  • Here's a video I did that shows where the fuel restrictor is on preupdate Waveraider 1100 Triple carbs and the jet and tap size you'll need to replace the drilled out restrictors. I had to hunt around a bit to figure out this info so I thought I'd share it for those looking to do this mod.
The fuel return balance mod eliminates the individual fuel restrictors on each carb and replaces them with a single restrictor after the last carb and before the return line. This balances the fuel pressure among the three carbs and prevents a lean condition due to the default small pin hole size restrictor in the carb getting clogged.

What confused me is that my carb as you mentioned at the beginning already had a restrictor in the nipple BUT also all of the restrictors in the caps where still there. All I can assume is that someone forgot to drill out the restrictors in the caps. The restrictor in nipple seems like a slightly smaller hole than the ones in the caps. Your the only person that I have found that mentions anything about the restrictors but does make since. When I took my carb apart the carb closest to the fuel pump, the restrictor was Very clogged to the point that it looked like it didn't even have one. So this seems to be a good idea.

if you're still on earth, when you say drill out that little pin hole, am I to do that on all three of the covers, or just the one pin hole on Carb 1 (the one that the throttle cable hooks to)?

I'm surprised these carbs don't leak out the return line plate. There is a flaw in the casting (you can see it on the right side at about 2:47) that makes the gasket surface not flat. It's a very noticeable bump and I can't imagine why it should be there. It looks like a flaw and not something designed into the part. I had the same thing on my carbs so I put mine on a glass plate with some 400 grit and circular sanded it until it was flat.

Thanks for pointing that out! I did not notice it. I haven't seen and leaks as a result.

Hopefully you are around to see this question. I'm in the process of rebuilding my carbs. After looking at this video I checked mine. I see the hole that needs to be drilled out BUT there are already a restrictor in the output nipple. Looks like a plastic plug with a small hole in it. SO, does this mean the only thing I need to do is drill out the other restrictor? seems like this has 2 restrictors. At one time did someone forget to drill out the restrictor on mine??? I just dont want to do the wrong thing.

Robert, don’t know what to say for sure. I’ve not heard of that. I’ve also not heard of plastic jets, but that could just be me. I would try to confirm what model of carbs you have to make sure you know what you’re dealing with. Are they special carbs someone installed later or are they special modifications someone made to carbs that came with the ski? It is definitely possible someone did the mod halfway not being able to spot the pinhole restrictors. If you can confirm your carbs are standard or updated models Mikuni had intended for this ski, I don’t see an issue drilling out the pinhole restrictors and replacing the plastic jet with a tapped metal 95. The major concern I have for you is whether or not the carbs are some special performance design that can’t be modified with the balance mod the same way. Knowing your carbs model and determining if it’s the same as the non-updated Mikuni carbs will be key to determining if you can just move ahead and do the mod.

@@forgvn7725 Really dont understand the whole thing. I looked at mine again and all of the caps have a restrictor on the inside AND have the restrictor as I mentioned in the nipple where the hose connects. In the 3rd carb my restrictor was clogged but all the rest looked ok.

Yes, this mod worked fine for me. Only other thing is just make sure after you drill out the restrictors that you wash the covers good to get rid of metal debris.

I have the same ski and after replacing everything still run lean, can you please be more specific about this mod? I can even give you my email so we can go over this step by step, Thanks.

Do I have to put the 95 jet on all the caps or just that one top there?

Isn't the restriction only on the last carb anyways?

I read that there was an update to these carbs. The updated version has the restrictor in the nipple. Are you trying to get ride of the "left turn" bog?

    • @forgvn7725

After you do the mod, the restriction is a single jet after the last carb. Before the mod, each pump cover has a pinhole that acts as a restrictor. It’s that pinhole that can get plugged and cause a lean condition.

Yes, there was an update to the carbs. These are pre-update. I never encountered the left-turn bog before or after the mod.

The fuel restrictions in the carb covers (pin holes) exist to maintain correct fuel pressure and flow to the carbs. The problem is the very small fuel restriction pin holes can become clogged with debris and cause the individual cylinders to lean out killing the cylinder and then the engine. This mod removes the individual fuel restrictions that are in the carb covers and replaces them with a single restriction via a 95 jet that is tapped and screwed into the end of the fuel return nozzle of the last carb. Doing it this way balances the fuel pressure between all three carbs and prevents the individual cylinders from leaning out.
