    I was fascinated by the on-skate method.. The whole putting "cleaner" on a "paper towel.." Then there was the process of "wiping off" and "scrubbing".. spectacular concept!

    Just got some vintage skates w/ original wheels in outstanding condition, 40 years old, look to have been used outdoors...maybe worn a half dozen times back in the day? not sure if the wheels are indoor or outdoor wheels, no indication. 62mm and seem kinda soft to me... Anyway, despite their being in great shape, the wheels did have a nice even layer of black unmentionable 40 year old goo!!! This terror came off easily enough with a rag and some Simple Green and some elbow grease... underneath it all, the wheels were smooooth when I finished. Probably orange cleaner is good too on a heavy duty situation like mine, but I didn't have any... I also did a surface clean around the bearings with rubbing alcohol and q-tips and cotton rag and they spun much better, look great. Going to try them indoors tomorrow!

      Similar situation here. Just scored a practically unused set of vintage Reidell suedes with Tom Peterson nice and chunky Hyper Strada wheels for a giveaway price. I can not believe how clean they are, however the wheels have air holes that go all the way through and a pretty good layer of hairy dust stuck down in there, held on by what I’m assuming is the same “vintage road grime “ you are talking about. Was wondering how to get at it without causing any damage to the bearings, which are super smooth and whisper quiet right now. I think I’m going to use old tooth brushes dry to get out all the surface stuff and then a very very small amount of 91% alcohol (because it dries so fast) on pointed Q-tips so I can target the grime without actually getting anything “wet”. After seeing this I now know to be very careful not to get any moisture down into the wheel/bearing cavity so I’m super happy this video was available! Hope you are enjoying your skates. I can’t wait to get out on the road with my kiddo as I’ve been looking to buy a quality set of skates for over a year now to get back to skating like the good ‘ol days when I pretty much had skates permanently glued to my feet, like Tootie on Facts of Life! LOL

    Would you recommend rubbing alcohol for cleaning skate wheels? I've been doing this for years w/o any negative effects but some say it dries out the urethane. And what kind of skates are those?

    When should you get a new thing of wheels altogether?

    • @Devaskation
      @Devaskation  6 років тому +2

      When you feel as though the integrity of the wheel has been compromised (chunks missing or the oils have depleted - via heat), or the grip has been completely run down. Usually you can tell when your wheels have had enough, but honestly, it all comes down to feel ;) Some skaters keep their wheels for 5 years! Others change them every season :)

    What about my hyper cannibal wheels w the aluminum hub? And also what's your general opinion on the cannibal wheels?

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 років тому +2

      With aluminum or any type of metal hub, use the "on skate" cleaning method....though I'd opt for Fast Orange, the "smooth" formula. It's meant as a hand cleaner for the automotive and industry workers - really cuts grease and grime - but it's also perfect for skate wheels (quad, skate boards, and inline) as it only take about 45 seconds or less to clean all 8 wheels. As for the Cannibal's, I've heard nothing but great things about them, however, when buying wheels, it all depends on where you skate and, to a lesser degree, where you skate.

    • @MystiqueRisingSun

      No. Water alone won't cut through any of that "gunk" that's built up on them.

    Does this help restore grip

    • @Devaskation
      @Devaskation  5 років тому +1

      Yes! Cleaning your wheels removes all the dirt and grime that has built up on them... Dust and other particles can prevent your wheels from gripping properly, which is why cleaning them is so great! :D :D

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 років тому +1

      Unless you've got the old style wood wheels, they all clean the same. If you want to replace them, look for wheel marked for where you skate (indoor versus outdoor)....it's really not difficult. Simply unscrew the nut and change them. Just don't forget new bearings, too. New wheels rarely come with bearings, unless you get the light up wheels.

    • @ertfgghhhh
      @ertfgghhhh 4 роки тому

      @@MystiqueRisingSun the lightup wheels dont come with bearings. They come with a battery. U still need bearings for them UNLESS there is a new brand that sells bearings with the battery (some sellers offer bearings with wheels on ebay)

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 4 роки тому

      @@ertfgghhhh No new brands that I'm aware of, except the Octo Fothon, but there are many brands that do and many that don't.
      Octo Fothons don't.
      Rio Rollers don't.
      Northern Lights don't.
      Luminous do AND don't - depends on where you get them, but - of course - you *will* pay a little more for them if you want the ones that come with them.
      Crazy Illumin8s do.
      Volcanics do.
      Golden Horse do.
      Sunsets do.
      MonLiyas do.
      Fireflys do . (But DON'T get these, they suck. The dynamo breaks WAY too easily in them, especially for adult skaters!!! They're great for those who weigh around 100 pounds or less...but other than that, steer clear of these things.)
      The only ones I haven't tried...YET!...are the Octo's, Mon's, and the Rio's. All of the others - barring the Firefly - work great. Northern Lights are sold as skateboard wheels (as well as the Sunset and Mon's wheels), but the Sunsets are the ONLY 78A - truly outdoor - wheel on the market. Most of the others are an 85A. Except the Volcanic's - those are approximately an 88A and the Northern Lights (93A - better for indoor use even though they're a skateboard wheel).

    • @EndlessOceans
      @EndlessOceans 2 роки тому +1

      idk if you got any headway on this, but it’s good to use something like a screwdriver or something long and dull (even your nail) to scrape off first layer of dirt. after that, fine sandpaper or a brillo pad to follow. just do it uniformly, don’t stick on one spot too long or you’ll make a flat spot.

    how to clean bearing balls

    • @Devaskation
      @Devaskation  6 років тому +1

      Hey Durgarao, you would first remove the plastic shields from the front of the bearings, but don't remove the actual balls or you will never get them back in. Soaking, and using a shaker bottle will get almost anything out, but canned air or an air compressor will get debris that is still stuck.

    • @Devaskation
      @Devaskation  6 років тому

      We putthe question out to our community and this is what we got back.
      I would not recommend removing shields unless last resort... Soaking in Mineral Spirits will break down all the dirt and should clean pretty damn good... The canned air or air compressor certainly would help a lot....
      Also
      shaking in a plastic Milk jug works good (its what i did for years with mine) - or order our Bearing cleaner bottle we have.
