...when you know a song for almost 43 years and still get goosebumps when you hear it
That's exactly right!
Had all
His 70s 80s albums
A future seeing musical genius
You should hear the Basement version.
@@TheSection59 thanks for the hint - but I know it 😉
@@meoma good man :)
Fun fact: you can listen to this synth riff on loop for 200 years straight and not get sick of it
I've recently revisited this song after many years and honestly have been listening to it for days straight now every time I get the chance to play it....in my car...in my bedroom...on the back deck...in the shower...etc!
Right !!!
I've been listening to it for 30 years so far and its just as good as the first time I ever heard it.
This version is even better with that pulsating synth groove that’s thrown in too...amazing.....
EDIT: after another rewatch, I think that’s actually the guitar making that sound, bc it doesn’t sound like there’s any guitar playing along w the main synth riff
It’s that descending tritone, so unconventional yet so tasty, B-flat down to E-natural
How the hell can this guy still sound so good after all these years? Same timbre, same vocal strength. Damn....
Too good...icon
Freak of nature. Gary’s so awesome 🤩
Same key as well! Same as Midge Ure
Numan doesn't age. He just gets more and more gothic as the years go on
Bro he’s 63, he genuinely hasn’t aged wtf
In love
Whatever that is.
What's beautiful here is the not-so-subtle influence of Trent Reznor and NineInchNails in both Gary's look & to a lesser extent, the band's sound. Trent Reznor was influenced by Gary to get into music. The Influenced becomes the Influencer 😇
@@greatbritishedits6602 It’s called having multiple facelifts and hair transplants haha. More power to him.
This has to be one of the most perfectly crafted songs of all time.
Sure ....one of the best song
Wish I was there.
could not agree more!
😎☝🏻✊🏻
Oh cool you found another way of saying "I really like this one song more than others"
I love the way he's managed to bring it seamlessly into the new millenium.
Sounds like a Sugar Babes tribute act. Fans don't go to hear music updated. They go to hear it the way they first heard it. You do this to gather NEW fans, younger fans. It's an insult to those who put him where he is.
@@Dirty_Squirrell no, it's to pay homage to it, while keeping it interesting and fresh.
Now what is wrong with that? Keeps you ,young ,plus good music me 61
This is by far the best version
@@Dirty_Squirrell Did you see the audience? They were comparatively "old". They were "there" when this was a new song. It was a groundbreaking song in 1979. Breaking NEW ground was expected. IMHO Keeping to the old is the opposite of what Numan is about. And I'm an old ass man. I was "there" in 1979.
Geez, I'm watching this in 2024... I bought the single of "Are 'Friends' Electric" back in the day, 1980 or so. And it still sends shivers down my spine. A good song is a good song, regardless of time.
I’m a 48 year old Canadian. Only knew cars from Gary Numan….man, I’ve been missing out. He’s awesome and this song is killer!!
@@ProphetAndLoss Can't seem to find it. YT shows some person flipping through a book of wallpaper...???

No matter how old they get, Numan and Bowie will never feel like aging rockstars.
Robert Smith too...
Smith's neck makes that hard for me.
You do know Bowie is dead, right?
@@myautobiographyafanfic1413 the fact Numan wears a rug & has had plastic surgery spoils it for me. Smithy is who he is, warts & all just as Bowie was.
The fuck are you on Mickey? Bowie won't ever die.
Fact: During the 80s I worked in Burtons mens clothes shop in Debenhams Staines Middlesex. This lovely lady came in looking for jeans for her son and she said I have to buy my sons clothes because he is terrible buying clothes for himself and can never decide what to buy because he suffers from depression and anxiety. She told me that she is his manager and does all his shopping. I sold her some Niko jeans and when signing the cheque she signed it with the surname Webb. Then she tells me her son is Gary Numan. I was so delighted and it made my week. Also a short while after that my Burtons manager told me her boyfriend was the guy in Splogenessabounds who sang Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps Please.
Wow, that's a terrific story! Did you cash that check?
@@bassaniobrokenhart5045 No, it went upstairs to the safe in customer services. 😀
I love this heavier version. The original was great but this... WOW. And the newest stuff was awesome. It's really rare for an artist to keep doing stuff they did when they were much younger and he is doing it and doing it most excellently and also to keep creating is a huge ordeal but Gary is still on top of the game. So talented.
I was 22 thans mnow 62

