Also, I guess as a specific example: I boot up Super Mario 64 and getting the dive vs getting an upkick is infinitely harder. Been rocking this trimui for a few months now, absolutely love it. If it had just a little more power for flawless psp and dc , it would be the perfect hand held
Foe people comparing this to the RG40XX, one interesting bit of data is that 4:3 content on a 5-inch, 16:9 screen equals an equivalent 4.09-inch diagonal, so almost exactly the same as a 4-inch screen.
@@tvshackertrue however, at this price point, how much past PS1 are you actually pushing? Seems like a 16:9 screen is wasted on something that can’t handle PS2, GameCube, etc.
@@legendarymoji I don't think 16:9 is wasted since you can play PSP and Ports, use Moonlight for streaming and use widescreen hacks on PS1/N64/DC. Also for GBA it's definitely the best non-native aspect ratio (since the console is originally 3:2).
Thank you so much for this video! I've recently bought TrimUI Smart Pro for $40 and I was looking for some custom firmwares and other "hacks" for this device and your video is like a dream come true. I bought my TrimUI Smart Pro back when it first launched, and I’ve been telling people that it’s a great handheld in spite of its shortcomings. It’s a juggernaut when it comes to arcade games (both MAME and FBNeo), and fighting games in particular handle well. N64 handles well, and I don’t have too much issue with the analog sticks. I tend to play Wipeout 64 and Mario Kart on it, and I do well on both. The battery life is legendary too; I’ve left mine on sleep mode for less than a week in the past, and the battery life only dropped about 7 percent. I’m glad that the price drop has people considering it more now. I’m looking forward to using CrossMix with it now.
It’s great. One year later, and I’m still rocking with it. I’m just now getting CrossMixOS on it out of curiosity, mostly to see how Sega Saturn handles on it. So if you’re looking for something with great battery life and a lot of options at an affordable price, you can’t go wrong with this.
I just asked about this video last week and like a magician you always surprise me! I'm eagerly awaiting my TSP from overseas and I'm now very excited to get a hold of it. You're the best Russ! Love the content!
Greatly appreciate the video man! I wanted to say that Dreamcast also has Flycast Standalone on Crossmix as well which allows games that may have not worked like MvC2 to work perfectly fine! Also newer TSPs do come with Thermal pads and Downfiring speakers! I've been loving my TrimUI Smart Pro, great compliment to my n3ds XL and just an overall steal for what you can get if for!
My TrimUI Smart Pro just arrived today and I was just looking for a update video from you. What are the odds that you uploaded excatly that video 3 mins ago? =D
Honestly that's about what happened with me when I first started researching these devices to decide on what to buy. I saw his video comparison for the RG35XX, did some more research outside to see if they had a "plus" version and when they did, I thought "I wonder if he has a video" and... yep, sure did. Posted only a day or two before. Sometimes the timing is just perfect. We're all part of a gaming handheld hive-mind, I guess.

when i saw the $55 price i was sold. I was also considering the ambernic SP. I love the screen size and added the protector that you mentioned in the first review. My main target was snes rpg's and on screen its great. I came from using a openpandora so having a little more power with the larger screen is a nice upgrade. Trimui also released SDK so ive also been compiling my own projects as well.
@@joelgrebinsilvestri yeah i got 4 of them, its honestly such a great emulation handheld i couldn't pass them up. i mainly use it for SNES and GBA. it plays others but im mostly interested in them 2 consoles.
If someone from TRIMUI is around, the TLDR summary: - add R3 and L3 - improve chipset/performance so it can run at least 90% of PSP catalog with 2.5x scaling - add 5ghz wifi - keep it below 100$ - DO NOT compromise what is good: screen size, resolution and quality, software experience/CFW compatibility
I bought one of these while you were doing your initial review as the price was already around 50 at that time at least in Europe and I was patiently waiting for the recommendation for custom firmware !
Thanks for this. I’m just getting to know about the world of retro handhelds and I still cannot believe you get all this for a price of a single Nintendo Switch game
So weird that I was just thinking about this handheld last night wondering if it was a good fit for me! Thanks Russ, will check this out to see if it is!
