I met Cathy at the Hollywood Drum show when Potter and the band was on stage; first time I had seen them in their new format--it was great! I wanted to meet her so bad; she finally came out from behind the stage after the show and I introduced myself--she didn't know me in anyway--I put my hand out for a shake--she put her arm around me , gave me a hug and we had our picture taken like that. I still have that photo and treasure it. She was so sweet and kind and wonderful to me , a nobody from Canada, a huge Buddy fan, it was an amazing day. Just love her and the band.

Great idea! That’s what’s missing. But it might have to be a documentary, because it would be hard to find the right actor for that. It would be like replacing Bruce lee in a Bruce Lee movie. And when that happened, you really noticed! The same thing with Buddy, because of the uniqueness, and huge life force they both were. This was a great interview, and is a testament to Buddy as a father, seeing how important Kathy’s message to the world is about her dad.

Dom is the BEST!!! Miss Cathy Rich, always a pleasure to see or hear you. I've met Dom before but not yet you Miss Cathy..... maybe some day. With all of my surgeries and injuries, and being a Drummer, I do have "something" in common with Buddy! I've had six spinal surgeries and a triple bypass almost five weeks ago, and I keep trying to improve my Drumming, but I am light years behind the man that I affectionately call "Uncle Buddy." Thanks and Blessings!!!

I was very fortunate to see Buddy once. He had the flu, running a 103 temp and played his butt off... could not tell it by his playing. Just burned it! I stood about 25 feet away on the side, staring, mouth agape. 😂 A highlight of my life!

I had a similar experience. My father took me to a nightclub to see Buddy when I was 12. I sat on a sofa about 20 feet in front of his bass drum, dead center. After a killer performance, we went over to the entrance to the backstage area to see if I could get an autograph. We were told that Buddy had just had root canal and really wasn't feeling great. A few minutes later Buddy came out. He saw me, then looked at my Dad and then took a minute to sign an autograph for me. An incredible memory.

The "standards and consistency" part of this conversation really strike a nerve with me as being true... more true than most people might think. The first example that became obvious to me as a young drummer was that so many of those recordings were live. Regarding "intensity"... For example, you might think it's "easy" to be intense when you have some of the celebrities mentioned here around. But, as a young man, I sometimes heard/saw him at small, out of the way venues, where the performance wasn't so publicized, and therefore, the crowd was small. He still performed at that same level, and never "threw" a performance, that I know of. Cathy already knows how I feel about Buddy, because there was a time when we could communicate, butI want to say again that those days were truly magical, and the musical world as a whole suffers without his presence. Write the book, Cathy! (and... Looking forward to possibly hearing some of those Ronnie Scotts recordings)

I love Cathy Rich. You ever see someone and there's just something about them that you instantly know you like? That's Cathy. I was watching a documentary DVD about Buddy and, of course, she's in it. Her portion must have been from the late 80's or early 90's, and it wasn't just becuse she was stunningly gorgeous, but there was that intangible - that personality that just shines through. Man, what a life she's had. I saw Buddy at least 3 times, and was just blown away by his playing (I was a Hard Rock drummer, but grew up listening to Jazz and always loved Buddy). I wish I could have seen more of Buddy's shows, with different line-ups through the years. (The band that played on The Roar of '74 was amazing, but so was the late 70's band, and then the band of the early 80's when I saw them a couple times? SSSS-MOKIN'!!! And Cathy got to see all of them! I'm so jealous! 😆
I just wish more young people could experience the Buddy Rich band. I often call Big Bands the Heavy Metal of Jazz, because there is nothing like the power and energy of a great Big Band Jazz group! WOW! When you've got a 15 piece band with 3 Trumpets and 3 Trombones 4 Saxes, maybe a multi istrumentalist (clarinet, flute, sax), guitar, bass, piano - and drums? That's a powerhouse unit! Kids think Jazz is some nice, friendly, quaint music. Yeah, it can be. Or it can melt your face off! Buddy's band did more than their share of face melting, but just when things were about to spin out of control, Buddy would pull things back and play something really tasteful and cool. It was the dynamics of the thing that made the loud parts more impactful. Kids don't understand that, and that's a shame, because this kind of music really needs to live on for generations - centuries - to come. I'm 54 right now, and I'm one of the younger Big Band fans. Think about that.

@@KenAldrich1958 - Well, that's disappointing. Not hugely surprising, but disappointing all the same. Kids with famous parents can often have a dark, nasty side. If what you're saying is true, that's a real bummer.

I don't believe in "the greatest" definition of anyone when it comes to music. Music is about emotions and tastes, and they cannot be ranked. This said, there is no denying that Buddy was amongst the very best ever. A truly exceptional drummer and a legend. I am glad that Cathy is keeping the memory but most importantly the music alive. Kids must know that this music sounds still as fresh and vital as it was when it first came out.

I saw Mike Shrieve play at Woodstock and was right up at the front of the stage so I saw him close up. He was a trained drummer because he held the sticks the correct way. Santana in '69 was a great band to see live and it was the first time I saw really good musicians close up. I wasn't weed enhanced, but the hair on the back of my neck stood up. Music can put you in a place that nothing else can except great sex. The music lasts longer though.

I did not know he had a daughter who is musician too! They said Buddy Rich had bad temperament but from what I learned by watching his interview with Larry King or other shows he seemed very genuine respectful man who truly was passionate about what he was doing and he kept doing it regardless of his health condition and against his doctors advice. Too bad he died at age of 69, world lost a great master drummer.
