Raiden is my favorite MGS character because he represents living for the sake of living and forging your own freedom from the oppressive loops of life.
Ooh i dno about that 😂 i love him but he really struggles in forging his future even after mgs2 . He more represents how not dealing with trauma will lead to it affecting your life and relationships later on and make you easier to be manipulated
This is a very good analysis. Raiden in MGS2 is my favorite version of him. His tragic backstory, the codec conversations with Rose, the fact he can do cartwheels, and the skull suit he wears throughout the whole big shell incident. (Honestly he looks hot in it. 😅) I don't mind his cyborg look in MGS4 and in Rising, but for me MGS2 is where it's at.
Metal gear rising revengence manges to be over the top and goofy as well as being so energetic and crazy it gets your adrenaline pumping and it makes everything so badass! The battles to the death, collecting cyborg spins, THE MEMES, and of course Raiden himself. Gone from series new awkward hero to cyborg high heels wearing badass cyborg ninja assassin out for blood. Like most great stories as epic as it is Raiden slowly realizes revenge isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and this is reflected in the Armstrong fight. Despite being a corrupt politician Armstrong makes some good points about the state of the country, sadly the 2 still have to fight I feel like that’s what “it has to be this way” symbolizes, 2 different ideologies coming a head in one of the best final bosses in gaming and when you finally win Raiden doesn’t brag about it he respects Armstrong and adopts some of his philosophies it’s freaking perfect just like the game as a whole. ❤
I'm hype. I checked out your old videos. This is a gem, we feel very similarly. Raiden would be my 4th favorite video game character of all time. I think his story and his growth is underrated!

Rose is a realistic military girlfriend. You can be under fire, and there she is, calling your cellphone and wanting to talk about your relationship. And then, when they block out all cell signals, she takes it personally.
As someone with C-PTSD, I began to relate heavily to Raiden the more I replayed MGS2, 4, and MGR. I've experienced severe sexual abuse, poverty, homelessness, bullying, alienation, near-death experiences, witnessing violence, being the target of an anti-LGBTQ hate crime, and witnessing first-hand police brutality in a protest scenario, all before I turned 21. When Jack speaks about the Nightmares in MGS2, the Alcoholism to forget and numb the pain, the feeling of hopelessness, living to survive to the next day with no autonomy. It's only become more relatable to me as I've grown. Often I've had to question reality, what my ideals and values are, how or even if I can live up to those values and succeed in my goals. I deal with Hypervigilance, I scan every environment envisioning how to survive in a worst case scenario, how to protect others, especially those closest to me. I own Pepper Spray, and understand that I am capable of violence. But I don't wish to enact Violence for Violence sake, but only in the protection of myself and others. I could never understand what it is like to be a child soldier, but I do understand dealing with horrific experiences at a young age, and how that affects your psyche, your sense of self. my flashbacks and dissociations take me out of the present, I hear screams of those I've seen in pain, sounds of gunshots and pepper spray deploying, people yelling at me. My nightmares follow similar themes, but in different scenarios. I feel like my sense of time is distorted, my past weighs me down, my present is agony, and my future is filled with anxiety. But in Raiden, I see someone who had to confront his demons, things both outside of his control and within, to forgive himself and embrace who he is as a person and what he believes in. He finds people who support him and share his ideals in Rose, Snake, Sunny, Otacon, and the Maverick team, and a reason to keep living in order to provide for his son so he will never be in the position Jack was as a child. Raiden is by no means a perfect person and has caused a lot of pain in his life, I think at some point most have us have become the villain in someone else's story, or have caused harm to those we care about even unintentionally. I think that the fact Raiden is perceived as Whiny and Overly dramatic in MGS2 makes sense when you realize this is a man who really hasn't had a childhood, all he knows is the battle field, he couldn't properly process his emotions, had no role models in his life, everyone took advantage of him. And he is in a high-stakes mission only coming out of VR training with Repressed Memories of the worst moments of his life. Of course he is gonna be confused and on edge, he wants to figure out what the hell is going on, finish his objective, and get out of that situation as quickly as possible. And through it all, all the lies he's been told about who he is and what he is fighting for begin to unravel, and he is left to pick up the pieces and figure out how to live for himself, not as a tool for someone else's agenda. He is a deeply empathetic person, despite being volatile and prone to violence, he cares for those who find themselves in similar situations of helplessness he found himself in as a child. He wants a world where people like him are no longer needed, where people are free to make their own choices, not just to be pawns of those with power and influence. In a lot of ways, his goals and mine align. and that's why I've grown to love him as a character.
