow American making great F1 content. I'm the only F1 fan I know of but I'm sure I'll turn some of my friends eventually, that or they'll stop talking to mebe because of my F1 talk all the time hahah
You just got one more! I suppose with this community, a few thousand more haha. There's so many more to reach. one at a time, though :) welcome and nice to meet ya!
CYF1 did a brilliant job of trying to explain this sport and not lose people along the way... people often say " I don't see the fascination in watching cars go round and round in a circle then stop" and the only thing you can say is it's a highly technical sport with lots of tactics, much of which you don't even see on the screen. But once you get this far along your normally hooked!!!...
@@CYMotorsport I missed Schumaker winning his final 2 championships for Ferrari because I lost trust in the championship because the fia in my opinion allowed some sort of loophole for the red cars. I am guilty of finding fault in many areas and at many times during Ferrari's history so I was amazed, as well as hugely honoured to shout out loud for those without voices,
I think you should do a video about on track terms when i started watching it took me half a season to figure out what DRS was and how it worked (the 1 second away in a detection zone then in another zone you get to use it. Not that you push a button and a flap opens)..stuff like that
Great idea! I've been wanting to do "F1O1" for months now. 3-5 min videos but HIGHLY targeted and specific. That's my favorite video to make anyway. on a whim I'll favorite this. If others like it, then smash like on OC.
@@CYMotorsport An F101 series would be absolutely brilliant. Just by watching your videos your audience can see how much passion you have for the sport, and how much care you put into research. If you decide to make such a series, I'm sure it would be great.
@@CYMotorsport F101 - love it! I think how the TechQuickie channel does this for technology terms and concepts is a good example of how this type of format can work really well.
Awesome, rare I actively watch a whole vid and 100% focused on it! I’ve been watching F1 for as long as I can remember so naturally have quite a fair bit of understanding on it and I even learnt a few things. Great vid, really enjoyed it!
although I did have a target audience here , I left in a few easter eggs like Tonio and some references. I don't like wasting anyone's time! I got some solid videos before Melbourne coming up though in case a long time F1 fan feels like they can't watch - even though they should. So thanks for that mate! that'll include the fall of williams :)
@@CYMotorsport Been following and watching F 1 for 5 years now from NYC (yes, 3am sometimes) and wish ESPN wouldn't cut out on the Sky coverage so much. Great Video. One thing you could have mentioned is that unlike Nascar, "stewards" can literally take away a win and certainly points (add seconds) . . poor Albon (naughty Lewis) . . lucky Carlos (podium after hours) !!!!!
Wel this is the channel for you! I’m posting a monster video tomorrow covering the history of williams which is one of the oldest teams with a unique story. It’s a very long one though haha
I started watching F1 just a year and half ago and i think one of the big reason im hooked in it is Netflix and your channel... Love the sport, competition, drama and of course the pure technical abilities of those drivers... Keep up the good work and more videos as always. Love from Malaysia ♥️♥️♥️
Thanks Kaarthikeyen! I was angry UA-cam was not showing this video to anyone for some reason but after chatting in the comments with you all it just goes away. this is almost if not more enjoyable for me so I'm glad we can share it
@@CYMotorsport My pleasure. I have been an F1 fan for many years and have always thought the human side of the sport could do with a bit more analysis. Glad you are brave enough to take it on.
Been watching F1 since I was 9. Just came across this video and have to say I approve and appreciate how you were able to somewhat simplify the “basics”. I’ll never forget how I started to gradually understand the different aspects of F1. The sport has come a long way since I first started watching, and i am really looking forward to 2021 for a more competitive Formula 1. Will definitely subscribe and await more of your videos. Thanks!
At one point or another, CrankyYankeeF1 will have gotten a proper british accent and waving his hands like an italian, and is just as enthusiastic as Kimi when the pit forgot his water . On a serious note, love your videos Cranky. They are top notch, keep em going!
i'm too the point where I'm typing "tyre" instead of "tire" and not even realizing. my double t's are more pronounced than ever too haha I'm basically British. all that goes out the window on race coverage though haha I'll still tell stories but most of my time is race coverage and I get a little worked up sometimes haha atleast it's entertaining !
