Neil Young is a musical genius. His songwriting is so special and his songs speak to everyone. Old man is one of my favorite Neil Young songs. Heart of Gold is also a favorite. The most heart-wrenching song he wrote is Ohio. Thanks so much for your reaction to Old Man. 👏👏🇨🇦
Hi Shawn. Unfortunately is what the song is all about not in this shortened video. Neil explains the meaning of the lyrics in a longer video of this performance right before he starts to play.🙂
I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 77 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.
Toronto born Neil Young is another gold one from here. Fantastic performer, tunes have all been fabulous. 78 and still going...beautiful. great reaction Shawn...🎤🎶🇨🇦
Neil has always been better as a solo act then he ever was with Crosby, Still and Nash and this song is a perfect example of his talent, another great creation video, thank you for sharing with us.
Neil, although very talented, was the third best member of CSNY. Steven Stills was a better guitarist, Crosby was a better producer. They were perfect together with Graham Nash.
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Canadian treasure🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Neil Young is a wonderful performer, his writing & musical skills show through in all his songs. You will have a great time with this artist, the rabbit hole is deep. This song is about the long time caretaker at a ranch that Neil bought a few decades ago (1971), he sees himself in the caretakers & they see themselves when they were his age !! He is very respectful in this song ❤️🩹❣️ Check his official video of ‘ Harvest’, and his heart wrenching ‘Ohio’ and many more great songs. We are very proud of our 🇨🇦🇨🇦 Rocker and his messages to the world as well as his FarmAid performances to help American farmers in tough times & telling governments to do more to help farmers around the world. Happy that you found Neil Young, he is special 🤗☮️ sending love from Canada 🇨🇦
Neil Young is a deep rabbit hole with many warrens. He is a prolific, eclectic genius, the master of the one-note guitar solo. I was fortunate to have seen him live many times and can't wait for his next show.
Neil Young is definitely one of my all time favorite artists, seen him in concert twice and would go see him again many times, definitely listen to After The Goldrush
This song and album, "Harvest," came about following the crazy days of the late 60s, after Neil lived through all the hype around The Buffalo Springfield and then Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. He went solo and mainly acoustic for awhile with the release of this and its predecessor "After the Gold Rush." To me this is still some of Neil's finest songwriting.
My favorite recording of my favorite NY song. You can really feel the emotion. His well-played guitar and his expressive voice are just a tour-de-force. This is what modern folk music should sound like.
The early 70's were a golden moment for Neil Young. Two popular albums, and then he went very eclectic and left his fans bemused. The two albums were After the Goldrush and Heart of gold. I prefer the first of these, though tracks from the second tend to get more airplay. He is definitely one of the greats though.
He actually bought a ranch and it was the old man that was the foreman that the song is about, he usually tells that before singing it. Great reaction!
The ranch is in the Santa Cruz mountains. When I was in grad school at UCSC he would periodically perform in town with little to no advance notice. The local radio station (KPIG) would announce these performances late in the morning or early in the afternoon, and we would drop everything to get into town and get tickets. I was able to see three of these shows over my time there, once when he was performing with Crazy Horse, once with Booker T and the MGs, and once solo.
I have loved Young's music since the first time I heard his music, can't remember which song it was, like a hundred years ago lol. Exceptional singer/songwriter, peace.
Neil Young is The MAN, and does not need overdubs or AutoTune, or anything else artificial to make his music and voice sound just the way he wants it to sound. This video is from a BBC Concert in England where he explains to the audience that he recently bought a farm, called Broken Arrow, and the ranch foreman was an older man and Neil wrote the song for and about him. Neil also has a more rock and roll side, listen to "Cinnamon Girl" and "Rockin' In The Free World" for a taste of that part of his catalog.
I introduced my death- metal loving son to Neil’s music in his mid 20s and he loved his music! This was his favorite song by Neil (mine too) and when my son sadly passed away at age 31 in 2015 we played this song (among other musicians he loved) at his funeral service. Now this song makes me sad but also brings wonderful memories of my Daniel.
This is actually from a live performance from the early 70’s. The studio version is more polished with lap steel guitar, great background vocals and banjo 🪕 don’t miss out! ✌️
Sugar Mountain, Long May You Run, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Out on the Weekend, Keep On Rocking in the Free World, Cinnamon Girl, Heart of Gold , Needle and the Damage Done. These are just a few of his many, many great songs that you should check out.🙂
Shawn, you by now know that this was about a fellow who worked on the farm. But the description isn’t complete without this fact: the _first_ verse is Neil’s character speaking, but the _second_ verse is the point of view of the old man. It makes sense when you read it that way. Thanks and peace!
This is from 1970 in London England on the BBC Television Network. This was about one year after Woodstock. A very young (22yrs old) Neil Young. Who dubbed over the actual real vocals? This is a shame, because the live real vocals to this, are what make this live video so much better than the studio version. Talk about ruining the experience. Not blaming you Shawn, but if you watch the unedited version, you'll see why it's so upsetting. There was no reason to dub this live version. Thanks Shawn
This has not been overdubbed or edited. I saw the original BBC performance when it was first broadcast, and in his intro to the song he explained that it was a new song that he'd just written. And, as he says in the song, he was 24 years old at the time. It did not appear on record until a while after this. Oh, and he was born in 1945, so he was not 22 in 1970.
This is a legendary tune among many by Neil that resonates to so many of us!
Neil Young, Rock God. 😍🤩😍

