I was 8 yrs old in 1965 and saw this on The Andy Williams Show. I still say this is the greatest live performance of a song ever. Microphones were like that back then and are probably better than the mics now. Old microphone's are in high demand from many current artist's. I'm not aware of Elvis recording this in 1961. I know he did it right before his death in 1977. Hey dad, make sure you turn your daughter into the greatest and most influential band in history. Ask her if she knows who that is. Loads of singers have sung this song but none do it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version was used in the movie 'Ghost' and was great but this live version is stupendous. He had a cold, his parents were in the audience watching him perform live for the first time and he was sick before he went on. Look at the end when he hits the high notes he does not contort his face like other singers do when they hit a high note. He just bites his lip and smiles as if to say I nailed it.

It's funny that you said, "I don't know the dynamics of microphones...", because there are different types of microphones and the most common one is known as a "dynamic microphone". The kind they were using in the video is a "condenser microphone" which operates differently and, though they are often smaller than dynamic mics, they usually have better sound quality. They aren't used much in live performances these days because they are not as rugged as dynamic mics. Condensers are used more in recording studios, along with "ribbon microphones" which are also high sound quality, but more delicate.
LOL! There were plenty of lip-synchers and fakes back then, and bands like the Monkees and even the Beach Boys used session players to record the music that they weren't TALENTED enough to play themselves. And there are MORE talented singers today than there were in 1965, even if they use technology. And of course computers existed in 1965.

This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family, and I believe Angelina evoked the tremendous emotion of longing love Narges has for her twin children and for all the women in Iran. And speaking of family: Further to Andy's comment, Narges' two 17yo twin children had explained moments before Angelina's performance that they hadn't seen their mother in 10 years; her daughter said she couldn't even remember the sound of her mother's voice. Narges' family has suffered greatly outside of prison and in exile in Paris, while their mother/wife suffered in prison.....all on behalf of others. The twins and their father were in the room when Angelina gave her incredibly delicate and moving performance. You owe it to yourselves to give it a listen.

The original song, sung by Todd Duncan was from the 1955 movie 'Unchained.' Three other singers had hits with it before Bobby Hatfield chose it for a solo starting right back in his high school days. When he recorded it as an album track in 1965, Bill Medley (the other brother) produced it, played piano on it and sang backup. Bobby embellished it with runs and added the octave jump at the end which set his version apart...and is something other singers often try to emulate...not always successfully. The microphone was small because there were no electronics in it... it's simply wired to the amps.

The Righteous Brothers did do a lot of covers. Bill Medley, the other singer, did a great cover of Old Man River. But it's also amazing at how well they sang together given the complete opposites of their vocals. They are definitely one of my favorite vocal acts from this era and recorded two of the most iconic songs ever in this one and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'". Both appear in numerous movies.

It's funny that you said, "I don't know the dynamics of microphones...", because there are different types of microphones and the most common one is known as a "dynamic microphone". The kind they were using in the video is a "condenser microphone" which operates differently and, though they are often smaller than dynamic mics, they usually have better sound quality. They aren't used much in live performances these days because they are not as rugged as dynamic mics. Condensers are used more in recording studios, along with "ribbon microphones" which are also high sound quality, but more delicate.
The microphones back then were smaller because they weren't wireless, so no batteries, transmitters and so on.

This was part of the score of a prison movie called Unchained. The singer was a prisoner asking his lady love whether she would wait for him until he was released. That's where the idea of "time moves so slowly" comes in.

In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time".
"Unchained Melody" comes from the film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family.
Knowing this background, the version of this song by Angelina Jordan, at the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize concert truly fits the occasion. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges was, at the time of this tribute, on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian.
We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family, and I believe Angelina evoked the tremendous emotion of longing love Narges has for her twin children and for all the women in Iran.

Great reaction from an adorable father / daughter team! And speaking of family: Further to Andy's comment, Narges' two 17yo twin children had explained moments before Angelina's performance that they hadn't seen their mother in 10 years; her daughter said she couldn't even remember the sound of her mother's voice. Narges' family has suffered greatly outside of prison and in exile in Paris, while their mother/wife suffered in prison.....all on behalf of others. The twins and their father were in the room when Angelina gave her incredibly delicate and moving performance. You owe it to yourselves to give it a listen.

Pretty much everyone knows about this song due to this song being used in the movie called Ghost starring Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg, and Demi Moore from 1990. Neither thought it would be a hit because originally it was only to be an album track. Hits came from single releases. They both did solos on albums and in shows; Bobby brought it to the studio to be his album solo. After it was recorded, Phil Spector decided to put it on the B-side of the single Hung on You.

The original song, sung by Todd Duncan was from the 1955 movie 'Unchained.' Three other singers had hits with it before Bobby Hatfield chose it for a solo starting right back in his high school days. When he recorded it as an album track in 1965, Bill Medley (the other brother) produced it, played piano on it and sang backup. Bobby embellished it with runs and added the octave jump at the end which set his version apart...and is something other singers often try to emulate...not always successfully. The microphone was small because there were no electronics in it... it's simply wired to the amps.

"Unchained Melody" has been covered like a zillion times. Several singers had a hit with it in the 1950's...I think the names Al Hibbler and Roy Hamilton come to mind. The Righteous Brothers did do a lot of covers. Bill Medley, the other singer, did a great cover of Old Man River. But it's also amazing at how well they sang together given the complete opposites of their vocals. They are definitely one of my favorite vocal acts from this era and recorded two of the most iconic songs ever in this one and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'". Both appear in numerous movies.