I've been watching F1 for decades, so most of this I already knew. But, there were a few things I didn't know. Thanks so much, this video was really helpful.
+1 sun…I just recently started watching and learning about F1, it’s got me hooked. This video definitely helped me understand, especially the tyre bit. It’s rare finding people in the States that like to watch F1.
Hi! I'm a 19 year old girl, and I just began being interested in F1. I have ADHD, and I have a hard time concentrating, but your voice really calms me down, and make me really listen. Thank you for this video. I appreciate it. Hugs, Bambi
I'm a new F1 fan from Taiwan and just want to thank you for making such a high quality video for the newbie like me. It is so informatic yet clear and interesting. The layout is also sooo great that I actually finished the video without noticing the passing of the time. Again, thanks for your work!!
More love sent from Neo Mexico. We still believe in racing as well. We really love and appreciate what you're doing. If we can help in any way, we've got your back.
I’ll be sure to let you know. Thanks for the support and hello New Mexico! One of my favorite places in the south west thus far has been exploring Fossil Forest. I have a weird obsession with petrified wood haha. I’m sure you’ll understand but not many people know anything about it and I can’t get enough .
Hey I started watching Formula 1 last season mainly due to the netflix documentary and I absolutely loved it. I watched almost every single race, missed 1 or 2 due to the time in my country being very bad for the race itself, but thanks for this, it's interesting to know more. Also discussing with some people who have watched the sport for a long time I realised how little I know, I tought Seb was quite a bad driver (considering he was in arguably the 2nd best car on the field) only to learn he is a 4 time world champion. Can't wait for the new season.
Of course I will! thank you for your support :) they wouldn't take this out of unlisted. They must REALLY not like this video which is good for everyone else haha
Because they suppress the absolute shit out of my videos. Case and point - this video just lost all it's ability to grow bc they hid it. No clue how you even found this unless you got lucky and saw me post a link or something haha. IDC about the numbers anymore. I'm just focused on keep you entertained so I'm glad you like them! This is one of the only videos I've done in a while where I was legit having fun start to finish haha sometimes it can be a grind but not this one
@@CYMotorsport Google use UA-cam as it's incubator of AI technology and big data, given the companies significant knowledge on the subject I don't even believe it works 100%. I just got into F1 a little over a week ago. Got to see the 2020 Belgian Grand Prix and have started playing the game and learning stiff. This video helped me out a lot. Definitely subbed so I can continue to learn
Excellent video! I'm guessing that I'm like a lot of people who, as a result of the Netflix series, find themselves craving information about this amazing sport! Honestly, I'd never watched an F1 race prior to watching the series. I've watched it twice now and streamed a few of the old races that F1 has posted. I'm definitely a new fan! This video is very helpful for us new fans and sheds some light on some of the nuances of this sport. I subscribed and I'll be digging through your page for more insightful videos!
I'm American, and I have a friend whom I made from Germany, he helped me get into F1. I mean I always loved the idea of open wheeled racing but had no idea of anything about it. So thank you for this video, please go more into things because this was very helpful.
My love and interest for F1 grew immensely from the Netflix Drive to Survive series. Thank you for this rundown! I am looking forward to watching my first official race this weekend!
Just subbed. I’ve been a NASCAR fan for the past 5 years and just starting to dip my toes into F1 and IndyCar. Looking forward to seeing more great content from this channel.
ForgedCarbon they still use them. But they just don’t call them hypersoft and ultrasoft. They changed all tire names to c1-c5. Pirelli brings 3 of the 5 tire compounds to each race and they are just referred to as soft medium and hard regardless of what the actual compound is. I do agree they should just use names for each compound like they did before though.
@@dakotagreen0524 technically yes, but if you think about it isn't C3 the medium, C4 the softs, and C5 the supersofts? Or is C1 the hards, C2 the mediums, C3 the softs, and so we have C4 as supersofts and C5 as ultrasofts. Also, from what I've heard the most extreme are the same colours just minus the stripes right?
