    I have a 20 yr old draft cross" Mr. Toad", whom is very picky. I've had him for 5 months and is a hard keeper. It's been difficult to find the right combination of food to stop his weight loss. He doesn't like grass hay at all now, loved it when I first got him. This week we are replacing the grass hay with alfalfa.So his new combo will be, in the morning he will get 2 flakes of alfalfa and senior pellets with rice bran pellets, a joint supplement and heavily soaked beet pulp. Then in the evening 2 flakes of oat hay, which for now he likes. I live in Northern California and winter this year hasn't been that cold but enough to blanket him, done it twice. However the rice bran was added about a month ago and seems to be helping him not loose weight. Though it is a lot of extra work for me, I don't mind.

      Mr. Toad likes the grass hay now and doesn’t care for the oat hay but he has gained weight. He is such a picky boy but I love him. ❤️

    Soaked hay pellets work WONDERS!!! Alfalfa Timothy pellets from standlee and a small amount of Coolstance plus some minerals etc... and grass pasture most of the day, is what my boys are on and it keeps them SUPER healthy condition. They are shiny, strong and healthy. YOUR boy looks incredible! He is very lucky to have you! I love seeing what other people feed their horses. Always so interesting! Loving your channel! 😁🐴💕👍🏻
    ***Chia seeds are another GREAT way to sandclear horses. It becomes gelatinous and takes the sand with it on its “way out”. Plus it is very nutritious and full of healthy protein and fat.

    Shire mare 13yo here. Gets hay and supplement feed. She gets pasture grass (contains lots of wheat) on weekends, and goes NUTS for it. Think edgetrimmer speed :p Was too thin on hay alone, feed makes her stable and gorgeous. Im trying pasture to see if she can keep the weight with it instead of the feed. Im not stopping feed but monitoring weight. (she's 2015 lbs btw)

    Thank you for the info, it’s great to hear what other draft owners are feeding. I have two horses, that are an odd couple. My mare is a small Percheron cross of 14.2 and my gelding is a APHA paint of 16.3, however both have different needs in nutrition being over the age of 30, so it has been quite a learning process. Many in my area don’t grain their drafts as much, but my girl is over 30 and seems to hold her weight and top line better with a bit of grain. I use the Nutrena Safe Choice Performance and add rice bran plus an alfalfa orchard grass pellet mix that supplements her hay volume.

    • @HappieronaHorse
      @HappieronaHorse  3 роки тому

      So much to learn, isn't there? I'm glad you enjoyed the video. That's interesting folks don't grain much in your area...quite the opposite here lol. I'm glad you've found something that works! Thanks for your comment!

    Thank you for the amount of detail you included! Remy and I appreciate it. :) He's thankfully not as picky an eater as Fame, and will eat the rice bran crumbles as well as pellets, and will eat oil, which does help a lot! I'll have to look for a similar feed here. BTW - we moved from SoCal to NC last year and I love watching your videos. I love it here but I do miss that landscape. :) Glad to have found your channel!

      Thanks Julie! Glad you found it helpful. And glad Remy is not such a picky guy lol! That's great he will eat so many different things. NC is beautiful, I visited a friend in Charlotte once. As the weather improves I'm planning to do more on-trail videos so you'll get to see more of those ol' Cali hills. 😉 Glad to have you along for the journey!

    Can anyone please recommend any other channels like Stephanie's? I really love this channel but it hasn't got very many videos just yet, so soon I will have seen them all. I love this type of horsey content. And I'm not asking for recommendations with any of these specifics I'm about to go on about. Just any good horsey channel recommendations please!
    But I especially love watching stuff like this of down to earth horsey people, especially strong women out there living the dream, trucking and riding and caring for their own horse and sharing it all with us. I love watching ALL of it, every aspect of horse ownership.
    My dream is to do what Stephanie does basically. Be a horse owner again one day. But would have to use stable facilities like her and truck to riding destinations and would have to do alot of the work all on my own. Being the only horse person in my family.
    So seeing just every day people not necessarily people with multi million dollar stables and horses and high level competing and all that, (which is alot of what I get when just searching horsey content on here) honestly standards unattainable for the average horse loving girl who sees what Stephanie is doing as her more realistic dream for the future, so love seeing every day people who own like one horse and are actually out there living and doing my dream, showing how it is doable, strong women showing all aspects to non billionaire horse ownership and good kind riding in the modern world of right now, my true dream of horse ownership.
    Please any recommendations of inspirational chanels like this for me to watch while I work towards this dream life goal.

    Wow your horse is really beautiful. What for a rare Colour Kombination you had. Black/White with 2 Blue Eyes. It give some horses like Tinker, Paint Horse where this combination sometimes exists. What for horse breed is your horse, is it a Shire Horse cause of his size.

    The fastest way to Collic a horse is to change his feed, especially hay. Alfalfa should be started very slowly and then continuous with small amounts. We believe in Purina Impact Textured feed with Alicia Bermuda quality hay. Our horses eat rye grass pasture in winter & bahai grass pasture in summer and free choice cattle minerals year round, since they live & graze with our cattle.

    I wonder if my two draft horses who don’t need any extras to keep weight on (with my mare I have definitely the other problem she looks pregnant most of the time) should get tested. I don’t think I heard of it in U.K. as they are thought of as easy to keep, healthy low maintenance breeds. I don’t need any extra feed for my warmblood either (but I do feed them all as baby one needs it for development and I feel bad about the others to be left out, but it’s mostly nothing caloric just to put supplements into it)
    I’ll order the book for sure, thank you for the recommendation

    • @HappieronaHorse
      @HappieronaHorse  3 роки тому

      That’s great they’re easy keepers! I know PSSM1 isn’t unique to the US but I have no idea on cost/availability of testing elsewhere. Would love to know if you find out. Hope you enjoy the book! 🤠

    I’m a 270lb man, would I be able to ride a shire? I know they can get pretty darn big.. also is 5 acres enough for a horse of this size? As you can tell I’m very green about horses, I had two walkers when I was way younger.. winter and twister..

    • @HappieronaHorse
      @HappieronaHorse  2 роки тому

      Hey Kyle! A Shire could work. You may not even have to go super tall, a lot of times it’s the horses conformation, back length, fitness etc that has a greater impact on what they can carry. There are some stout draft crosses out there too! My friend keeps her 2 Clydesdales on that amount of land. Do you have an experienced horse person in your life that can help? A riding instructor or trainer could be of great benefit in assessing horses and getting your property set up. You may even find some helpful folks at a local horseman’s association too.

      @@HappieronaHorse yeah my grandfather would be the guy I would call on something like that, he took care of winter and twister, we lived on a big farm in rural Alabama back then, now I live in the thumb of Michigan and there are some pretty brutal winters, so leading to my next question.. how big of an enclosure for the cold season? The barn on the property is small, only about 20x30 with a loft.. would that be sufficient?

    • @HappieronaHorse
      @HappieronaHorse  2 роки тому

      Honestly dealing with that kind of cold is beyond my California girl experience 😆 If it were me, I’d reach out to some local equine vets and see what they recommend for keeping them in top shape. I’d imagine you guys in Michigan have concerns with automatic waterers freezing, ice forming on their backs, maybe even needing multiple blankets? How much extra hay/feed for weight mgmt, etc.?

I would start out with a really small amount and slowly increase it as he acquires a taste for it 😉 Food for thought...
