Milwaukee M12 Blinking Lights Problem Fix

  • Is your M12 tool blinking a Christmas light pattern at you sometimes when you try to use it? I may just have the solution for you.
I saw a post on the Garage Journal where someone was having an issue with their M12 Fuel Impact where it would blink at them when they pulled the trigger. The Milwaukee tools use blink codes to indicate that the tool has identified a condition in which it should not run.
Some of the possibilities are when the battery is too low, when the battery is overheating, or when the tool has stalled. After investigating the contacts on my tool and battery a little bit I discovered that if the tool cannot read the temperature sensor in the battery, it will not run.
By putting tape over the terminal I can simulate a condition where either the tool or battery contact are corroded and not making a good connection.
If you are intermittently getting this issue, it may be a good idea to check out the contacts and clean them if necessary. It is a very cheap and quick thing to try to fix an expensive tool. You've really got nothing to lose.

*Awesome impact **MyBest.Tools** Takes tires off in a second. Plenty of power for what I’ve used it for - rotating tires. Using it on 3rd setting for removal and 2nd setting for tightening lugs.*

I used ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4ynqaujg7rZKFapA8s29kTpRszJGa3-K this for the first time today to replace the front wheel bearing on my rwd 98 dodge dakota. This had absolutely no issue removing or reinstalling the lug nuts and it took off the axle nut without any struggle. Sounds like it's got some muscle to it. Time will tell

This is a great tidbit, what ended up happening with my M12 is that the contact in the battery was pushed in, I bent it out with a little ice pick and it works great now because it wasn't making full contact. 👍🏻

I had done your test procedure into my Milwaukee m12 hex two speed screw driver, having an intermittent problem of starting & not starting, even if the battery is fully charged. I just cleaned contacts on the battery terminals and into the tool itself. It works and try several times. I really appreciate you uploaded this video and really help. Thank you so much and have a good day.

I have the M12 multi tool, the oscillating tool. I was putting in fresh batteries and got blinky lights. Your video helped me a lot! I bent the inner temperature lead down a bit to contact the battery more and everything works like new! Thank you for the help!

Good tips! Great video! Sometimes the battery is just too warm. I recently had this happen with the 18v system. The battery was in a leaf blower, and it was about 75 and sunny... Hence my reason for visiting this video. I took it inside, out if the sun and let it cool off. It was working again in no time.

Used this trick on a 7+ year old drill. It worked like a charm. Once I took the drill apart I could see that the temp contact was cracked and not lining up properly. Used some crazy glue to put it back in place, and sure enough it worked. Thabks for the upload!

We have a 3/8” impact and the terminal seemed to not be very far bent out. We used a small pick and bent the terminal out. That seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for pointing in the right direction!

Thank you very much for your VERY helpful instructions. I had this problem intermittently and then I'd tap the tool and no "Christmas lights" until I press the trigger again... With your info, I inserted a long flat screwdriver in the drill and moved the temperature tip (clip) in the drill slightly forward. Most likely, it was not making good contact before. I no longer have this problem! Thank you so much for saving me the hassle of the return.

Glad this helped you get your tool fixed! I think the design of the M12 contacts being as small as they are and just sticking out unsupported means they sometimes get a little bent and don't make good contact. Maybe in newer tools Milwaukee will make some slight change to fix these issues but they are sometimes pretty simple to solve yourself.

great job brochacho! my brand new M12, never used, did the Christmas lights thing today on the first lug nut of my flat tire. it is a Christmas present from my wife. I had the battery from my light in it...not the original smaller sized one. I will look closer at the contact and also try different batteries.

Worked for me, thanks for the video. I had some black residue probably from some melted mastic pad on the inside of the drill and on both the battery contact and the temp contact. I could move the battery around and the drill would work depending on how far the battery was pushed in, after cleaning no issues.

Wow. Thank you!!!! I actually called Milwaukee tech support and the guy said I needed a new circuit board. I pressed him a bit, saying is there a contact that might be intermittent because when I snap the same battery back in, it usually works. No go with him. "There are no replaceable parts. You have to replace the control board." $100 later, I still had the same problem. This is really sucky of Milwaukee. I will check what you said here--it all makes sense--and report back. But you are aces in any case, because throwing away good parts is not only expensive and frustrating but wasteful. Let's get back to smarts, common sense, and repair-savvy.

I have a brand new 3/8 extended reach ratchet kit. The 12v battery that came with it has acted this way since I bought it. Thanks for the tip. I don't know that the contacts would be bad but I don't what else to try. I bought a 4 amp battery to use and have never had one bit of problem with that battery. Ok, I just came back from checking my battery if I knew how to add a picture I would. YOU WERE RIGHT! That one tab was pushed out of alignment, once I got it back to close to the others it works great. Thanks so much for showing us this little tip. Excellent job!

