This is wonderfully helpful! I had so much trouble finding this information anywhere else! Thank you 💗!
Did you get you treadle machine going? I would love to see your video!
I was just lucky enough to get my great great grandmas sewing machine from my grandparents house. They were going to get rid of it. I looked up the model number and it’s from 1903! 120 years old!
My step mom just gave me her antique singer. Taking home to clean. Thanks for help.
Just bought a White treadle yesterday and made a temp belt from nylon cord today & was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong with the machine wanting to sew backwards, FINALLY, after searching online all day, a great explanation, Thanks! should have guessed it was me, I like to put the toilet paper rolls on backwards too :)
Wow, Im just thinking about cleaning up and using my Grandma’s Singer 66 - I didnt know there was such a thing as dead center or the intricacies of treadling - she always just zipped along! Thanks - Im sure this will save me and others a lot of grief!
Just picked up a free 1948 Singer 15 treadle machine. Can’t wait to start. Your video will help.
Thank you so very much! Covid times! Staying home but my husband bought me a WONDERFUL machine just like this. He spruced up the cabinet and I got the machine all cleaned and oiled but needed help to treadle. Off to practice! I really appreciate this video!
Thank you so much ❤️ I just bought an old sewing machine and it always wants to go backwards. Your tutorial helps me A LOT to figure out what I was doing wrong.
This is such a great tutorial to start with a treadle sewing machine. Thank you.
Thank you for giving us the full details on how to treadle.
This is the most prevalent type of sewing machine in the tiny Indian village my family is from so most women (and my dad because sewing is a practical life skill) in my family know how to operate these to some extent. I actually ended up learning to use these on a vacation to India when I was 11 while were trapped in a flood.
Oh wow.
Thank you so much. I couldn’t have figured this out without you.
This was extremely helpful, thank you.
I have two treadles, one is 111 years old and works like a dream.
Though I suspect it will work much smoother now i have seen your video. 😀
Thank you so much for this video! I have been having so much trouble learning to sew on my treadle for the exact reasons you were demonstrating. This is going to help me very much! I will probably have to watch a few more times to understand it all. Thank you!
We watched your video and ordered a treadle machine book that shows all the inner workings. My husband cleaned the machine and found gunk in the flywheel and a loose flywheel. He cleaned and tightened everything and I practiced your techniques and now I'm flying!!! It's soooo much fun to sew on it! I also learned how to use my right heel as the break and now most of the time, I don't even have to use my hand to start. I press with my left toe forward and it starts hands free! Wooo Hooo!!! Thanks again!
Your welcome and happy sewing!
Just finished saving a 1917 model 66 treadle machine. Thanks for your great videos! VERY Helpful!
Thank you so much for this video!! I love sewing Victorian clothes, but since I know very little about machines I tend to hand stitch or tentatively use an electric machine for some construction stitches. Now that I know how to use a treadle machine, I can make a corded petticoat without losing my whole entire mind...
My grand parents have one and I think that it's pretty cool and now I know how to work it. Thanks for the advice
Great video. Thank you! I've watched several times to help me master my Domestic Number 3 treadle machine that I meticulously restored. I totally agree with your comment on HGTV and Flea Market Flip; it's disturbing to see the lack of the undeveloped aesthetics and appreciation to restore items to their original glory. Thank you again.
Nice video, I think you've added to the other treadling knowledge available on teaching videos. I only want to encourage you to keep a piece of fabric between your foot and feed dogs at all times to keep them from damaging each other. From time to time you'll come across a foot that's bottom is all chewed up from the feed dogs or a machine those feed dogs have rounded down teeth and that's what happened. It's possible to replace both but easily preventable.
Helpful video. Thanks for taking the time to film it.
This is a great tutorial for me since I am planning to buy a Sewing Machine like that.
Glad to see this I picked up a Minnesota model A with everything it's already sewing and I love it flying shuttle is what I call it but it's very similar to the singer I wonder about these machines..
Thank you for this video. My machine treadle seems to squeak a lot so wondering how to oil it? I have a White Rotary model. Thanks!
