It’s awesome to watch your videos. I’m a retired diesel tech from Detroit and seeing how your shop is run brings back many memories of how I use to do the same.
The laying out of take off parts seems to be a lost art… your brief inspection helps in the long run.
I use to use 6x6 tembers and a Cherry picker for them small blocks… quick and easy and yes save your back lol . Flesh vs iron… iron wins👍👋

I'm always astounded at how much damage a diesel can sustain and keep on running effectively.
Great little engine those Perkins 152.Millions still in service world wide driving pumps,generators tractors.

Your dad is going to retire from a 9-to-5 hands on job to a 24/7 hands on job! Wow. Kudos!!! And as others have said, no apologies! You're smart to care for your body. Most of us haven't and are paying the price. Keep it up and being smart. I never wore ear, eye, or respirator protection as a young guy. Stupid is the word that comes to mind. Your back is going to thank you in 40 years.

Bro im sitting here at 35 y.o w a messed up back that'll probably never b the same. Protect your back at all costs for longevity. Don't be a hero, dont be lazy if you have machine for it use the machine. The funny thing is i thought i was being careful with my back but here we are. Btw i found your channel through shorts but love these longer vids. Iv never taken apart a 3 cylinder diesel but watching this vid i feel i vicariously did.
Man i hurt mine by really like not doing anything!! I kinda bent over looking at a engine, grabed the rad support and pulled alil bit!! It broke me down, i had to crawl up my steps into the house!!!! Man it was aweful!!!
Hi Nicolaus and Jimmie. Watching w/ great interest, almost like episode 1 w/ a cliffhanger. Probably not a common thing for someone to see their engine being rebuilt.
I bought this about 10 yrs ago, after borrowing another 30b and liking it. The hydrostatic drive makes it easier for me (no clutch), as my left leg is partially paralyzed. It has run great, other than the "tap tap tap" always present at idle.
Jimmie told me it looked like dust or dirt had been a factor. I think it preceded me. I changed the air filter when I bought it, and probably put less than 200 hrs on it (hour meter broken). When I pulled the engine, I checked the air filter thinking I'd replace it, but it was clean. The hose to the intake manifold and the manifold gasket both were fine. Then my son borrowed it to do some grading on his 2 1/2 acres out in the country and it started pushing oil out everywhere, including around the front seal and the dipstick tube.
I went looking for a shop familiar w/ this engine, and was referred to Jimmie by someone who had a history w/ him and greatly appreciated his work. Came to find out we'd graduated the same year from the same high school (no, I'm not saying what year).
They were so backed up, I waited 5 months to get my eninge in. But after talking to Jimmie, I wasn't going to let anyone else do the work. I'm just hoping I can talk Nicolaus into helping me put it back together. It's the first engine I pulled, and I'll be glad when it's back together and running.

What's the phrase dad has for the engine hanging from a chain working on it?????? I love old timers sayings. I wish me and my dad had an engine shop like yours. Your dad makes me miss my grandfather. I spent alot of time growing up on the farm with him rebuilding tractors and machinery cause we could never afford new machines. Miss ya gramps. RIP Alvin Helmer.

It's great that you are doing great. I am working in Kuwait since 1993. 9 years as foreman in a marine workshop and since 2002 as technical in charge BINNISF. I am about to retire. In my days, I was doing such a heavy equipment work without caring my health and safety and now I am weak to do so. When I see you work I remember my old days.

As a 36 year old man that just got out of working on cars after 15+ years. Use that hoist on everything. My back is blown out from being the “big strong man” f that don’t make my mistakes.

Being honest that engine looks pretty clean inside which means the oil and filter have been changed regularly,the piston is really bad but the big end and main bearings look really good. All the oil leaks were because of that piston pressurising the crankcase and blowing the seals and gaskets but overall the engine was pretty good. I had the same trouble with a 6-354 engine that the rings on one piston had broken up just like this one,new liner and piston in the damaged one and the other pistons fitted with new rings and rebuilt with new crank bearings and the head overhauled and it ran as good as new.
Use that lift as much as you can!

I did alot of overhauling for Mack Trucks ,Peterbilt, and many other dealerships over the yrs. It really cool to see the Machine Shop side. I did the valve work,head work , in shop and grinding the seats. Doing inframes and out of frame overhauls . Love your channel again and you are very lucky to work with your Dad and to be able to take over such a well organized and clean setup that your Dad started . Make him Proud ....

I have an MF135 with a Perkins A 3.252 and it is brilliant. Fantastic engines.
Can't wait to see the whole process! I just did a kubota engine that I messed up ring end gap on a cylinder in getting to redo that cylinder..
Worst part about a Perkins; they’ll run until every last piece in them is absolutely SHOT!

