    Thanks very much. I just got a White VS IIa (or IIb, circa 1881) and I'm having problems getting started! Glad to see a good instructional video on some basics.

    Thanks so much. I had a long time finding a video on this type of bobbin. It is backwards from the Singer. Our machine is a "Improved New Wilson", and is diferent in some small ways but the bobbin is identicall.

    There’s an online manual for your machine. Mine is the 1890 one and slightly different than yours. I don’t have or know where to get the manual. So far the way I wind my bobbin since there is no adjustment screw on the bobbin winder is to tuck the belt around where the bobbin tire would normally be. So mine has no tire. Won’t work with a tire on it. I see your bobbin winder has the adjustment screw to move it into contact with the handwheel.

      I don't have them. My father had Whites before me and he had done most of the research. Katie Farmer is writing a book on Whites, she would have photos. I can post her email address later from my computer

      There are three good places to look for shuttles, other than searching on Ebay or Etsy. First, TreadleOn is an email group list of people who use handcranks and treadles. Asking on there if anyone has one sometimes works. There are also "flea market" pages, but I believe they are currently not being regularly updated because of illness in one person's family. TreadleOn is here www.treadleon.net/ and the email group is here: groups.io/g/Treadleon Also, Helen , a moderator of that group, has her own website - she is in the UK but ships everywhere I think. www.helenhowes-sewingmachines.co.uk/ and then also there is a man named Jon who is very good at finding and selling all the needles/bobbins/shuttles for old machines- if he doesn't have something, you can email him through Ebay and ask him to look out for something. He is here: www.ebay.com/str/jackssmrepair/Sewing-Pre-1930/_i.html?_sacat=156323&_pgn=2
      My machine takes a shuttle that has a little clip on the side-some Whites takes shuttles that don't have that clip, so make sure to match your own shuttle exactly, or tell any of the three people I mentioned exactly what machine or shuttle you need. :)

    Interesting,,,but I thought the hand wheel on White machines always went clockwise (away from the operator) vs Singers which run counterclockwise,,,towards the operator. Or maybe this is backwards for bobbin winding??

    • @LaurieOMeara
      @LaurieOMeara  5 років тому +1

      The early White machine handwheels move forward - on the VS machines, same as Singers. Other Whites move as you said.

    Where is the best place to look to date these White machines. Im getting conflicting dates that vary quite a lot. Thanks

    • @LaurieOMeara
      @LaurieOMeara  3 роки тому

      The best way is to contact Katie Farmer- she is writing a book on Whites, has all the correct date info, and would love to add your machine to her lists of machines if she keeps one. Her email address is: kf82479@aol.com - but she gets backed up on email- if you don't hear right back from her, give it a week and email her again-

    Hi, love this video. Would you mind sharing what type and size of needle you use? I have the same White treadle sewing machine.

    • @LaurieOMeara
      @LaurieOMeara  3 роки тому

      These machines take a size 20 x 1 needle- the best place to get them is from Jon Helig who sells on Ebay as Jack's Needles... : www.ebay.com/str/jackssmrepair?_trkparms=folent%3Ajackssmrepair%7Cfolenttp%3A1&_trksid=p3542580.m47492.l74602
      I think they come in what I would call vintage sizes- I would have to check mine - a "vintage size 2" might be equal to an 11 or 12. I usually contact him and ask him if he has any for this particular machine and I think I have bought a variety of common sizes - like what is equal to a 11, 12, 14, and then use the smaller size for lighter weight fabrics, etc.

    • @joannpage6691
      @joannpage6691 3 роки тому +1

      @@LaurieOMeara : Thank you so much for responding. I just ordered the needles from Jon Helig. 😁. I wish I could find someone online that could help with the feed dog. If you have any suggestion for someone online, I would really appreciate it. My manual to the machine is pretty torned and I have pieced as much together as possible. It was my grandmothers sewing machine so there is a sentimental attachment to it.

      @LaurieOMeara  3 роки тому

      @@joannpage6691 If you mean the feed dogs are missing? or if they need an adjustment- you can join this email list - groups.io/g/vintagesewingmachinerepair
      and then post a message that you have this machine and you need (specific problem) help with the feed dogs. Everyone on the list is very helpful. If you need a feed dog, that is also the place to ask.

Mine are stuck in "comedy, " and I have tried everything. Even following the UA-cam question and answer section. Thank you. Thank you.

And in the info and setting section, under the photo/video shot,under advanced settings, on the right you will see category and a drop down menu. I went and subscribed to your channel and will go back and watch your videos. I sold my Singer Fiddlebase and will like watching your video to remember my machine. And your Whites too.

      One good thing to do is join TreadleOn- it's an email list of people who use treadles and handcranks, and many of us have Whites. One member on there Katie Farmer is writing a book about Whites as there isn't an awful lost of information easily found online. treadleon.net/ There are a few White pages on there originally posted by the founder of the site, but I think Katie has said those serial numbers may not be complete or fully accurate. Katie can give you the date of your machine, a manual probably if you don't have one - her email address is kf82479@aol.com If I think of some other sites where I have found info, I will let you know-

      Katie Farmer is writing a book on the White VS machines- White let her have access to their files and she has been doing research for years-she is basically the expert on Whites. Recently she announced on one of the sewing machine lists (well, last year) that she is reassigning the VS numbers - mine is a VS IIb but will now be a VSIII I think- I don't think her book has come out yet, but you can email her, tell her the serial number of your machine, and she will give you the date and which model it is. Her email is: kf82479@aol.com

      @@LaurieOMeara I’ve been waiting for this upcoming book since 2016 and I expect I’ll die waiting. Who knows if it will be helpful for a user who simply wants basic information that will allow me to know which model I have, a threading diagram, which shuttle it should have, etc. Would be nice if White would open their files to the rest of us, or post the basics online. I think I have a VS 1, it looks like a VS 1, but it does not use a boat shuttle, it uses a bobbin similar to yours. Perhaps it was modified by a previous owner, I just don’t know. Wish I could see your winder better. The winder that came on my White VS 1? was broken. I replaced it with one that looks like the one in this video, but the brass piece that rests against the winding bobbin (what’s it called?) is backwards from yours and does nothing. Maybe a spring or piece is missing. So frustrating.