I have been eyeing this handheld on taobao for the past week feeling uncertain about whether to get it because all the decent review videos for it were atleast 6 months old and I felt not a good representation of what the system is capable of with current firmware. Color me surprised when I open UA-cam and see this video. Thanks Russ!
Thanks for coming back to it! I’d been on the fence on this one, wanting something in its form factor but not willing to pay more than $60ish. The speakers unfortunately kill it for me, they sound so awful
Too bad Crossmix was programmed by someone with an awful taste and absolute zero sense of aesthetic, so it's a complete eyesore. Not only that, the programmer used disgusting AI images pretty much everywhere, so i refuse to ruin my device with it. I wish MinUI, the absolutely best looking emulation console CFW, had support for PSP, Dreamcast and Portmaster, but oh well. At this time it's the only good CFW for this handheld, as the OG firmware, Tomato OS and the rest all look revolting.
I’ve been wanting this handheld for a while now, and I think I’m gonna commit to buying it here either today or tomorrow. I do wanna keep growing my handheld collection, and I think this one will be a wonderful addition to it!
Y’all should try the pal aspect ratio for snes games, it covers more of the screen with smaller black bars and it doesn’t seem to affect the look of the sprites.
Great little console. Really love the form factor. Wish it had just a little more power and HDMI output but for the price, its definitely my current go to device.
23 seconds on a cold boot back to your save state is incredible. I've bought these for my 11yo son and non tech savvy wife. I'm going with a TrimUI Brick myself.

I bought this handheld a couple of weeks ago just to pass the time during my downtime at work. But i find myself playing this even at home. I gotta say Im honestly surprised this thing has been surprising me almost every day so far. And I am just using the stock sd card. I havent even installed crossmix yet. for 50 to 60$ i think its worth it. Heck i bought it going into well if it doesnt meet my expectations then im only out that much. But so far its gone well beyond my expectations.
Bought one for $50 and I play it more than my RP4P and RG35xxh. In fact, it's the only handheld I've been playing for the past two months since I got it. It actually fits smoothly in my pocket despite the dimensions because it's very curvy and doesn't have corners that stretch points in my pants. I take it to work and since it has an actual sleep function, unlike the RG35xxh, I don't have to worry about battery.
@@Watamel0n It basically just comes down to price and pocketability. I don't want to toss my Retroid in my pocket and take it to work where I might break it. I also worry about the triggers. Because the Trimui is so cheap and pocketable, I don't care if it breaks, so that adds a lot to the versatility. I've also found that PS2 and Gamecube don't really lend themselves all that well to playing on a handheld with those sticks (ex: Splinter Cell where you can go from moving quietly to full blown sprinting on broken glass and get caught). I much prefer using a gamepad, which just ends up meaning it stays docked. The Retroid is leagues better when comparing device alone, but use-case scenario wound up being a bigger deal for me. But if I had to only choose one to buy and keep and no others, it's the Rp4p.
That's a very good answer. You are absolutely right. I probably wouldn't bring the rp4pro outside whereas I would bring a cheaper device everywhere without worrying. I didn't think about that.
The big advantage of this handheld is how big the screen is compared to others in its price range. It doesn’t have much power, but the bigger screen does look easier on the eyes, especially when you’re actually an older guy who has been gaming since the 90’s lol For anyone looking to play PSP games though, there’s no better device to play PSP games on this price range than getting an actual PSP itself. If PSP and PSX is the main system that you want to play, get an actual PSP instead, much better choice for an average price of sub-$100.
Just got mine yesterday. It's been mostly great so far! I LOVE the buttons. They're like 3DS or joycon buttons, nice and clicky. I slightly disagree with you on the dpad. It's not hard at all to do diagonals, at least on mine. Pretty much identical to a 3DS d-pad. And weirdly, I quite like the analog sticks. Using the right one is a bit impractical for camera movements, but using the left feels fine. I prefer it to my rg351mp analog sticks, at least, maybe because the device is bigger, it might make it easier to use them. The triggers are also much nicer than my rg351mp. My 351mp triggers occasionally don't register, and I have to push them a bit harder, even though the button has already clicked, which is really not nice. Not having to use a wifi dongle is also very nice, although most newer anbernics already have that. Only problems I've had are files getting corrupted when using the USB storage app (but it's fine when transferring over wifi or sd card adapter), and some portmaster games not working (render96ex, balatro,) on crossmix, which is definitely a bit disappointing.