100% correct.. woweee
He did Metal and Cars live with Nine Inch Nails. His stuff, old or new, is insanely good. I wish more stuff would’ve made it stateside.
Whoever produced these live versions is an absolute goddamn legend. The originals were amazing, sheer brilliance, but they've somehow been brought bang up to date in way that retains the genius of the originals while enhancing and modernising them. It's an incredible achievement.
I agree. This version sounds great. A bit more meatier. But I still love the original as well.
Original sounds better this sounds too poppy
Absolutely! This does deviate from the original, which of course I love...however, IMHO this was a perfect arrangement for a live performance (..and for me, a 'New Wave' cover band. It has a little bit of 'dark funk' in the lower down, which I really like. It should get people dancing, without disrupting the original story & mood, which passes my litmus test.
@@BTODDTHEG Of course, I love the original, but this is a really creative change that really suits a live environment. FWiW, I wouldn't call it a 'pop' influence...more like adding some 'dark funk' in the lower end which gets the body moving more. But, different strokes for different folks, right? 👍😎👍
One of the most important tunes in my life. I was 11 in 79’, and this still blows me away at 54. 🎤🎸🎹👌🕺💙
I was 17 and this tune, and "Replicas", changed my life
@@terryhurley1 Yup. 78 - 81, he was a genius. 🎤🎹🎸🕺🫶
This song is truly timeless. Aged very well. It is decades older than me but sounds like it could be released today
It's amazing contrasting this performance with his early work where he's a shy self conscious young man who's clearly nervous about performing.
Here he's magnificent. He's just eating up the crowd's adulation and exulting in their presence. It's a beautiful thing to behold.
I love the moment where he says "this means everything to me" - having been there when he's done it, it's pretty special. He loves performing and loves his fans.
Gary Webb kept me from killing myself 41 years ago.
Somehow, he, through his lyrics and music, told me there was something more worth exploring
41 years later, I have 8 degrees, innovated in biomedical, industrial safety, education, aviation....
Gary Webb (Numan) has been an older brother helping me along.
Gary Numan is family.
You deserve a Nobel prize, no shit.
We will never know how many lives Gary and his music has saved pulling people out of depression and giving them a Tribe to belong to. ❤

Been listening to it for decades. Always takes me back.
I’m bored at 10 seconds
Got the single in Birmingham, UK, back in '79. A French early teenager in an exchange program with an English school. This tune never left me ever since.
"You see, this means everything to me." *circles his finger to indicate the crowd* ❤
Yes I Agree his fans pay his bills
He does that every time, and he clearly means it. :)
I’ve seen Numan on numerous gigs and he’s without doubt one of the greatest live acts I’ve ever seen . He’s on par with Bowie live and that’s a true compliment . A national musical treasure and legend .
He loved Bowie but the feeling wasn't mutual.
@@Thunderchild-gz4gc I read that story recently and was very surprised. Bowie seemed so cool always. I wonder why he didn't like Gary Numan ? Love David Bowie unconditionally of course. It kinda makes Him seem a little insecure actually. He should have kept those feelings private.
It's cold outside
And the paint's peeling off of my walls
There's a man outside
In a long coat, grey hat, smoking a cigarette
Now the light fades out
And I'm wondering what I'm doing in a room like this
There's a knock on the door
And just for a second I thought I remembered you
So now I'm alone
Now I can think for myself
About little deals
And issues
And things that I just don't understand
Like a white lie that night
Or a slight touch at times
I don't think it meant anything to you
So I open the door
It's the 'friend' that I'd left in the hallway
Please sit down
A candle lit a shadow on a wall near the bed
You know I hate to ask
But, are 'friends' electric?
Mine's broke down
And now I've no one to love
So I find out your reason
For the phone calls and smiles
And it hurts
And I'm lonely
And I should never have tried
And I missed you tonight
So it's time to leave
You see this means everything to me

@@howibecameanartistin100day7 I was a fan of New Wave & Electronic, Synth music in the 80s, and you probably had to been there to experience it. Gary Numan was one of the new innovators of electronic and synth music. It was a different time, and when he was doing his thing, it seemed futuristic, as did Kraftwerk. In those days, we thought that technology would be so advanced, that we would all be flying in cars, journeys into space etc., So this music was the music of the future. It might seem mild for today, but it wasn`t in those days, when the previous era was prog rock, punk, heavy metal, disco.
Gary, the crowd, the band, the lights, the music. = pure energy. Sensational.
I just can't stop listening to this over and over. I don't know how I had forgotten Numan decades ago, but hearing this has given me back a piece of myself that I had lost. It's a strange and wonderful feeling.
Same here!
I feel so blessed to be Generation X. Becoming a teenager in the late 1970s and then maturing into an young adult in the 1980s. The music revolution of that time era was historic. Gary Numan? I'm waiting for the song to come out named "I AM IMMORTAL" - Only Gary Numan could sing such a song.
Ok boomer
Crazy..I said this exact statement to a few friends just yesterday
This version is in my top play list. Don't know how, but he managed to top the original version 40 years later.

