Neil is a great songwriter that knows a few things about life. A must listen The Needle And The Damage Done
Michael Cassidy Another great one and so close to his heart with all that had happened to his band members!
Yes, that one hurts but it's brilliant ;)
Yep - love that one, and "After the Gold Rush:.. and also "Long May you Run"... (about a cherished motorcycle) - and in the romantic vein -- "Harvest Moon"...
My brother died of heroin, this song touches me deeply.
The smile on your face is priceless! Makes my day!! Thank you!
So many great songs by Neil. Southern Man, Like a Hurricane, Cowgirl in the Sand, Cinnamon Girl, Don't Let It Bring You Down, A Man Needs A Maid/Heart of Gold live, Hey Hey My My, Rocking In the Free World and I haven't even scratched the surface.
samsbro1952 Great Songs
Hello Samsbro, now you seem to be someone who knows what I know!!!! I have been a NY fan since I was old enough to listen to music!!! Youngest of six kids, is me!!!!! My oldest brother was in Vietnam and we played him home by listening to all those songs you mentioned and many more over and over and over again!!! We would sit in front of "back then the old cabinet stereo and vinyl albums" and I was maybe 9or10 but I loved to sing!! And I promise you I KNOW EVERY WORD TO EVERYONE OF THESE SONGS!! I AM NOW 60yrs AND STILL KNOW EVERY WORD!!! I did indeed sing my big brother home safe and sound from all that ugly and violent shit that should have never happened!!! But, you put these songs in motion for me again, and I can't wait to get all my NY out and smoke a fatty and take myself a trip down memory lane!!! I cry Everytime because of the meaning this has to me.... But I cry harder for all those who's story didn't end like mine!!! Bless you for bringing this to me again!!!!! I AM LISTENING AND I AM SMILING!!!!!!!!!.. NEIL YOUNG YOU ARE TIMELESS!!!!!
Harvest was his best period. Classic Young.
How could Cortez The Killer not be included!! 😂... Im partial to the live version on Weld... So many crunchy tracks on it too
And when he finishes reacting to Southern Man, Daniel should react to Sweet Home Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd's response.
I take it as a mirror image Neil sees himself as the old man and the old man as him Young. I've heard that Neil kept the old man on his ranch as the caretaker till his death. Which to me speaks a lot of Neil's character✌️♥️
Live version. Neil would never lip sync. The music feels real because it is real. He sings about his life and his emotions, his thoughts. Neil is a truthspeaker. The old man, the caretaker, just sort of came along with the property when Neil bought it. So he entered Neils life that way, and stayed.
Daniel, you are a very perceptive young man (I'm 65). I enjoy your dissections.
You are mature beyond your years. Love your facial expressions, the smiles the sadness the understanding. Perfect reaction Daniel
This performance was so hauntingly beautiful.
This is a part of a live concert in a BBC studio, there’s a bunch of other superb tracks on YT from the same event, eg. Heart of Gold.
@@mhgilham not this version, no...it's what Christian said! Why would a Canadian be asking other Canadians if they know about ranches for one thing, ha!
@@actorJSB Hah, I must bow to your greater knowledge then. I'd been going off what, I presume, must be incorrect UA-cam copyright credits (as well as captions). In the past, I'd gotten the idea that they'd used the audio of the Massey Hall performance, but I guess it's just a gross inaccuracy with respect to the credit/captioning.
@@mhgilham Yeah, it seems to be a common misconception, albeit not one I was aware of before today, so we're all learning!! Looks like it stems from the release of the Live at Massey Hall album - there was no video footage of that performance so they used bits from this (and possibly elsewhere) for promotion.
II feel confident that when he wrote "Doesn't mean that much to me
, To mean that much to you", that he wasn't saying something negative to his audience, but rather saying that he was committing to not chasing or being swayed by fame. He was saying that he was going to stay grounded in himself and his music. We certainly can now celebrate that he has lived his life this way and we can all benefit from his body of work.
Thanks for your explanation. The line made no sense to me before, and your explanation makes a lot of sense.
Cowgirl In The Sand and Only Love Can Break Your Heart are my two favorite Neil Young songs.
The studio version has a beautiful slide guitar. By all means, Heart of Gold.
And James Taylor on banjo
It's a pedal steel, but yes, it is wonderful and is the icing on the cake!
I was 20 years old when this came out. I enjoyed the song but it means more to me now that I am 68. I have a completely different perspective, much as my perspective of Pink Floyd's Time has changed.
Not many of today's "artists" could walk out on stage with a guitar, and have the audience in the palm of his hand.