I used to occasionally (well, very rarely) watch f1 races, never really knew what i was watching but my new bf of 4 months really likes the sport so I've decided to actually learn more about it. Nice explanation, I never thought it would be this interesting, keep up the good work!:)
didn't include aspirated or supercharged. goal was to not say anything that would lead to a hung out question except on tyres. I had a feeling I'd lose the audience if I starting dropping jargon that early. are you a new fan? I also made the calculation a new fan wouldn't be interested in engine displacement or the intricacies or strokes. especially considering the next decade capacity increased to 1600cc in F2. battles to fight - this wasn't one.
@@CYMotorsport Don't underestimate your audience. The detail just expands the story and empowers your viewers with knowledge. :) I'll certainly stick around for your future videos!
@@CYMotorsport You're missing the point... You said it was limited to 2 liter, 750cc engines. An engine cannot be 2 liters and also be 750 cc so by not adding the bit about being N/A or supercharged you just made the whole thing sound really weird... Most people who are going to get into F1 are at least a little bit car fans I would think and more than likely know what Naturally/Normally aspirated is and pretty much everyone knows what a supercharger or turbo is. 2 liter- 2000 cc.. 750 cc -.75 liters, which is why 1000 cc motorcycles are often referred to as liter bikes.
Well i'm a new fan here, fell in love with the sport during this lockdown and started by watching older races but needed to learn more . This video was very helpful thanks.
I called myself an F1 'fan' when I was a child, but that's only because I was so inclined to cars (like, really into cars) and I had this dream of becoming an F1 driver for Ferrari back then. I always looked up to Michael Schumacher too, he was (and still is) one of my all-time favorites. Truth be told, I never had the knowledge and background of being a 'true' F1 fan until I stumbled across this video. I only decided to rekindle the passion this year, roughly 16 years later. Turns out there's more to F1 than just racing across a track. I guess I'm bound to learn more! Thanks for this wonderful video, Cranky!
Super helpful video! I really enjoy the breakdowns and your storytelling that you do on this channel. I have a question about track positioning before the race. I’ve seen some drivers have to start in positions beyond P20, like P22, in the pit lane. Can you provide an explanation on that? How does that come about?
I've been watching F1 for close to 10 years now and somehow failed to realise that there are actually more than 3 slick tire compounds. The colours not being an accurate representation of the compound explains so much actually. So thank you!
Well I chose not to talk about slicks but yes the color thing grading is one thing I hear people being so confused on but no one will explain . I love tyre talk!
dude, at the start of your video when you said, "a 1, 2, 3" I thought there was someone behind me. But thank you so much for making this video it really helped me learn and love Formula 1 more so thanks!
Hey man I've beenl F1 for years but didn't know all the basics; started watching the Netflix show, and I'm thinking about getting a PS 4 game . appreciate you putting out this video this is the most information I've got about F1!iking
Dude, congrats on your videos. I'm kind of a "returning fan" to Formula 1 and your videos are amazing when it comes to getting up to speed. (pun kind of intended) Keep up the amazing work!
Great video, and I like the format. A similar format could be good for a video on race strategy and how to understand whats going on during a race (pit stops, safety cars, tyre choice, weather etc). And one on performance and driving styles: overtaking, drag and aero, wind, drs, engine modes, penalties, and ofc more tyre stuff.
Since I started following Formula One as of last year, your channel has been a godsend. Really enjoying all of your content man! I'm really hoping to find more F1 fans in America within the next couple of months to enjoy all this with. Keep em coming!!!
CrankyYankeeF1 How is aspiration relevant to this question? This seems like a good channel, but now you’re confusing me. This question, which has been asked multiple times, is about an error you made in the conversion from liters to cc regarding engine displacement. That’s my understanding anyways. Am I missing something? Otherwise, good video!
This is tremendous content for a relatively new F1 fan…I got hooked on it a few years ago and I look forward to race weekend…thanks for putting this out there
Hey my dude! Good job per par. Though I am new to the sport myself I am familiar with the procedures part of the sport. I'm not a total motorsports noob. I've watched NASCAR and Indycar for most of my life so I knew a few of the procedures and technicality of the car (Applies more so with Indycars.) The rules is where it gets murky for me and how the stewarding is done. There seems to be massive bias when making decisions on who gets a penalty/how harsh, etc.