One of THE **Best Lines** EVER "It doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you" just **WoW**
Pure God given talent. No more like him. Genius!!!!

There is a version of this song on YT where Neil explains the song before he starts singing it

One of the first iterations of the "quiet-loud-quiet" formula that would drive so much music in the 90's notably by bands like Nirvana.

Love Love Love his acoustic live concerts.

Wish he would have watched the standard video and heard Neil talk in the beginning
I said it before.... I can't make it without Neil..♥️🎶
I've always loved his voice. So special.
Love Neil. One of my faves was "The Needle and the Damage Done". Hits home to many people.✌️🙂
I have loved Young's music since the first time I heard his music, can't remember which song it was, like a hundred years ago lol. Exceptional singer/songwriter, peace.
In the longer version with his intro, Neil said that he bought a ranch in California.

Actually Neil has had many sides and styles of music right from his early beginnings. Look at his album After The Goldfush!

@@snakeinthegrass7443 Thank you for the kind words, I miss him every day.
@@SharilynBratton My heart aches for you. I can't imagine 😢
Classic Young.
This is actually from a live performance from the early 70’s.

Yes, this live is great, but the banjo on the studio cut makes the musical background even more special, imo.
Omemee, Ontario's own this man is a legend in Canada and the USA you really need to give his song a listen Helpless is my favorite song from him.
Sugar Mountain, Long May You Run, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Out on the Weekend, Keep On Rocking in the Free World, Cinnamon Girl, Heart of Gold , Needle and the Damage Done. These are just a few of his many, many great songs that you should check out.🙂
You are becoming one of my favorite reactors bro.
Great reaction to a beautiful song♥
**Beautiful**
The entire Harvest album is a masterpiece.
Next should be "Heart Of Gold".
There is a different video of this same performance where he explains about his ranch and the foreman before he sings the song.
"Cinnamon Girl" is a banger.

That performance was from the BBC studio concerts that used to feature many famous artists.
Early Niel Young (late 1960s) is the best!
WELL YOU SURE CAN'T BEAT THESE ( 70-71 ) BBC SHOWS LIKE I'VE TOLD YOU SHAWN 😊52 YEARS AGO😮 AND JUST SO DAMNNNNNN GOOD MY FRIEND! 💯
Lovely performance and insightful reaction.
Great one here love you
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥😎
Thanks for the background on this! Love your reviews paisan!

Joined a small Apprectiation Society in early 80s., as a kid. Bit proud/ happy that myself, realised genius.
Check out " Down by the River " Cinnamon Girl " " Cowgirl in the Sand" too many too list. ❤
Every guy who has ever heard this song thinks of his dad.
Glad I ain't the only one. That's a more personal vibe for me

This is the Massey Hall performance from 1971
This is a BBC performance
I meant reaction and not creation sorry.
