May 24th 1979. And everything changed. Fifteen years old watching TOTP. I was completely mesmorised by Tubeway Armys performance of
"Are Friends Electric?" I hadn't seen or heard anything like it before. I bet that I didn't blink once.
It wasn't just a song, it was the future 🖤

Same here, I was 11, been a Numanoid ever since. I even got one of Gary’s old Polymoogs, this track got me into playing and collecting synths in bands in the 80’s and 90’s.
Watched Tubeway Army's performance on TOTP & the next day went to the record store & bought the 7" picture disc . 2nd favourite record of all time.
2023 how many are we still listening to this masterpiece? 🤩
One of the few songs that still feels like it's the first time I'm hearing it, it's that good 😂

I was 8 when this came out in 1979 and it blew me away then..Gary Numan and Tubeway Army were so underrated...this song is pure brilliance...so emotive

44 years & the song still sounds great. The first record to have a true impact on the eletronica genre, even though Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, The Human League,Ultravox, Jean Michel Jarre..etc came before Numan. This is just my opinion as this was the first record i bought in this genre.

@@michaelcartwright7171 I was born 17 years after Are Friends Electric was released and it is indubitably the purest definition of a masterpiece. The whole Pleasure Principle album is unbelievable.

This is a great song for sure but for me as when i heard cars for the first time at the age of 9 I personally have to say number one is Cars for sure..
Polymoog, Minimoog and authentic drums, bass guitar and a little lead strums. Awesome

i'm not on drugs you nut, it is obvious that some people don't pay attention to the lyrics...
and that got me curious about 'misheard lyrics' no-one should have a bad attitude towards this.
The lyric is "only". I have the original album with the lyrics printed inside the sleeve.

Loved this album when it was released back in 1979.... It hasn't dated. If anything it sounds better than ever.

@@chancerbox1935I didn't say Cars wasn't a good song it's just it's played to death and I like his other songs that don't get the Recognition like cars does, also if you ask the masses about Gary Numan which song they associate him with it will be cars. He has so many songs that are just as good.

Where did the time go? Still sounds as good today. What a ledge. I remember seeing Tubeway Army on TOTP and actually being a lil bit scared of Gary lol but always loved the music. He's the sweetest guy :)

It's shocking to think this was 40 years ago. It may seem over dramatic but this, Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk, and Joy Division and New Order had a pretty profound effect on popular music.
Numan had a knack for choosing the right synth sounds. I think the main lead is from a Roland SH101. He's never been able to recreate the studio version live which is a real shame. I don't like the grunged up version either. The other patch he used was the Vox Humana from the Polymoog. That was his sound for at least three albums then along came Machine & Soul and you wonder if it's the same artist 😂

Gary was interviewed on R2 today by Graham Norton. This was played prior to the interview and what quality it was. Said to the wife must have been remixed as sounded fantastic over the airwaves.

The original was released in 1978, electronic music explosion began.
Although in their infancy electronic music started on the 1959 sci fi classic "Forbidden Planet" next ones I heard were "Good Vibrations" were a theremin was used by the beach boys and space oddity by Bowie where he used a stylophone. Yeah I guess Gary numan took it to the next level. I saw him in 1996 at V96 although I'm not a big fan (more of a rock fan), still like his music. Top Man. Love this one, we are glass and cars.
