"Don't ever let somebody tell you, you can't do something. You got a dream, you got to protect it. People can't do something themselves they want to tell you, you can't do it. You want something, go get it. Period." Most beautiful words I've ever heard. I always remember this words when my friends tell me I can't do something. I dont care if my friends laugh at me, but I know I will be competing at the 2016 Olympics Triathlon Event! I am going to the Olympics! Period.
This movie is so powerful. One of the most inspiring movies of our generation. I think the best thing for fathers to do is to watch this with their sons. I honestly teared. The acting, a similar situation with my parents in the past. I love Will Smith.
Just watched this movie for a class. Happy that i pick such a inspirational movie. Its so true "don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do anything in life & if you have a dream protect it at all cost"
One of the best movies ever! When I saw this movie it made me cry. The whole thing is just really inspirational. I love this part from the movie though. It is so good.
I'm a freshman in highschool, and yeah I know I'm young, I moved to the US in 09, I caught an interest in American football, its an amazing sport. I have only played it for one year and it inspired me. I want to play more football, and my biggest dream is to play for MU in NCAA, and eventually NFL for the Chiefs, or any team. It's a big dream, my family and friends are saying "It's too hard, especially for you, you'll never make it". I won't give up or let go of my dream, not for anything.
I just LOVE this movie. It gives me some hope that everything doesn't have to be perfect to reach your dreams. Just wrote a blog about it- eating inspiration for breakfast! I have been working for four years through so many people telling me that I don't have a right to my dream and I know now this is possible!
I didn't have a dad that told me "I couldn't do something," but I had a dad tell me that what I did accomplish wasn't good enough. I was a national athlete twice in grade school (volleyball and softball). I was 3rd in State and made it to the state championship in diving, and I was an all-star cheerleader in HS, and while I was a current D-2 cheerleader in college, my dad said these words to me, that I will NEVER forget "You could have been such a good athlete." That hurt me to the core.
I'm 15 years old. Its my dream to be a comedian, all my life I've put off the opportunities I've had to excel because I didn't think I was good enough and i was afraid of failure. But now after spending the night on youtube watching inspirational videos, I'm going to grab my dream and I'm going to protect it. "I'm going to show you how great I am"
I've written about this clip a couple times. As a mother and coach I've watched so many parents words kill the dream within their children. I pray I will watch every word I whisper to others...
i cried so much watching this movie, like you don't even understand. i don't even cry at most movies, but this..this really got me going. will smith is a legendary actor :)
Its amazing when one contrasts this scene to the conclusion of the movie. The world is blocked off to Chris and Christopher by the fence of their apprehensions and worry. Then, by the films end it shows the Father and Son overlooking the City about to embark on their new journey fuelled by a well deserved happiness. In a sense, they are on top of the world. I think its truly wonderful when one puts those two scenes side by side. The conclusion also features the real Chris Gardner which is cool.
"Don't ever let somebody tell you that you can't do something. If you have a dream, you have to protect it. People can't do something themselves and tell you that you can't do it. If you want something, go get it. Period." - Will Smith
its been 5 years since this movie was released, already :O what the heck! just watched it again! such an inspirational film, definitely within my top 5. Brilliant job Will Smith, top actor.
Very, very true. People always ask "what is the secret to success/money in life?" In reality, there is no 'secret'. Those people who became successful created their own path. Success can be different for everybody- Very true. Create and follow your own path to success.
" If you have a dream, you have to protect it ... If you want something, go get it. Period." That should be the moto of such a great nation. Wherever that nation is.. I want to be there.
I dont know what you're are going through or how you feel, but all i can say is don't feel sorry for yourself for the rest of your life. Be happy, be the best person you can be, when the time comes, you'll be happy and happiness is the most important thing in this life.
The funny thing with these scenes is...the advice you give to others, you basically give to yourself. He is not talking to his son, he is talking to himself. Doesn't make it less worth while though, still an important lesson.
usually i teach students "conversation", "it stuff" or similar things at college or university. but my last class each term is about dreams. following them and trying to fulfill them. this scene and quotes by randy pausch are some key ingredients of those classes. thx for the inspiration!
People's opinions want to convince others that they can't do something that's truly great! Well, opinions are biased, whereas the facts are not! We, as a society, pass these facts down onto our younger generations in the hopes of empowering them towards a bettered perception of tomorrow today. This film acts as a prelude to that specific premise. It's that feeling YOU have deep inside your heart that determines YOU and everything that you are destined to become! That is what others try to kill!
Watched this ~15 times before interviewing at my top choice medical school. Starting in high school and all throughout college, my parents were openly skeptical that I would graduate college let alone get into medical school. I got in :)
My dad told me once that I would never be shit with my life. He works at wal-mart. "people cant do somethin themselves, they wanna tell you you cant do it." Those words are true.
Great movie. This part is particularly useful for those whose dad had a negative attitude. Not everyone can win, but if you have a positive attitude, your chances of success are far better.
Wow what an inspirational plotline. A black man gets a job in America. They should make more movies with extraordinay storylines like this. Absolutely fucking extraordinary. What a country! God bless America
The best part of the film is undoubtably the ending scene, admittedly it would be nothing without the rest of the film! But it is probably my favourite out of any movie I have watched.
This reminds me of my life, at 16 i picked up the guitar, my father said why do you wanna play guitar, you arent gonna be Zeppelin, you arent gonna be the beatles, you arent gonna be Metallica! It hurt a little to hear my own dad say this but its 2013 im 20 years old and i can play alot of these band's songs.
this reminds me when I was not doing well in school, and all my teachers told my parents and me that I can't pass my current classes and I should "do less." Then afterwards my dad told me that I can just give up and take "the easy way out" or I can try. I passed all my classes, and the next year I got the best report card I got in years. I wasn't going to let them be right because I knew I can do what they say I can't.
I do have a dream, when u watched this movie it quicken my soul, now I am working on my dream everyday. I will not, and I shall not let anyone tell I cant do it!!
“Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn't have it in the beginning.” - Mahatma Gandhi
This is the part of raising a kid where the kid actually teaches the parent. If you've seen the movie you will know that at this point he realized what he was missing in life by telling it to his son. It was the turning point in his fathers life.
i have a son who is 4 now. his mother and I separated when he was one. when live in a small city Flint Mi. and Im with him as much as possible. Im ghetto and I know that.... but i have recently graduated from the university of Michigan b.b.a. with a.g.a. and I had a father but not much of one. Just wanted to say for me life starts now and we didnt have to be poor nor more. I work at the flint journal but want more...............
I had the best day ever in School....My mom picks me up and tells me that I probably will end up...in a certain place...made me feel like shit and might as well give up... I see this and...it cheered me up...I fucking cried...I cried...because this teaches me that I can do what I want and don't let anyone including your parents... tell you...you cant do something....Thank You
Bottom line even the bad time passes away like the good, and no matter how tough it appears to be one should never give up his ethics and beliefs. Also the bad time teaches us that something in life which we could never learn without it, its the true value of happiness, its being happy; its about knowing the true value of time, success, money & people around you. Even the darkest of clouds have a silver lining.
its seem like its was yesterday man when will smith was young boy like this i have followed will all my life cant belive he have chidlren now and his the father will smith biggest rolemodel in my life amazing humain bean !!!
I watch this every single day. It never gets old, and it still sends chills down my spine