Its good engine that, its Been used in many traktors..
As you mentioned, it’s always nice to find something before it fails catastrophically or just fails in general. I’m working on a Caterpillar compactor and found a u-joint that is trashed to the point that the yoke at the output of the transfer gear case has been making contact with the driveshaft where the u-joint bolts on. Don’t know what has kept it from snapping, but when they do the driveshaft can flop around causing all sorts of mayhem.
Protect that bac! It the only one you have! 22 years doing auto body work, and I got lucky. Stay safe.
This engine will look neat once its new and repainted.

Lots of bolts is an MO of English machinery. US uses one and they will use 3 (true story, took a Perkins apart once). Bottom end was the same.

I like the way you work. I had a diesel shop in Cap Haitien Haiti at one time. I saw a lot of these little three cylinder Perkins, Lister Peter, John Deere diesels in stationary generator sets. Rebuilt a bunch of the little buggers.

I'm actually working on one of these right now! I'll be honest though, mine's still on the tractor and I didn't know about the 2 bolts hidden on the oil pan, thankfully I didn't mess anything up! Love the channel, keep up the awesome work!

Watching this before heading in to work today to investigate what appears to be a blown head gasket on a Doosan forklift. We bought it decommissioned from the NY Sanitation Dept, it has a Yanmar 4TNE98 diesel, common in a lot of small moving equipment. As an apprentice diesel mechanic it's the first time I'm doing something this big, different enough from standard gasoline engines to be interesting! Looking forward to the rest if this series, of ours is bad enough I might be doing a rebuild alongside you guys haha

A 3/8 break-over bar is probably the most under utilized tool in a shop. I have an early 1950's Craftsman that is only slightly older than me. My grandfather gave it to me, but; it still works after all these years.

One thing also ,Saw your pry bar ...if you can find a Cornwell PB25 Pry bar you will love it .. it is very beefy and at the end it has a 45 degree bend ...it gives you super leverage and will not bend ...an ol Mechanic I work will let me use his and show me the difference....I never use anything else for prying ....check it out ...you'll wonder why I never had one before....Take care

Can you do an in-frame rebuild on a 3 cyl perkins by removing the head and oil pan to pull the pistons.
Check to see if the tractor has a remote mounted air restriction indicator, I had to rebuild a 255 Massey because the hose fell off and the engine started eating dirt. I could trace the dirt in the intake to it.
Just because you can pick a head up doesn't mean you have to. It is especially convenient to use a hoist when re-installing a head and lining everything up while the engine is still in a vehicle.

Hey, we operate a forklift with the same engine at my job. Tough and reliable machine! Nevertheless, the previous employee managed to kill all three pistons with ether... It didn't want to start any other way, you see...
If you have a tool use it! IE the hoist 👍
Take care of that back. I sell a lot of vehicle batteries and do everything I can to keep the lift below my chest. You may want to consider getting a weight lifting belt. It will help with posture.

Yup , most little old industrial MF were torque converter drive . Dirt ingestion for certain and and some older perkins didnt start too well , AND probable ETHER use after wear and even lower compression ... just pieced a JD350 dozer engine for customer with same problem and kept going until 2 of 3 pistons wrecked similarly
Either was the cause of the ring groove torching out killing compression pressure. Dirt is a contributor but bearing wear and piston wear are minimal.
hey man, just some help. my tractor ( mf 135 AD3.152) is loosing oil on the back, i saw you separating the block from the sump. is ist possible to separate only the sump? Because my engine is loosing oil in that rubber hagging when you lift it, it seems it can be done withouth untear all the front gears right?

I agree with you, my bad back keeps me up every 3/4 hours with pain but I’m still turning wrenches at 72
Protect you back at all costs, mine is shot and I pay for it each day, its not does it hurt its how much. The Brits love to use 3 fasteners when one works fine so its a UK thing for all the head bolts.
I'm waiting for mine to BLOW up... other than leaking from Everywhere it is Still reliable for my limited use but I guess it's time for me to pull and rebuild.
Hey man. Do you have any personal experience with engine damage resulting from aluminum oxide contamination from scotchbrite pads? I used some scotchbrite to clean the RTV from the clutch cover on my motorcycle and now everything I read says my engine will grenade from the aluminum dioxide particles in the scotchbrite. I was very meticulous with following behind the scotchbrite with a rag so it would catch any loose pieces of RTV and scotchbrite and I changed the oil and filter before running the engine. What do you think my chances are of having bearing damage from the scotchbrite?

My dad spent 52 yrs twisting wrenches. Never used an engine stand. 4x4's on the floor and the engine on those. I'm curious about the "expression" for working on an engine swinging on a chain. We always had one about 3 monkeys and a football when a couple of the guys would gather around a project.

im a factory trained Perkins tech, i have seen way worse pistons then that. it amazes me what people do to there equipment and how long they run it after it starts making noise.
dusting is a major problem especially when the operator takes out the air filter thinking its going to make more hp.
Ah yes the wonders of starting fluid used too many times = broken rings!
