So a lesbian falls in love with a sport that requires patience and stamina, pelvic flexibility and extreme forearm strength? Will wonders never cease? I mean there’s all that grabbing, cupping, jamming your hand into crevices, seems totally totally foreign.

Two things that were taught to me as a beginner that really helped: 1) push yourself up the wall (with your legs) rather than pull yourself up the wall (by your arms); 2) balance is the most important thing in climbing.

That I'm able to watch this video without crying is a great accomplishment for me! I used to say "someday I'll climb regularly" then I got sick and now I can't even walk for more than 15 minutes... I used to feel so bitter... and the regret of thinking "I'll have time later" ugh... If you want to climb or practice any sports do it NOW you never know if you'll be able to do it _later_

I tried bouldering with my university bouldering society but I was the only overweight gal there and was, of course, immediately intimidated and never went back. I kind of regret it now and wish I had just focused on my own effort and experience, and not how everybody else looked. Quite tired of my weight defining what physical activities I do for fun. Maybe this is a good sign to give it another go, for me and for anyone who feels the same :)

I always say that climbing alone isn’t really climbing alone. After a while, if you keep the same schedule from week to week, all the people you see over and over eventually become friends.
A lot of people see groups of climbers climbing together when they go for the first time, and I think it’s important to note that probably the majority of the people in those groups likely met each other AT that very gym! As someone with pretty bad social anxiety, I can honestly say that the climbing community has truly changed me, and I apply the social skills I’ve learned in the gym in my everyday life.

  • @jolenethesimmer9286

I love this for two reasons: learning new skills is always best when you're learning from someone who remembers what it feels like to be bad at the thing because they have the most tips that made a big difference for them, and second, because I completely relate to the feeling of disliking things when I'm not immediately good at them and I have always found climbing gyms intimidating because I assume everyone there is really good and they must all be judging me for being bad. This inspires me to want to try again.

I've found that people at climbing gyms are super nice 99% of the time. Exactly because it is a solo sport, nobody cares what level you are! It's a supportive environment that I really love :)

Other tip for fellow new climbers - muscle grows and adapts faster than tendons and ligaments! If you push too hard when you're starting out, you can gain strength faster than your connective tissue can keep up with. When I started, going more than once a week gave me all sorts of finger and elbow issues. Nearly half a year in and twice a week is a good rhythm for me. Can't wait to be able to do more, but I get tendon issues when I try. Then again I started from literally no strength (like literally still can't do a pull up or even a push up and I've been trying for 5 months), and I go alone and tend to push myself - if you're starting with stronger fingers, or you're good at taking breaks, or socialising lots in sessions so they're less intense, that helps! Also, do the warm ups, stretches, antagonist training (training the opposing muscles to avoid imbalances, stuff like push ups or opening your fingers against a rubber band), REST when you need to, and don't ignore stuff until it gets worse! Climbers are notoriously bad at this but it's important!

I've learned climbing from my father who did it since he was young and the most important tip he ever gave me is, that in climbing it is a lot easier to not pull yourself up with your arms, but push yourself up with your legs, because they're stronger than your arms and its not using as much energy as climbing with pullings yourself up. Idk if this helps anybody, but it helped me a lot when I started climbing

i went to a bouldering gym by myself for the first time about a month ago and was very intimidated and put off by it, because there were a lot of people there (including kids) and they all seemed to know exactly what they were doing and were already very good at climbing... meanwhile i could barely get a few steps into some of the climbs lol. it made me feel very self-conscious and like everyone was secretly watching me fail at climbing and judging me (thanks anxiety) - BUT this video is making me want to try it again, especially because you said that you were not good at it at first and kept trying anyway, and now you love it! i'm feeling inspired to take a class and see if i like it more once i better understand climbing basics. so thank you for making this, and i'd love to see more climbing content!

Just wanted to add 2 things to the conversation for people who may have their concerns or reservations:
    1. I'm fairly afraid of heights and bouldering has never been an issue for me. The height of the walls does depend on the gym you're attending, and I have been afraid to jump down from the tops in some of the higher ones. That said, a friend of mine has an issue where this is not possible for her, even with smaller walls. If that is the case for you for whatever reason, I recommend starting with easy routes where you should be able to climb down easily and progress from there. You'll be able to judge which climbs you can safely climb down very soon. Just to tie the story together: the aforementioned friend has been climbing 1-2 times a week for a couple of months now and never injured herself.
    2. Safe falling technique: alayna demonstrated it well, but I wanted to emphasise that the most important part in landing from a high fall ist bending your knees continuously while slowly falling over backwards. This way, your legs don't have to absorb the entire impact of your fall at once, but they do so gradually, slowing you down in the process. Besides avoiding pain this way, it is also more healthy for your joints (although downclimbing might be even better in that regard).
This might sound complicated, but you'll pick it up quickly!

This is way more informational and helpful than I expected! I always thought climbing would be super difficult and scary, but your tips make it looks so manageable. I think I want to go try now, even though I have no muscle and am terrified of heights lol. Great video!

I took one rock climbing class about 12 years ago. It wasn't for me. xD I do think it's awesome that you love it! It's really fun watching people talk about something they're passionate about.

This was so helpful!! I tried climbing in 2020 and had a very similar experience of being frustrated with how poor at it I was and didn't want to go back because it was so much harder than I thought. This has really inspired me to give it another go, because even though I still have no strength, I can see how much better I'd be just for using my toes, putting my hip to the wall etc. Really looking forward to trying again!

I've been climbing on and off for about 10 years now. I absolutely love it when new people show up at the gym to try it out. More people need to climb, its an amazing community wherever you go.

Really appreciated this video! I tried climbing once in college and remember loving it immediately and I have always thought about doing it again. This has really inspired me to reach our to gyms in my area and looking at prices for memberships 😁 your lingo tips will likely help me feel less embarrassed as a beginner as well. Thanks girl! You are a badass for truly taking care of your self in this way and with therapy. These are some of my goals. So thanks!

It’s so crazy because I started watching your channel four years ago, right around the time I started climbing as well. Now I have my own climbing UA-cam channel, so this video feels like a big happy circle :)