Thanks. I just got one of these. Helpful.👍🏻
What a beauty!
Thank you for sharing friend.
That's just like the one my grandparents had. Wouldn't be surprised if they bought it new in 1919.
Thank you❣
Ty
Very helpful for newbie
Very Good!..
i have a hand crank machine and just waiting to collect my treadle machine. thanks for sharing. cant wait to try it out
Thank you just purchased a 1910 singer, looks just like yours, however I don't have the manual, was able to figure everything out but not how to refill the bobbin? Any thoughts?
Thank u
I have this exact model I love it! Thank you so much for posting!! Unfortunately yesterday mine stopped working on me! When I push the pedal the needle and foot don't want to move. If the needle and foot are in the up position it will grab and run but, when I lower the needle it stops completely. It's almost like the foot is the on the little metal teeth and want let it run any suggestions!!
You may want to watch this video on the machine head itself first: ua-cam.com/video/N8LN2IGbxkg/v-deo.html Be sure not to run the machine with the presser foot down without fabric between the presser foot and feed dogs.
Make sure the stop motion clutch is tight and the most important thing to check: make sure the machine is clean and oiled.
Better to save the machine then make a trendy piece of junk. You can get the hand wheel dis-engage to work i think by oiling the hole just in front of the belt cover a bit more. I have several oiling diagrams for all the class 27 machines if you need one for your 127.
The stop motion clutch works quite well on this machine. However, even clean and oiled, it is just a sleeve bearing and the machine runs so light that just a little drag is enough to make it want to turn over a bit.
I think it’s really cool that people upcycle furniture to save it from a land fill not everyone sews but everyone needs a table
@@gavinbiddiscombe1049 there are few antique machines remaining. It's even worse when the machines are functional and just destroyed
I have always wanted one. What should I check when purchasing? Thank you for the video.
How do you feel it is when sewing, that the needle position is actually somewhat to the left of your forward facing stance? I’m wondering whether that’s going to make me sit a bit twisted! Thx for some great understanding in this vid!
I don't really notice it. Back when these were made, some companies, such as Davis and White made 'center sew' machines which were treadle cabinets designed with the machine to the right and the treadle to the left, to force the operator to sit more in line with the needle or to the left of it. I think for most people it wasn't an issue. Singer never made center sew treadle cabinets.
I saw one centred machine one day, it was a 99. So, if you can find a 3/4 size machine, like the 99 which is not as wide, still set in a full sized, standard domestic treadle frame, the belt is in the same place but the needle is then closer to centre.
But I want to use a 15 and a 201 machine , which are full size, so the answer for me has been to find an industrial treadle base, which is about 4” wider, because the industrial machines are that much longer in the arm. That puts my 15’s needle more in the middle.
But I have to have a separate table top to make my own assembly. I’m also going to put risers, blocks of wood, between the top of the base and the underside of the table to improve my working position. I’m 5’10” and keep hitting my knees on the drawer front!
I tried with a more modern treadle cabinet and that was too cramped.
What really surprised me about treadling was how much you have to dip your heel and point your toes. Not easy or comfortable. Perhaps that’s because I can’t get close enough in with my long legs. I hope my ideas will help. I’m going to get great leg exercise doing this!
This is the one my mother had when l was a kid, l stayed well clear of that thing . That needle going up and down looked kind of scary.
*EDIT: This was a weird bug on my end, where the audio track was missing. Ignore comment below* ↓
Why all the long pauses with noting happening? Also need some sort of other context weather it be a quick write up or annotations for some of the scenes..
I'm a visual learner so I am really grateful that you filmed this just really could have used you also talking about what you are showing us..
I had to re-watch the video to catch what your talking about. It looked like I would often explain something and then demonstrate it without talking. That's intentional and is probably part of my style.
@@okbridges Nope, for some reason the audio on this video only was completely silent until I watched it on my phone instead.
The _long pauses with noting happening_ were actually you explaining exactly what was going on. So from my perspective the firs time you would just have the camera pointed at something for seconds of silence!
