  • My grandmother taught me to use her treadle sewing machine in 1954 in her adobe house in El Paso, Texas. Years later I lived with her for almost a year, she then owned two treadle sewing machines, and we treadled together. Over the years I owned many electric machines but my first treadle, purchased at a swap meet in 1973, became my old dependable that would sew through heavy canvas when the electrics would not. In 1993, after a turn of events I decided I no longer wanted electric machines and gave away or sold them. By 1999 I decided I had to have a second treadle, like grandmother had, but I couldn't stop at 2 or 3 or 4, they are like potato chips, can't stop. The iron beauties are dependable once they are cleaned and oiled. Treadle sewing machines have a junkyard reputation because they were neglected and are often jammed with lint, thread and dried oils. My book is available on my website. www.treadlelady.com

I recently restored a treadle sewing machine that looks exactly like yours except that it has two drawers. It is an older model, 1873. I've been trying to find the model number. Thank you for giving me a clue for what to look for.

I have this machine but it was either converted into electric or it came with the electric motor. I understand what you are saying about the simplicity of the machine and how truly heavy-duty these ones were made to be. I have most of the attachments for this machine too. I got mine at a garage sale in the 90s on my hunt for an ornate vintage machine. The machine and hemmer set cost me $8! The lady sold it to me because she did not know if it worked because the plug and pedal were cut off and out of a cabinet. After $100 for it to be cleaned, oiled, and new pedal foot and cord it literally sings and sews like a dream! I also obtained a Heavy Duty CG 500C Singer Zig Zag machine. I have pushed the limits on that particular machine. I did update to an Embroidery Machine for that particular built-in functionality. I understand the nostalgia of the older original machines that are true workhorses. Always go back to the originals. Now to get more bobbins and a backup shuttle!

My grandparents had one for as long as I can remember, although I don't ever remember them using it. It's currently tucked away safe in their garage. (dry and insulated) I plan to bring it home, clean it, and use it some.

It's in my house now, oiled and running just fine. It's a 1904 model 27.

I usually take the thread through the tension knob on the machine after the main eye. That holds the tension perfectly without holding onto the thread.

Thank you. I have the 1899 and I was concerned about the sounds the bobbin wonder was making but I see your machine sounds similar

I’ve continued working on my machine and the sound is almost gone. You may want to have the cam assembly adjusted if you machine is still making this sound. Again thank you for this video so I can wind my bobbins properly :)

I am actually learning how to use my newly purchased 1924 Singer Treadle by watching your videos. I am a visual learner so this really helps :) Mine is not useable YET. It had sat for a long time without being touched so it's rusty, dirty and needs a few repairs. I only paid $25 for it at a garage sale, so I'm willing to put a little bit of money into it to get it working like it should. I am just itching to use it! It has taken me A LONG TIME to find someone to fix/clean it.

Excellent video Donna!! I learned so much!! I didn't even know there was such a thing as a shuttle bobbin so kept looking for a regular one until I found you on the internet. I'm loving my new friend. Makes sewing so much fun!!

This is awesome! I now have my great grandmother's Singer No. 27 from 1895 and the last couple of days have been a journey of discovery. I had no idea that the bobbin winder even leaned out. Shall no doubt buy your book and be poking about asking questions as I learn to use the family machine. My mother is no help, she bought an electric Necchi when she married in 1950 and never used her grand mother's machine at all. That terrifying thing spits huge balls of thread if looked at cross-eyed.

Thank you so much!!! I have a this very same model and tried it for the first time yesterday. Used the filled bobbin that came with the machine and had some trouble...maybe it wasn't wound properly. I'll try a freshly wound bobbin to see if it works better. Your videos are wonderful!! Keep them coming!!

I have admired you for so many years now...this is a treat to watch your video....thank you...especially the tip on how to by-pass the mechanical bobbin winder "wand" and do it by hand...if there are problems.....I own three VB's...one a model 27 Singer ..1905...which was well taken care of and has been "tuned' up.....another is a Damascus VB from 1920......and I have a Singer 127....

I have the 1897 singer treadle. Stitches like a dream. I am missing a handle on one of the drawers. Tried to find a one but no success. Thank you for your informative videos

my winder lookes just like the one in the video, and works perfectly! Thought i had a bad shuttle, but turns out once i removed the old thread and followed your instructions above, everything was fine. besides a few dust mice from shuttle and replacing that no longer red piece of felt, that is.

@LadyAnneRutherford If you don't have a thread guide at the bottom right side of the machine: Bring your thread down off the threadholder on top and around to the front so the thread passes under that round knob in front and up the right side and then into the bobbin. By keeping your finger on that knob, the thread will rund from the spool around that knob and up to the bobbin winder, thus keeping the thread tight and your bobbin should wind without any hangup.

Hi Donna, a great source of information, thanks, i just had a singer seamstress given to me; got it going, got it sewing, so far so good. the stop motion screw, however, does not seem to lock in place - when the needle hits a double seam or some other obstacle that i usually have no trouble sewing over with another machine, the stop motion loosens and there's no power to continue the seam. sometimes i just move the needle, but not a cute seam, and it seems to get worse. Can you help?

Do you have a video on a White treadle about shuttle threading and insertion of shuttle into machine.
