I always thought you could see the animation and were speaking while the animation played, figured that way you could get into the role more. My respect has even grown bigger for voice actors.
It's different for some CG animation. Now for anime, you definitely have the animation playing in front of you. You need to have it playing in order to see the mouth flaps, since you're dubbing over the Japanese. With CG, sometimes the CG isn't even done when you're recording the voice over.
James Arnold Taylor hello there! I got this in recommended 10 years later! And you actually look like a mix between Sir Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor with the beard! You should’ve kept it!
I couldn't wait that long in a small room! Thanks for uploading! It's amazing how much you sound like Ewan McGregor. They couldn't have picked a better Obi-Wan.
Thanks for the inside look at your studio James! I'm planning on becoming a voice actor and your work is a huge inspiration to me! Thanks, and keep up all the great work!
James, when will you be coming back to Texas? My son and I saw you a couple of years at the Star Wars Fan Day, and we did not know you played the voice of Ratchet! You made my son smile that day, because Ratchet is his favorite character. Thanks, James!
Wowee! I've never seen you in action James! You're awesome! Voice acting is a life-long dream of mine and this performance of yours rekindles it! Thanks a lot.
James. I just want to thank you for your performance in Star Wars Battlefront 2. Your death scream is so hilarious I crack up laughing during heroes vs villains and get cut apart but I don't care. Also your force push mantras give me wisdom and peace as you say it with such calm I am calm myself. Quite literally you have saved my life from a stress heart attack. Thank you. I'm in your debt.
i've gotten really interested in voice acting in the last couple of years. Thank you so much for uploading these!!!!!! There exactly what i was looking for. James you freakin ROCK!!!!!!!!! \M/
I want to thank you for uploading these, James. Usually, when I watch or listen to other pro voice actors, I sort of get a little discouraged ("Oh man, I'll never get to that level"). But for some reason, whenever I hear something of yours or see footage of you in the studio, it gives me hope ("Oh yeah, I can totally do this!"). I don't know why, but it's the reason you're my hero. Thank you for being my biggest inspiration.
This is such an insightful look into how voice actors work! I love it :D But damn, waiting so long for a call? I can't imagine why they can't just set an exact timing to do it.
Jeez, I'm an unregenerate slob! **cringes** Thank you so much for your thoughtful answer to my question about your studio setup. I'm looking forward to part 3 of "A Day in the Life...!
Very nice! It's nice to get a glimpse into the job, for anyone who might want to try it! P.S. Your Obi-Wan Kenobi is great :) I don't think they could have picked a better voice actor for him!
@46LCG I personally like to stand, I feel it's better for energy, breathing, and it just makes me feel like I'm earning my keep. Most of us stand but some like to sit, it sometimes can also depend on the character you're doing. I usually have pretty energetic characters and again like the feel of the ground on my feet. JAT
Interesting video James. I can see that voice acting needs to take a lot of patience when it comes to waiting for your session and re-reading your script to get the animation time line right. Overall, this video is very informative, especially those who wants to get into voice acting. I cannot wait what you have in store for part 2.
wow.... now I know more on how voice actors do their job! I will never be able to be a voice actor as I can't concentrate and im really impatient. you are awesome James! :)
Ratchet and clank 1 was my first game. When they changed the voice to you i n 2 I didn't notice much difference but you are one of my favourite voice actors. Personally I think ratchet is your best voice ( Ratchet and clank got me into gaming and I love you being ratchets voice.
@lifevest1 It's called a pop filter. It breaks up any nasty sounds when recording. Besides the quality of the mic itself, this makes a world of a difference. That's why tv show and song audio has such clear and beautiful
Hi james! im a HUGE fan of ur wotk!!! u are increadibly talented! I think u really get into the characters when u play them and u give ur best always! The first time i got to know ur voice was in clone wars, and i became a fan of u ever since! U are awesome man! i love the work u do and i find it very nice that u show us ur daily work as a voice actor in these videos :) i really fell inspired by it as ive always wanted to be a voice actor. thank u for sharing these footages with us :) cheers
Wow. I love this! Any advice can you give to a rookie voice actor like myself? I've been making videos with my voice acting for 3 years now. Also your good friends with Corey Burton? What's it like working with him? and do you know or have you met Frank Welker? Physically?
Ah! I LOVE your Obi-Wan beard! :D Guess I should pry call you Master Kenobi. LOL you can't really loose your script lucky! I was in a Shakspeare play and lost my script a few times. I need to be more careful when I get my script in October for my play in December. Awesome voice studio! I love it! You did an awesome job!!
Looks really interesting, like how voice-acting actually works! Glad you got this up today! :D Seems to be a bit annoying having to repeat a single line several dozen times in a row, doesn't it?
i LOVEW LOVE LOVE you as Ratchet. He is my all time favorite video game character. I have the entire game collection and plan on getting more when they come out :D
THAT shirt looks familiar! :P would that be from the Clone Wars movie behind the scenes...? anyway, quite interesting, I always wondered how this sort of thing worked. It's fun to watch, besides all the waiting. The room is smaller than I thought too. Be nice to work from home like that. I miss those promos, they were fun. I suppose the guys listening mute themselves when you record? be a bit frustrating with all the takes/feedback I bet. Very cool, if I may say, I like the beard a lot.
AAhhh, the glamorous life of a voice actor! Very nice to see the real life glimpses behind the animation. I noticed that you're standing...no chair or stool in sight. Is that a standard setup for voice recording studios?
I know a lot of people has asked you "what's your favorite voice-work" but I've always wanted to know if there's been any work that you felt unsatisfied with. If I come across as rude for asking this, than please forgive me.
You are my role model and I want to pursue the dream of doing what you do.I also hope one day I somehow meet you and we can consider each other friends.I would be the happiest person alive. Please keep it up because what you can do is unique.
what you need when there late is some sorta entertaining thing like a portable tv or playing some Ratchet and Clank lol or just practice or talk to yourself, i do that all the time lol. i hope i work with you in the future with stuff. "Stay Gold" BTO
I've always noticed that microphones used for voice recordings have these things between your mouth and the microphone. Why is that there exactly? is it so air flow from your mouth doesnt mess up the recording or what?
this guy is in definitely one of my top 5 voice actors. he gives obi-wan such charm.
He is pretty good as Tidus and Johnny Test.
+Bailey Deverall +James Arnold Taylor Indeed, He makes him..."The Negotiator" with his Silver toungue and all,I LOVE his Snarkiness as well! ;) XD.
Olivier Bufole I love Johnny Test