When I was young I was very shy and self-conscious. I don't remember who said it, but I read a quote the went something like. "If you knew how seldom people think about you, you wouldn't be so concerned about what they think." Keeping that in mind helped me a lot.
I heard a great saying the other day: "What other people think of you is none of your business."
I am just 3 years behind you, and I understand what you are saying exactly. I never gave this song much thought until just recently. And my first thought now is how insightful Neil Young was to have written this when he was just 24.
Neil Young is one of the greatest songwriters and storytellers. "Heart of Gold and "Needle and the Damage Done" are only two in his vast catalog of great songs ! ✌❤🌻😷🎶
I LOVE Heart of Gold
Definitely my fave Neil Young song. For years (long before the internet) I thought he was singing about his father. Seemed the obvious conclusion at the time. Having lost my dad when I was 17, it was during my 20s I heard this song and it made me cry like a baby, reflecting on my father's life and finding my way in the 1980s. Here I am in my 60s and I still get choked when Neil belts out the chorus. OLD MAN FUN FACT: When Young released the track, fellow Canadian songwriter Joni Mitchell heard the song and was so moved, she wrote a song in response on her Ladies of the Canyon album. The Circle Game spins a tale of a young man going through the seasons of life, and while poignant it's reflective and a bit more optimistic, and great sing along.
Love love love Neil Young. Please listen to The Needle and the Damage Done and one of my favourites - A Man Needs a Maid. Loving your channel - it’s great to see a young person appreciate good music 🎧 x
Just Neil and his guitar-- magic!!
Love this version of the song... He has a lot of sides to him. Great path to add to your journey
Neil is one of those singer/songwriters that writes and sings from his heart and soul.
Yes he really was that good live! It was at the BBC about 50 years ago now.
this is from 1971 my friend! He's a bit older now, to say the least
Neil Young is one of the all time greats. From his early days with Buffalo Springfield, to CSN&Y, through his long, successful solo career, his spark has ignited so many songs over so many years. He IS the godfather of grunge, being one of the earliest musicians to use guitar distortion to the max. He's done ear bleeding, rip- your-face-off rock and he's done sweet acoustic ballads. In the 2000s he struck a friendship up with Pearl Jam and they did some stage appearances together.
In one performance in Canada, Pearl Jam began Neil's song "Rockin' in the Free World" and built the intensity up to ten, with the crowd rocking. Then Neil walked onstage, the place exploded and the intensity shot up to about fifteen and stayed there for the rest of the song. LEGEND!
Bob Dylan “Mr Tamborine Man” live at Newport Folk Festival 1963 video. I saw a reaction to this, was not blocked. It’s a historic moment.
Neil has been writing and recording for well over 50 years. This is from 1970. He's in his 70's by now and is still going. One of the musical and spiritual icons of all time.
Always forget how young he was always an old soul. Look for his album Harvest we all had it.Thought you would like him.
As for date, this is early 70s - probably 72-ish. Neil is in his 70s now and still going strong. He's released something like 40 albums over his lifetime and he headlines Farm Aid, one of the causes he is passionate about. In addition, he is probably the greatest songwriter of the rock era. His lyrics are amazing and his voice is so clear and perfect, you don't have to pull up the lyric sheets to understand every single word. Neil's electric guitar work is also amazing and most of it is done with one guitar he has owned since the 60s - Old Black, which is so uniquely modified, it has its own Wikipedia entry.
'71.
BBC in concert show from 1971.
Watched him on FarmAid last night. He did Old Man.
This live performance at the BBC was in 1971. Old Man was released as both a single and on the classic album Harvest in 1972. I assume that many in the audience had never heard this song before. A mesmerising performance IMO.
@@robertburke5354 There were other new songs in that In Concert performance, including of course Heart of Gold.
Omg!! Clicked on this faster than I thought possible! Love, love, love Neil Young!! Also CSNY!! So excited for this reaction!!! :)
He’s fabulous live. Love your reactions because I almost always learn something new about the song.
"Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you..."
So many people are people pleasers and care more about what others think about themselves instead of what they think about their own self. RIght.
More Neil - "Down by the River" and "Downtown"
Wow not bad DDR. Great reaction and almost 500 views in the 1st hour. Well done.
That whole show is a must see, not too long either. Perfect for a channel. :)
It's so cool watching you watch this. It really is.
Brilliant artist. 😃👍 heaps of techniques in his playing with great voice.
Great reaction! Back in 1978 when I was in graduate school, I came home for lunch and in my mailbox was a cassette tape made by my friends back home. They knew that I loved Neil Young. Still do. The first song that they played for me was "Old Man." It happened to be my 24th birthday. It brought me to tears. Next was "Heart of Gold" followed by ""Southern Man" and ended with a very long version of "Down By the River" with a never ending ending. At the end of which, they all yelled "Happy Birthday" to me and then needled me by yelling "Neil Young sucks!!! We did these songs for you, buddy!"
