With New Vegas you can use NVTF instead of NVSR, it also removes stutters and you can play at unlocked fps without any bugs too.

What is NVTF?

NVTF essentially replaces Stutter Remover and Anti Crash, also fixes the game physics so you can run with an uncapped framerate without the game going crazy.
You can play at unlock fps yes but drops all the time and dosent utilise gpu so u end up capping at 60fps again anyway so I don’t understand the mod
The weapon debris setting in Fallout 4 is Nvidia PhysX. That's probably the cause of the crashes because GPU PhysX can be unstable these days.
in fallout 4 disabling vsync through the config removes the half resolution fps cap, but then you also need to use the high fps physics fix mod or else player animations and item physics will have issues
you can later cap it to something stable using rivatuner
Applied 144fps cap for fallout 4 through nvdia control panel , that said i don't have no mods installed , that may or may not interfere with the fps cap that you are experiencing

I might borrow a VR headset for that, any mods you recommend for it?
I assume the reason the FPS fluctuates when not moving is due to not visual updates occurring so the game doesn't present new frame data to the screen.

My 3060 plays 4k 60fps max settings FO4 no problems. And that's with graphically intensive grass mod.
Fallout 76 shadow distance setting hammers your cpu. Shadow distance on lowest setting in fallout 76 is higher than fallout 4:s ultra setting.

Never used mods on my pc but was playing fallout 3 this morning dropping to the 40s then back to 100.. same with new Vegas .. fallout 4 and 76 run better.. obviously need mods to fix the performance on newer hardware..

Mejor saquen a Todd y su banda de desarrolladores complacientes de ahi, si cambian de motor grafico a otra cosa como UE5 pasaremos de juegos que apenas andan y con historias pesimas a juegos que apenas andan y con historias pesimas pero con requerimientos absurdos y tirones por compilacion de shaders, y nos quedamos sin capacidad de modding.

Fallout 4 hasn't held up particularly well, either. Needs a lot of mods to make it bearable.
