Why we’re seeing the worst locust invasion in decades and how Covid-19 exacerbates it | DW Analysis

  • While Asia and Africa are battling their worst locust invasion in decades, the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic could push tens of millions of people even into deeper poverty and hunger. Over 50 million people were already facing crisis-level food insecurity before the coronavirus pandemic began to spread. COVID-19 prevents farmers from offsetting crop losses by doing manual labor in cities because of curfews, restricted movement, and social distancing mandates.

I was living a dangerously destructive life for years. In 2018, on one particularly bad night, I believed I was going to die. In the depth of my despair, I asked Lord Jesus for forgiveness and to my surprise He answered me. His Presence is unimaginably beautiful. My spirit has burst into such powerful flames of love and mercy that it seemed as if I was totally dissolved in Him.
I've never cried like I've cried with Him. We should ask Him for Mercy and help as long as we refuse we are victim to our own pride and the consequences of our own actions.

I have never had the words to describe what I felt when I asked The Lord Jesus Christ into my life but it was an overflowing river of His love flowing through me.My sins just started to come out of my mouth & I couldn’t quit crying.I was completely immersed by His Holy Spirit. I pray others will invite Jesus into their lives.God Bless you!

To the people who are saying the world is about to end: Humanity has been through much worse things over the years. The world had survived much worse things than what we're experiencing now. Also humanity before this generation has been through much worse things. Let's not forget about WW2 which was the deadliest war in history and has killed millions all over the world and brung this world to an apocalypse. Yet this world is still standing, and we are able to do things that people back then couldn't do. This year may be the one of the worst years of our lives ,but We have it so much better than previous generations of humanity. Plus we have to keep in mind that this world is not a perfect place and was never a perfect place to begin with. Let's not lose hope

Cover all food plants with netting propped up on canes and pegged to the ground. That is how I successfully grow all our vegetables and some fruit trees in the back yard here in Melbourne Australia. There are plenty of insects around in the growing season but hardly any holes in plants due to netting. In winter I cover the netting with a clear tarp called Weathershield to keep out the cold, wind and excessive rain. All veggies are grown in raised beds.

  • @harrickvharrick3957

Putting up enormous nets might help stop such a swarm traveling on. But all aspects of it must be designed..: it must have some system to connect the edge of one roll of netting to a next roll and that connects them tight enough for these critters to not be able to pass inbetween. Mere tie ribs won't do, can't be re-used but are one-way instead and are a polluting form of waste on their own - so we must for instance come up with some type of small click-thingy we can design that can be mounted and loosened again with a twist of the wrist - or, hand. Or a variant on the zipper might be an idea; we could even choose small rings on both sides if we can make them line up easily enough and if it is possible to slide a wire through them for connecting both sides of two rolls. Also the nets must be in as wide a roll as is handy, possibly with local transport also mattering at mwx 2½ - 3 meters wide, and we must come up with a system that allows mounting them real high, cause to stop a swarm weer might have to go with heights of 12,15,maybe even 20 meters. Maybe we can come up with aluminium strips, that can be stacked on top of each other, clicking the different lengths into each other like tent poles... maybe we can even make it so that the netting can slide into a groove on either side, and we can put up such an aluminum long 'stick' to keep those nets up every 4, 5, 6 roles of netting? We might also keep the aluminum vertical mounts UP with wires we run from the top on either side to the ground diagonally, as we know it from tents!) It must be industrially made, preferably from NON-polluting materials, and must be state-subsidised as way to finance them. It will take organised and massive efforts that asks for help from everybody to get them in place and mount all them. And then when a swarm might hit and get stuck behind such a long line of netting, shall we use fishing nets to scoop them up? We can't just put a flame thrower onto them, cause that would burn our nets away. If we want to use flame throwers, we would need metal 'NETTING'. There's a lot to think about and work out, and it 'should have been done by yesterday'! But I am convinced that of we truly want it, we are ingenious and powerful enough as humans of good spirits and will to find a way.. find a solution.. and get it done ! ! ! I have also thought of role of netting that are up to 20 meters wide all in one piece. In that case they would have to come folded. The pro would be that we can mount them between posts that are further away from one another, and 'bridge' bigger distances. In that design there would be a rope at the max height that the net hangs from and helps strengthen the net. If we could get away with placing a 'pole' every 20,but maybe even 40, 50 or 60 meters or so, these poles would have to be significantly stronger than in the lighter design idea presented above. In that case, it would be best to have the whole mounted a specialised crew with specialised equipment, such as a 'cherry picker' / scaffold truck / truck with an elevator platform or hoist (hard to find the right word for a layman)..!

I am not an expert concerning ecology, but if these locusts were then "collected" couldn't they be used for some kind of "Proteinriegel" (German term) that locals can produce and sell? It would be just very loud to use this imaginary big hoover having tentacles flying trough the air to suck the locusts. But wouldn't it be an ecological way to get "rid" of the mass of locusts and to help farmers not only for their future but also as temporary business to get back their income? If locusts are eatable people can reduce at least some lack of food?
