Thanks for the great video, you saved my vacation. Got the tool and parts just in time to replace the clutch plates and head off on a 4k trip. If you've ever done brakes, this is a task within your abilities. My '06 had over 40k so I guess this isn't the first time they've been replaced, although it did have the HD plates with rivets, which were all sheared off. Luckily no internal damage and recovered all the rivet ends. My Bartlett ring set didn't have those first three 'special' rings, just the friction and steel rings. Oddly when I went to order the compression tool, the sites kept telling me it was not for my bike, but customer comments assured me it was and it worked like a charm. Thx again.
This is a great educational video. I feel much more comfortable knowing it isn't rocket science. Just pay attention. I'm saving this video for when the time comes
this has been a very educational video. Thanks for sharing. Did you replace the clutch basket on this sportster? You shared that the spring (riveted) plate did some damage. I am just wondering if I order the clutch plate kit from Barnett, if I should order a basket as well. Thanks again for the help.
Great video! I’m having the exact same problem that you said at the beginning. Won’t go into neutral, and creeps in first gear at red lights. Was hoping it was an adjustment issue, but I checked adjustment like 4 times, and readjusted everything just to make sure, no luck. Looks like I need a clutch 😢
Great vid, I replaced my clutch with the extra plate kit, to avoid the spring plate going bad, I did it at 17,000 miles on my 2012 Sportster. Only thing I did different was I replaced the clutch bearing as in my other sports they have gone out at the 30k or so mile mark. I'm surprised there is not a ton of what oil to use. LOL (Barnett says NOT to use Formula Plus I went ahead and use my normal oil)
I have the same bike...paint and all. Where did you get the forward controls? Pretty easy and straightforward...no different than the clutches in an automatic transmission. Thanks for posting.
Took apart a 05 XB12R and clutch pack missing #22 spring seat. Also why does manual say on installation 6.14 to install narrow fiber or B plate first, when other illustration shows spring seat goes in first followed by spring plate? Is this because diameter of narrow fiber plate is larger such that spring plate seat fits inside?
Would a clutch issue allow 1st and 3rd to engage but 2nd to spin? I wouldn't think so that sounds more to me like 2nd gear is gone. Trying to buy a sportster rn.
First make sure that your clutch adjustment nuts are still fully loose. To adjust the clutch, the factory service manual says that you want to tighten (remember, it is reverse threaded so you'll be going left to tighten) it just until you feel resistance and then back off 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn. I found this to work really well for me, but it might require that you play with it a time or two to get it right. I'd suggest not putting the derby cover back on until the clutch feels right to you.
I have a 1985 1000 iron Head with a culch release that is different than any other discontinued part can't fine the order of parts to be assembled on the clutch adjustment
It's the Barnett Extra Plate Clutch Kit, Kevlar version and the part # is DS-223739. Can be found here in either the Kevlar or Carbon Fiber - www.getlowered.com/barnett-extra-plate-clutch-kit-for-harley/
damit! i just broke the basket by using the special tool to release the pressure plate...just staring at what just happened...turned the wrong part of the tool!!! WARNING for DYI!!!!!
Hi, thanks for the video. Been looking at Barnet clutch packs. The only one I can see on their site with the damper plates is the scorpion. Will this fit a standard hub or am I better going for the Barnet extra plate kit. Cheers
Hey Ross - the kit in the link should have everything you need to get the job done, depending on your year and model. www.getlowered.com/barnett-extra-plate-clutch-kit-for-harley/
Great video.Ya gata here this, just bought 2005 1200 14500 miles clutch was making a little noise got worse day buy day till you could only go for a half hour till it got to noisy my health condition does not allow me to lay on the floor to do this because i dont have i lift.ThIS is were it gets good went to the harley dealer told them i would like my clutch replaced with something better they said they needed to evauate the clutch first i palitly asked them do i need to wait till the gernade ring blows.the man behind the counter said, whats that like they dont know.So it ended up like this i said can we just get the fuc.king peice of shit out of my bike before it goes and replace it or not.they said ya i guess so they still have the fucking thing 12 days now bullshit about one piece didnt show up still waiting.been ridding all my life never used a dealer for any work.so needless to say i got some first hand exspearence to why all the people i know hate the dealers.well now i know,it was like a fucking nagosheaiting .wow saw this video just in time before i had a bunch of peices in my hand like other vids i watched
Worst clutch design in the world. Makes me really appreciate my Ducatis. Such a PITA. Unfortunately, I am dealing with a grenaded clutch myself, with just over 10k miles.
Thanks man!! This made changing out my clutch pack and my spring a breeze. Appreciate you taking the time.
Really well done video, so nice to see someone actually taking time to make a proper video.

Nothing worse than a ruined vacation - glad we could help!

For real the best video I could find.

