- Launched my trusty Hobie Outback kayak on a beautiful day along the California coast looking for lings, cabs and crabs. While scoring dungeness was tough, I put my knowledge of seasonal changes and the local bite to convert bait to plate. Watch for a surprise catch at the end!

My 9-year old daughter caught a 27” ling in HMB a couple weekends ago using that same set up with a small blue rockfish. Darn thing hit it within 30 seconds of dropping to the bottom. Her first lingcod and a great one. Thank you captain Danny!

Nice reel. I was recently checking that out but wanted something with more line and a power handle. I ended up buying the Ocea Conquest Limited 400HG. I paired it with a Tailwalk Jigforce SSD C604 rod (JDM model).

I have been wiped out there at that same spot by a monster wave. Stay safe.
i used to surf (well tried for a year then gave up) so i have a partially trained eye for entering/exiting breaks. sometimes you take your time, sometimes you just gotta Leroy Jenkins that sumbich.
By the way there’s some argument online that you cannot use a “game fish” for bait. Others say you can as long as you count it towards your legal limit on the day. Even my local tackle shop said you can’t use “game” fish for bait. So I called California Fish & Wildlife as I had some questions on getting my daughter a lifetime fishing license and I asked. They transferred me to one of their guys who’s not only a marine biologist but an expert on the regulations. And he confirmed: you CAN use live rock fish for bait as long as you count it towards your daily legal limit.
thx for confirming! i know some people prefer smelt herring etc, but there was nothing on the finder all day so used what i had.
@@ishwithfish ...and it worked! If I was a lingcod I know I’d prefer a nice juicy rockfish to some measly herring or stinkin’ jacksmelt. Maybe using that will be what finally gets Jun his keeper ling? Gotta get that boy back on his ling horse! 😆

Damn a 7’4” rod on the yak? Jigging? I used a 7 footer jigging and felt like that was to long lol
The reason 7+ foot rods makes sense on a yak is because one can easily clear the front bow whenever the big fish makes its runs around the yak as it nears the surface.
Especially important on longer kayaks.
Exactly. I don't have to bend forward to clear bow as much, and the length gives it extra bend for trolling in the future🍑