Now, I'm the "Old Man" watching you react to one of my favorite songs. These same friends of mine wanted to play Neil Young's song "Hey Hey My MY" at my wedding 40 years ago (I'm still happily married). They wanted to play it as I was to walk down the aisle. [You should react to that song.] It's wild and raw. I think that's why they wanted to blast it at full volume in the church. The Priest nixed it, saying it was secular.music and not in the hymnal. With a lyric like "It's better to burn out than it is to rust" with full distortion at full volume (it was grunge before there was a thing called "Grunge"), they all thought it was the perfect song to send me off to wedded life.
I recommend you checking out his website Neil Young Archives. He's a great dude and from what I've seen of you, you seem like a great dude far beyond your years. Love your reactions and dissections, Dicon.
Electric Neil, Rockin' in the Free World.
For the other side of that tossed coin, Neil's Rockin' in the Free World is his best.
The version with Pearl Jam is fantastic!
Cinnamon girl is definitely a good one
Neil plays a song on a acoustic guitar and he melts your heart..........he plays a song on a electric guitar and he will melt your face.
This man is over 70 now. Look at yourself now knowing you probably will be 70 too. He was in his 20's then. Can you imagine yourself then?
This is a great live solo version. However, I still like the studio version with drums, pedal steel guitar etc.
Yes, that's what I was going to say! The studio version is so much better. Nobody ever reacts to it.
Yes, and it has James Taylor!
Fords_nothere I didn’t know JT played on that. Now I like it even more. 😎
I like the studio version but I actually like this version more. To each his own I guess.
Neil Young studio songs used to get blocked all the time. But yeah the studio version is phenomenally good.
Yeah James Taylor is on banjo
You can see the whole half hour concert of this 1970 BBC TV 'In Concert' show. It's all brilliant. I always thought that the lines ' Live alone in a paradise, That makes me think of two... have two faces to it's meaning. The paradise is his new ranch, which would have more meaning to him if he had someone, a partner, to share it with. And secondly, and this may just be me, the paradise is Eden, and of course home to that famous couple who were expelled. Every relationship has its fall, maybe?
The Brit audience was so polite and reserved.
I just want to say , David that you always had the ear , had the sensitivity to dial in some great songs . Don't know where you are now , but I hope you are happy . Some of us loved your takes on the music of our era . I'm 76 yrd old, and very much appreciated your contribution to music .
I just read through the comments and nobody mentioned "Long May You Run." Back a few years when the Winter Olympics were in Canada, he was asked to open the show. My wife said that he'd sing his big hit "Heart of Gold." I turned to her and said, "If he was an American, that's what he'd sing. But he's Canadian, I think he's going to sing "Long May You Run" for all the athletes to have a long wonderful life. And I was right!!!
Your Legion certainly providing top-shelf suggestions. What a great last couple of days. One of my all-time favorite compositions.
We are doing our best @George Wodicka! We are Legion !!
@@harpermadison8096 Happy and proud to be a fellow patron. ☺
There have been very few performers as versatile and passionate as Neil, and he has reinvented himself endlessly over the years. Take your time to go down that rabbit hole; his song "Powderfinger" would give you plenty of musical and narrative fodder, especially the liver version from 1979.
This was written in 1971 released 1972.
In the film Heart of Gold, Young introduces the song as follows:
About that time when I wrote ("Heart of Gold"), and I was touring, I had also-just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time-I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today. And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avila and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, "Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?" And I said, "Well, just lucky, Louis, just real lucky." And he said, "Well, that's the darnedest thing I ever heard." And I wrote this song for him.
Harvest was one of the great albums from the early seventies. My favorite NY song is Sugar Mountain.
The Ranch Foreman comes with the ranch...included in the deal...the buyer is responsible for his well being. Quite common 50+ years ago in the west.
ps, Pocahontas is one of his classics...the marlon brando reference cracks me up every time.
Oh, I love "Sugar Mountain"! Such beautiful and evocative lyrics! It's one of my favorites! But I love most of Neil's catalog!
Also love "Look Out for My Love" and "Cortez The Killer"!!!!
Try Cinnamon Girl or anything off of Harvest
"The Needle and the Damage" "After the Gold Rush"
After the Goldrush
Canadian born legend 🇨🇦 INCREDIBLE song writer. This is live. Neil is fantastic live. Have seen him four times in concert over the years. ♥️🎼🎶🎵
thank god you did the live performance of this
Neil Young has such an authentic voice. It is its imperfections that give it soul. A haunting song. About realizing what the basic needs of life are- someone to love me, the whole day thru.