We’re all noobs don’t worry about it you know we don’t do that here. I said dual access instead axis system like a freakin idiot in the video haha it’s equally biased as nascar in terms of an agenda. I’ve always wanted to do an overtaking video but I cant. There’s literally too much unsaid. It’s not worth the outcry it’ll get haha . That’s the problem with so much of the rules of F1. And there’s so many opinions. My issue with it all is the most substantial rules we don’t really Know all the time. So much of the car is proprietary so when someone is out of breach, there’s a chance we don’t ever know. They issue what’s called “technical directives”. Or even right this very second the FIA and Ferrari entered a private agreement on a ruling and they chose not to include everyone else in the outcome of their engine investigation. It’s just stuff like that. So then fans are forced to fill in gaps with little to no info. So people will claim Ferrari is getting special treatment. I mean yeah probably but honestly we don’t know. In reality, their engine could be just over the edge but revealing it would give other teams the advantage they paid hundreds of millions to develop. I mean I’d get that. I wouldn’t like it but I understand. That’s actually what I think is happening and that it might even spill into technology for 2021. That’s the only way they’d have the balls to do it like this. So I guess to answer, they are expensive rulings. We’re talking millions on millions with each major outcome. In that sense, it’s almost... understandably political? Idk it’s just not ticky tack political. Everyone is pretty cagey but I feel for good reason
I have been watching F1 off and on since Aryton Senna and Schumacher and all the other greats. I just recently got back into it and love it. This video helped me learn the history of it a little better. I knew everything else but that didn't take away fromt the quality. Well done. Bravo.
Hey dude, I recently started following all your videos like the controversies, the different seasons like 2012, the team specific vids like the Ferrari battle and Hamilton and his rival Rosberg. I started following F1, like a lot of people, after the TV show Drive to Survive. I've read a lot for understanding the sport as and when I hear about those things while watching the sport on the weekends. The most confusing thing that I don't get is the allocation of engine parts or PU or other electronics and their importance in F1. How does a team decide to switch to a new PU or any other part and what all penalties to take from it? Here also you explained the tyres a little bit but how does a team decide on strategies for choosing one over other and why do they go for one-stop over two-stop sometimes and change it if a driver had a bad start or even confusingly if a driver from the other team had a good start!!
I’ll be doing a tyre strategy short here soon :) as for PU, they change for two reasons: upgrades or issues. They are set to a number per year they can’t breach. They release car upgrades spread out accordingly. You learn as the season goes so usually the worst version of your car is first. If you spend all your money early and upgrade sure you’ll do well but other teams adapt and will beat you later on. It’s really a timing thing. Which is why winter testing Is so important. And sometimes the Pu, alternator, etc fails. When they upgrade the power unit or change parts on the fly, usually , generally, you get penalized bc you are taking an unplanned advantage it’s presumed. Drive to survive is great but it leaves a lot out. check out my video later today for an in depth look at history!
Wish this video was out last year when I started watching F1 haha but that’s alright (started watching around 2019 Canadian Grand Prix). Still found it useful and even some stuff amazing that never heard of. Mostly knew teams, drivers, and races through the F1 YT channel, watching live races (even if I had to stay up late for races like Japan) and also people like you :)
Just now getting into F1, so glad this video was recommended. The bit on the tires was especially helpful. Is there a rule/requirement about teams having to run each compound in the race? I thought I heard of that at some point.
This is by far the most underrated F1 tutorial channel ever ! I mean wow ! If Netflix planned to make an F1 tutorial they would be first looking into yours for inspiration. Way to go buddy. I liked and subscribed a few days ago but kept this video in my watchlist so that I could watch this first thing on the weekend ! You’re the Man ! Thanks once again. My best wishes to you, and I plan to binge watch all your videos and bombard you with more and more questions soon 😃.
Great video!! I literally just got into the world of F1 like, a week ago and have been binge watching anything that's related. I've finished a couple of race replays but am still a little confused about some rules and stuffs, this video definitely helps me a loooot with this problem! Thank you guys so much

Don't forget "Valtteri, it's James" move over and let Lewis pass and win !!!! Think Dale E. Sr. would have done that in Nascar???!!