Okay I'm convinced. I'm ordering one. I've been waiting for a cheap, good quality handheld with pre-installed roms that can handle first generation 3D consoles(primarily PS1) and looks like we're finally here. Hopefully with the popularity of this particular handheld there will be further updates and optimisations to the other 3D console emulators.
i have 4 of these and got them for 46 shipped, 3 for my lil brothers and sister and one for me. i love this thing. i got them playing vintage games so much so they now are finding games they never knew they where going to like

Amazing for $55. As someone who has PTSD from trying to run N64 on my PSP back in the day, I think I’ve earned the right not to ever have to deal with the compromises here, but I’m in the market for a side piece for my Miyoo Mini+.
Thanks for the update! My unit is coming from Ali and I was a little skeptical by that mixed feeling about it, but now I think this could be a great deal! I hope it runs well PSP's 2D RPGs like Lunar, Jeanne Darc, FF IV, Tactics Ogre, Valkyrie Profile.
@@derekgonsoulin116 Well, it was beyond my spectations. I had R36S, Miyoo M+, RG35XX H in the past couple of months to resell and Trimui was better in a lot of ways, specially with ergonomics, screen size and battery. Also the community is really good, with launches every month, every week a new Portmaster game is made compatible. I'm had to sell it for a good price, but just ordered another one yesterday, It will be my main portable. Hope you liked it too!
A good tip is to use the silicone case, It helps even more with the ergonomics. And if you're bothered with the back heat, mostly if you don't have the revised console, there is a version of the OG OS with changes that makes the temperature be lower and updated emulators.
I know the focus is on handhelds but I'd love to see some reviews on the plug and play emulators intended for TVs. Thanks for the reviews and honesty. Love the channel and watch videos on devices I never intend to buy.
Not having L3/R3 kinda sucks, but the price and capability of this thing looks really promising, especially with that wide display screen. Keeping this on my to-buy list until I finally decide "yeah man I wanna do it"
hey Russ, great vid as always! Just a note: I am certain that they changed the position of the speakers in the more recent versions of this device, where they are now facing downwards as opposed to the earlier versions.
I haven't opened mine up, but I think I agree. The audio really sounds a lot better than I think you (Russ) experienced. I'm still experimenting with different emulators with N64 since installing the latest version of Crossmix, but overall the game play on this device has made it my favorite, even over the Anbernic and Powkiddy ones I have. I personally love the placement of the Menu button, and the software makes it SO much easier to get to frequently needed features, like Save and Load. I want to learn to do some of the customizations for the interface.
@@joelgrebinsilvestriThere’s no sure fire way to know, as the devices are not labeled (at least on websites) with revision numbers. However, provided you are purchasing it from a place that you will be shipping new stock (in other words, not eBay) such as Aliexpress, you will likely be getting a more recent version. Just make sure the seller allows returns.
One issue with the d-pad is that it can miss fast input switches from left to right or vice versa. Shows up in fast platformers like harder mario levels and makes 100% completing Metroid games a chore if not impossible. The issue with the analog sticks is definitely a weird one as well - you can try doing calibration as fast as you possible can and if that doesn’t work try doing it slow. Also for PPSSPP make sure to change the analog input type from square to circle. I don’t know why it misses fast directional changes but much like the d-pad I think it’s a combo of janky hardware and too slow of polling. DO NOT LEAVE THE FN BUTTON TURNED ON WHEN YOU’RE NOT USING THE DEVICE! It can prevent the cpu from going to sleep and drains the battery while heating up the handheld.
