    wonderful video..i just love the 722.3 transmission especially the later years up around 1995. they were improved so much. 722.362 from V12 SL600 is a tough strong version of it.

    That fluid looked pretty good. My job looked the same however my rear main seal leaks some oil. Won't be replacing it until the trans goes out.

    How many liters of ATF did you use? Must the converter filled up separately?

    I'm surprised you say the ATF is old because it has a reasonably original colour. When I changed the ATF on my 722.6 I genuinely don't think it head ever been done in 160,000 miles as it was almost black and smelled terrible.

    Hey MMWA, great videos, i have a 91 W124 300CE, have you ever come across a problem where the auto box wont go into reverse unless the rev the nuts off it and then it suddenly jumps in reverse and its fine. Iv followed your video and done the ATF fluid and filter change (Mercedes parts) also changed the vacuum pot on the side, no change. All forward gears are fine. Any advice would be great. BTW i had a wonderful holiday in Perth a few years ago. Im from the UK but my dad was a resident in Perth since 1966.

      reverse is a weak point in these transmissions. The frictions are probably worn down to metal and the piston needs to over extend to apply. I replaced these frictions on my 199 blueblack 300e24 when I first got it. Id be replacing the piston seals also. The reverse is on the back of the front pump and not really a hard job. The removal of the transmission is the hard part.

    I suspect the transmission fluid is not the top quality, and could have caused the wear. Amsoil makes better one at a cost if you can buy online.

    Did you buy one of Kent Bergsma's suggested magnetic drain plugs to try and attract any metal and prevent recirculation?

    • @MMWA-DAVE
      @MMWA-DAVE  3 роки тому +2

      off camera i did test the metal chips, 50,50 mix of ferrous and non ferrous metal, so dead give away its reverse nearing end of life. Don’t need to buy anything from burgsma, can source own neodymium magnet to put in the pan if required.

      Mag Plugs in a Trans are a waste of time anyway, Note the detritus sitting on top of the filter and in the riffles in the trans pan?
      Mag Drain plug wont make a difference and the other issue is Non Magnetic particles.
      If you insist on using this panacea then a good rare earth magnet on the outside of the trans pan will give a fair indication when you pull the trans pan and nothing beats a Pan off filter change and service either DIY or Professional.

    • @compu85
      @compu85 3 роки тому +1

      I stuck some hard drive magnets in the pan of my 722.3. MB fitted a magnet in the pan of some late 722.3 / .4 transmissions, you can find it in the parts catalog under the G Class.

    Hey MMWA, have you done the engine mounts on your w124? I just got mine from Germany and I'll have to do them in the summertime here in Europe. Is it difficult? I know you have to lift the engine from the oil pan. Wish me luck 😂

    • @MMWA-DAVE
      @MMWA-DAVE  3 роки тому

      on my 2 cars yes, this blue 300e is yet to have any significant money spent on it yet but it will come. Engine mounts are a piece of cake as long as you can lift the engine

    Oh, perfect timing. This comes in handy as I have just bought a W124 (finally...) and it’s leaking ATF all over the floor.
    Well of course it had to be a -24v M104.980, as for some reason I tend to fall for these engines, despite they’re not that simple to work on. An M103 would have been an alternative too.
    (Maybe I can say you are partially to blame for this bias, lol).

      I’ll copy the link of a post on Benz World which has a larger description here.
      This particular example originally brought a 722.501 but blew as these tend to do (apparently), and was replaced with a 722.358 -I guess - from a 300E.
      Just a week of ownership and found a puddle under the car. Not sure if a seal or line gave up or I hit sth. Topped of with Valvoline ATF Dexron III (Dex/Mercon) but still have to control the leak and find a solution briefly.

      have a look for the correct part number and once you have it you can generally buy them from online sources. Or do as tim did and just rebuild them with new high quality hydraulic hose and top quality hose clamps. If you want to retain the crimps you can have a hose specialist rebuild them for you. The hose likely will be better quality too.

      I used to do it without one, its not bad on jack stands. you do tend to get ATF all over your arms, face and in the hair though! you can get around this by letting the transmission drain into a large pan over night. (with pan removed)
