Saw Dom at a clinic in Wellington New Zealand in 1994 age 21. I am now 50, still remember him, his power, technical chops, positive kind type. Engaging too. RIP Dom. You were awesome. My mother died of cancer in October, I just returned from NZ back to the UK where I moved to in 2000 for her funeral. Sad time, but onwards & upwards.

A comment about talent; I agree that passion , discipline and hard work can be misconstrued as 'talent" as Lang says--but there is another element that's taken this man to the highest level in drumming/percussion, and that is intelligence. Lang is obviously very intelligent and when discerning very complicated rhythm patterns and time signatures--some people can 'get it ' and others never will. All the passion and hard work in the world will never get you to this level if you are not 'intelligent" . I have been a teacher for over 40 years and I have learned that talent and associated success in any discipline is eventually related to the student's level of understanding. When I listen to Lang on his videos about time and rhythms I am blown away--this is not an average person by any means. Always impressed with this man.

Loved his idea that he doesn't believe in talent just passion, good support, right practicing now teacher's help if you're fortunate but even if your self taught you apply good practicing and in the end determination comes. That great message gives many drummer's the drive to get good. Believing in it's just talent hinders you but if you believe in his system the ski is the limit in your mind and you can be really good if you put in the effort✌

Great stuff. Just one thing about "talent myth"...So many people dedicated their lives in arts or sport but 1 in a billion is Michael Jordan,Maradona,Pastoruis,Buddy Rich...just to name few. They all have something extra that transcends reason, practice etc.All greats are born with inner knowledge/expression and trough endless practice they master it.I can spend 300 years painting but will never be Picasso.

I think it would be great if the interviewer asked the question "What can't you do on the drums that you want to do?" To basically humanize the experience at Lang's experience level. OR "What are you trying to do on the drums that you can't do yet?" At a technical and artistic level.

  • @adambrown8867

Thomas isn't just a drummer. He is beyond a virtuoso. Just being a drummer is what he said he was trying to change to get his drumming to another level & stop being so predictably boring by playing everything the same, as most drummers, for which they have all been doing for decades now it seems to me. Same time signatures, same drum set configuration, same tone & pitches, same tom fills, same snare back beats. Thomas is the only "drummer" I've heard that can literally play anything, like a drummer playing & a percussionist playing at the same time, syncing 2 different time signatures, but it's just him playing live.

Most drummers, are simply being aroused by the (their own) production of endorphins; as the drummer contributes & reacts to a wide range of human and music stimulus, over a number of years in a life, wherein ‘communal associations’ are built, and in Lang’s case here - shared to a ravenous yet vacuous audience.

I disagree with him about talent. That sounds good - however, I've seen the realities of what talent can do and how the lack of it can limit you. I've seen some of the laziest, uncommitted people do some of the most amazing things, and people who spent waaaaaay more time trying to master their craft just fall short.