Sorry for the confusion! Great video! ♥
Glad it worked out, thanks for watching. Technology can be fustrating.
Where do you get your belts made?
I buy the belting material on a spool and cut it to length and use a piece of 12 awg steel wire for the connector.
Most machines will use 3/16" diameter leather.
We will be the next people making clothes.. if all else fails
Ye machine install kaise krte hai plz bataiye mere pass novel ka sewing machine hai
Masheen ke kis bhaag ko sthaapit karane mein aapako pareshaanee ho rahee hai?
Hopefully there is an online users group for White Rotary sewing machines owners with or without treadle who have a hobby gone bad! I purchased a beautiful treadle model, but I think I might need a few parts to keep the belt wheel in place. Any links to share? I also have a White Rotary with motor that is my main go to machine unless I need a bit of zigzag for knits.
I have a couple of White Rotary machines, and a White vibrating shuttle machine in a coffin-top treadle stand. All very good machines! I should do a video on them, all in good time.
There are a few variations on the balance wheel used on the White Rotaries, and I am not familiar with them all. Parts heads are rather common, I would look on ebay or at local antique shops and flea markets for a suitable donor head to turn up.
I found one of these for the wife for Xmas it appears to be in full working order but is it missing its drive belt (if that is what it is called) can you still get them?
Yes, the leather belt is still available. Almost all machines will use 3/16” diameter leather belt. You will have to cut the belt to length and punch a hole near the end for the wire ‘staple’ that joins the belt.
Sometimes sewing machine repair/dealer shops will have the belts for sale, or you can buy it online.
@@okbridges thanks for that
I need help with my Old singer G-2671855, I clean it very nice, but I have problem putting together, the tension, it has many parts I think I put in the wrong direction
Hello, you should watch my video on thread tension. I take the upper tension apart in the last half of this video ua-cam.com/video/BSxSHFBxjUA/v-deo.html
Please let me know if it helps.
Sip banget. Barangnya.
I’m feeling like a big idiot. I just purchased a similar machine and cabinet, but I can’t figure out how the machine drops back into the table. The hinges allow it to tilt backwards, but how does it go down into the table? I seem to be the first person to ever ask this on the internet, so it must be simple, but I just can’t figure it out!
Tip the machine back, and raise the flap along the front edge and lower the machine down.
Xq no cose mi maquina
🙂👍
How to get one of this mahine to buy.
Facebook, there is one in upland for sale right now for $50. I'd buy it but don't think I'd have the patience to deal with the treadle, I've heard more negative about these models so I am a bite scared to purchase one. I see a lot of them on facebook and craigslist dirt cheap. :)
And eBay
There are different type of Singers. Research the different types. Look for round bobbins not the long spindles in a shuttle, like this one So, a 15, 66 or 201. Bobbin holds more thread. And you can buy them easily, and use modern needles.
As Bella Bee says, look for a 15, 66, or 201. The 201, introduced in the 1920's, is the Cadillac of straight-stitch machines, a very smooth running and easy to operate machine. The 66 is also a great machine, introduced around 1902, it is extremely common, and in my opinion easier to thread and use than most modern machines. It was the first machine with the drop-in bobbin, and is the oldest 'modern' machine.
The 15 is a beast and a work horse. Introduced in 1879, it has been widely copied, especially by the Japanese, and has an almost cult following among users.
All of these use needles and bobbins available at nearly any fabric or craft store.
I wouldn't call it inertia with the belt on it, I would call it friction from going past dead center anyway I know you know. Not enough inertia but too much friction..
Need to show how to fill a bobbin and thread the machine. I know how but new sewers might not and different machines thread different I'm finding. I'm fixing my desk top to my Damascus I found out to the road. Machine sews beautifully but they ruined the desk top.
Please see my video on the 127 (and 128) here ua-cam.com/video/N8LN2IGbxkg/v-deo.html
I was going to say that this video is absolutely dreadful, but I'm afraid it is not quite as good as that!