I just bought the cd/dvd set from Gary's web site. In a couple of weeks, my neighbors are going to find out what a $7k system sounds like.
Actually, I just tried to hit the buy button using paypal and the redirect ends up at a dead URL. Gary, you should let them know.. you're losing some sales I think.
Show your neighbors the business regardless. I recommend 'Bog' by the Wicked Tinkers. Do. It.
Make your neighbors hate you. Great idea. Oh, and, peace!!
I pumped it up the other day after getting a new EQ and it made my homemade speaker boxes come alive. I have 4 amps, the new one is going to shock the neighbours if I let it pump. I might save it for when I leave and then move out 😁🔊

Young man your listening to 40 years of practice, perfection and real magic.... Supernatural magic!!! I know....I am a high wizard.....
I remember reading some article back in the '80s titled "Gary Numan: Is He Human?"
I'm so, so happy to see GN smiling onstage, after all those years of pretending to be a robot or something made of wires.
No doubt about it: Music is the greatest therapy.
There is before Gary and after Gary... For those of us who get it, we can listen over and over to this music throughout our lives, it never ever gets old, it is ALWAYS fresh, new and exciting. It provides the soundtrack to our lives and speaks to us with different voices at different times depending on what we need. The sound activates us, makes us sad, makes us vibrate and gives us pleasure. You cannot explain it to someone who has not been exposed (infected?). Unless you have spent hours on a Saturday night alone in front of a mirror in your parents basement with the lights off and a flashlight for a microphone screaming "Death Death Death Until The Sun Cries Morning", there is no need to go any further...
One of the only songs I can put on repeat 10 times and never bore of it so many great versions /remixes only other to compare would be John foxx underpass

This song is just astonishingly good live. The guitars go right through you, the synths are amazing, and the contrast between the loud and quiet parts of the song is something else. The recorded version sounds strangely dead after experiencing this. He's one of the best live performers I've ever seen.
Saw Numan twice on the last tour. Phenomenal both times and Persia was brilliant at the last concert.
Insanely classic song, that's rocks as well today as it did then! Timeless memory.
I think I love Gary Numan because he never sold out. He never tried to be the next big pop star. He's as pure and as weird as he was in 1980. Love that.
Numan, at the top of his game.
Loving the heavier sound. I've always thought those quiet 'conversational' segments where creative genius. In the original version they were a subtle transition, in this version they're a great juxtiposition. Brilliant!
I could hear the words more clearly in this version.
iconic voice, iconic song.....................enjoy
It's like wine, the older you get.....😍
The more I listen to this the better it gets , and I have been listening to it from day one
Pure magic

Absolute classic
The original in 79 was great, the updated version is still great. This song is simply timeless !!!
Utter genius.
The gospel according to Numan.
Some of the early tracks in his career including this one, Cars, Down in The Park, have a sound that resonates in most people and draws on the emotions..as it did then it still does so today..Numan is unfairly underrated as a pioneer of the electronic synth music..
These are Gary Numan’s best live versions, ever! 🙂
I saw you twice in Brussels (in 2000 and last monday) and I want to tell that I will always love you !!!!! Quelle belle version accélérée en live !!!
I had the great good fortune of seeing him live at the Hammersmith Odeon. ZZ Top does a great live show, likewise Joe Walsh, and (RIP) Warren Zevon and Stevie Ray Vaughan--great musicians all but nobody holds a candle to Gary Numan live. Bless his heart.
Such great - and timeless- music. I love to see Gary in his recent years being so happy. It makes me enjoy the music all the more when he breaks into a big grin. For anyone too young to remember, he was non emotional on stage for years.
For a while he was king, then the heathens cast him out and mocked, but true genius and creativity transcends time. So now they no longer laugh but hold their heads in shame, averting their gaze, so they may avoid the burning light that would leave them blinded. Gary was always the alchemist and his critics the fools.
Forget the music for a min, every and I mean every interview I've seen Gary do he is just such a nice, honest and humble bloke
So this song is over thirty years old and has morphed from a classic piece of electronica to a venue filing rock tune.
I hope I live to 82 to see what Stormzy has come up with.
Multiple generations in the crowd. THAT is wonderful to see.
love his voice, never changed through the years
I'm glad Brixton academy is still thriving strong thsts one of the great old venues

I found out about Gary Numan through NIN. I am huge fan on them, I am obsessed with Gary now. This is just brilliant, I heard on one of his interviews that The Downward Spiral was a huge inspiration for him to reinvent himself as a musician in this new era of music. I am addicted to your music mister Gary, you are simply the best!!!

Perfect, as always. Next time he's performing here, I'll be brave and go.
I really can't think of a song by any other musician that's greater in concert than this one. I've seen Gary Numan live and I've seen probably half a dozen videos of different performances of the song, and it's this song that grabs and engages everyone in the audience each and every time. I don't remember any other artist who could do that like Gary. Just amazing.