Awesome performance. Love his emotion, his guitar playing. I'm 50 now and this song makes me think of my younger self, and also makes me think of my 22 year old son talking/singing to me now. It's very moving to me.
YESSS, HEART OF GOLD IS ON HARVEST! :)
This is a really good version...soon after he wrote it, in London at a BBC live presentation. From the early 70's.
That Martin D 45 sounds great
Wish I had one too
Awesome Daniel!
One of my all-time favorite songs. I found it amazing that someone so young as Neil Young was at the time, could be so in-tune to older people and the circle of life, so to speak. He is amazing.
Great reaction as always Daniel. Harvest Moon is a beautiful song by Neil Young. I highly recommend it.
This was from 1971 so Neil is about 26 years old in this. It's a full set on a BBC program so he's talking to a British audience which is why he says, "I don't know if you have things like that here." at the first of the clip. The whole concert from this show is on UA-cam (see link provided) and he's playing mostly songs from the album "Harvest" Great songs like "Heart Of Gold", etc.
ua-cam.com/video/U6vp1EMnqho/v-deo.html
The old man is Neil Young, and the Neil Young is the old man- that's how I see it... I also see someone already- and more eloquently- typed this, so I'll just go ahead and like that comment and since I already spent the time typing this myself, I'm still gonna click "comment"
This was a tv show in England Broadcast on the BBC. I think this was in 1970 or 71. Wow! Neil Young looks so young in this video. What a great clip. It shows you that you don't always have to have a big sound system, with huge amps, and loud electric guitars, to have a performance like this one, really make an impression on you. One man, and his acoustic guitar can bring a tear to you eyes.
That was a great reaction. It was very cool to have you play that song when I am now the old man. Maybe try “Don’t Let it Bring You Down” live audio from Massey hall 1970. Thanks, Neil has so many great songs, to many too list.
I seen Neil Young in Tampa, 1981 or 82, solo accoustic concert
Love this song. It reminds me of sitting on the sunny patio with my brother Bill. He played guitar and we sang harmonies for hours. He was 15 and I was 18. This song takes me right back there. We lost Bill about three years ago. Tresured memories.
♥️NEIL !
The line, “live alone in a paradise that makes me think of two,” is an allusion to the garden of Eden.
love when neil plays harmonica, acoustic and sings; heart of gold from this same recording is excellent...
Neil was 25 here. Early 70’s. Genius. That’s how folks sounded back then- no auto tune. Pure talent. They came out of the folk ballad era. He was performing this in a BBC TV studio live.
I’m a new sub- I really enjoyed your reaction!
PS: the only live acoustic performance that matches this us James Taylor at the same age doing “ Fire And Rain”.
I think as a young man confronted with a future you too will succumb to it is a stark and jarring realization. My take on this wonderful song
Daniel, glad you finally got around to Neil Young, so much waiting for you. Such a talented songwriter, so Ohio, Southern Man, Tonights the Night, Long May You Run, Pocahontas and Powderfinger are only a few of his great songs that since you love lyrics you'll be able to get into. Take your time, he has HUNDREDS of songs.
Neil Young is Canadian born and is playing live here in the UK. Of course, he was part of the bank Crosby, Still, Nash and Young. He left the band to go on his own.....if you want lyrics and an even better song, try The Needle and the Damage Done.
His shows are like that, he does talk to the audience, I have seen him a lot of times. This is a long time ago, Neil is 74 now. Great song though and he is a wonderful guitar player, it is a timeless classic and I think it would still chart today. This song came out in 1972. Neil often did small clubs or bars under alternate names. I used to see him at a small place in a canyon in Southern Ca. If he was going to be in town I would make a trip out to the bar to see if Neil was going to be showing up. If you were a regular or insider, you could get the info. When you are older there is less and less time, but not less and less to be done, it is a strange thing.
Have seen him several times as well, with Crazy Horse and solo, the first time at Massey Hall in Toronto in the early 70’s. Incredible songwriting and performer
This is LIVE and the best version of the song love you
Agree is a conversation between old and young. I really enjoy your reactions in that you actually get it or at least try to. Rock on.... or should I say Keep On Rocking In The Free World
He'll always be Young.
😂
There's an MTV Unplugged with Neil that is awesome.
yes, it is a great concert!
THIS is music. Clean and raw. Just Neil and his gutiar. Other songs from this concert have Neil playing gutiar and harmonica. Also so good
Really excellent and perceptive commentary and reaction to this iconic song by Young. I’ve listened to it for decades, but I never knew so much about it until I heard your reaction tonight. Thank you!