Do you know the difference between tyre deg and tyre wear? Just wondering
All you NEED to know to watch your first F1 race - main points in *bold*
1. *F1 is a multinational motor racing series that takes place across 22 races in 22 countries.* Each race has a different amount of laps (times you go around the track) but each race must be at least 305 kilometres long and can not last more than 2 hours.
2. *There are 10 teams, each with 2 drivers, making a total of 20 cars.* Both cars on each team have the same livery (the paint and stickers) except the number on the car is specific to each driver.i
3. *Drivers are competing to win the Driver's Championship, whilst the teams are competing to win the Constructors Championship.*
(Some teams like Ferrari get "Historical payments" at the end of each year because they have been in the sport for so long.)
There are a number of different flags, but the most common are:
- *Yellow flag:* waved if there is an incident on track to warn drivers (for example if a piece of a car has broken off and is on the track.) When drivers see this they must slow down a little bit. If two yellow flags are waved by one marshall that means the incident is more severe and drivers should be extra careful.
- *Green Flag:* these are waved when the track is clear to let drivers know that any previous incidents have been cleared up and they can return to normal racing speed.
- *Red flag:* this means the race is being stopped (usually if there has been a particularly bad crash that will take a long time to clean up.)
- *Blue flag:* this are waved at a driver if he is being "lapped" by a car that is ahead of him, telling him to let the driver behind past.
There are always more details to learn about F1 as you become a bigger fan, that's what makes the sport so fun, there's always more to learn, but to get started that list of 12 is all you need to know to enjoy your first F1 race. (There are a few answers to questions new fans have asked in the replies below, so if you have a question it might have been answered there, but feel free to ask anything that you want below.)
There are a few channels which are great for explaining all the different parts of F1 in simple videos here on UA-cam, including Cranky Yankee!
1. Chain Bear (has weekly videos on all the main parts of F1)
2. Marc Priestley F1 Elvis (ex-Mclaren pit crew, weekly Q&A and explainer vids)
3. THE RACE (motorsports news channel with with discussions about current F1 issues)

- Why have Ferrari been struggling recently?
- Could the Williams team make a comeback soon?
- Does "season" mean "year"?
- Is Netflix's F1: Drive to Survive good?
- What's the difference between the Virtual Safety Car and the normal Safety Car?
- What are the "Historical payments" you mentioned?
- Why would Ferrari ever leave F1?
- Will the upcoming cost-cap help level the playing field and give us closer racing?
- What does GP2 mean?
- Does the order of the 22 Grand Prix change each year?
- How is the order of the Grand Prix decided each year?
- Why do cars go in wavy line sometimes before racing?
- Can cars go to the pit anytime they want?

I was like, "something's off about this F1 video" -- then I realised. It's the american accent. I'm not used to people talking F1 in an american accent...
hahaha I get that a lot. It would be REALLY weird if someone with a british access was talking seriously about american football haha I totally get it
CrankyYankeeF1 I don’t think its about that. I think its about the brits dominating F1. Be it technical teams or the fans at home that becomes youtubers. So your accent is unusual in this way, i would say.

Red Apple i’m aware of Schumacher’s and Alonso’s legendary careers, but i dont mind checking out some of that action. Thank you for the suggestion🙏🏼
same here! my brother is into F1 and told me that I should watch the show.
And to top it all off, focused way too much on that stupid egotistical Aussie driver and other second- and third-rate scrubs.

abbas ahmed it cant be true!
It's actually Dual Axis Steering
You are right it's called Dual Axis Steering....but there is technically only one axis. Weather the steering wheel is rotated about the axis or moved along the axis, there is only one axis. If CY wants to call it Dual Access Steering it's sort of makes sense too since now there are now two ways to access the steering of the wheels. Probably a small mistake on CY's part but still another great video!
I think I literally had a stroke. no clue why i wrote that. I wrote a 2000 word blog about it this week haha

This is one of the only videos I've done in a while where I was legit having fun start to finish haha sometimes it can be a grind but not this one

@@CYMotorsport I found you and this vid from my UA-cam recommendations. Keep it up and your channel will get huge. Your vids are very good quality.
