  • This is the first time I am doing bird photography from my floating hide. I got zero photos this time, but that is going to change this winter.

    ••• Q&A •••
Q - What is the little thing sitting on top of the your camera at 6:30 ?
A - It is a small mirror so that I can see the screen:
    www.ulanzi.com/products/custo...
Q - What lens are you using in the video?
    A - The Tamron 150-600 mm G2
Q - why Is the tent not waterproof?
A - (from the company) It's water repellent. Since the tent has windows with netting it is meaningless to make the tent waterproof.
We could have used waterproof tent fabric for the tent but that would be a big mistake: it is considerably hotter in the sunshine and the climate in the hide would become an ordeal. And we had another reason to choose for polycotton: it makes far less noise than nylon and reflects less light.
If you are worried about your camera you can choose one of our rain covers (shower cap we call them) or build something yourself.

My favorite moments of the video is when Morten grunts, "aauagh!" at 6:08, "WwaaAA!" at 6:28, "shit" at 6:31, and "holey moley" at 6:36. Nice to know that I'm not the only one that gets into situations like that whilst afield.

The nice thing about your videos is that you never lose your sense of humour even though you are sitting completely soaked in the middle of a field. 😉 I like that you showed us setting up the hide, because mostly people are "Let's use a floating hide today" and then a hide magically appears.
Usually your videos are very relaxing but seeing your camera this close to the water made my stress levels skyrocket 😬 Nevertheless it was perfect to watch with a cup of tea.😊

My mind can't help but imagine how funny it'd be to sit along a quiet lake while enjoying a beautiful evening only to witness a man emerge from the lake wearing a blind like Darth Helmet from Spaceballs. This floating blind seems like a lot of fun even if you didn't get a photo out of it.

There are two options here: or blind will be waterproof but with lots of ventilation openings, or be complete breathable and not waterproof. The reason for that is very serious. When you use floating blinds your feet are often buried in the bottom of the water. Because of that, you can stumble upon pockets of plant decomposition gases under the mud that will float upward into your blind. Some of them can knock you out or even be toxic, so floating blinds need to be well ventilated. I've heard about situations when photographers drown as they
lose their consciousness because of those gases.

Those gases are methane, the metabolic waste of methanogenic bacteria. That's no toxic gas..but better have ventilation, and not light a flame

Most wouldn't show a day like this, but it's super refreshing to know that this things happen even to the most talent out there. So I am sad the day was unsuccessful, but again it was nice to see. A very valiant effort Morten. Perhaps the blind is not rainproof because it will restrict your vision . I think that the Drysuit could be very hot on a hot day and but also having your legs and lower body surrounded with water would help to cool you . So we look forward to your future experience and reports. Good luck with the project 😉

Come spring I am ordering that floating blind! (and the suit!) Have had a couple of friends tinkering with building me a floating platform, but this one seems spot on! Another good video, thanks!! Thinking if you're going to be IN the water in the blind, use your camera and lens raincoat in the blind rather than worrying about making the blind itself waterproof? Of course, getting caught in the rain BEFORE you get dressed for wet weather and get into the blind.... LOL I shot in the mountains a couple of weeks ago with my new D6 and 180-400 and it poured on me and the gear -- I was dressed for it; not the gear. All was fine -- hooray for Nikon weatherproofing! :)
