    This morning videographer Henry Tenby went out to Vancouver's South Terminal to film the Sunday morning departure of two Air North HS748s on their summer fishing charters. This video was shot on a Canon T2i SLR digi camera, and the quality seems to be every bit as good as a pro video camera. The large image sensor does a fabulous job rending a clear, crisp image. And the sound is direct capture by camera. No external mic was used. We were recently up north and flew on Air North's HS748 and filmed in HD so in due course we will release another Air North HS748 DVD .. specially for all the Rolls Royce Dart fans our there!

    Great to hear the unmistakable Dart sound. Iconic aircraft along with the Viscount and Herald from the days when Britain had it’s own aircraft industry. Super video. Many thanks. Mick🇬🇧

      Mick Boakes I am glad you enjoyed my video. When these 748s were based here for a few summers I knew it was a unique opportunity to capture them on video as their days had to be numbered. Which they were. Air North has since replaced most of them on their sked runs with boring ATR42s.

      JetFlix I live under long finals into London Gatwick and as you can imagine there’s not a lot going on at the moment. Wouldn’t it be great if a ghost of a Dart powered 748 passed overhead in these unprecedented times. But thanks to your insight I can at least indulge in some nostalgia .       @@mickboakes7023 I can imagine there is a strange quiet at LGW now, same story here at YVR. The HS748s are gone forever from here, as the 748s have not been here for summer fishing charters for a good number of years now. When I filmed this was close to their last season here, maybe they one or more seasons after this one shown in the video. Like you I miss the sound of Dart engines. It is a lovely sound isn't it.     We use Air North to fly emergency life saving meds up to YXY. These far North Canadian airlines (Air North, First Air, Canadian North, Air Creebec, Bearskin, Perimeter Aviation, many others) are the lifeblood of the North. Thanks for showing this!

    My very first flight was on a Liat airlines HS748 from Dominica to Antigua back in the late 70s. Fell in love with airplanes from way back then. Brought back nice memories.

      Wayne Pond fantastic that your early flight memories were on LIAT, which was a famous and iconic HS748 operator of world renown. Their lovely pink and green colour schemes were famous for aviation fans. And the region LIAT served is so spectacular and beautiful. The airplane has such character, lovely large windows, spacious interior. Impressive Rolls Royce Dart engines. Thank you for taking the time to comment my video.

    Yikes, it's been a few years since I've heard the sound of the Hawker Siddeley 748's engines. What a glorious sound! I was young, however, I just loved this airplane, and still do.

      We still a few of these still operating here in Canada, with Air North in the Yukon as well as Air Creebec in Timmins, Ontario. They will be around for a while.

    Aah the good old '748. We had these things flying in India and I have travelled a lot in them as a child. My father was an engineer with Indian Airlines and still knows them like the back of his hand. They were slow and noisy, and according to my dad, somewhat underpowered. The hot Indian climate didn't make things any easier. They used water-methanol in the engines to increase power. The Indian Air Force still operates about 40 of them, many of which were built in the late 1960s/early 1970s and pushing more than 50 years of service. It seems there's no replacement. The whine of the RR Dart and the distinctive growl during turns bring back many memories.

      Dear Ganesh, thank you for sharing the fabulous comment and memories of the 748 in India. Yes the Indian machines were license built by Hindustan Aviation in the 1960s. I was not aware they are still going strong, wonderful to hear. India is on my post covid crisis list of must visit countries, now you have given me one more reason to visit. Are the 748s spread out throughout the country or just at a few bases? Did you Dad also work on the Indian Airlines Viscounts or were they before his time?

      Dear JetFlix , The HS-748s of the IAF are spread out throughout the country, but they can be found only in IAF bases which aren't very easy to gain access to. You may spot the odd one in a civilian airport, if you are lucky. Unfortunately, none of the commercial operators operate them anymore. My dad began his career in Indian Airlines working on the DC-3, when it was about to be retired. He subsequently worked on the Viscount, Fokker F-27, Sud-Caravelle, HS-748, Boeing 737 and finally on the Airbus A300. Of these, he spent most of his time with the 748 and the 737. I hope you get to visit India once the COVID-19 crisis ends. Cheers.

      Thank you Ganesh. There will be much research to do for my eventual visit to your country. The Indian Air Force also operates IL-76s too. The country offers a rich history on both the tourist and aviation fronts.

      For me the British airliners are the most beautiful. At least here in Canada we still have some HS748s operating and some Avroliners. The 748 fishing charters out of YVR are ancient history now. With covid we had zero fishing tourist lodge season at YVR.