and it increases my faith in God...
may GOD bless us all people He loves
This is absolutely my favorite movie quote of all time & inspires me everyday!
It seriously is Inspirational! It just goes to show no matter how bad things get, they can always get better!
Just watched this movie for a class. Happy that i pick such a inspirational movie. Its so true "don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do anything in life & if you have a dream protect it at all cost"
with those few words, listening to this, i feel so moved and it lights up my day. I should listen to this when im feeling down.
i love the line and to add, always remember that there is only one person which makes you HAPPY and that person in YOU!! :)
One of the best movies ever! When I saw this movie it made me cry. The whole thing is just really inspirational. I love this part from the movie though. It is so good.
Perfect, I am protecting my DREAM, and going after it! nothing will STOP me! thanks for Inspiration.
I give myself this speech everytime AS A REWARD after I manifest each and every single step towards my dream...It's the climb...
what make it are not just words of Will, but a few beautiful piano strings...
these could even broke a stoned heart.

You have a dream, you gotta protect it. Don`t ever let anyone tell you you can`t do something.
just looking at this, i know anything is possible. we should ALL follow our dreams and let NO ONE stop us.

usually i teach students "conversation", "it stuff" or similar things at college or university. but my last class each term is about dreams. following them and trying to fulfill them. this scene and quotes by randy pausch are some key ingredients of those classes. thx for the inspiration!
Great scene. Successful people dares to take risks that others won´t take, they don´t get discourage by anyone and they try again even if they fail.
Wow, Reality of life, mind blowing, many thanks to the video loader, and the producer of the MOVIE.