I LOVE seeing real talent at work. The raw, un-hidden, real 'in and out' of what an actual gig truly is. Thank you, JAT.
@thelleikvold They were about 15 minutes late. That is pretty common.
James Arnold Taylor hello there! I got this in recommended 10 years later! And you actually look like a mix between Sir Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor with the beard! You should’ve kept it!
Dude you rule, Ratchet , Waldorf , johnny test, are only 3 of my fav characters you voice... Keep knocking them out there man....
I couldn't wait that long in a small room! Thanks for uploading! It's amazing how much you sound like Ewan McGregor. They couldn't have picked a better Obi-Wan.
His normal speaking voice is defo Ratchet and Obi-wan combined! Love him, such talent!!! :D
watching movie now and i must say this is the closest ive heard someone copy the voice, this guy does an amazing job at all of hes voices :)
A day in the life of a voice actor? This is exactly what I've always wanted to watch!
Thanks for the inside look at your studio James! I'm planning on becoming a voice actor and your work is a huge inspiration to me! Thanks, and keep up all the great work!
hi, are you a voice actor now?

Jeez, I'm an unregenerate slob! **cringes** Thank you so much for your thoughtful answer to my question about your studio setup. I'm looking forward to part 3 of "A Day in the Life...!
Wow, I actually got exhausted watching this video xD
Didnt think voice acting could look so tolling.
@WhiteBuddha What a great idea! Perhaps I will cut it in... Too smart of you! JAT
Awesome! Minus the ear blast at the end. Ow.
@convito Thanks Dan, too kind! In the words of Tidus, "See ya!"
Very nice! It's nice to get a glimpse into the job, for anyone who might want to try it!
P.S. Your Obi-Wan Kenobi is great :) I don't think they could have picked a better voice actor for him!

Very cool!
I'm just going to assume Tidus is almost your normal voice.
So cool!
Cool, James!
Awesome voice acting.
AAhhh, the glamorous life of a voice actor! Very nice to see the real life glimpses behind the animation. I noticed that you're standing...no chair or stool in sight. Is that a standard setup for voice recording studios?
With the clone wars and other shows do you guys record sound before they animate the show Thanks,Adam
Did you buy studio foam for your home booth, or did you improvise with cheaper materials?
I know a lot of people has asked you "what's your favorite voice-work" but I've always wanted to know if there's been any work that you felt unsatisfied with.
If I come across as rude for asking this, than please forgive me.
So after using it to record this video, did he eat the potatoe for lunch or save it for later recording use. I hope it's not the latter.
You are my role model and I want to pursue the dream of doing what you do.I also hope one day I somehow meet you and we can consider each other friends.I would be the happiest person alive. Please keep it up because what you can do is unique.
How long did you have to wait before that first session exactly? I would go crazy
All that was missing is the Jeopardy theme during the waiting.
what you need when there late is some sorta entertaining thing like a portable tv or playing some Ratchet and Clank lol or just practice or talk to yourself, i do that all the time lol. i hope i work with you in the future with stuff.

Have you performed any ISDN patches with someone via Source-Connect?

Hey James... have you done a AMA thread for Reddit? I'm sure they'd love to have you.

You should bring a chair in the studio if you have to wait that much :D
Do you still have your Obi-wan beard like in this video? it makes you look alot like Ewan Mcgregor lol