    Back in the day, in New Zealand, when Mount Cook Airlines operated 748s, my flights from Rotorua to Christchurch used to take two hours. Sometimes, depending on the pilot and the weather, passengers were allowed to stand in the flight deck doorway to admire the scenery as we approached the Marlborough Sounds.
    When the 748s were replaced by ATRs the Rotorua/Christchurch flight suddenly got twenty minutes shorter and passengers weren't allowed up front any more.

      I worked for Mt. Cook Airlines as a ground serviceman stationed in Taupo, (TUO) New Zealand between 1981 & 1997 & I used to hate it in the winter when I had to de-ice the 748 that had stayed overnight & was due out about 0645/hrs, (still can't get away from 24 hour time) each morning as it was a damn freezing job duly made worse by the typical Mickey Mouse de-icing equipment etc that we were expected to work with during those years. Can't stand the sight of airports now!!!

    had the honour and privilege of flying on this unforgettable aircraft from Whitehorse to Dawson and back, unbelievable, also got a mint cheesecake and a really good sandwich on a 1h 15 minute flight (of course pre covid times)

      I also got to enjoy a number of flights on the 748 up north out of Whitehorse as well .. and I enjoyed all my flights back in the day. It would’ve been in 10 to 15 years ago time frame.

    I never got to fly on this beautiful aircraft, but I did fly MKE-ORD on a United A/L Viscount. What a thrill! Alas, the last of the Golden Age of commercial passenger flying (yes, I know this is a cargo flight).

      The Darts definitely have a distinctive sound to them. They definitely reveal that the turboprop engine is a jet propeller engine, an not a turbocharged piston engine like that of a Porshe.

    Did a few startups on Budgies at LHR and that ground handler certainly needed his ear defenders! ...great film..well done...nice to see Budgies at work

    There is nothing like the scream of. RollsRoyce Dart! I mis the 748’s. They truly were ‘mini’ airliners compared to a SAAB 340.

    Would loved to have flown them for a living but there were not many around in the UK by the time I got my commercial ticket. I know a few who did fly them.

      They were fabulous pieces of kit. Easy to fly. Rugged as hell. Basically the aeroplane version of a Landrover.

    Rolls Royce Dart engines have a very disctictinve sound to them. You can definitely tell that they are jet propeller engines, and not turbocharged piston driven propeller engines. Unlike the Pratt & Whitney engines of the DeHaviland Dash 8, they are single shafted engines.

    There is no hush-kit for a Dart engine. Most of Air North's Darts are Post-Mod 1860. Mod 1860 runs cooler and burns less fuel than non-mod engines. Mod 1860 also is purportedly quieter due to some design changes to the compressor section. Personally, having worked extensively around both mod & non-mods, I could never tell any difference. As to sounding like an F-27 / F-227, that is not the props so much as the fact that the engines are basically identical on the 748 and the Fokker / Fairchild.

      Well whatever the difference is, the scream on these and the some Fokker F.27s (later models) do have some sort of sound suppression on them. The props do make all the difference in the sounds they make on takeoff. Ive noticed for years. :)

      It is my understanding that the Dart engine can no longer be overhauled as the last shop doing OH work stopped doing these engines. Meaning the only replacement for a time ex Dart was to find another Dart with some time remaining. Is this true? When I visited Air Creebec to film their HS748 operation several years ago this is what I was told. And they said their 748s were low utilization so could last for about another 15-20 years.

    Watch at 4:16 you can see a big puff of white smoke come out the number 1 engine. You can also see some more of it as hes spooling up to takeoff.

      ***** Claro que respeito sua opinião. Quando disse "leigo" não foi no sentido pejorativo, mas de quem não tem experiência além de voar como passageiro - a não ser que você seja piloto, mecânico, mas em princípio, suponho que não (...e se eu estiver errado, não será a primeira vez, kkk, e peço que me desculpe). O ponto de vista e as impressões de um passageiro, ainda que voe há muitos anos, não podem ser os mesmos de um piloto ou um mecânico. Para você ter uma ideia, já em 1966 reconheci o CV-990 em que eu voava por causa dos 'Whitcomb bodies" sobre as asas - mas foi só, eu era uma criança na época. Contando dessa maneira eu vivo no meio há 50 anos, mas sou piloto há mais de 30, o olhar muda. Não pretendi ofende-lo de forma alguma, peço que aceite minhas desculpas em público se foi isso que transpareceu. Apenas quis enfatizar o fato de que quem tem aviação "no sangue" se importa com a manutenção em dia, não com a idade do avião.