@@CYMotorsport Google use UA-cam as it's incubator of AI technology and big data, given the companies significant knowledge on the subject I don't even believe it works 100%. Have you never seen a "new" video offered to you that you have already watched!!?? They keep embedding new smarts and yet they appear to forget it's emotive connectivity that makes people watch things, something you are very good at...!! For all the smarts and all the data, it only adds value to people if they can interpret something from it. i.e. the decision to watch was already made emotively, the data just supports the decision. Bro, I am in every sense of the phrase, a new fan. You're videos are amazing, very insightful and informative. Thank you brother. I am learning a lot.
so glad to hear !
This video is super informative, even for a seasoned fan like me (I have fond memories of watching Senna in the early 90's with my cousins).
I've got a great video for you on the way then :) the next few videos are all intertwined so thanks for everyone's patience. I'm going to really crush it with the absence of F1 - I got everyones back!
I just got into F1 a little over a week ago. Got to see the 2020 Belgian Grand Prix and have started playing the game and learning stiff. This video helped me out a lot. Definitely subbed so I can continue to learn
„It’s not easy to be the best of 20, but it’s easier to be best of 2”

Excellent video! I'm guessing that I'm like a lot of people who, as a result of the Netflix series, find themselves craving information about this amazing sport! Honestly, I'd never watched an F1 race prior to watching the series. I've watched it twice now and streamed a few of the old races that F1 has posted. I'm definitely a new fan! This video is very helpful for us new fans and sheds some light on some of the nuances of this sport. I subscribed and I'll be digging through your page for more insightful videos!
Great timing! Next few videos touch on all these things and then some
I'm a die hard fan but I still felt like I learned a lot from this video! Great watch, can't wait for 2021's new regulations to shake things up.
I'm American, and I have a friend whom I made from Germany, he helped me get into F1. I mean I always loved the idea of open wheeled racing but had no idea of anything about it. So thank you for this video, please go more into things because this was very helpful.
The Netflix documentary series is what made me a fan of F1, now I really enjoy the sport
Got one coming soon about that! welcome friend :)
Than you! As a first time owner/player of F1 game (F1 2021) I really appreciate the video you made.
My love and interest for F1 grew immensely from the Netflix Drive to Survive series. Thank you for this rundown! I am looking forward to watching my first official race this weekend!
Hop on the stream for my annoying voice haha
Just subbed. I’ve been a NASCAR fan for the past 5 years and just starting to dip my toes into F1 and IndyCar. Looking forward to seeing more great content from this channel.
Good time to sub. I’m about to go on a rampage starting with the single largest piece of formula 1 content made on UA-cam haha
I really wish they brought back hypersoft and ultrasoft names - as well as the rainbow. I find the current system very confusing - plus it sounds cool
I'm a major fan of the rainbow!
Technically that is what C4 and C5 are. The naming convention changed simply to make it less confusing to the casual fan.
@@topofmuffin Well, yes. That and most importantly... The C O L O U R S
1:35, are you sure “2 liter 750cc engines” is correct? Does this mean 2.75 liter?
I thought the exact same! The actual regulations were: 2.0 litre naturally aspirated OR 750cc (0.75 litre) supercharged.
didn't include aspirated or supercharged. goal was to not say anything that would lead to a hung out question except on tyres.
CrankyYankeeF1 I’m an engineer. Also relatively new in the sense I’m generally aware of the history but not specifics
I didn’t see anyone mentioning this, big Kudos to you for being the first non German content creator I hear pronouncing „Vettel“ the right way :P
"You won't be seeing Haas beating Ferrari anytime soon"... Let's see about that xd
dude, at the start of your video when you said, "a 1, 2, 3" I thought there was someone behind me. But thank you so much for making this video it really helped me learn and love Formula 1 more so thanks!
So funny how there are so many people here who say they’re the only F1 fans of their group and it seems we never meet each other, only at races 😂
Hey man I've beenl F1 for years but didn't know all the basics; started watching the Netflix show, and I'm thinking about getting a PS 4 game . appreciate you putting out this video this is the most information I've got about F1!iking
8:39 oh how the turntables
Dude, congrats on your videos. I'm kind of a "returning fan" to Formula 1 and your videos are amazing when it comes to getting up to speed. (pun kind of intended)
Keep up the amazing work!