I already have one and already know how awesome it is for PS1 and below + GBA and below handhelds, yet I'm strapping in to watch a half-hour video about it. Whyyyyy? :D

Also, I guess as a specific example: I boot up Super Mario 64 and getting the dive vs getting an upkick is infinitely harder. Maybe it would be good for me to show, but it's a sm64 speedrun thing that allows you to climb slopes in the game. BackwardsLongJumps don't work as well on this device but will work well on others.
This updated review has been a long time coming but I think you picked a good time to do it.
Been rocking this trimui for a few months now, absolutely love it. If it had just a little more power for flawless psp and dc , it would be the perfect hand held
Daes it run wwe , and fiffa street the psp version?
@ThePanachekidd yes at 2x resolution no issue
Foe people comparing this to the RG40XX, one interesting bit of data is that 4:3 content on a 5-inch, 16:9 screen equals an equivalent 4.09-inch diagonal, so almost exactly the same as a 4-inch screen.
But for ps1 (and above), widescreen hacks will allow to take advantage of the extra screen real estate
Previously, my best and main handheld device was RG35XX H but I really wanted to get something with a bigger screen because of the fact that I'm becoming old and blind.
Your video proves that it was a good decision to get TSP. Thanks a lot 🙏🏻
Where did you manage to find 40$ price? I only found 60$ at least
@@timtzs I wrote you specific information about how to get TSP for (now) $44,21 but the comment was deleted by YT, unfortunately. In my country I have a certain app that informs me about such bargains, but I don't know how to give you this info without YT deleting such a comment.
@@skowron_1978 Ah, it's fine, it is Ali Express, isn't it? Thank you for the information anyway.

Seeing the dedication of the team innregards tonfirmware updates and hardware updates makes me very optimistic for the next device that Trim UI releases!
How's the battery life while gaming?
It’s great. One year later, and I’m still rocking with it. I’m just now getting CrossMixOS on it out of curiosity, mostly to see how Sega Saturn handles on it. So if you’re looking for something with great battery life and a lot of options at an affordable price, you can’t go wrong with this.
Managed to grab one for $40 and it’s on its way. I’m excited!
This channel it's so OP, every device it's so well reviewed! Beautifully done
Picked mine up a couple weeks ago. Absolutely love it... literally the best in it's class IMO.
I just asked about this video last week and like a magician you always surprise me! I'm eagerly awaiting my TSP from overseas and I'm now very excited to get a hold of it. You're the best Russ! Love the content!
yay! this was my second portable purchase and have been checking for follow up vids! thanks man!
Greatly appreciate the video man! I wanted to say that Dreamcast also has Flycast Standalone on Crossmix as well which allows games that may have not worked like MvC2 to work perfectly fine! Also newer TSPs do come with Thermal pads and Downfiring speakers!
I've been loving my TrimUI Smart Pro, great compliment to my n3ds XL and just an overall steal for what you can get if for!
can trimui smart pro runs marvel vs capcom 2? dreamcast emulation? does it run well? i love that game and I would like to play it
My TrimUI Smart Pro just arrived today and I was just looking for a update video from you. What are the odds that you uploaded excatly that video 3 mins ago? =D
Mine will be here in a couple hours can’t wait how u liking yours
Honestly that's about what happened with me when I first started researching these devices to decide on what to buy. I saw his video comparison for the RG35XX, did some more research outside to see if they had a "plus" version and when they did, I thought "I wonder if he has a video" and... yep, sure did. Posted only a day or two before.
Sometimes the timing is just perfect. We're all part of a gaming handheld hive-mind, I guess.
@@123ray6 So far its a very nice experience. At the beginning you need to play around with the settings for the emulators, but eventually you will find your way! I hope you enjoy it as well!
@@PNL_Hiro i really am it feels very quality in the hands
when i saw the $55 price i was sold. I was also considering the ambernic SP. I love the screen size and added the protector that you mentioned in the first review. My main target was snes rpg's and on screen its great. I came from using a openpandora so having a little more power with the larger screen is a nice upgrade. Trimui also released SDK so ive also been compiling my own projects as well.
same, i bought 4 of them. my younger siblings love them. i got them a small n100 pc so they can find roms as well. so now they are really set.