This guy has a lot of smarts I have been having this issue and I use these tools professionally especially the 3/8 ratchet and long ratchet this worked on everyone of my tools the only thing I could add is you may have to squeeze the prongs to make better contact when battery is installed due to excessive removal and installation of battery the terminals can wear or bent to where they don’t make great contact with the terminal at all times but over all great video and thank you for the help

Thanks for sharing this. I have a M12 Long Reach ratchet that is doing this. I took a look at the contact in the ratchet and it looked clean because the tool is almost brand new but I cleaned it anyway along with all the contacts on the batteries. None of my other M12 tools have this issue so it's got to be something with that long reach ratchet only. Hopefully cleaning the contact did the trick. It's seriously annoying when working on a vehicle and that ratchet keeping failing over and over again.

Hi, I found your clip interesting because I am having problems with the flashing lights.
I did as you suggested and cleaned the T terminal on both the battery and drill/driver and sorry to say it didn't help. This happens with both of my batteries. Batteries are not hot because the tool is kept in the trunk of my car and it is winter now. It usually starts happening after being used for 10-15 min, not constant use.
looking forward to your input before I send it in for repair.

+Defender Chassis Diagnostics and sensors are my bread and butter at work so I do think about this a lot. I wish I could find a service manual or something from Milwaukee that describes the blink patterns. I was thinking of faking up a battery so I could vary the temperature and voltage and test some of the tools to see what they do at different voltage levels and temperatures. Thanks for watching.

My lights would flashed and not work. I would end up taking the battery in and out a couple times until the lights didn't flash and then sometimes the impact would work with very low speed or torque. I ended up bending the small metal terminal in the drill slightly for a better connection with the battery pack. Put a battery in and had full speed and torque like when I first bought it! Thanks a lot for the video and help!

Thank you! I'm not sure if you still check these comments or not but I just had to post my appreciation. A couple of weeks ago I bought an m12 Milwaukee ProPEX Expander tool on Craigslist. I buy a lot of Milwaukee tools on Craigslist. Never had an issue with any tool but this expander. I got it for 80.00, they run 400.00 new. The one I bought didn't come with batteries. Just the tool, 3 tips, charger, grease and the hard case. Met the guy, he used his battery to show me it worked and i bought it thinking I got another steal. I get home and slide in a battery and get the blinking lights. i tried 7 other batteries...same thing. The 8th battery worked for a few times and then the blinking lights. I have been searching for an answer with no luck until your video. As you suggested, I sprayed contact cleaner inside the handle to the heat sensing contact and sure as hell on the batteries work! I bet the guy who sold me the tool new this problem was going on. Why else sell for 60 bucks? I have over 20 different m18 and m12 tools. Any problems I have in the future I will search for you. Thanks again, Ken.

I've been wanting to make some more indepth videos about how the Milwaukee battery system works and how to troubleshoot it because I think a lot of people out there are probably having issues with their tools that may have a simple fix. Just need the weather to cool off a bit so I can get back out there in the garage. Also 80$ for that PEX expander is definitely a steal if you need one!

I have the same M12 3/8" IMPACT WITH A XC6.0 battery for 3 weeks now. Worked fine the first week I had it. Went on vacation for 12 days and today I used it for the first time. It did something very similar except my lights don't flash at all. The tool acts as if it is completely dead. If I remove and reinstall the battery then it comes alive untill I set the tool down. If I try to use it seconds after it may do the same thing. No lights, no operation and all I do is slide the battery out then back in and it works. I have tried squeezing and flexing the body , trigger, direction switch while actuating the trigger to see if that would aggravate it but nothing happens until I remove and reinstall the battery. I noticed the contact you are talking about and thought of "tweaking" it a bit to give it more tension against the corresponding battery contact but did not want to tamper since I just bought it and have a warranty. After seeing your video I think I'm going to give it a try. Thanks

I broke the battery connector inside the handle of my 2401-20 (dropped my drill ). Milwaukee will not sell me just the connector. I need to order the entire switch assembly for $40.00. almost the cost of the bare tool :( the fix would be an easy .99 cent solder job with a
      new connector.

    • @firworks
      @firworks  7 років тому

Yeah that does suck. I've been trying to find a way to source those connectors for some projects but the best I've come up with so far is buying either the M12 Incandescent flash light, or the M12 USB power supply. Both can be had for ~24$ on eBay. You can take them apart and grab the connector out of it.

We have been throwing batteries away where I work because of this. The terminals on the battery are bent in. My guess. Someone's tool has a bent terminal and is bending the batteries. Thanks! I brought some batteries home to mess with and found your video

I have a m18 combo set. Brushed. One battery works fine and the other when I use the impact or drill they both work then stop and have one blinking bar on the battery? Any thought?

Thank for information. Clean the terminal. Still didn't work 😕. Bend the terminal in a little work like a charm.

that junk is dielectrical grease which prevents corrosion and provides better contact for connectors

The 3 terminals in front are for balancing the charge and temp. Check from negative to each one and u will get 4v, 8v. And 0v. 0v is temp

Good video just had this problem I just actually remove the battery and slid it in and out a few times and I guess that clean the contacts but my tool was like 2 you're as old and like new so I was surprised there was that problem