Yes, you should react to Heart of Gold. Good stuff. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you so much. I now know Neil Young was a great artist. Thank you so much!
Neil Young, one of Canada's greatest treasures.🇨🇦.
Another great singer from back in the day. So many memories with this one, and thrilled you are enjoying Neil's music. I remember the first song I heard by him was called "Sugar Mountain", back in 1969. My friend and I just hitchhiked back from Boston, and I was floored when I heard his voice. If you have a chance give it a listen. I've heard a few people think it was about drugs, but according to Young it is about losing the idealism of youth, and getting older which refers to the line "You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain.
I was lucky enough to see Neil Young live .. I almost cried when he played Old Man love.
This is from the album Harvest.
Harvest is my favourite album, the whole album is just beautiful ❤️
I saw Neil at The Gorge in WA state and Blind Melon and Pearl Jam played before him. Neil came on with PJ playing backup. Had a great experience! My nephews and friends loved it and still say it was one of thier favorite concerts. Thank you for playing,
Your comment that it didn't "sound live" is interesting. To this day I feel that music filmed/played at BBC Studios always sounds phenomenal, imho.
Agree! Such a intimate setting and acoustically perfect room, with state-of-the-art tech!
The BBC did a great job back then. Neil, Joni, James Taylor all had amazing solo performances that year on that set.
@@Hartlor_Tayley yes, Carole King and Gordon Lightfoot too. What a year for singer/songwriters, eh!
Joe, the Carole King performance is phenomenal, including an outtake of Way Over Yonder with one of members of Jo Mama.
Joseph Simpson-Bushell wow I haven’t even seen those. It’s amazing that these performances exist at all. I commend all the people that made it possible for us to enjoy 50 years later, in such good quality.
This generation has the ability to interact with the older generation, YT gives you a way to do it, since you don't know who is on the comment section. My generation had only two ways to know anything about these bands Radio and the Record stores. We didn't have older people guiding our browsing history, showing us Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, except family members (see the opening to the movie "Tenacious D" with Meat Loaf as his dad) LOL !! WE want to Rock
So are you indicating you couldn't go see acts in person?
@@mhgilham Not until I was 16 and just so has it, it was 1976 what a year for music
@@supercudaone Whoa, indeed it was . . .

Neil Young is awesome! One of the only artists who didn’t sell out commercially. Started in Buffalo Springfield before he joined C, S, & N., then formed Crazy Horse. Now legendary.
oneof the best live vocal/guitaer/songwriter performances of ALL time...perfectly organic and no bull
Neil Young has a ton of great songs: "Cinnamon Girl," "Mellow My Mind," "Like a Hurricane," "Southern Man," "Don't Let it Bring You Down," "Unknown Legend." "Powderfinger." He's one of my favorite artists of all time.
I can't get over how young people know nothing about such profoundly talented and rebound artists such as Neal Young. That said, what a treat for them and it makes me deeply happy that they are finding this music now!
This arrived in the 70s. Neil Young was a person that as we learned the guitar, our go to. We could figure out the chords and lyrics at a decent speed.
I think you'll enjoy his electric side too, with tunes like "Cortez the Killer" and "Rocking in the Free World".
Neil Young, the conscience of a generation. He was all about the music. He played with several bands. They would start to do things for commercial success and Neil would be like, it's about the music, I'm out. This was about the ranch hand on his place. The old man lived the rest of his life out on Neil's place.
Neil, a young man with an old soul...
Great singer/songwriter and guitarist, with the ability to sound brilliant whether acoustic or rocking electric. Would recommend you exploring more of his stuff from solo, with Crosby Stills and Nash, also with Buffalo Springfield and with his regular band Crazy Horse. Was fortunate enough to see him live while working at Wembley Arena in London. Great concert
The singer-songwriters or folksingers made a great effort to be "real" with their lyrics and their presentation. It was part of the "back to the land" movement which I think is now making a comeback. In his introduction he's literally talking about buying a ranch to get back to the land.
This one was released in 1972, on his album "Harvest", which was his biggest commercial success I think, so he was about 27 years old at that time. I would love if you would react to "On The Beach", another great Neil song!
"On the Beach" is an amazing song! Of course, just one of SO MANY great Neil songs!
The studio production is amazing! I love that there is an included banjo playing along with Neil!
I remember listening to this when I was oh so young and can understand how Neil feels it is incongruous to play it now. This time listening to it it made me think of the Eagles line, 'she never thought she''d be alone. This far down the line...'