@@AlteredCarbons which console? trimui? do u recommend buying it?
@@joelgrebinsilvestri yeah i got 4 of them, its honestly such a great emulation handheld i couldn't pass them up. i mainly use it for SNES and GBA. it plays others but im mostly interested in them 2 consoles.
If someone from TRIMUI is around, the TLDR summary:
- add R3 and L3
- improve chipset/performance so it can run at least 90% of PSP catalog with 2.5x scaling
- add 5ghz wifi
- keep it below 100$
- DO NOT compromise what is good: screen size, resolution and quality, software experience/CFW compatibility
Needs to run 100% of PSP catalog.
Full PSP and L3,R3. Will do.
I bought one of these while you were doing your initial review as the price was already around 50 at that time at least in Europe and I was patiently waiting for the recommendation for custom firmware !
I think this is a big yes for me. Thank you for all the info!
Definitely one of my favorite devices out there! For the given price, this device is really awesome!
The video I’ve been waiting for - thank you!
Omg, I just bought one… great timing!!
Thanks for this. I’m just getting to know about the world of retro handhelds and I still cannot believe you get all this for a price of a single Nintendo Switch game
I bought this device because of your last video on it. I love it! Thank you for all that you do! Seriously, I really enjoy the nostalgia
So weird that I was just thinking about this handheld last night wondering if it was a good fit for me! Thanks Russ, will check this out to see if it is!
And the Brick is here! Hoping that you’ll find time to review the Brick. It looks awesome!
I purchased the Trimui and it has been an awesome experience playing with it. It was very comfortable in my hands. Definitely worth the purchase.
Best value for the money. I hope Trimui releases another handheld similar to the Pro model but more powerful!
Or just ad HDMI out..!!
appreciate for your effort to share the details ... well versed !
Amazing update video. I bought the new version and it's my go to device. I can't believe it's so cheap for what it offers. Thanks for this.
I just ordered one today! Thanks for the awesome review and info on how cheap this was.
Hi!I replaced the joysticks and now they are working fine. No problems so far
Man you're a top top reviewer of retro handhelds. Ive been enjoying your content for a while. Keep it up
I have been eyeing this handheld on taobao for the past week feeling uncertain about whether to get it because all the decent review videos for it were atleast 6 months old and I felt not a good representation of what the system is capable of with current firmware. Color me surprised when I open UA-cam and see this video. Thanks Russ!
Excellent review! It cleared all my doubts, about the device.
Thanks for coming back to it! I’d been on the fence on this one, wanting something in its form factor but not willing to pay more than $60ish. The speakers unfortunately kill it for me, they sound so awful
Nah, they‘re fine.
thank you so much for these videos you're a real help in this retro Journey
The TrimUI + CrossMix is a killer combo 😎
Stock OS 1.0.4 + a few Emulators from Tomato + Portmaster = Best Combi!!
What is cross mix? Thanks
@@joelgrebinsilvestri ?
watch the video...
@@joelgrebinsilvestri maybe try watching the video? 15:29
Noticing this has a feature I've always wished my smaller handhelds like the MM+ and 35XXSP had. A lanyard attachment point.
I just ordered one, im a sucker for these
23 seconds on a cold boot back to your save state is incredible.
I've bought these for my 11yo son and non tech savvy wife. I'm going with a TrimUI Brick myself.
I enjoyed this video. This will be my first retro game emulator. I just acquired a Game Boy Advance and I am interested in playing my childhood games. I'm utilizing your review to make my decision and I'm thankful that you put together this review to help us new to the market make informed decisions.
Never took time to thank you for la channel man... Know about le military background etc and i'm glad that guys like you or Benny (rip) found ways to share passions and knowledge. Merci encore and keep on le good work.
Yay, an update on this. I've been meaning to poke at mine more, and this video gave me just the right kick in the butt.
Why do you use this over the rp4pro? Even if you just play older systems, such as gba erc., the buttons and sticks feel much better on the retroid.