I'm really going to commit to this F101 idea I think. how long are these videos for each of these topics in your head ?
Since I started following Formula One as of last year, your channel has been a godsend. Really enjoying all of your content man! I'm really hoping to find more F1 fans in America within the next couple of months to enjoy all this with. Keep em coming!!!
"We're in the final year of the turbo hybrid era" God I wish this was true
That was a good and easy to understand wrap up.
Been watching F1 since the 80s.
veteran approved! glad you enjoyed it and it wasn't so basic it was boring haha
@@CYMotorsport Have been watching few other of your videos, very good!
Subbed.
1:37
Does "2litre 750cc" mean 2750cc, or did you just completely miss the ball there?
I didn't think it was necessary to explain to a new fan post war engines or natural aspiration / supercharging
He explained in another comment. It was 2 liters for naturally aspirated engines and 750 for supercharged.
This is tremendous content for a relatively new F1 fan…I got hooked on it a few years ago and I look forward to race weekend…thanks for putting this out there
“Your not going to see Ferrari being beaten by Haas any time soon”
Me having Styrian Flashbacks: This did not age well...😂😂😂
Good overview. I've been following F1 since the Stirling Moss days. Well explained.
Another veteran approval - love it!
Very informative, thanks.
glad you liked it chris!
Great video! Keep'em coming! Fun fact: They don't spray champagne in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi GPs. They spray sparkling rose water.
This is an awesome fact!
My issue with it all is the most substantial rules we don’t really
Know all the time.
Outstanding! While I've been watching F1 for years, I never (understood) 90% of this information. Ty for producing this video!
That means a lot and is an awesome compliment thank you
That was thorough.
Thank you.
I'm new to it . This helps. 👍
of course Fritz! I'll be starting a series soon called "F101" keep a look out. they'll be short videos about one topic only though in detail.
9:48 that Haas animation got me laughing, it's soo accurate. Anyway, interesting videos, even for those who aren't completely new to the sport.
6:37
Oh,is that the whole Mercedes team together?
Nvm, long live Nico Rosberg
Wish this video was out last year when I started watching F1 haha but that’s alright (started watching around 2019 Canadian Grand Prix). Still found it useful and even some stuff amazing that never heard of. Mostly knew teams, drivers, and races through the F1 YT channel, watching live races (even if I had to stay up late for races like Japan) and also people like you :)
that's wonderful! You keep telling me what's helpful, and I'll keep adapting from the collective voice :)
CrankyYankeeF1 will do 👍
Just now getting into F1, so glad this video was recommended.
I wonder if you can please make a video on the Fernando Alonso crash that allegedly electrified him in testing?
Are there even details out? Such a weird moment I could never find anything on that they seemed to wipe it under the rug
Yup they’ve kept it a close secret for sure
Thank you for all this content CYM. I’ve loved F1 for 30 years. The history of Motorsport is such a great thing.
Anyone else a new fan now from watching drive to survive. Girlfriend and I love it now
they made it seem like merc was so close to losing haha that's the only thing I didnt like
Yeh..I explained to her why they weren't in the first season. Basically a battle for 2nd when Merc gets around the first corner.
Great video!! I literally just got into the world of F1 like, a week ago and have been binge watching anything that's related. I've finished a couple of race replays but am still a little confused about some rules and stuffs, this video definitely helps me a loooot with this problem! Thank you guys so much
Glad you enjoy it. If you have any questions feel free to ask away or shoot them in the forum. As the site grows I can manage that even more actively: www.crankyyankeef1.com/forums/topic/formula-1-basics/
It's weird i watched but i knew everything in the video
hahah that's a huge compliment. I tried really hard to drop subtle winks like Tonio to keep everyone interested.
@@CYMotorsport i think it's the way you explain things. Like the 2012 video i wached it over 3 times and i still enjoy it 😅
Really well explained and enjoyable to watch. I've been watching Formula 1 for many years and I still enjoyed the video! Cheers:)
Glad you liked it Tomas and welcome!