Depend entirely on if it is damaged or not.
Suddenly yesterday on my way home from work all my gears became neutral 😗
Taking a guess and hope it’s easy as this looks 🤘🏻😬
Some of the cause is the heat & possibly vandals.
Where did you get this kit just ordered one and did not come with the first three plates to eliminate the spring plate

Excellent video very helpful. Peter in Australia

What seat is that mate? Thanks for the video , helpful
Great video and so well presented. Thanks so much. All the best !

I've got a Jack Tarmac clutch kit with the spring plate can anyone give information on install
All information would be great.

Good vid. I'll be doing this job soon, I have 21K on my Sport.
me too!
Does it have to be in neutral while you do this?
Would a clutch issue allow 1st and 3rd to engage but 2nd to spin? I wouldn't think so that sounds more to me like 2nd gear is gone. Trying to buy a sportster rn.
Hi, did you replace a primary cover gasket because I didn’t see it in the video!
Great video! Just a question: how can I adjust properly the clutch screw (held in place by the hex plate and spring) on reassembly?
First make sure that your clutch adjustment nuts are still fully loose. To adjust the clutch, the factory service manual says that you want to tighten (remember, it is reverse threaded so you'll be going left to tighten) it just until you feel resistance and then back off 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn. Thank you very much!
you forgot to mention that the you need an 1/8 of an inch of freeplay in the clutch lever :P
So will this same method apply to a 2015 sportster 72??
I have a 1985 1000 iron Head with a culch release that is different than any other discontinued part can't fine the order of parts to be assembled on the clutch adjustment
Does the Transmission need to be in a certain gear,or neutral...or does really matter?
Excellent video.
Video on shift, Paul adjustment on a 2005 Harley Davidson sportster 1200 custom XL
Does that socket for clutch say 1 and 3/14?
Why did you not put the retaining ring in the clutch basket while you still had it on the bench like you did when you removed it?
Waiting on my gaskets, plates and clutch compressor to get here! Wish me luck
Great Video, in depth ,great voice bro , good explanations and tips. Thank you
Hiw do I get the clutch basket nut off if it’s rounded
Do I have to soak the steel plates also in primary oil or just the friction plates
Just friction plates
My kit didn't come with the damper rings. Do I need those? Or are they being reused from original.
What are the Torque Specs bolting down the Cover and Derby Cover? Are they the same, also? Great Vid, thanks!
Cobra Commander, the specs are hand tighten at will you’ll be ok 👍

Great vid ! Made this job eazy
Nice. My bike made it 90K b4 it started to have the exact problem your describing. Now I know what it is and how to fix it. Thanks!
what exactly is the name of the clutch kit that you used and was it a extra clutch plate kit and what is the manufacture number
It's the Barnett Extra Plate Clutch Kit, Kevlar version and the part # is DS-223739. Can be found here in either the Kevlar or Carbon Fiber - www.getlowered.com/barnett-extra-plate-clutch-kit-for-harley/
I just got an email from Barnett saying that none of their extra-plate kits use a damper spring. QUESTION: Which Barnett kit are you using?
Well done, Thank you!
Can't brake loose the hex head bolt that holds the shifter mechanism to the spline. Applied so much torque I started bending the shaft ! Any idea?
Drill it out 😮💨
damit! i just broke the basket by using the special tool to release the pressure plate...just staring at what just happened...turned the wrong part of the tool!!! WARNING for DYI!!!!!
How do you get the diaphragm plate off?
you forgot to mention tightening the chain adjuster. just a heads up. it should only have a 1/2 play.

Great joy guy
You made it sound easy!
Have a 98 1200 custom with 92,000 miles on it , clutch is just starting to slip. I have a Barnett to replace it :) thanks for the vid.
Awesome, glad it helps!
My 06 has 200,000 and the clutch has never been replaced. Just starting to slip.
Thank you

My sportster looks just like the blue one on this video. Mine won’t stay in first gear. Do you have any suggestions?
Hello. What's the signification of your tatoo on your arm? Best regards from France.
No gasket change for the primary cover? Going to replace my shifter shaft seal as well when doing my clutch cable replacement.
And install the clutch on a 1998 Harley Davidson Sportster 883 I still can't get no gear what would cause that
Mine just hit 14,600 miles and the clutch got messed up 😭
Please show me the video
Mine made it 30k
There's no reason why you should take the primary bolts out in criss cross order 🧐
I'm sorry. I do not understand why you removed the basket completely.
Amazon 30 bucks for the clutch tool
No need to remove the clutch basket
Snapring pliers work good for the snapring..
The compression tool is easy to make
your great honey
Aka creeping
Just bought my first harley. Needs a clutch. Seeing this I'm already pissed. How does harley make everything harder than my fucking Italian bikes lmao
Worst clutch design in the world. Makes me really appreciate my Ducatis. Such a PITA. Unfortunately, I am dealing with a grenaded clutch myself, with just over 10k miles.
Helpful video. But if you could talk a little slower that would be even better. Thank you
Pay to have it done
Don't be scared it's just metal and oil
Next time buy an Indian