It doesn’t have much power, but the bigger screen does look easier on the eyes, especially when you’re actually an older guy who has been gaming since the 90’s lol
For anyone looking to play PSP games though, there’s no better device to play PSP games on this price range than getting an actual PSP itself.
Only problems I've had are files getting corrupted when using the USB storage app (but it's fine when transferring over wifi or sd card adapter), and some portmaster games not working (render96ex, balatro,) on crossmix, which is definitely a bit disappointing.
thanks for the update i didn't lnow you could do all of that. this is my second retro device. first one was the r36s.
I love when you revisit a device. I dont own this, but i still find it useful
This is my Initial D Street Stage console. I love it.
Portmaster wad a game changer for the device.
i have 4 of these and got them for 46 shipped, 3 for my lil brothers and sister and one for me. i love this thing. i got them playing vintage games so much so they now are finding games they never knew they where going to like

That's a chance to have a CrossMix review from Retro Game Corps, thank you for that! There are still a lot of improvements and features to comes in next CrossMix versions and also a real documentation. Thank you !
Are you the creator of CrossMix?
PortMaster is a little more tricky because it uses openwrt and busybox so it’s missing bash and some libraries, but it works with some tweaking
Yeah Portmaster is only okay on this Handheld.
Shredder's Revenge was a little bit hard to tweak but yea... Now it's runnin and I'm lovin it
@@Pridetoons 1 week with Crossmix inside the trimui and I haven't found a single issue with portmaster or with any of the 60 ports I have tested. 0 tinkering.
I believe newer builds rotate the speakers down, as well as include heat sinks and thermal pads to distribute the heat on the case a bit more evenly.
I knew from the start that I was not going to buy this one (because of all the other devices that I already have) but I enjoyed so much watching the whole video. I think you should put together a mix Playlist to watch during work or for sleep.

I’ve been waiting so long for this video
I went to the classic route of me immediately buying the handheld as soon as I click the video, the i come back to watch the review lol. It’s already close to sold out at this second. I now own a RG35XX H, and a powkiddy v10 that arrived just yesterday. the collection begins haha.

Just ordered mine. Update?
Might have to start saving up this
I know the focus is on handhelds but I'd love to see some reviews on the plug and play emulators intended for TVs. Thanks for the reviews and honesty. Love the channel and watch videos on devices I never intend to buy.
Maybe a Knulli comparison for the TSP would be cool. Improved emulation or worse ? Portmaster still good on knulli tsp?
Not having L3/R3 kinda sucks, but the price and capability of this thing looks really promising, especially with that wide display screen. Keeping this on my to-buy list until I finally decide "yeah man I wanna do it"
I had similar issues with analog sticks. You need to calibrate them. During calibration rotate them really fast, this seems to work best.
I love your detailed video!
It'd be nice to see a comprehensive guide of best devices for PSP emulation
hey Russ, great vid as always!
How can i get the latest version of the device? How can i know that
@@joelgrebinsilvestriThere’s no sure fire way to know, as the devices are not labeled (at least on websites) with revision numbers. However, provided you are purchasing it from a place that you will be shipping new stock (in other words, not eBay) such as Aliexpress, you will likely be getting a more recent version. Just make sure the seller allows returns.
@@sfoldyI just opened mine to check the version, and it's labeled '2023.12.07' and it's the one with the speakers facing downwards
Whyyyyy? :D
I had to do cross mix myself. I’ve tried both public version of knulli and neither time was i able to format my SD using the on-board one and both times I couldn’t get port master to work. I tried MANY times to get this to work and it just wouldn’t. Cross mix just worked right away as soon as I installed it. It’s the best OS rn for sure
Hmmm...this thing is getting quite a lot better for the price. If I don't have the RP 4pro, I would give it a try.
i bought my 1st trimui (black veraion) last march 4 for 57.27usb, then i bought the my 2nd trimui (retro grey) on may 1 for 45.53usd. on my retro grey version the screen is much brighter and the speaker is much much louder. on my comparison base on the performance side my retro grey version plays psp more smoother.
We're you buy it that cheap
About the analog sticks, I calibrate it , and the analog sticks centric games works very well.
